Newly-installed union Defence Minister -- and former Goa chief minister -- Manohar Parrikar Thursday almost incurred southern cinema czar Rajinikanth's wrath when he missed out on mentioning the legendary actor's name while formally acknowledging the presence of dignitaries present at the 45th IFFI inauguration ceremony here.

After reading out the names of Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley, Minister of State for I&B Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, state Governor Mridula Sinha, Parrikar appeared to have missed out on Rajinikanth's name.

But the former Goa chief minister, known for his ready wit, immediately made up for the lapse with a smile.

Addressing Rajnikanth with a sheepish smile, Parrikar said: "Sorry for that goof. I had written (the names down). Forgot the paper down there."

Many French people interested in Indian movies: French producer

$

Indian films like "Chennai Express" and "Gangs of Wasseypur" have wowed the moviegoers in France in the past and independent French producer Deborah Benattar says people of her country want to see more movies made in India.

There was a time when Indian films were alien to French people. Now, most of them are not only familiar with Indian films, but also appreciate them, she said.

"There are many Indians residing in France and most of them are from Tamil Nadu. So, first Tamil films released then Bollywood entered the market. This was followed by independent Indian films," Benattar, who has been staying in Mumbai for the past four years, told IANS after the session on 'Remakes - creative and financial viability' at the ongoing Film Bazaar here.

"But there are non-Indian communities too who love watching Indian films. They are interested in Bollywood. For instance, when Aamir Khan's 'Lagaan' released in France, it was a great success. People love Indian films for their vibrancy," she added.

Asked what's her choice when it comes to Indian cinema, she said: "I love Marathi films. They have great writers and storytellers."

For the past two years, France is turning out to be a good market for Indian films and she gives some credit to film festivals.

"There are many distributors who are always on the lookout. They pick Indian movies from various international film festivals," she said.

Benattar, who is the founder of La Fabrique Films, facilitates the sale of foreign remake rights to Indian producers and undertakes line production for international films. And she is happy that Indian filmmakers are remaking French films.

"It is interesting to see French movies remade in India. For instance, 'Nautanki Saala!' is a remake of the French film 'Apres Vous'. But the remake is fresh. It is not copied scene by scene though the concept is the same," she said.

The Film Bazaar, held alongside the annual International Film Festival of India (IFFI), has in the eighth edition packed an array of events for writers, producers, directors and more talents from across the world.

It is organised by the National Film Development Corporation, which aims at fostering excellence in cinema and promoting the diversity of its culture by supporting and encouraging films made in various Indian languages.

Hard to adapt books into movies: Rohan Sippy

$

Rohan Sippy is set to direct an adaptation of "Turbulence", a book penned by Samit Basu and the filmmaker, who also made "Nautanki Saala!" - a remake of French film "Apres Vous", says adapting books into films is harder than making remakes of movies.

Be it Hollywood or the southern film industry, Bollywood has often taken inspiration from movies like "Knight and Day", "We Are Family", "Kick" and "Ghajini". But books, barring a few like "Hamlet", "Othello" and "2 States: The Story of My Marriage", don't seem to inspire Indian filmmakers much.

After the session on 'Remakes - creative and financial viability' at the ongoing Film Bazaar here, IANS asked Sippy the reason and he said: "Books are relatively harder to be made into films. The form, creative calls to be taken from book to screen... it's a bigger challenge. It is also easier to connect with the audience if you make film remakes rather than book adaptations because it is not necessary that everyone has read the book."

Despite all the challenges, he is working on an adaptation of a book and he calls it "an ambitious project".

"I love the book. The rights have been bought. Basu will also write the screenplay. It is a superhero movie. We are not trying to be like a western film. We have made changes in the film. It is yet to be titled and the cast has to be finalised too," he said.

He also shared that along with the superhero, there will be four to five strong characters in the film.

Without revealing much about his choice of actors for the lead role, he praised the "young generation of actors".

"Varun (Dhawan), Sidharth (Malhotra) and Arjun Kapoor have made a great impact. Even Alia Bhatt," shared the filmmaker, who has worked with Abhishek Bachchan in movies like "Dum Maaro Dum", "Bluffmaster!" and "Kuch Naa Kaho".

Sippy, who last produced "Sonali Cable", is also working with "Aisha" actor Anand Tiwari.

"I am producing a young romantic comedy with Anand Tiwari. He has written the script and will also be directing it," he said.

The son of popular director Ramesh Sippy, Rohan is also open to the small screen.

"Television is an incredible medium. I hope there are more shows like '24'. If we get the budget to do in a certain way, I will produce or direct a TV show. I am more comfortable with fiction because I have been doing that," he said.

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri, who previously directed erotic thriller "Hate Story" says he has nothing to do with the film "Zid" and requested fans not to associate his name with it.

"I have been receiving messages from few people wishing me luck for 'Zid' but I only want to say I have got nothing to do with the film. Please don't associate my name with it," he told IANS.

The film has been produced by Anubhav Sinha and features actresses Priyanka and Parineeti Chopra's cousin Mannara along with Karanvir Sharma.

Agnihotri says that he had directed 60 per cent of the film but he walked out of project later due to certain differences.

"I left the film long back. Actually Anubhav Sinha gave me a Canadian DVD and said he has bought the rights of film 'Good Neighbors' so I got into it and started shooting then he told me let's make it into a erotic film. But what I was directing was a very sharp intelligent psychological thriller.

"I said how we can do this and he said no let's do it so I walked out then and there and started with my next project 'Junooniyat'," he said.

The director also says he doesn't want to get into any sought of fight and wish the team good luck.

"If I have to make an erotica, I will make an erotica but I don't want to harm the film. I asked them to do whatever you want to do with the film but please don't use my name. I don't want to fight. I want the film to do well," he said.

The film is slated for Nov 28 release.

Anurag Basu to visit South Korea for film

Filmmaker Anurag Basu fell in love with South Korea when he shot "Gangster" there in 2004. He will return to the country next year to write a script.

During a session on "How to shoot a film in Korea" at the Film Bazaar, which aims to bridge the gap between the international and South Asian film fraternity, Basu said he has a story for which South Korea serves as an ideal shoot location.

"I have a story. It has to be based on an Asian country. So why not Korea?" he said here Friday.

Asked by IANS about the project, he said: "I am going to Korea in January or February next year and I am going to finish the script there. Then only finally I will decide whether I will make a film or not. It is just a process. I will just go there, see places and finish the script there."

And he wants more Indian filmmakers to visit South Korea to shoot movies.

"Generally what happens is, when one filmmaker shoots in a particular country, others follow suit. But that didn't happen with South Korea. Maybe, I didn't shoot it properly. Over the last 10 years, I got many enquiries related to the country. Sajid Nadiadwala also called me, then I don't know what happened," said the "Barfi!" director, who wants to capture the changing colours of four seasons in South Korea.

"When I was shooting 'Gangster' there, I was going through chemotherapy. There was something in the air of Korea. I didn't get any side effects of chemotherapy," he added.

Basu also urged fellow filmmakers to shoot there as it was not very expensive.

"I was given Rs.2 crore to make 'Gangster'. The budget was tight, but we managed to finish shooting in 15 days there. I mostly took wide shots," he said.

Basu, who is currently working on "Jagga Jasoos", said Cape Town and Switzerland have been overexposed and that filmmakers should explore other countries.

"Whole of Africa has to be explored by Indians and rather than going to Thailand all the time, there are other Asian countries too like Vietnam and Laos. They are beautiful," he said.

'Munnabhai' makers jokingly pitched Gandhi as 'topless item number'

$

Admitting they suffered from anxiety about making a film about Mahatma Gandhi, the makers of 2006 blockbuster "Lage Rago Munnabhai" Friday said they had even jokingly pitched the character of Gandhi as a "topless item number" to potential distributors, who were worried about losing their money over the project.

"Lage Rago Munnabhai" director Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra said this at a discussion on the legacy of Richard Attenborough at the 45th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

Chopra explained how anxious film distributors came up to him, with a suggestion to include an 'item number' in the film that gave a contemporary twist to Gandhian philosophy.

"So when we were making the film, the distributors were very scared because they were wondering 'what are these guys doing with Gandhi?'.

"I remember them clearly coming up to me and say, 'hope you have included an item number, to ensure that our (investment) is safe'. I said yes... (there's) an absolutely good item. The item runs through the film," Chopra said, before Hirani completed the story for him.

"He (Chorpa) actually said 'topless item hai'," Hirani said, to peals of laughter in the audience.

Mahatma Gandhi was known to wear only a dhoti with the torso bare.

On the making of the blockbuster Sanjay Dutt-starrer, which brought the principles of Mahatma Gandhi back in the popular consciousness, albeit with a funny twist, Hirani said Gandhi-bashing had become a fashion.

"When we were growing up, Gandhi just meant a chapter in my history book, a face on the currency note, or a picture on a government office wall," the ace director said.

He said viewing Attenborough's film "Gandhi" changed the way he viewed the "Father of the Nation".

Translating Gandhi's teachings to a modern, young audience was one of the film's greatest achievements, he said.

According to Chopra, making "Lage Raho Munnabhai" was critical as well as a huge risk.

"We had this absolute fear that the film will come out and we'll be dead," he said.

Chopra said he feared public protest about the 'radical' manner in which the film portrayed Gandhi, and that would lead to a ban.

Some protests did happen, but the sheer success of the movie ensured that they subsequently petered out.

"The concept of Gandhigiri, the fact that you can talk about Gandhi with affection and love and not just reverence and respect. That Gandhi can be your friend and your teacher and not a saint you look at and pray. That was the most difficult thing we had to encounter, while writing it and filming it," Chopra said.

TV opera 'Satrangi Sasural' launched with fanfare

Mothers-in-law are often seen portraying a devil role in daily soaps. But how much interesting it would be if a girl enters a house where she has to face seven mothers-in-law instead of one. Changing that stale old characterization and with some unique concept and ideology, Zee TV launched its new offering "Satrangi Sasural", here.

Inspired from Zee's popular Marathi show "Honaar Soon Mee Hyaa Gharchi", the story is centered on the journey of Aarushi and Vihaan, and their bonding with the seven mothers.

"Satrangi Sasural" will produce a modern age melodrama. It will target the audience from each and every region with its unique and unavoidable sounding characters.

"The Marathi show was loved in Maharashtra for its unique concept. We thought to promote it on a national basis. But our show will not be similar to it. We have adapted and scripted it on our own way," Purnendu Shekhar, writer-producer of the show, said at the press conference at JW Marriott, Friday.

"The show is titled 'Satrangi...', because every character in it has its own colour and religion," he added.

Youngsters Ravish Desai and Mugdha Chaphekar will be seen portraying the lead couple Vihaan and Aarushi in the show. Although they will be sharing the screen with the multi star cast including veteran actress Farida Jalal and TV actresses like Samta Sagar, Bhavna Balsavar, Sadia Siddiqui, Resham Tipnis, Sonali Sachdev and Sheetal Thakkar.

Talking about the casting of seven mothers, Bhairavi Raichura, one of the producers of the show said: "The casting of characters was one of the difficult tasks for us because we had to search for seven mother-in-laws where everyone will be having different and unique personality from others".

The launch of the show witnessed a glimpse of age old "nok-jhok" between "saas and bahu", where Mugdha was seen asking suggestions from the journalists in order to win the hearts of her in-laws.

"I felt in love with my character Aarushi. It's too much similar to my personal life. It is pretty different from the roles that I have played in the past. I have never portrayed a role of 'Bahu' onscreen. And I have never thought that my role will be sidelined by other women in it," said Mugdha.

"The show is going to relate with the daily life of people. I know it's pretty awkward that we have seven mothers in the show. But their lifestyle does relate them to the viewers," she added.

Touted as a family show and not just for women, the soul and depth of the story will attract the men too, say the makers.

"The story of the show resonates well with the core of our channel. In it we are talking about the beauty of human relationships. It's not like those particular daily soaps which are just for women. We have targeted everybody from it".

With different genres of shows like "Maharakshak Aryan", "Jamai Raja" and "Bandhan", Zee TV is trying to widen its target audience with "Satrangi Sasural".

The show will go on air Dec 3.

Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, who considers Gulzar as his mentor, is now working with the noted lyricist, poet and writer's daughter Meghna Gulzar.

Fresh from the success of award-winning "Haider", Bhardwaj is now busy with a film directed by Meghna.

"I've written a film for Meghna Gulzar. It is being shot right now. I am also doing the music for it," he told reporters here after a session on "Shakespeare 2016 On Screen: Film London launch UK/India Feature Film Fund" at the ongoing Film Bazaar that bridges gap between the international and South Asian film fraternity.

Bhardwaj, who is greatly inspired by William Shakespeare's tragedies like "Macbeth" and "Othello", said that the poet's "work is timeless".

"That's why you can adapt in any language or country. They are basic human stories and deal with emotional conflicts. I love to contemporise and adapt to my culture. That's why I've been doing them," he said.

The session was also attended by Gulzar, who had made 1982 cult comedy "Angoor" based on one of Shakespeare's plays - "The Comedy of Errors".

"He (Gulzar) says that my films are original and not adaptation and that I am just exploiting Shakespeare's name. But I think he gives me compliment in a twisted way," said Bhardwaj, who can live his whole life working on Shakespeare's plays.

Without revealing any names, he said that he is planning to turn three of Shakespeare's comedy plays into films.

"I want to do 'King Lear'. I have a plot for it. I would also like to do three comedies. I will work on them passionately," he said.

Among actors, he says he will continue working with his "Haider" star Shahid Kapoor.

"I will keep working with him. He is a good friend and an actor," said Bhardwaj.
