Have no social life, friends: Ronit Roy

0
0

Actor Ronit Roy, who will be seen as a male protagonist in TV show "Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyaar", says he balances personal and professional life by becoming a recluse.

"I don't have a social life, have no friends and don't like to go out. I am a recluse. So I go to work and after the shoot head straight to home. Hence I have not lost out on personal life as I balance it," Ronit told IANS over a telephonic interview from Mumbai.

Ekta Kapoor's show, that airs on Sony Entertainment Television, revolves around a divorced couple and their relationship when they meet after 15 years.

Though the actor was seen "Adaalat", Ronit is returning to the world of daily serials after four years.

"I had not worked with Ekta for a long time. Everyone used to ask me that why was I not working with her. And my reply used to be that 'when she will have a role for me she will call me'. And now she called me for this role and I said yes," he said.

The actor who brought some memorable roles like Rishabh Bajaj in "Kasautii Zindagii Ki" and Mihir Virani in "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi" alive on screen, insists the serial is not about having an illicit relationship with your former flame, but rediscovering the lost love.

"The serial is not about having a relationship with your ex but re-discovering the love that you had when you were married. It is about realising what you have lost out and is about an attempt to reclaim it," said the actor.

The actor has not taken up any other projects other than the daily show.

"I don't plan much. I don't have any other projects other than the show. When any film will come up I will put it across the production house and I am sure they will do something," he said.

The actor is often seen portraying role of a father -- be it an abusive father in "2 States" or a strict one in "Udaan". But the actor says it is coincidence these role got popular.

"I have done other films as well like "Student Of The Year", "Shootout at Wadala" and "Boss" where I did not portray father's role. It is just that in two of my well -known projects like "Udaan" and "2 States" I happen to be a father," Ronit said.

"I basically do work that excites me and if that role happens to be a father then I play it," he added.

Filmmakers can't change society: Vishal Bhardwaj

0
0

Director Vishal Bhardwaj says filmmakers express their experience on the big screen, but they can't transform society.

The "Haider" director believes that movies are mirror of society, but filmmakers are not social workers.

"We are storytellers. Whatever happens in life, filmmakers reflect that. We express what we experience. Films can be brought to a level of discussion, but we can't change society because it is made up of different individuals," he said here Saturday during a session on "Cinema as a tool for social change" at the ongoing Film Bazaar.

"Movies are supposed to start agreement or disagreement. That's the beauty of democracy we live in," he added.

But films should not lead to riots in a country.

"Why are we so intolerant? It's because society is not educated. Proper education should be given and they should understand that they should not create riots when a film releases," he said.

According to film writer Jaideep Sahni, who was also one of the panelists, change in society is a "thing of decades and centuries".

But the writer of movies like "Chak De! India" and "Khosla Ka Ghosla" believes it is important to share your story with the masses.

"Sometimes my parents may not agree with me, but we are all part of the same family so we find a way. I will say what I want to because it needs to come out. The same goes for society. If something is bothering you, the way you talk to your family, the same way you talk to the society through movies," he said.

He also highlighted that it is easy to make "B or C grade movies", but if an Indian filmmaker wants to show something related to politics, the movie faces problems.

"You can stuff in nudity or action in a film, but if you want to make a film on something like caste issue, someone will clamp down on you," said Sahni.

Film Bazaar, held alongside the annual International Film Festival of India, has packed an array of events for writers, producers, directors and more talents from across the world.

Love for adventure drew Ashish Chowdhry to 'Khatron Ke Khiladi'

Actor Ashish Chowdhry, who is ready to show his daring side in the sixth season of "Khatron Ke Khiladi", says while money is an attraction for participating in the reality show, it is his love for adventure that also pulled him into it.

The winner of the show takes back a huge amount.

Asked if the monetary prize played an important role in making him give the nod for joining the show, the actor, who once reportedly went bankrupt, said: "Isn't it the criterion for everyone?"

"I am honestly going to miss my kids when I am in Cape Town, but I have to make a lot of money for them. See if I was very loaded (with money), I wouldn't have left them, but now I am making money for their education and future."

"I will be honest...I genuinely wanted to do this show also because I love adventure. I have been offered all the reality shows -- from 'Bigg Boss' to 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' -- they have all been kind enough to ask me, and I have always said 'no' because I felt that I am an actor, but not a great dancer," he added.

Ashish was recently blessed with twin girls, and his first child with wife Samita is a son named Agastya. He also takes care of the two children of his late sister Monica, who died in the 26/11 attacks.

The sixth season of "Khatron Ke Khiladi" will go on air in January 2015, but a date is yet to be fixed.

What's his greatest fear?

"I don't want to make a fool of myself...no one likes losing. I am not a great sportsman and I am not scared of snakes or reptiles. I am only scared of losing early," said the "Dhamaal" actor.

Late filmmaker Shakti Samanta's son Ashim is set to make a children's film titled "God! Hai Toh Samne Aa".

It will be a small-budget movie.

Talking about the storyline of the movie, Ashim told IANS: "It's about a 12-year-old child, who fights with god, is very intelligent and wants to study. Due to many problems, he is not able to carry out things as he wants as his father is a drunkard, mother is a maid and he can't see his future with no scope for good school."

"He prays to god for his wellbeing but with no results. In a span of time, he gets fed up and challenges the god saying 'God! Hai Toh Samne Aa' (God, come forward if you exist)."

Ashim says he is attempting to bring a sensible message with comedy as its backdrop.

"The film will have a message with comedy element in it. The child artist is yet not finalised and till I don't get the terrific child artist, I will continue searching for the actor. It's about a smart child who aspires to study in a good school," he said.

Ashim also wishes to approach veteran actor Anupam Kher once the script is finalised as he find him suitable for a key role in the film.

The film is to be jointly produced by Ashim, Arun Malhotra and Virendra Rathor, under the banner of Aradhana Films in association with Joinfilms -- a venture of AV Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

Actress Asha Negi, a contestant of "Khatron Ke Khiladi - Darr Ka Blockbuster Returns", says she wants to change the “cute little bubbly girl" image that people have about her, with some daredevilry in the forthcoming stunt-based reality show.

The 25-year-old, who has done serials like “Bade Achhe Lagte Hain”, “Pavitra Rishta” and “Ek Mutthi Aasmaan”, believes that her stint in the show will help her to experience her strengths and overcome her fear.

“Until now everybody has recognised me with cute little bubbly characters that I have played in various TV serials. But this time I want to change public opinion about me. 'Khatron ke Khiladi' will be a perfect platform for me to experience my strengths and overcome my fears," Asha told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Asha hopes she does not feel a sense of panic when she is asked to perform some challenging tasks on the show, which will be hosted by filmmaker Rohit Shetty. The show involves multiple celebrities who compete with each other by involving in dangerous stunts and tasks that can range from eating insects and jumping off scary heights.

In preparation for the show, Asha has even tried to learn how to swim so that she can overcome her fear of water.

Asked about her strategy for the show, Asha said: “I am going with a strategy that I would not panic doing any of the tasks. I’ll try being calm and improve my mental strength. I have also learned swimming because I didn’t know how to swim."

Any task which she had seen in the previous seasons and is afraid of?

“I am scared of all the tasks. But there will not be any task where I will be saying ‘oh my god! I can’t do this’. I have fear of water, height, cockroaches, rats, snakes and all such creepy things. I’ll try to do each and every task in hand with perfection.”

The TV star, whose partner Rithvik Dhanjani was seen in “Dare 2 Dance”, a show of a similar genre, says that he has given her a lot of tips and tricks for her stint in “Khatron Ke Khiladi”.

“He told me how to get underwater. The only thing that’s not good in me is the turmoil (in my head). Rithvik has asked me to go into the show, and kill it," she said.

Best roles go to actors from film families: Arjun Mathur

0
0

Actor Arjun Mathur, who has received rave reviews for his latest movie "Fireflies", rues how the "big roles in the big films" only go to those from within the film fraternity.

“I’ve been around for seven years. I’ve done a variety of roles that have been well received by critics. But I am still to get the big roles in the big films that spin the kind of money that make and break stars," Arjun said.

Ironically, Arjun was discovered by Farhan Akhtar.

“He was very kind. He gave me a role instantly in his short film. I was then cast in his sister Zoya’s film 'Luck By Chance'. They were not leads. And why should they be? Farhan’s home productions would rightfully star him only.”

Arjun feels the entire milieu in Mumbai is extremely camp-oriented.

“Every new actor in Mumbai is affiliated to one or the other camp. I can’t spend my time sitting on stars’ sets or hotshot producers’ offices. By now they know what I am capable of. I can only go this far to push myself. The rest is up to the industry."

"But it’s true that the best roles go to actors from within film families. It’s a reality that all us outsiders have to live with,” he said.

Arjun’s promising film career was braked in 2011 when his three-year-old marriage fell apart.

“The split devastated me. For three years I did nothing except try to salvage the relationship, and save the marriage. I fell off the Bollywood map, packed my bags and went home to Delhi. As far as I was concerned, my life and career were over," he said.

It was at this point that "Fireflies" happened to Arjun.

“The director, Sabal Singh Shekhawat insisted I play the role. I refused because I was in no frame of mind to face the camera. Also, the role of a guy who is in a desperate relationship that isn’t going anywhere, was too close to home for comfort.”

Sabal insisted. It was the best thing to have happened to Arjun’s shattered life.

“Playing the part of a man hurtling towards a dead-end relationship proved therapeutic. I feel I’ve been saved from self-destruction. If this film had not happened, I’d have remained in Delhi drinking, getting fat and feeling sorry for myself. This film ended the spell of stupor for me," he said.

Preetika Rao all for 'short, sweet' TV serials

0

"Beintehaa" would have clocked a year's run on the Indian small screen next month, but the curtains have been brought down on the show already. Actress Preetika Rao, who played the lead role, is glad it ended on an "interesting note" rather than being an "endless saga".

The last episode of the show was shot Friday.

“Personally, I believe that a tele-series should be short and sweet and keep the audience engaged till the very end and we have managed to achieve that with 'Beintehaa'. I personally don't like endless sagas, so I'm happy that we have ended on an interesting note," she said.

Rationialising the show's end, Preetika said: “'Beintehaa' had a definite storyline. It was a passionate story of Aaliya and Zain who are ignorant about the laws imposed on a Muslim couple who divorce but later wish to remarry the same partner."

"For this, they have to pass the test of the Halala Nikaah. It was an interesting concept new to Indian television.”

Preetika says the soap lost its popularity when her character remarried.

“Fans were upset because they couldn't bare to see Aaliya remarry in order to pass the test of Halala Nikah so that she can get back to Zain. Hence, the love story between Rehan and Aaliya had to be fast-tracked and the series ended up being shorter than the original plot.”

She said shooting the last episode was an "emotional" experience for the cast and crew.

When Arjun Mathur's sexuality became a talking point

0
0

Damaging as it may sound, Arjun Mathur started his career with two back-to-back gay parts that quickly became a talking point in the film industry about his sexuality.

“I did two short film on AIDS where I played gay characters. In Farhan Akhtar’s film ('Positive'), I was Boman and Shabana Azmi’s son. In Mira Nair’s short film ('Migration'), I was Irrfan Khan’s lover.

"I have to admit that playing two gay characters at the start of my career could have gone against me. I even played a gay hustler in Onir’s 'I Am'. This is very conservative industry. People believe what they see,” he said.

In a role reversal, Arjun goes all the way to the other end in his next film. Entitled "Couching Tiger Mannu", it features Arjun as a guy who goes couch surfing to get laid.

“It’s the role of a guy who travels to different countries and stays in with locals as a guest hoping to score with foreign girls," said the actor, who has also featured in films like "Luck By Chance" and "Fireflies".

TV shows easier to do than films: Kiku 'Palak' Sharda

0
0

Actor-comedian Kiku Sharda, who currently portrays various roles like Palak, Pankhudi and Lachha in the popular TV show "Comedy Nights with Kapil", says he prefers the small screen over the big screen as he gets instant feedback.

Kiku, who has also made his presence to the big screen by his supporting roles in films like "Phir Hera Pheri", "Dhamaal", "No Problem" and "Happy New Year", also finds TV shows easier to do than films as it helps him make instant image makeover.

"The best part about TV is that you can get instant response from the audience on your work. But in films, you have to wait for its release for any kind of suggestions from viewers."

"I don't know how the filmmakers handle this pressure. With TV shows, I'm able to change myself according to the needs and aspirations of my fans. I find TV shows easier to do than films," Kiku told IANS in an interview here.

The actor is known for entertaining fans with his comical characters. And he says he would love to be etched in his fans' memory with his fictional names in shows rather than his real name.

Once the 39-year-old was criticised for entering the dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa” in the garb of his fictional name Palak, and not by his real name. But criticism doesn't affect Kiku.

“Criticism hardly makes any difference to me. I want to be known by the characters that I portray. I don’t want people to remember me by my name. I'd rather feel honoured if people will remember me by my characters," he said.

"Comedy Nights With Kapil" has taken Kiku's popularity to new heights, but the show, hosted by master comedian Kapil Sharma, has faced a lot of criticism over some vulgar jokes around physicality.

Defending that, Kiku said that critics pick only 20 percent of the jokes and leave out the rest.

When asked about the use of physical comedy to raise the show's ratings, Kiku said: “I am also against all these things where you joke on somebody with reference to their physicality. But in ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’, I don’t think that we get center forward around it. We try to present comedy in a decent way and not making it look much vulgar and cheep."

“People pick only 20 percent of the show and leave the rest 80 percent. But if they watch the whole of it, then they will not say anything against it."

Talking about his highly famous character Palak in “Comedy Nights with Kapil”, Kiku added: “People call Palak a short-fatty girl, but on the other side I think she is intelligent and confident about what she is saying. She speaks from the heart."

“With due respect to women, I would like to say that people should not try to focus much on their outer beauty. We can only gain stardom when we are confident from inside."

Bollywood support will help Marathi cinema, says 'Balak-Palak' director

0
0

Filmmaker Ravi Jadhav, whose Marathi directorial "Balak-Palak" was co-produced by Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh, says support from the Hindi film industry will give a push to Marathi cinema.

Riteish co-produced the with Uttung Thakur.

"Bollywood's support for our movies will definitely help the Marathi film industry. We have a limited budget. We spend approximately Rs.1 crore or Rs.2 crore, including the film's promotion. In that kind of budget, it is difficult to reach out to everyone," he said.

"Bollywood stars help to make our movies reachable to a wider audience. For instance, when Riteish worked with me on 'Balak-Palak', he used social media to promote it. Bollywood actors acting in Marathi films will also help," Jadhav told IANS here.

He also says that the audience, which consists of a large number of youngsters, also feels Marathi cinema is "cool" if Bollywood lends support.

The "Time Pass" director also believes that producers who work on Hindi movies should buy rights from Marathi filmmakers and make remakes to promote them.

Jadhav was here Sunday as a panelist for a session on "Cinemas of India - Marathi Cinema" at the ongoing Film Bazaar.

At the session, the director, who takes inspiration from his surroundings for his films, said: "Marathi stories are the hero. The stories decide music, casting and the treatment required."

Filmmaker Paresh Mokashi, another panelist, had a different opinion to share.

"Stories are not important. What we create out of stories is more important. It is about how a filmmaker takes on a subject. Whether it engages the audience or not, is important," said the award-winning director of Marathi film "Harishchandrachi Factory".

He was also all praise for the new producers of Marathi films.

"There was a time when only 10 to 15 Marathi films used to release (in a year). Now, there are around 150 films made in Marathi every year. I will give credit to the new producers who want to do something in the field of cinema," said Mokashi.

Nikhil Sane, senior vice president, Zee Marathi and Zee Talkies, who was also a part of the session believes that filmmakers need to look beyond satellite rights and theatres to earn profit.

"We need to reach out to audience outside India too. We need to evolve the process. We tried with 'Time Pass' by releasing it in Singapore. We are working on it," he said.

Back in the 1970s, filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra had made a documentary titled "An Encounter with Faces", which won a nomination to the Oscars. He says he would like to do it again.

Since then he has been offering the audience entertainers like "Sazaye Maut", "Khamosh" and "1942: A Love Story". But he won't mind going back to making documentaries.

"I love the format of documentaries. I would love to make documentaries," said Chopra, who has also produced successful films like "Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.", "Parineeta" and "3 Idiots".

He is currently working on his Hollywood venture "Broken Horses", which was even appreciated by "Titanic" director James Cameron.

"I got a call from him and said that he wanted to meet the writer of the film. I told him that he had met the writer. Then I told him that I was the writer," said Chopra, who hadn't put his name on the script.

The "Ferrari Ki Sawaari" producer calls the upcoming film as a "great challenge and one of the most satisfying" projects.

Chopra, who is not a "believer of film festivals", was here for Film Bazaar's "Master Class with Vidhu Vinod Chopra: a dialogue between Filmmakers", where he was interviewed by director Sudhir Mishra.

"I am not a festival man. I can watch movies on DVDs. The idea is to watch movies. But I am impressed by Film Bazaar," he shared.

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra says he wants to make the blockbuster "3 Idiots" in various languages because it left an impact on many people's lives.

"I'd like to make '3 Idiots' in Chinese, French and English. I would love to make it in every language in the world. It changed many lives including my daughter. She left media studies and learnt Kathak. Now, she teaches dance," said Chopra, who also confessed that while growing up, he couldn't tell his father that he wanted to be a filmmaker and not a doctor.

The Rajkumar Hirani directorial, which criticised the education system in India without being too preachy, released in India in 2009.

The Chopra production featured Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, R. Madhavan and Kareena Kapoor.

Work closely with my directors: Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra said that when he produces a film, he contributes to it and works along with directors but doesn't go on the sets.

He believes that filmmaking is a team effort rather than just one individual's work. The producer of films like "Ferrari Ki Sawaari" and "Parineeta" says he has complete trust in his directors, but he likes to work with them.

"I work closely with directors. I can co-write or do editing. But I don't go on sets. When we were shooting 'Munna Bhai...', Sanjay Dutt would look at me instead of Raju (director Rajkumar Hirani) and ask me if the shot was okay. After that, I chose not to go on the sets," said Chopra, who likes to make movies that will make him proud and happy and also recover money, here Sunday.

During the ongoing Film Bazaar's "Master Class with Vidhu Vinod Chopra: a dialogue between Filmmakers", he also shared that he is surprised by the long association between him and Hirani, with whom he has made films like "3 Idiots", "Munna Bhai M.B.B.S" and the forthcoming Aamir Khan-starrer "PK".

"With Raju, it's crazy it lasted for so long. No agreement was signed between us," said Chopra, who calls himself "not a pleasant or likeable guy".

The filmmaker, who doesn't mind using cuss words, says he was so "insecure" that he used "offence as a defence mechanism".

"Now, I am not as bad as I used to be," he added.

He might describe himself as someone who can't make himself "likeable", but there must be many filmmakers who would like to thank him.

"I reach out to young filmmakers because nobody helped me when I wanted to release 'Khamosh'. No one bought it for a year. People from the industry sent me flowers and appreciated it, but no one was willing to buy the film," said Chopra, who has also worked with directors like Rajesh Mapuskar and Pradeep Sarkar.

We should've spent more time on 'Lekar Hum...': Dinesh Vijan

0
0

In retrospect, film producer Dinesh Vijan feels that investing more time on "Lekar Hum Deewana Dil" would have perhaps helped in favour of the film's box office performance.

The movie, which marked the Bollywood debut of Armaan Jain and Deeksha Seth, turned out to be a dud.

Asked what went wrong with the movie, Vijan said: "I think we should have spent more time on it...it was a learning experience. While the film was on post-production, I was abroad with the team of 'Happy Ending' and was simultaneously managing both the things. I don't want to blame anyone for this."

The film, which released earlier this year, was directed by Arif Ali.

Vijan was recently caught amidst reports of a rift with his business partner Saif Ali Khan. But he says they share a happy and a healthy relationship.

"I know Saif for more than 10 years and our bonding is very strong. (Only now) The films that we want to produce together, we will do it together and the films that I want to produce on my own, I'll produce it separately."
