On behalf of the Indian film fraternity, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan Tuesday appealed to all citizens to contribute to the cause of rehabilitating the flood-ravaged Kashmir.

Big B is the front-runner of the campaign "Hum Hain...Umeed-e-Kashmir", an initiative of the entertainment industry, led by the Event and Entertainment Management Association (EEMA), the Film and Television Producers Guild and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEE).

"When we see (the kind of things that have happened in) Kashmir, Assam, Meghalaya or the Andhra Pradesh cyclone... when we see these things, I feel that as an Indian, whatever I am able to do for my nation, I must do," the 72-year-old said here at a press conference.

Calling himself a "small member" of the Indian film fraternity, the globally popular icon said that whenever the country has witnessed a disaster, "the nation's film industry has, without hesitation, tried to help people, and share their sorrows".

"During 45 years of my career, I have seen many such times when some disaster has hit the country, and the film industry has stood united for the cause and contributed towards it. I dedicate myself for this cause. I will do as much as I can do for Kashmir," he said.

He added that he feels "immense sorrow" to see the post disaster photographs of the scenic land, which was once Bollywood's favourite destination to shoot.

Film producer Mukesh Bhatt, president of Film and Television Producers Guild, too was present at the occasion, which was also graced by Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal.

Bhatt said it's like "payback time" for the film industry.

"We feel emotionally committed to that land, and we must come together to help in its hour of darkness," Bhatt said of Jammu and Kashmir, which was left devastated after floods hit the region in September.

Hence, as part of the "Hum Hain...Umeed-e-Kashmir" campaign, a slew of celebrities from the film and music world will come together to perform for a charity concert, to be held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here Saturday. They will also appeal their fans and the public to donate generously for the cause.

From Gulzar, Vishal Bhardwaj, Sharmila Tagore and Vidhu Vinod Chopra to Aamir Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Ranbir Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Sushant Singh Rajput and Parineeti Chopra -- various known names are lending their support to the effort.

Sonowal said that on his part, he has waived off the stadium rental for the event, which he will attend only after buying the tickets.

All money generated through sale of tickets, donations and sponsorships, will be given to select charities for relief work.

"Our team is the youngest team in the league. I urge all supporters of NEUFC to come to the stadium and cheer our players," he said in a press statement on the eve of NEUFC's match against Atletico de Kolkata in Guwahati, which is approximately 100 km from Shillong.

“‘Aisee waisi dosti nahin’ is a reminder and a tribute to my own buddies who have been a part of my journey and who have been instrumental in creating fond memories of our brotherhood. India will compete with Asia's elite soon: John Abraham

$

0

India will be able to compete against Asia's football elite in the next five to six years, John Abraham, Bollywood actor and co-owner of ISL franchise NorthEast United FC, said Wednesday.

"Currently, India is ranked 158 in the FIFA world rankings, and it will be some time before we see this ranking make an upward move. The success of the Indian Super League (ISL) is important for the growth of football in the country," John told journalists in the state capital of Meghalaya here.

"We are hopeful that India will give a good fight in football to Asian countries in the next five to six years."

"We need more time. We need to begin somewhere and the success of ISL is important for the growth of football in the country. If this (ISL) does not work, then I don't know what will work," said the actor-producer.

John, however, acknowledged that ISL was still in its nascent stage with the sole emphasis at generating an interest in football and identifying the hidden talent in this region.

Moreover, he said the participation of Bollywood stars, cricketers and business people in managing the football clubs of the ISL and the presence of renowned international players from across the world in various ISL teams would take football in the country on an ascendant path.

All India Football Federation (AIFF) vice-president Larsing Ming Sawyan, who was present on the occasion, was candid in admitting that development of football in India was growing at a very slow pace.

"The ISL has just started and our aim is to look at a meaningful programme to develop football as the number one sport in India," Sawyan, who is also the co-owner of the NorthEast United FC, said.

John, who is here to drum up support for his football club, stressed the need to support the youngest side in the entire championship.

"Shillong is the birthplace and germination site of this magnificent team (NEUFC), and on behalf of NEUFC, I simply had to be here to show my gratitude for the support that we have received so far," the former model said while at the same time highlighting that NEUFC was a melting pot of talent with just the right element of vigour from youngsters and seasoned players.

He also highlighted the unique character of the side by mentioning that the NEUFC was the only region-based team unlike others which were city-specific.

"We have a fan base from eight states which is our major strength and, of course, the direct involvement of an I-League side, Shillong Lajong FC," the Bollywood star said.

Moreover, Sawyan, the owner of Shillong Lajong FC, said that Shillong Lajong FC was established at the grassroots level and could provide the much needed support to the new franchise.

On the future plans of the NEUFC, John said: "We have a long term vision and should be allowed to make mistakes in the initial stages. In the first year, I can only say that we hope to win. With time, I can say we will surely win."

On being questioned about the prospects of having home matches in Shillong, John highlighted that Guwahati was the homebase currently owing to the ease of connectivity -- logistically speaking.

"We are discussing the prospects of getting two-three matches to Shillong by Season 2 and one each in Imphal and Aizawl," Abraham said while at the same time stressing that investment in floodlit matches is high and this would take some time.

John silenced critics who regarded the whole ISL following the lines of IPL when he said: "I am using the platform of being an actor to simply facilitate its promotion. The limelight will slowly shift focus to the talent we see in the field."

However, John and Sawyan were of the opinion that a game so pure should stress on the domestic heroes rather than the glitz of celebrities.

Hema Malini turns 66, wants quiet birthday

After several hectic travel schedules, veteran actress and politician Hema Malini, who turned 66 Thursday, is happy to spend a "quiet" birthday in Mumbai with her elder daughter Esha and son-in-law Bharat Takhtani. She says she looks back at her journey with "affection".

"I was supposed to be in my constituency Mathura. But it's impossible for me to travel right now. So this birthday is being spent with family in Mumbai, and that means Esha and her husband Bharat. My younger daughter Ahana was supposed to join me in Mathura from Delhi where she lives. And Dharamji (Dharmendra) is in New Zealand to attend a function. So, he is not here with me this birthday," Hema said.

The actress of "Sholay", "Seeta Aur Geeta" and "Dream Girl" fame, has been travelling incessantly of late.

"At the beginning of October, I was shooting for Ramesh Sippy's 'Shimla Mirch' for two days. Then on Oct 3, I had to rush to Kanpur for a function. The organisers were kind enough to arrange a private jet," she said.

"From Delhi, I flew straight to Mumbai in time for Karva Chauth (Oct 11). I was scheduled to be in Mathura with my constituents for my birthday. But I can't travel any more right now. I'm exhausted. I just wanted a quiet birthday," said the Bharatiya Janata Party's Lok Sabha member from Mathura.

Hema wants to thank her fans for being with her for so many years.

"I don't know what people saw in me. But I've only received love and respect from within the film industry and from my fans. I look back with a lot of affection at all the films that I've done. If you ask me to single out one film, it would have to be Gulzar saab's 'Meera'," she said.

That was the Dream Girl's dream role.

"I wish Lataji had sung for me in 'Meera'. That will remain the one regret of my career. I even requested her personally. But she had her own reasons for not singing in 'Meera'," she said.

Whatever bitterness transpired at that time is now washed away. Today Hema and Lata are mutual fans.

"She gifts me the most beautiful saris. I've been wanting to gift her one. But getting the right fabric and design for Lata-ji is not easy. I've finally managed it," she said.

Decoding success of 'Haider'

$

0

Shahid Kapoor-starrer “Haider” -- a modern-day adaptation of “Hamlet” with Kashmir as its backdrop -- has achieved many milestones. It has become the first Kashmir-based film in many years to click with the audience, acclaimed director Vishal Bhardwaj’s first golden goose, and has reportedly been declared the fifth highest-rated crime drama of all times. Bravo!

The adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy, which is centred on a young man whose life is destroyed by fate, has not only crossed the Rs.50-crore mark, but the Rs.22-crore film has recovered its cost and is still counting. Bhardwaj co-produced the film with UTV.

But the success of “Haider”, where sufferings in the Kashmir Valley seethe through each frame, makes one wonder why a non-formulaic drama sans any fluff is flying so high at the box office?

Trade analysts say content and word of mouth have done wonders for “Haider”, catapulting it into a gold spinner. Also, the way Bhardwaj has merged the Shakespearean tragedy with the political conflict, it resonated with the audience, they said.

Punit Sahay, senior manager programming and operations, Spice Cinemas, admits that the film's box office performance has defied the general perception about the movie.

“People didn't expect it to do well because it’s for a specific audience. But the word-of-mouth is really strong."

“Now, most people are going for 'Haider' first and 'Bang Bang!' later. I've spoken to a few people after watching the movie, and they said that the performance was really good -- something that they were not expecting from Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. And people generally like Vishal Bhardwaj's films. He makes good movies,” Sahay told IANS.

Bhardwaj’s passion for the craft reflects in each of his narratives, but “Haider”, his third film based on Shakespearean dramas after “Omkara” (“Othello”) and “Maqbool” ("Macbeth"), is different as it broke the myth that such films can win appreciation, but not big bucks.

Set in insurgency-hit Kashmir in the mid-1990s, the film has raised the bar for others who are attempting a serious drama in the same league.

Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines sums up its success, saying: “It's a sensible film and the subject has been handled well. Right choices of actors and good music have worked in its favour. The content is really strong, plus it is Vishal Bhardwaj's film.”

The intensity and information in the revenge drama is close to reality, thanks to journalist Basharat Peer, who teamed up with Bhardwaj to pen the script of "Haider". Peer himself hails from Kashmir.

Bhardwaj's storytelling got ample support from his powerful cast -- Shahid, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon and Irrfan Khan.

Amrita Pandey, vice president and head (Marketing and Distribution), Studios, Disney India, said that ever since the film's first promos came out, it connected with the audience by arousing their curiosity.

"And when the film came out, people connected with the family drama. Ever since it was screened, it phenomenally and unanimously received a positive response," Pandey told IANS.

She too admits that phenomenal word of mouth played an important role in taking it to a wider audience.

"It was widely discussed on Twitter. The discussion on Twitter was the measurement of sentiments about the film," she added.

Distributor Rakesh Sippy feels that apart from the strong script and performances, "the fact that it was shot in Kashmir has made a difference".

"The word-of-mouth was so strong. You feel like you shouldn't miss it," he added.

Atypical "Haider" came along with typical potboiler "Bang Bang!", which had saleable names like Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif. But the larger-than-life big budget drama couldn't cast a shadow on "Haider".

The five-day long Dussehra weekend was like a blessing in disguise for both the releases, allowing them enough breathing space to find their audience and connect with them.

"There is always an audience for every film. Be it comedy or dark genre, people need to connect with the film and the audience was able to do so with ’Haider'. The acting and script are of superior quality," PVR Pictures' chief operating officer Deepak Sharma told IANS.

In fact, Shahid, who has been waiting for a big hit for some time, too takes pride in being part great cinema. "So haider becomes the 5th highest rated Crime drama of all time... And the highest rated Hindi movie on IMDb woahhhhh," he tweeted.

Even before the film had released, Bhardwaj's wife and renowned singer Rekha had said that "’Haider' is the best film of Vishal's career."

It seems now everyone is on the same page with Rekha, who has sung the song "Aaj ke naam" in the film.

Actors like Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur may be making inroads into the Hollywood scene, but actor Imran Khan feels the American film industry lacks good roles for Indian talent.

"To be honest, I don't think Indian actors get good roles in Hollywood. You either get to be the hero's friend, the guy who owns the 7-Eleven (convenience store) on the corner," the 31-year-old said here Wednesday on the sidelines of the ongoing Mumbai Film Festival here.

Cinema must be a weapon of revolution: Filmmaker Agneya Singh

$

He's young, creative and not afraid to take risks. Independent filmmaker Agneya Singh, whose debut work "M Cream", a "socio-political commentary on contemporary India", is doing the festival rounds, says cinema must, once again, be used to bring about a revolution in the country.

"I think that we need to bring cinema back into the socio-political sphere and wield it once again as a weapon of the revolution. 'M Cream' is our very own protest against the rising tide of conformity," the capital-based Agneya Singh told IANS in an interview.

"M Cream", made at about Rs.2 crore (Rs.20 million/$325,000), was named the best feature film at the 18th Rhode Island International Film Festival earlier this year and is on a festival tour in the US. It will next be screened at the Indie Spirit Film Festival in Colorado, before a showcase at the FilmColumbia Festival in New York.

It will also be travelling to Europe.

Portraying the new and rebellious generation, his movie follows the exploits of four friends who set out in pursuit of a mythic form of 'hashish'.

"After growing up in the superficial 1990s, I was struck by the resurgence of radicalisation among youth of India. This film is really an ode to the spirit of revolution, inspired by the brave and reckless defiance of my own peers and contemporaries," said the filmmaker, who's all of 25.

Son of journalist Seema Mustafa, Agneya Singh is an alumnus of the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. He had conceptualised "M Cream" during his stint at film school itself, but it turned out to be a reality after "an endlessly painful period of pre-production".

The going was tough, given the lack of funds, the "commercialisation of cinema" and "many highs and many more lows" - but, it was worth it for Agneya Singh.

It's no mean feat for a filmmaker as young as Agneya Singh, who says "it all comes down to taking risks".

"Established filmmakers are comfortable in their big budget bubble. They are used to churning out films that are guaranteed to work at the box office. All it takes is a star name, a rehashed script and voila!

"On the contrary, I think the young filmmakers of today are not afraid of taking risks and that's where the difference lies," said the director, who screened "M Cream" in the capital last month and is planning an official festival premiere for the movie in India later this year before releasing it next year.

Agneya Singh says his movie "epitomises the definition of risk".

"Even though we have received so much encouragement from young and old alike, there are those moralistic finger pointers that have already started objecting to the counter cultural elements of the film such as drugs or sex without even trying to understand what the film represents.

"Failing that, there are others who have objected to the politics of the film that are unequivocally egalitarian, humanist, environmentalist and rebellious," said the filmmaker, who truly believes that "people are interested in seeing films with an original voice and are relevant to the times".
