Music composer Pritam, who will be seen judging and mentoring digital reality show "#fame Websinger", says technology can enhance the quality of the song, but not the voice of a singer.

"In today's age with technology there are many ways to enhance the quality of the song, even fine tune the singing but what the singer's voice brings to the song no technology can manage! Each singer comes with their own strengths and differences, which adds to the experience and the song," he said in a statement.

The music director. who has given tracks in films including "Life in a... Metro" and "Jab We Met", is excited to be the judge on the digital reality show.

"I really feel that new singers give songs a freshness on account of their voice, it is amazing how much the texture of their voice brings to a song," he said.

Talking about the concept of the show, he said, "The concept of the competition is to have singers from all across singing my songs, in their own version be it an unplugged version or anything else they are comfortable with and then judging them on how they have drawn on the emotions and the quality of the voice."

A special website will be created for the reality show next year, where the contestants will be judged on their ability to sing. Pritam will be judging the initial round of the competition.

The celebrations kicked off with the 'baraat' at 4.30 p.m. in the heritage hotel located in the old city area.

The 'baraat' included horses and two bands, one from Delhi and one from Hyderabad.

It will be followed by the 'jaimala' and 'phere'. There will be party at night, where Salman and his stepmother Helen will perform. Punjabi singers Mika and Yo Yo Honey Singh will also liven up the party.

The wedding rituals are being performed as per Punjabi Hindu traditions.

Salman's father Salim Khan, mother Salma, brothers Arbaaz, Sohail and other family members received the baraat.

Top stars from Bollywood and Tollywood, and businessmen were among the 250 guests invited for the wedding.

It was not clear which stars are attending the wedding as a thick security blanket was thrown around the hotel.

While police were managing the outer security ring, the actor's personal guards and others were keeping a tight vigil inside the hotel.

Salman booked the entire 60-room hotel for Tuesday and Wednesday. The celebrations will conclude Wednesday with a farewell lunch.

Seven folk artists from Rajasthan and many more from Mumbai were specially flown in for Tuesday night's party.

Hundreds of Salman fans, including young girls, gathered outside the hotel to catch a glimpse of the stars.

The fans, including some from Mumbai, mobbed the vehicles entering the hotel.

The menu for the party includes Deccani cuisine, especially Biryani and Haleem and double ka meetha.

Falaknuma is one of the most beautiful palaces of the Nizam, the ruler of erstwhile Hyderabad State.

The palace, which the Taj Group converted into a luxury hotel and opened four years ago, has 60 lavish rooms, decorated halls and a 101-seat dining hall, said to be the biggest in the world.

Its Durbar Hall, embellished with intricately carved wooden ceilings, parquet flooring, regal walnut wood furniture and handcrafted mirrors, had once hosted guests like King George V and Czar Nicholas II.

Located five km from Charminar, Falaknuma - or 'mirror of the sky' in Urdu - is a scorpion-shaped, all-marble palace which was once the residence of Mir Mahboob Ali Khan (1869-1911), the sixth Nizam.

It was Nawab Vaqar-ul-Umra, the Nizam's prime minister, who built the palace in 1893. Impressed by its magnificence, the Nizam bought it for himself.

A couple of suites including the one used by the Nizam are the most expensive. The hotel charges over Rs.5 lakh a night for the Nizam suite.

Billion stories to tell: Oscar-winning US director on India

$

0

New York-based Oscar-winning director Megan Mylan has often taken inspiration from India for her documentaries like "Smile Pinki" and "After My Garden Grows". But she is not tired of making films on the country as she believes there are numerous stories to present to the audience.

The director of "Lost Boys of Sudan" first visited India around six years back to make the Oscar-winning documentary "Smile Pinki", based on a five-year-old girl from Varanasi with a severe cleft lip.

"I ended up in India when I made 'Smile Pinki'. It was such a privileged way to get to know this country. When I reached Varanasi, people were calling it a small town, but for Americans if a town has a million people, it's not small," Mylan told IANS in a telephonic interview during her visit to the capital.

"I got to see the ancient place, the sacredness of it. I also met wonderful educated doctors. I got to see an interesting side of India while making the film and then when we came back, I toured cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai and I got to see another side of India. There are a billion people and billion stories to tell here," she added.

Back to the country on a multi-city tour to promote her latest project "After My Garden Grows", she wishes she had more time in hand to be inspired again.

"I wish I had more time to meet people. We went to a radio station and I thought this could be an interesting documentary. I am always on the lookout," said Mylan, who makes character-driven documentaries on social issues.

"After My Garden Grows", about girl child marriages in India that tells the story of Monika, a rural Indian teenager growing food to feed her family, and the seeds of her own independence, in a tiny rooftop garden, is currently screened in cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad and will be shown in theatres till Nov 20.

The movie also got support from Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, who recently hosted its special screening in Mumbai. Mylan, who has been making non-fiction films for almost two decades, thinks documentaries getting support from Bollywood stars is a good way to make it popular in the country.

"It's incredibly powerful. Documentaries start out with the challenge of audiences remembering them as dreadfully boring films they watched in high school. But if people who have a big audience can tell their fans to give it a try, it will help," she said.

Asked if she would like to make a fiction film with any Bollywood celebrity, she said: "I love what I do. I am not sure if I'll be good at fiction filmmaking. But life takes you to an unexpected path. I don't say no to anything, but it's not the path I am aiming for. I can make documentaries for the rest of my life."

But Mylan is impressed by the way Hindi movies are made.

"Bollywood films are incredible productions. We don't have anything like it in the US. It's impressive," she said.

Filmmakers cannot be made through 'shortcut' courses: Govind Nihalani

$
0
0

Unhappy with the way the current crop of film students are being shaped up through short-term courses, National Award-winning director and cinematographer Govind Nihalani has lashed out at "shortcut" courses for their failure to connect aspirants with Indian cinema's rich history and legacy.

The 74-year-old veteran of Indian cinema, known for mainstreaming parallel cinema and churning out critically-acclaimed films (that also gained mass popularity) based on socio-political issues, is in sync with modernity - his next outing, after a decade, is a 3D animation for children.

But he is critical of the manner in which filmmaking students are banking more on "quick results" and less on links with history.

"What has happened today is all the courses are becoming very short. People want quick results three months over and you think you are a filmmaker...Also there is no connection, no inheritance.

"There are no shortcuts. We should do something about people who are educating the next generation of filmmakers so that they tell the students it is important to know about the past, but people who are learning have no time for that. They just want everything fast," Nihalani told IANS in an interview here.

The six-time National Award-winner has churned out gritty and thought-provoking films like "Aakrosh", "Vijeta", "Ardh Satya", "Drishti", "Rukmavati Ki Haweli""Drohkaal" and "Dev".

Nihalani made his directorial debut in 1980 with the gripping "Aakrosh" and has worked as a cinematographer in filmmaker Shyam Benegal's ventures such as "Junoon", "Nishant" and "Ankur." He also shot the documentary helmed by Benegal on master storyteller Satyajit Ray.

"Time moves on...some things become old and some things don't," said Nihalani with a twinkle in his eyes, when quizzed on the relevance of masterpieces by legends like Ray.

This is where, he said, film festivals with retrospectives and literary works such as analysis etc. come in and help "connect present students with their past history so that they can see certain degree of continuation."

The Padma Shri awardee collaborated with noted Indian playwrights Vijay Tendulkar, Mahesh Elkunchwar and Bhisham Sahni in a career spanning over three decades.

In 1996, "Kuruthipunal", the Tamil remake of "Drohkaal" by Kamal Haasan, became India's official entry for the 68th Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film category.

A patron of regional cinema, Nihalani observed that the process of mainstreaming of regional films, though not so evident, is already on.

"You see Tamil films are as good as Hindi films. There are remakes of Tamil films into Hindi and they look like Tamil films. Immediately it (mainstreaming) may not be so much but the process is on," said the auteur.

Maintaining that theatre has its "own special place" despite the domination of Bollywood, the five-time Indian Filmfare Award winner considers the two media as "sisters".

"...it (theatre) shouldn't be seen as totally separate. There is quite a lot of overlap. There are some plays that are adapted to films and vice versa, they are sisters. Actors are going from theatre to films and vice versa and there are directors who are doing both," explained Nihalani.

Age has caught on and he is a bit hard of hearing, but that hasn't stopped the auteur from experimenting and rethinking cliches like Bollywood aping the West.

"Exchange of ideas is happening constantly as our films might inspire others. It is no more following somebody or aping somebody," said Nihalani.

Be it the Partition saga "Tamas", the issue of Naxalism in "Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa" (adapted from noted author Mahasweta Devi's Bengali novel) or the fight against terrorism in "Drohkaal", his projects have never shied away from the harsh realities and extremities of human nature.

This is reflected in his inclination to "keep pace with" evolving technology in filmmmaking.

"I don't think there is any other alternative. Like today there is no celluloid, so if I say celluloid was very good and I want to make film on celluloid, I can't make it... so I have to make my equation with technology and do the best with the tools I have.

"We have to accept the reality and keep pace with it," said the director whose last film was the heart-wrenching drama "Dev" (2004) centred on Hindu-Muslim riots.

Ravi Teja to play Akshay's role in Telugu version of 'Special 26'

Telugu superstar Ravi Teja is all set to play the role of actor Akshay Kumar in Telugu remake of "Special 26".

Confirming this Ravi, who is at the moment shooting for the sequel to the Telugu version of "Kick" says: "The Telugu-Tamil producer Thyagarajan who is actor Prashanth's father has bought the South Indian rights for two notable Hindi films Vikas Behl's 'Queen' and Neeraj Pandey's 'Special 26'. He wants me to play Akshay Kumar's role in the Telugu version of 'Special 26'."

Ravi feels a special bonding with Akshay Kumar.

"Akshay and I even look similar physically. This is not true with Salman Khan who did the remake of my 'Kick'. We are completely different actors. But Akshay and I are similar. When he did 'Rowdy Rathod' he was gracious enough to say he couldn't do the things that I did in the original. Hopefully I can do at least some of the things that Akshay did in 'Special 26'."

According to Ravi, the remake will be different from original.

"'Special 26' was a raw and real film. It is very different from what Akshay usually does.I can't afford to be different. My fans would never forgive me. Audiences like me doing action and comedy. I am a jovial person from childhood and so I remain. I like to laugh my way through my work. And that attitude reflects in my roles."

"Special 26" in Telugu would take time to take off.

"I've to complete 'Kick 2'. Then I start another film entitled 'Bengal Tiger'. Only after that will I be able to do 'Special 26'," he said.

Rajnikanth, Amitabh and a slice of Gandhi this IFFI

$

On Thursday, if you are in Goa, you may just be in chance to collect some stardust.

The 45th edition of the IFFI, which gets underway Thursday, is all set to host a coming together of two celestial objects, Rajnikanth and Amitabh Bachchan, who have helped millions of Indian cinema lovers soar into orbit over decades.

The duo, two supreme stars of a galaxy called Bollywood will attend the inauguration ceremony at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee indoor stadium on the outskirts of the state capital on November 20.

While Big B will be the chief guest at the event, the Nizam of the Southern cinema Rajnikanth will be present to accept the Centenary award for Indian Film personality of the year at a ceremony which will be attended attended Union ministers for Information and Broadcasting Arun Jaitley (cabinet) Rajyavardhan Rathore (state) and Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, among others.

Bachchan's entry this year is significant because the tenure of his absence from IFFI, India's biggest state-backed film festival has coincided with his falling out with the Congress-led central governments in the recent past.

'The President' directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf will be the opening film of the fest, while "The Grandmaster" by Wong Kar-wai, who will incidentally receive the lifetime achievement award, will be the closing film.

The 11-day festival will also screen 179 films from 75 countries across different categories which include World Cinema (61 films), Masterstrokes (11 films), Festival Kaleidoscope (20 films), Soul of Asia (7 films), Documentaries (6 films), and Animated Films (6 films).

The Indian Panorama section will include 41 feature and non-feature films. Seven films from the India's North-Eastern region will also be screened at the event, as part of a special package.

"In all sixty two films in the world cinema section will be screened, while 15 films will be screened in the IFFI's competition section this year," says Shankar Mohan, a senior official of the Union ministery for Information and Broadcasting, who is also Director of the IFFI.

Retrospective sections on Gulzar and Jahnu Baruah, special homage films on Richard Attenborough, Robin Williams, Zohra Sehgal, Suchitra Sen, and special tribute to Farooq Sheikh would be other attractions this year.

A special section of films that focus on dance, personality based retrospectives, and Masterclasses or specialized workshops conducted by master artistes will also form a part of IFFI 2014.

This positioning of China as a guest country at this year's event is a result of cinematic partnership as envisioned in an India-China agreement signed between the two countries when Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this year.

"This is only a beginning of sorts. We will see a greater interaction at all levels. Right from representatives of the Chinese film industry as well as other cultural exchanges between the two countries," Mohan said.

The organization of the latest edition of IFFI has also seen its share of controversy, with the main opposition party, the Congress, alleging a tendering scam in creation of temporary infrastructure for the event, a charge which the organisers have rubbished.

The festival will also pay tribute to British film maker Richard Attenborough, the maker of the iconic film Gandhi who died in August this year. His Academy Award winning film 'Gandhi' is also one of those films which will be screened to the general audience (non delegates) free of cost everyday.

Salman Khan's 'Kick' doing good business in Poland

Superstar Salman Khan starrer "Kick", that was released in many cities in Poland last week, is doing good business.

The film was released with Polish sub-titles and this helped Polish people, particularly the young, to enjoy the Bollywood masala fare thoroughly. The film is being shown in Warsaw, Krakow, Lublin, Poznan and in many important Polish cities.

"The response is very encouraging and the exhibitor is very happy," said J. J. Singh, president of the Indo-Polish Chambers of Commerce and Industry (IPCCI) who was actively involved in the shooting of "Kick".

The climax of this film was completed in the Polish capital in April this year when Salman could not get a British visa to shoot in London. The British authorities had refused a visa as Salman was facing charges in a Mumbai court.

This forced producer and director Sajid Nadiadwala to select Warsaw locations for dare-devil action scenes. A Polish company Film Polska had joined hands with Nadiadwala to finish the shooting speedily. It was only a two-week schedule.

Obviously Poles are very excited to see the action scenes.

"It is great to see our favourite Indian actor do amazing stunts scenes, whether he was jumping from Warsaw's highest building, the Palace of Culture or a bus was thrown from a bridge over the Vistula river," said Daria Dulok, a young Polish woman who is doing her doctorate on Bollywood culture.

It was the first time that an Indian film unit had selected Warsaw. Earlier in the winter of 2006, Aamir Khan, Kajol and Suniel Shetty had come to film the climax of "Fanna" on Tatra mountains.

According to J.J. Singh, Ajay Devgn has selected Krakow for his next film and he is going to spend ten to fifteen weeks to shoot in April to June next year. Devgn had come to Poland in September to finalise the formalities and has signed a contract with Film Polska of Krakow to provide his unit all the logistics.

"It is really very encouraging that Poland finally has become a destination for Bollywood actors and producers. This year in July and August, Riteish Deshmukh had brought his unit to shoot 'Bangistaan' in Krakow, which is the most beautiful area in Poland.

"We have well qualified technicians and other support staff which is very professional. One Polish cinematographer Artur Zurawski did a commendable job when he shot Rani Mukherji's 'Mardani'," said Janusz Krzyzowski, president of the Warsaw branch of the India-Polish Cultural Committee.

I want to settle down again, says Zeenat Aman

Yesteryear's glamorous actress Zeenat Aman, who turned 63 Nov 19, says she is ready to settle down again.

"Of course I want to settle down with someone once again. Why wouldn't I? You see, all these years I've single-mindedly focussed on my sons Azaan and Zahaan. Their well-being and happiness are all that mattered to me while they were growing up.

"Now that they have matured and have a life of their own. I can begin to think about my own life once again," says Zeenat with a laugh as she takes on her 60s headlong.

During her heyday Zeenat worked round the clock to become one of the most sought-after actresses in the 1970s. Her marriage to Mazhar Khan in 1985 considerably slackened her work-pace.

"You must understand I worked relentlessly for 15 years. When I got married I had reached a sort of saturation point. I wanted to focus on my marriage, husband and then the two boys. Now my sons are grown up and have a life of their own. They are both multi-talented.

"A older one has graduated. The younger one is qualified in the culinary arts, and in music and acting. Let's see which way they go. At the moment their future is fluid," she said.

Zeenat describes her own state of the heart as also fluid. She won't admit having someone in her life but readily admits to being ready for love and marriage in spite of being singularly unlucky all her life in matters of the heart.

"I hold no grudges against anyone. I believe there are good people out there. And I believe there is always room for love and companionship," says Zeenat.

She admits she isn;t that hopeful about her career.

"There are just that many roles for actresses my age. In fact the opportunities are almost non-existent. For better or worse I can't chase work. I never have done that. I choose from whatever comes my way."

Zeenat hasn't had much luck with the quality of roles in recent times. But she isn't complaining.

"I will do another film now only when it's something worth my while. I don't need to act just for the heck of it," she said.

"The singer has also acted in the video along with actress Suza Kumar. The song features well known musicians - Aalaap Raju (Bass), Keba Jeremiah (Guitar), Vikram (Percussion) and Natarajan (Nadhaswaram). The song was mixed and mastered by Shadab Rayeen," added the statement.

The song talks about problems in a relationship and how the trash gets accumulated in the hearts of the partners. The song, in a light hearted way, coaxes the listener and viewers to dump the trash out of the system.

While Nambiar has penned the lyrics for the Tamil version of the song with Naveen Madhav, the Telugu version has been written by Ananta Sriram.

Hindi version of the song is penned by Mann Taneja and Sahiljeet Singh, while the Malayalam version has been written by B.K Harinarayanan

The English lines and rap portions in the song are written and sung by Krissy and Lady Kash.

Actress Kitu Gidwani, who received critical acclaim for her roles in movies like “Dance of the Wind”, “Earth” and “Rukhmavati Ki Haveli”, has been roped in to play one of the significant characters in "Meet The Patels".

Kitu will essay the role of Rita Patel in the film.

"I was excited to play the part as the character had several uncanny quirks. I had to dance with tribals, run away from a wedding and do a lot of mad stuff which I thoroughly enjoyed," said the actress.

The film is based in Mumbai and is about two Gujarati boys Tom Patel and Jerry Patel, who know how to live life to the fullest and would do anything except hard work.

Directed by Saurabh Verma, the film also features Shazahn Padamsee, Shiv Pandit, Kettan Singh and Vaishali Desai.

"Having Kitu on board has just changed the dynamics of the film. She looks so cute and vibrant on screen that she can give any lead heroine of the present a run for their money," said the director.

The film will release next year.
