I feel life has just begun: Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan at 69

Entering the 70th year of his eventful life, Indian sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan is enjoying a bit of "musical flirtation" to connect the world and bring peace and harmony amidst conflict.

"I feel life has just begun. It has found a new direction," the great musician representing the sixth generation of the legendary Senia Bangash School of music told IANS over the phone from New York on turning 69 on Oct 9.

Khan has been on a "successful rewarding" US West Coast tour with his talented sons, Amaan and Ayaan, since Sep 6.

Collaborating with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Khan has written the score for a 'Sarod Concerto' called 'Samaagam', Hindi for confluence, that was performed by 50 musicians in Edinburgh church.

Published under Harmonia Mundi's World Village label, 'Samaagam' was also played from the written score by the National Orchestra of France last December when he was on a tour of France.

And when Britten Sinfonia, one of the world's most celebrated chamber orchestra ensembles based in Cambridge, toured India recently, the Khan trio played with them.

Khan said his father Haafiz Ali Khan, who taught him music, used to say, "become a complete musician."

"As a child I didn't understand what he meant. Now I am beginning to see that a 'complete musician' is one who can see good points in every system of music," he said.

He admired great European musicians like Beethoven, Bach, Mozart or Tchaikovsky and how with their system of harmonization with counterpoint 150 musicians collectively produce beautiful music.

"This could not grow in India," lamented Khan. "We don't have an orchestra of international level because everyone in our country wants to become the prime minister."

"We don't care much for collective work. Everyone wants to be a solo musician," he said.

But "the influence of collective work lasts for centuries." That's why he had written 'Samaagam' that anyone can play anywhere.

Unlike European musicians who read and play at the same time, "we go on the stage 'bhagwan bharose' (leaving it to god's will), improvise and whatever comes out, we can't reproduce it," he said.

But now at this stage of life, Khan said he is "composing and writing and enjoying this musical flirtation" hoping that "music will connect the world and we can promote peace and harmony."

The celebrated musician said he cannot understand how well-educated people boasting of doctorates could turn radical in this age of technology.

"Education has produced all these gadgets, but it could not create compassion and kindness in human beings."

"Nor have we been able to end hatred, jealousy and arrogance," said Khan lamenting that leaders of the world are indulging in doublespeak as they talk of peace and harmony while producing all kinds of weapons.

"We are absolutely committed to peace and harmony, not only of India, but the whole word. We have become world citizens" he said speaking of his own family, now in the "seventh generation of an unbroken chain of musicians."

Married to Subhalakshmi Khan, a great exponent of the Indian classical dance, Khan said his wife, "remains Subhalakshmi."

"We have not tried to make her Ayesha begum or Khalida begum because we believe we have a common god -- the whole world has only one god."

He was sorry to see that certain countries were injecting hatred among the children, Khan said calling it a "very cruel, very unkind thing to do to destroy the future of children."

The great musician said he hoped the godmen and gurus of the world would teach the value of love and compassion and harmony to the younger generation and not spread a message of hatred for "without love there is no joy in life."

‘The Shaukeens’, an upcoming comedy film, set to release next month stars Bollywood’s famous veterans, Anupam Kher and Annu Kapoor. The duo will be seen together onscreen after a period of 24 years. Last seen together two decades ago in Mukul Anand's ‘Hum’, the actors were excited to share screen space again after such a long time.

"If we had to get together after 24 years, it had to be for something really special,” said the talented Anupam Kher. Both the actors had been offered roles with each other in the past but it did not materialize. The duo had not even read the script of ‘The Shaukeens’ when they agreed to be a part of the film, in a move very similar to what they did for ‘Hum’. The actors play two of three 60 plus men on a look out for some fun in life.

They kept the film’s unit in splits with their banter, teasing one another while reminiscing stories of their last film. Coincidently, the shooting for ‘Hum’ was also held in Mauritius, the same place they shot for ‘The Shaukeens’. This film was a memorable journey for both actors and turned into a rollercoaster ride for the entire cast.
Veteran actors Anupam Kher and Annu Kapoor were so excited to finally work with each other that they made a promise to have dinner together every day.

'The Shaukeens' is a remake of 1982 comedy movie ‘Shaukeen’ directed by Basu Chatterjee. It stars Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor, Piyush Mishra and Lisa Haydon along with Akshay Kumar in his most special appearance. Produced by Cine1 Studios, Cape Of Good Films & Ashwin Varde Productions and directed by Abhishek Sharma, the film is set to release on November 7, 2014.

WIFW 2015: High on inspiration, technology; low on star power

$
0
0

From Mother Nature to weavers, designers used the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring-Summer (WIFW SS) 2015 as a platform to pay tribute to them. However, the gala, where technology met fashion, was low on B-Town glam.

The fashion gala, which concluded Sunday, saw participation of 124 designers, out of which some drew inspiration from Kashmir, Assam and Benares and also from Japan, China and Africa.

Opened by Aneeth Arora, her collection had summer-friendly pieces like cotton khadi dress, shorts, chanderi tops, blue denims as well as cotton and silk shirts in colours like white, blue, green and orange.

Oriental inspiration was part of designers like Alpana Neeraj and Atsu Sekhose collections and they even familiarised the attendees with Japanese culture on the runway.

If Japan-inspired creations grabbed eyeballs, the nomadic culture of Xining, capital of northwest China's Qinghai Province, was the focal point of Urvashi Kaur's spring-summer line. She made extensive use of tassels, pom-poms, tapes and ribbons on garments, which had a lot of Chinese-inspired necklines.

Nachiket Barve's show transported the attendees to Africa. Fascinated by the continent, Barve came up with the "Kalahari" collection, an atypical tribal wear it had everything that decodes fashion - front slit skirts, palazzos and more.

Mother Nature inspired Gauri and Nainika's collection. With a modern and stark silhouette, the collection was primarily designed in the striking colours of earth like white, blue, green and shades of grey was an ode to nature.

Organised by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), the five-day event was held at Pragati Maidan here.

Even Kavita Bhartia collection's was "an ode to master artisans and karigars".

Denim, which has returned to the ramp, was the focal poing of Rajesh Pratap Singh's collection. He also made sure that the weavers, whom he addressed as his "colleagues", actively participated in the show. The collection brought forward Singh's love for raw selvedge denim made with pure natural indigo.

In the fashion circuitm, stoles are considered trendy, but this time Poonam Dubey and Chhaya Mehrotra made our own "desi gamcha" a fashionable. The traditional 'gamcha' (cotton stole), a must have for people in the states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, got a fashionable twist.

This time there were two off-site shows too - on the opening, Tarun Tahiliani braved dust storm for his show at DLF Emporio and wowed fashionistas with colourful and artistic ensemble.

His clothes had lots of draping in blue and orange hue; red with yellow and more. Inspired by the works of London-based artists Amrit and Rabindra -- The Singh Twins, Tahiliani's range reflected elements from their paintings.

The grand finale, held at Quli Khan's tomb with Qutub Minar as its backdrop, by Rohit Bal was truly larger than life. The Kashmiri designer presented "Gulbagh", inspired by the rich and the lush Mughal gardens in the valley.

However, the Bollywood quotient was not so overwhelming.

Arjun Rampal walked for Bal, while Aditi Rao Hydari turned showstopper for Payal Singhal, singer-actress Monica Dogra for Kanika Saluja and tennis star Sania Mirza turned heads in designer Ritu Pande's creation.

Evergreen actress Rekha, though didn't make her presence at the fashion gala, Wendell Rodricks paid homage to the icon through his collection.

Neha Dhupia, who was the Twitter face of Wills Lifestyle, tweeted live from the venues.

Apart from that there were other initiatives taken to mix technology with fashion.

The FDCI launched the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week app in partnership with Sent.ly for Android Play Store with an aim to connect designers with visitors at the event.

A Wills Fashion Drone was also seen flying over the venue and capturing the best moments of the fashion week.

Wills Fashion Tag (Radio-frequency identification - RFID) was back for the second time. Through RFIDs, fashionistas at the venue were spotted sharing stories of their WIFW experience with their friends on social-networking sites. They could click a selfie, tell friends about what they're up to and what their mood was.

If that was not enough, Wills Rock the Ramp - 360 Degree Selfie was another initiative that attracted the attendees. Fashionistas were seen flocking towards the selfie booth that had a mechanical arm fitted with a Go Pro camera, which rotated and captured a 360 degree video.

Atletico will be our toughest rivals: John Abraham

Riding high on his team's first win against Kerala Blasters in their opening match, John Abraham, co-owner of NorthEast United FC, believes that Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) will be their toughest opponents in the Indian Super League (ISL).

"Yeah, I believe we've got our toughest game coming up against ATK. And then we will face FC Goa. Another tough one. Two very, very tough games," the Bollywood actor was quoted as saying on the ISL official website.

NorthEast United FC pulled off a hard fought 1-0 victory against Kerala Blasters FC in their opening match of the ISL at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Guwahati Monday.

They are scheduled to host Atletico de Kolkata Oct 16 and FC Goa Oct 19 at the same venue.

He spoke of his relief after his team's win in their first match. Spaniard Sergio Contreras Pardo, also known as Koke, scored the only goal of the match in the first half.

"Well, there was a lot of pressure on us. And interestingly, I remember Koke telling me before the game that if we win, it will be great for the spirit and morale of the team. I'm just happy with this win. It's amazing. I'm so happy. And all credit to Kerala Blasters who played fantastic and they really hung in there and they pounded our goal towards the end," he said.

The Bollywood star also praised the vociferous crowd present at the ground.

"The crowd was so supportive with all the screaming. They were awesome. The atmosphere at the ground was beautiful. We've played practice matches in a situation like this before. The young boys are used to big crowds. Being from the North-East, people follow football. This is great. This win means a lot to us," the 41-year-old said.

He lauded his team's effort against Kerala Blasters, pointing to the perceived lack of experience in his squad.

"Statistically, NorthEast United are the youngest team in the ISL and we were playing against the most experienced team. But there were no signs of any nerves from your team. The young kids playing all are aged 18-19 years. Give them three years and they'll be taking on anyone," the former model said, adding: "We've got the best pitch, the best scenic beauty at the back and the most fantastic audience. And not to forget, the best players. We love our players".

Time to send complete all-rounder: Lara Dutta on beauty pageant

$

Lara Dutta, the last Indian lass to bring the Miss Universe crown home in 2000, is mentoring aspiring beauty queens through her TV debut show “Miss Diva Universe”. She says it is time to focus on the new lot, their individualities and train them to be all-rounders.

“Miss Diva Universe 2014”, which premiered Oct 6 on channel Zee Café, is a whole new property and completely re-branded, she said.

"What I like most about it is that with the show, the country will actually get a chance to know the girls who are competing for international crown rather then seeing newspaper one morning and reading about the winner,” Lara told IANS.

Most importantly, the show helps in discovering the 15 contestants' individuality.

"All of them (aspirants) either try to embrace Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka or me, but I think if they can bring their own individuality and personality, it will be more important thing.

"Be yourself. Be totally comfortable and confident in your skin. That's what we are looking at," said the diva when asked about the USP of the TV show.

Srishti Rana bagged the Miss Asia Pacific World title last year, but it has been a dry spell for India at Miss Universe and Miss World contests since 2000.

Lara says there are several reasons behind the contestants not winning the crown.

“The (format of the) contest has changed a lot from the time Priyanka Chopra, Dia Mirza or I won. So, I think it's good step to re-brand the entire thing because internationally too the requirements are changing. The way the contests are conducted is way different from the time we won,” said the 36-year-old.

After winning the title, Lara made her Bollywood debut in 2003 with “Andaaz” and went on to do films like “Masti”, “No Entry”, “Housefull” and “Don 2”.

The actress, who is married to tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi and has daughter Saira with him, says that it is important for the contestants to get the right exposure.

“You need to send somebody who is complete all rounder, just one thing won't work. You are put in various sort of environmental situation where you have to work on your articulation, confidence and be on your feet.

“It is important that girls around the country really know what goes into making a beauty pageant winner. It's not just about girl who looks good in bikini or who has a nice smile or nice body or thing like that.

"It's a lengthy process to select a girl. I think girls should get more exposure before they compete internationally,” she said

Like other sectors, here too social media is playing an important role.

“Today, social media and things like that are so big that these girls are actually getting bigger media reach before they actually occupy a title. I think it's a great concept,” she said.

Can Bollywood stars give Indian football the 'kick' forward?

$
0
0

Bollywood stars Abhishek Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor and John Abraham have gone all out to support the inaugural Indian Super League (ISL). The celebrities are hopeful that their star power will herald a new era for football, as well as other sports, in the country.

Sports tournaments like Indian Premier League (IPL), Pro-Kabaddi League and Hockey India League (HIL) have already witnessed participation from cine-stars either as promoters or co-owners.

Here's a dekko at what some stars have to say about celebrity involvement in the ISL, and how it can help the sport.

* Shah Rukh Khan: I think the more leagues you have, the better it is for sports. I'm glad that people are venturing into football. It's very good. But I'm not venturing into it as it's too expensive for me... I wanted to pitch for this, but it was way expensive.

If it's a football team, then it has to be Kolkata for me, and it didn't seem possible at the cost that it was.

* Abhishek Bachchan (co-owner Chennaiyin FC - ISL team): I always wanted to be associated with Indian football, and it's something that I feel very passionately about -- India's position in sports. We Indians have a very long association with sports, and I do believe that a (film) star's support will help the sport. With whatever popularity I have, I will try and push the envelope. I think it's a very healthy thing to do.

I always wanted to have an Indian football team. We have a wrong notion that sports is not a viable career option. I want to change that. It's a serious profession.

My goal is that by 2026, I want the (Indian) football team to reach the FIFA World Cup and for that, ISL had to start today (now). It's (the scenario) not going to change soon, it will take time.

* Deepika Padukone: I don't think I can own a football team because I'm not money-minded, I don't understand business and even my father doesn't understand business. But if someone wants me to be the brand ambassador and promote a sport, I will be more than happy to do so.

I'm extremely happy that actors are being associated with ISL. I think it's fantastic that they are glamourising the sport as it will help spread awareness about the sport. So many sports are being promoted and so many biopics on sportspersons are being made. I think its great!

* Boman Irani: I've been so involved with sports since childhood. I live football, and if you check my Twitter, I was continuously tweeting about football during the World Cup. I'm aware of it and I understand football, cricket and tennis. I'm glad actors are being associated with a football league. It's a great step.

* Shriya Saran: Sports should speak for itself. I know a lot of actors are coming in, but I don't think it creates much awareness. I think it's less about awareness, and more about pumping in money. I think awareness needs to be created in schools and colleges. I don't think we should dilute the importance of sports with the celebrity. Having said that, yes, actors investing their money and giving their time might help to create awareness, but beyond that sports should speak for itself.

I'm the brand ambassador for the Indian Blind Football Team. Not many people know about it, but we have been playing great games. It's the blind people who play for India -- it's an another extension of what I do, and I love it. Even though they can't see, it's the passion for the sport that keeps them going.

Lisa Ray plans cancer research institute in India

Ever since Canada-born Indian actress Lisa Ray battled Multiple Myeloma, a form of cancer, she has campaigned for the cause and spoken widely of it to spread awareness. Now, she's planning to open her own research institute for cancer in India.

The "Water" actress, who has returned to the country, says she plans to join hands with Shiladitya Sengupta, who has worked in the area of cancer research and who won the DoD Breast Cancer Research Program Collaborative Innovators Award in 2009.

Together, they want to open an institute on the lines of Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

"Shiladitya and I share a common dream - a cancer institute similar to Dana-Farber here in India," Lisa said in a statement.

"I'm looking forward to collaborating with Shiladitya on the crucial issue of establishing resources for ongoing research into cancer treatments here in India. We have the ability to provide affordable solutions for diagnosis and treatment as well as patient support specifically designed for India," she added.

Lisa stands as an inspiration to several cancer patients as instead of wallowing in self-pity, she put herself out there and began campaigning for the cause.

Even as there's news that she is ready to make a comeback to films, Lisa is sure that she will continue doing her bit for spreading cancer awareness.

"My goal is to continue to spread awareness through the media, talks, and collaborations with medical professionals in India. Since preventative courses of action are as important, I will be writing extensively on a new blog and organising as many outreach programmes as possible in India.

"Eventually, I'd like to transform the experience creatively for the big screen and bring my experiences to that canvas to provoke even more conversation around cancer," said the 42-year-old, who also featured in films like "Kasoor", "Bollywood/Hollywood" and "Cooking With Stella".

"I believe that to transform the cancer experience in India, we need two major shifts: in general awareness, and then in funding -- both to make treatment accessible to all strata of society and to encourage research and breakthroughs here in India," she added.

Lisa has won accolades and awards due to her philanthropic efforts for cancer awareness.

She ran a blog called Yellow Diaries to document and share with the world her fight against the disease.

She even helped to establish and raise money for the first research chair for Mutiple Myeloma at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto; filmed an educational video on stem cells for the McEwan Center for Regenerative Medicine and co-designed the Ray of Hope capsule line for Satya Paul saris, among other things.

When Farah Khan yelled at Vivaan Shah

$

Young Vivaan Shah got a taste of director Farah Khan's strict ways on the set of the forthcoming entertainer "Happy New Year" - as did the other cast members.

Farah, also known for her fun-loving and exuberant personality, can be quite uptight and strict when it comes to getting a perfect shot from her actors.

Ask her cast about it!

When the "Happy New Year" team visited the set of "Comedy Nights With Kapil" for a promotional visit, Abhishek Bachchan revealed how Vivaan almost went "deaf" with Farah's yelling sessions, while Shah Rukh Khan quipped that Farah thinks that upon her own cue 'action', she has to kick all the actors!

"Farah ko lagta hai - 'lights, camera, 'action'!" (kicks in the air)," said SRK while shooting for the show.

Apart from Farah, SRK, Abhishek and Vivaan, actors Deepika Padukone, Boman Irani and Sonu Sood too were present on the Colors's show.

Boman said Farah can be a "real khadoos (rude)" when she sits on the director’s chair and also said that he gets really scared when Farah has the mike in her hand.

When Farah had had enough, she said: “Movie khatam hui hai, isliye yeh aise behave kar rahe hain! Don’t worry, mein part two bhi toh banoongi! (The movie is over, that's why they are all behaving this way. Don't worry, I'll make part two of the movie as well.)”

Nervous? No more, says Hrithik

You'd expect an actor to get a tad nervous before a film's release. But for Hrithik Roshan, 'nervousness' is a feeling that doesn't exist anymore.

The actor was surprisingly calm and cool before "Bang Bang" had hit the screens Oct 2.

Asked if a movie's release still makes him as nervous as he as when his debut film "Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai" was going to release in 2010, he told IANS: "No, that has changed inside me. I'm no longer nervous, because in the beginning, the focus was always whether 'I'm good or not? What will people say about me? Will they like me or not?'

"But that's all past. Now I focus on how happy I can make the people, how I can contribute to the industry...and if they like it, I'm happy about the smiles on their faces. If not, then I have to just keep going on and better it the next time. So it doesn't affect me now."

Well, as far as the response to "Bang Bang" is concerned, the box office figures indicate that Hrithik has managed to spread a lot of happiness among his fans through the entertainer. The film is ready to cross Rs.300 crore mark.

Randeep Hooda, who is a brand ambassador of Royal Rooster, launched his polo team in Jaipur.

On this Randeep says, ""I have bought a polo team and we will be playing when the Indian Polo season begins later this year. We'll be playing post October in Jaipur, Delhi and other places in India."

Randeep hopes to popularize polo, he further adds, "Contrary to the royal and uptight image of polo, I want to bring it to a younger generation. This is a great sport that can have a larger audience and appeal to more people. Sportsmanship is lacking in many other sports that I don't want to name. I am teaming up with the Royal India Polo Company and they are helping me in taking calls for the team. I will be looking at major corporate and private individuals for sponsorship too."
