"India has been on my bucket list for many years, never would've thought I'd be asked to come and perform there.

"At the moment I am playing a lot of different styles from the hip hop that I'm know for, to more dance and electronic infused styles to some classical pieces, so the Indian audiences can expect to be taken on a musical journey," Mohawke said in a statement.

The musician is being brought down by Red Bull Music Academy. He will perform in the capital Nov 12, in Bangalore Nov 14, before making the final pit stop in Mumbai Nov 15.

Mohawke, whose real name is Ross Birchard, is known for his hyper percussive sounds, which are genre-bending.

Veteran actress-politician Hema Malini turned 66 Thursday and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar has only good wishes for the "Dream Girl".

Hema had recently shared that she wished Lata Mangeshkar had sung for her in 1979 film “Meera" and that will remain the one regret of her career. The actress said that she had even requested the singer personally, but she had her own reasons for not singing in the film..

Well, all that is past now and today the two are mutual fans and that’s evident from the exchange of tweets between the stars.

“@dreamgirlhema Namaskar priya Hema ji. Aaj aap ke Janamdin par meri aap ko bohot shubh kaamanaayein (On your birthday, I wish you all the best). Ishwar aap ko humesha khush rakhe (May god always keep you happy),” Lata Mangeshkar tweeted.

The “Sholay” star replied saying:"@mangeshkarlata Bahut Bahut dhanyavaad Lataji (Thank you Lataji)!"

Hema has chosen to spend a "quiet" birthday with her elder daughter Esha and son-in-law Bharat Takhtani.

Intelligence, guts required to be in a man's world: SRK on Farah

After working under his friend Farah Khan's direction in "Main Hoon Na", "Om Shanti Om" and now "Happy New Year", superstar Shah Rukh Khan knows what qualities make her a success in the male-dominated Hindi film industry.

"Farah has a lot of self-confidence, which is amazing. Whenever I think that I will direct a film, I find myself lacking the self-confidence. Also, unlike her, I don't have the clarity," Shah Rukh, who feels he can imbibe the quality from Farah, told reporters here.

"I genuinely think every world has a male-dominated area. It requires intelligence and guts to be in a man's world and say it like it is. Farah exudes power. I think women are respected here, but the kind of respect she garners, is quite amazing," Shah Rukh added.

Their forthcoming project also features Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah.

King Khan, as SRK is fondly called, has several friends in the film industry. But he says he doesn't get ample time to spend with them.

"I'm working at most times. You get to make friends during the time you are working. I have not worked with Karan (Johar) for the last two years, so I have not spent time with him. With Farah, I'm working from the last one and a half years, but before that, for two years, I didn't spend time with her."

Film maker Dibaker Banerjee, who Thursday presented the critically acclaimed film "Bandit Queen" at the 16th MAMI film festival, says he is jealous of Shekhar Kapur for making the film instead of him.

"'Bandit Queen' was ahead of its times. I am here after a huge amount of depression that I went through after I watched 'Bandit Queen' when I was 23. I was only dreaming of film making then. I had realized that Shekhar had done everything that I wanted to do.

"I am here because I am permanently depressed by 'Bandit Queen' because I couldn't make it and Shekhar made it. I am very jealous that I have not made 'Bandit Queen' and Shekhar has made it," Banerjee told IANS.

Directed by Shekhar Kapur, "Bandit Queen", based on the life of Phoolan Devi, was released in 1994 and featured Seema Biswas in the title role, Nirmal Pandey among others.

Banerjee, who says he was in awe of "Bandit Queen", said: "After watching 'Bandit Queen', I was trying to figure out how to show sex on screen without anyone getting titillated by it. That's the most difficult thing to do and I have had countless chats about it with Shekhar Kapur."

Byomkesh Bakshi an original Indian character: Dibaker Banerjee

Film maker Dibaker Banerjee, who is currently editing his film "Byomkesh Bakshi", says his film has got nothing to do with famed fictional detective Sherlock Holmes as his film deals with "an original Indian character".

There were reports that "Byomkesh Bakshi" resembles resemblance to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character but Banerjee says it is not true and there is no logic behind this.

"Somebody told me that Byomkesh Bakshi is like the Sherlock Holmes stories... I think it's ridiculous. In that case why will I buy the rights of Byomkesh Bakshi, why would I buy the rights of 31 stories from Byomkesh Bakshi series. There is no logic.

"Byomkesh is an original Indian character and with a whole new connect to the Indian audience which a Sherlock Holmes cannot have because he is not from India."

The detective spy thriller, based on the popular Bengali detective created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, features Sushant Singh Rajput in lead.

Asked if he is satisfied with the film, Banerjee said: "I am still editing it and I have never been satisfied with anything that I have done in my life."

Rajesh Pratap unveils first collection with Shingora

Ace fashion designer Rajesh Pratap Singh's first collection with luxury textile brand Shingora was showcased here Thursday.

The designer, who recently paid tribute to weavers in the denim industry, has created a capsule collection of 35 designs in scarves and stoles using luxurious fibres like premium wool and merino cashmere.

"Old Indian techniques have been converted into contemporary designs with Rajesh's signature on them like ajrak printing technique but using in contemporary context. We are trying to make people aware of what India has. There is enough within India to use in fashion. Why should we look at west alone?" Shingora's CEO Amit Jain told IANS.

He says that the first collection took long as they had to understand his design sensibility and the designer had to familiarise himself with their manufacturing practices. But now they are positive about the collection's response.

"With interesting concepts and new ideas...mixing skulls (prints) with ethnic Indian things, I am sure it will appeal to people," said Jain.

Singh, who has been doing scarves from day one, is already "happy with the response".

"Tying up with Shingora...they specialise in this category and we were really happy and jumped on to it. When I was designing the collection, it was separate for men and women.

"Last few days, I showed it to select buyers and people in the trade and a lot of men's styles were liked by women, so that was a big crossover. Men pieces were picked up by girls and vice-versa," he said.

Basic jamavar was used and then the initial jamavar motifs were taken and "twisted them into something modern and what younger clients can relate to".

"You can see heads, patchwork, jungle and birds. I do a lot of ajrak prints, so I took a few techniques and twisted," he said.

The association is not limited to this season.

"We have finished our winter line. We will start summer and festive lines soon. Every six months we are coming out with a new collection," said Singh.

Actor Shiv Pandit, who became popular via TV show "F.I.R." and was appreciated for his work in the movie "Shaitan", will be seen in a key character in the forthcoming film "Meet The Patels". He is excited about the "clean comedy".

To be directed by Saurabh Varma, the film is based in Mumbai and is about two Gujarati boys Tom Patel and Jerry Patel, who know how to live life to the fullest and would do anything except hard work.

Shiv will play the "odd" Tom, while another actor will be roped in soon to play Jerry.

“I loved the script that had me in splits during the narration. Also, I am a big fan of the clean comedy genre, something I have not tried before on the big screen, Shiv said in a statement.

Varma, who earlier directed Manish Paul in "Mickey Virus", says he chose Shiv because of his comic timing in "F.I.R.".

In the hugely popular show, Shiv was seen playing Chief Inspector Hanuman Prasad Pandey.

It is because of that role that Shiv has been cast as a quirky character in "Meet The Patels".

“Shiv Pandit has been a great choice for the film and we feel he has the range to portray the comic shades of the lead character with aplomb," said Raj Mallik, vice president (production) of Krian Media, the producers of the film.

The film goes on the floors Nov 1 and will be released on April 24, 2014.

'Two Days One Night' connects big time with viewers at MFF

$

A working-class story about the trials and tribulations of a woman, who has been sacked from her job and how she deals with the crisis while struggling with bouts of depression, in French language drama “Two Days One Night” (‘Deux jours, une nuit’), has hit the right chord with the audience at the ongoing Mumbai Film Festival (MFF).

Screened in the World Cinema section at MFF, the heartfelt and humane story told by Dardenne brothers -- Jean-Pierre and Luc -- has found favour with moviegoers perhaps because the consequences of the 2009 recession, when severe job loss was suffered by thousands, is still afresh in their minds.

“Two Days One Night”, which is representing Belgium in the Oscars race in the best foreign language film category, has Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard playing the central character of Sandra, who has to deal with the job loss and depression problem simultaneously.

She can save her job only if she convinces her co-workers to choose her over their bonus and vote for her to stay.

With just one weekend to pull off the most difficult task of her life, she embarks on this emotional journey despite low probability of succeeding in her efforts. And one marvels at Cotillard’s performance for effortlessly emoting various conflicting feelings while dealing with rejection, humiliation and depression.

Her endeavour to save her job brings her face to face with the good and the worst side of human nature. In fact, witnessing conflicts and problems of her colleagues worsen her mental status and intensify her psychological turbulence so much so that she gulps down the entire packet of Xanax, a medicine prescribed to treat anxiety and panic.

Dardenne brothers's compelling and intense social-real drama, which was screened at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival too and won appreciation, underlines many aspects about the current professional and social scenario like how crucial “a job” is for someone and what lengths one has to go to save it. It resonates well because even today terms like cost cutting and downsizing is threatening many.

It also emphasises the fact that family support can help one sail through tough times. In this film, Fabrizio Rongione as Sandra’s husband Manu, who has a never-say-die attitude, epitomises that morale and emotional support system.

Although the film doesn’t have a typical happy ending, but post voting, distressed Sandra finds solace in the fact that she put up a good fight to save her job and gives her confidence to start afresh. She moves on with hope and positivity.

Not an easy story to be told on the screen, but Dardenne brothers, an expert at bringing such stories, beautifully portray the repercussions of modern society’s management theories on people’s lives and get ample support from Cotillard in making it powerful.

Tremors in 'Broken Hill Blues' are metaphor for society: Swedish director

$
0
0

Cinema is not just about entertainment. Sometimes, filmmakers bring stories that mirror the society it is set in. Swedish director Sofia Norlin toes the line with “Broken Hill Blues” ("Omheten").

Braving nature while shooting with professional and non-actors in minus 32 degrees without much sunlight, Norlin’s camera peeks into the life of people in a mining town in Sweden. While exploring vulnerability and fragility of human beings, the instances in the film become metaphors for the society, she says.

A mix of documentary and fiction, the complex story unfolds via several depressed teens growing up in Kiruna, a town on the verge of collapsing as the earth beneath has become so fragile from mining that it often trembles.

Norlin was “keen to shoot the film in the town she grew up in”, but finally zeroed on Kiruna and deftly juxtaposes the modern society with nature.

“I have used the tremors as metaphor for society which is shaking ecologically and economically,” she said at the screening of the film at the ongoing Mumbai Film Festival, where it is being shown in the international competition section.

What fascinated her is that “on one hand one hand there are industries, which are so high-tech and on the other nature, which is so old.”

Shown at Tribeca Film Festival, “Broken Hill Blues” stars Sebastian Hiort af Ornas as the aimless, angry, and confused teenager Markus, who is unable to connect with the life and people around him except for his friend Daniel (Alfred Juntii) and Helena (Janny Sandberg) who keeps herself busy with photography and swimming.

Why the focus on teenagers?

“Teenagers are symbolic -- the world is open for them and they can decided what should they be and the society be,” she said.

Tell her that the narrative lacks clarity and Norlin, who moved to Paris 20 years ago and works with teenagers in the suburbs of the city, said: “It is not a straight story and I am not giving any answers.”

“I wanted to make something that raises questions like 'what we leave behind for the future generation'. Or it asks philosophical and spiritual questions like 'how we can live with nature in togetherness' -- something that we don’t seem to do in modern and urban society,” Norlin told IANS.

“It asks questions about one’s relation with nature and each other,” she added.

She admits that while filming, she was looking for an unsettling feeling in the story and characters, some of which were played by non-actors.

She says that the film also symbolises what we are leaving behind for the future generation.

“We took out the iron from the mountain and then we leave those mountains of iron garbage and the children walk through them. And I think, this is what we leave behind for the children,” said the director, who was pregnant while shooting the film, and added that that she is worried about the future generations.

The slow pace, fewer dialogues, lack of clarity and the unsettling feel in the film may not appeal to many, but it is an interesting story to watch.

Norlin says that “Broken Hill Blues” was possible after she won the prize at the Stockholm International Film Festival, which had launched the Feature Film Award to encourage female directors.
