When Varun got drunk for 'Humpty Sharma...'

Move over Naseeruddin Shah. Varun Dhawan is now practising what the veteran actor preaches - method acting. The actor drank alcohol to lend authenticity to scenes featuring him in a sozzled avatar.

Director Sriram Raghavan introduced Varun Dhawan to the painful pleasures of method acting. For two of his important dramatic sequences in Shashank Khaitan's recently released "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania", Varun hit the bottle.

Since Varun was off alcohol, the sudden indulgence hit him hard. It's being said that the actor had to be physically supported by the crew as he wobbled and stumbled all over.

Varun blames Raghavan for the unscheduled spot of method acting.

"I finished shooting the first half of Sriram Raghavan's film when I came into the climax of 'Humpty...' .So maybe I was a little more intense in my approach than I'd have been otherwise," he said.

Varun's drink went straight to his head.

"There is a scene where I had to be drunk in the climax. It was shot at 4 a.m. I took a risk and actually consumed alcohol for the scene. Can you imagine, drinking at 4 a.m.? I hadn't had any alcohol for a while. It suddenly hit me and I was actually drunk," he said.

Varun says he was scared as he had lost control of his body movements.

"Yes, it was scary and it was a scene staring into Ashutosh Rana's big intimidating eyes. That scene is very precious to me," said the actor.

Actress Sunny Leone was awed by the "breathtaking designs" that she flaunted at the India International Jewellery Week (IIJW) as the showstopper of Sumit Sawhney‘s jewellery brand Apala by Sumit here.

Adorned in exquisite hand-crafted jewellery, Sunny stole the show as she sashayed down the ramp wearing a Hasli with Victorian elements and gold claws, which added a tribal touch to her look.

She also flaunted a bold calf-piece, and even a back-piece, which was a wreath embellished with Jade, cascading on the actress' back. She also wore earrings, cufflinks and head-pieces.

"Sumit's jewellery has so much creativity and finesse. Apala was a break from the usual bling on stage. I was awed by its breathtaking designs. The back pieces were very different and spectacular. I absolutely loved the entire set he designed for me," Sunny said post the show held Monday night.

The show was called The Royal Tribe, an amalgamation of the royal and tribal elements.

Sawhney said: "My line, by combining the tribal and the royal, ventures forth into a territory that was yet to be explored. My collection captures the true essence of the two, coalescing it into a beautiful synthesis."

The ensembles for the show, labeled Meraki, were designed by Delhi-based designer Atithi Gupta. Sunny, along with other models, dazzled in shimmer and cotton gowns.

Puja Gupta fit the bill for 'SNAFU' naturally, says director

"F.A.L.T.U." and "Go Goa Gone" actress Puja Gupta has been locked to play the female lead in Abhay Deol-starrer "SNAFU". Director Sethu Sriram says he decided upon her after a lot of deliberation but she fit the role perfectly.

In the film she will be seen as Aaniya, an ambitious corporate high flyer who hails from a small town and moved to the city of dreams to pursue her career.

The director is relieved that his hunt for the film's actress got over at Puja.

"This role is very critical to the storyline and the girl had to be much more than singing, dancing and looking good. After a lot of deliberation we decided upon Puja," Sriram said in a statement.

"Aaniya is an ambitious small town girl so we needed the vulnerability of a small towner along with high glamour quotient and who would be a head turner. I auditioned a lot of promising fresh faces and a few upcoming names, some of them were brilliant but Puja fits the bill naturally," he added.

He also thanked Abhay "who helped me in streamlining the process".

If a source is to be believed, over 50 fresh faces were auditioned over 20 days, pushing the shoot by a month.

The film is now on the floors.

Rani Mukerji, who came down to the capital to attend her close friend and designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee's showcase at the Shree Raj Mahal Jewellers India Couture Week (ICW), also got a chance to talk to him about the looks she could wear to promote her forthcoming Bollywood film "Mardaani".

Though her look is far from being feminine, dainty or elegant in the film, on ground for promotions, the newly-wed wife of movie producer Aditya Chopra may sport some special creations by Sabyasachi.

"I was having a chat with him (Sabyasachi) about the clothes I want to wear for the promotion of 'Mardaani'," Rani said here in an interactive session post the designer's spectacular show.

Dressed in an ensemble from Sabyasachi's new collection Ferozabad, which he showcased at ICW Tuesday night, Rani exuded elegance in a cream sari embellished with intricate zari work and teamed with a black blouse. The glow on her face, accentuated with an ornate hairstyle and a well-placed red rose in her locks, added to the entire look.

Sabyasachi happens to know Rani's taste, and she's a fan of his work. He is also the designer who created her special ensemble for her wedding, held in Italy in April.

"It had to be Sabya," she exclaimed.

The actress was especially happy to be present for Sabyasachi's latest couture showcase.

I can only say that I am very happy to have Sabya as my brother, my friend and my family. I'm lucky to know him...and yes, he makes such beautiful clothes," she said.

Rani's "Mardaani", produced under Yash Raj Films (YRF), features Rani in the rough and tough role of a police officer. She has gone deglam for the movie with a raw and gritty feel to it.

Making inroads in Bollywood was easy: Ajay Bhuyan

$

0

After two not so successful Telugu films, filmmaker Ajay Bhuyan, who is making his Bollywood entry with forthcoming romantic-comedy "Amit Sahni Ki List", says making inroads in Hindi filmdom was not challenging because work was offered to him and he never went searching for it.

"Getting into Bollywood was actually easy because after I finished my first film, out of the blue someone called and asked if I would like to direct a Hindi film. I said yes but on the condition that I will make changes to the script if needed. I never went in search of work, it came to me," Ajay told IANS.

"It was easy getting the job, but it took us almost two years to get the film released. I think that was the challenging part in this whole experience," he said.

Starring Vir Das and Vega Tamotia in the lead, the film, which releases Friday, is a rom-com narrated from a guy's perspective, says Bhuyan.

"It's a rom-com and I think such films are usually from the girl's point of view. This film is from a guy's point of view. Pardon my language, but instead of a chick flick, I would call this a dick flick. There's nothing vulgar about it but it's just that the reference is more suitable to the story," he said.

Vir and Vega were already part of the project before Ajay was signed on by the makers.

"Vir was fortunately attached with the project even before I came on board. Five minutes into a meeting, I realized Vir was perfect for the role as both of us had so many things in similar and I felt I can work with him without hassles," he added.

Quizzed about the difference he found in Bollywood after working in Telugu industry, Ajay said: "Everything is more or less similar except for the fact that the actors in Hindi are willing to rehearse and even undergo acting workshops before the start of a project".

"The two months' workshop before the start of the Hindi film made things really easy for me. You can't expect actors in south to take up such classes because they don't have so much of time on a project," he added.

Although keen on directing another Telugu film, he said, "It might take me a while before I return to Telugu. For now, I'm going through couple of scripts".

I'm too new to develop an attitude: Kriti Sanon

$

Two films old actress Kriti Sanon is baffled at stories that she has developed an attitude following the success of her debut Hindi film "Heropanti". She says she hasn't "achieved nothing to be arrogant about".

Could the fact that she has signed a film "Singh Is Bling" with Akshay Kumar have something to do with this?

Kriti defended herself: "How can I throw attitude? I am just two films old, one in Hindi the other in Telugu. Of course, my Hindi film 'Heropanti' has become a much bigger success than anyone ever imagined. But that doesn't mean I've started thinking I've arrived."

"I am just a beginner. The two films so far are baby steps. If I develop an attitude, I'll be finished even before I've started. Besides, if I started misbehaving, my folks would give me a tight slap."

The "change" in attitude, she believes, comes from people's change of expectations.

"If I'm slightly busier now, I am accused of changing. It's sad to be constantly judged for every move you make after your first success. If you wear your hair differently, you have changed."

"If you request for a little time to fulfil a commitment, you're accused of being arrogant. I repeat, I've achieved nothing to be arrogant about," she said.

Kriti says her time between the release of "Heropanti" and the shooting of a second untitled Telugu film was taken up on social networking in Bollywood.

"Unlike star kids whom everyone knows by first name in the movie industry, no one new who I was. Being an outsider, I had to literally introduce myself everywhere. I met individual producers, told them about myself, like any individual job-holder. Luckily, for me, my first producer Sajid Nadiadwala treats both Tiger Shroff and me like his kids. He's very protective."

Kriti has a three-film deal with Nadiadwala.

"But it isn't a binding deal. I'm free to work in outside production."

She is already doing her second Telugu film opposite Naga Chaitanya. Kriti's first Telugu film "1: Nenokkadine" was an average runner.

"Though it starred the the Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu, it was something unexpected for his fans."

As for the resounding success of "Heropanti", Kriti is over the moon.

"While we were shooting we knew we were making a good film. But it was only after the first trailer came out that we realised we were sitting on a potential blockbuster."

Having done two Telugu films, without knowing how to speak a word in that language, Kriti is open to offers from the South.

"But only if something really good comes up. I signed both my Telugu films before the release of 'Heropanti'. Now my priority is a career in Mumbai," she added.

Things got more than a little real on the sets of forthcoming 3D suspense thriller "Pizza" when the men in the movie almost killed each other. The film's leading man Akshay Oberoi had quite a close shave during the shooting when Arunoday Singh, hi co-star, almost chopped off his head.

"Actually in one of the scenes, Arunoday had to swirl an axe over Akshay's head. While the rehearsals went off just fine, during the take he slipped as the floor was too slippery and the axe landed right near Akshay's ear missing it by a few inches," a source from the film's unit told IANS.

"Both the actors were quite shaken by this episode as was the entire crew. It was only the next day that the shot was attempted again and canned to the cast and crew's satisfaction," he added.

Directed by newcomer Akshay Akkineni, "Pizza" is the eponymous remake of a Tamil blockbuster. It also features Parvathy Omanakuttan and Dipannita Sharma in lead roles.

"Pizza", which releases Friday, is jointly produced by Bejoy Nambiar and UTV Spotboy.

Why is Salman finding 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' tough?

$

Salman Khan says shooting Sooraj Barjatya's "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" is the toughest film he is doing in so many years as the role requires him to be as "pure" as he was when he featured as Prem in the filmmaker's "Hum Saath Saath Hain".

"It's ('Prem...') the most difficult film I am doing in a very, very long time because it's been 13 years since I have worked with Sooraj. I have changed so much, I'm not that pure person anymore. I have seen a lot more (sic)," the 47-year-old said here Tuesday in an interview.

"Hum Saath Saath Hain", released in 1999, featured Salman as a shy, mamma's boy.

To be the same Prem again, Salman had to unlearn everything he has learnt in the past years with films like "Wanted", "Dabangg" and "Bodyguard".

"It is very difficult for me to become that Prem once again. I am having all my films put together and this film separately, just to unlearn everything I have learnt so far," Salman said.

"Till that time I don't get that Prem, I don't feel it here, it is not going to show on my face. It is actually once again getting me back to what I used to be," he added.

However, Salman says that Barjatya carries the same innocence.

"Sooraj is exactly the same. That innocence that Sooraj had when he wrote 'Maine Pyar Kiya' at the age of 17...he still has that," added the 47-year-old.

"Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" stars Sonam Kapoor opposite Salman and is slated for release in 2015.

You need guts for paranormal roles: Dipannita Sharma

Actress Dipannita Sharma, who stepped out of her comfort zone to play a ghost in "Pizza", says one needs guts to play a paranormal role because it's challenging. She says she had to scream her lungs out for her role.

"Pizza", which releases Friday, is the eponymous remake of a Tamil film.

"It's not every day that you get to play a paranormal role. Since I love watching horror films, I enjoyed playing the role of a ghost in the film. Even though I play an extended cameo, the role gave me an opportunity to break away from my comfort zone," Dipannita told IANS.

"It was equally challenging because I had to scream so much, make these scary facial expressions over and over again until the shot was locked. But what I really liked about my role and the film is that nothing is overdone in it," she added.

Dipannita was not allowed to watch the original because "My director wanted my approach towards the role to be fresh".

Directed by newcomer Akshay Akkineni, "Pizza" also features Akshay Oberoi, Parvathy Omanakuttan and Arunoday Singh in lead roles.

Working with a first-time director was "exciting" for Dipannita.

"It's so brave of Akshay to make his directorial debut with a horror film. He's extremely talented and working with him was exciting because both of us are fans of the horror genre. It made working so easy for us," she said.

Playing a ghost wasn't easy for Dipannita as it left her "physically exhausted".

"I went through some pain for the film. I remember being hung on the wall with a harness for hours. We had to shoot this scene many times because the blood on the wall would dry up quickly, they had to redo it to make it look authentic," she said.

While the purpose of a horror film is to scare the audiences, she says that the film's unit had lot of fun playing spooky pranks on each other.

"The spot boys would not come near me until the make-up was cleaned off my face. We had so much fun pulling pranks on each other," she said.

"Pizza", which releases in 3D, is jointly produced by Bejoy Nambiar and UTV Spotboy.

There's definitely shortage of good writers, scripts: Chetan Bhagat

Author Chetan Bhagat, who has penned the screenplay of Salman Khan-starrer "Kick", finds that the film industry suffers a dearth of good scripts and writers.

"There are talented people in this industry. We have some good writers here. I feel there are some movies being made out of books, and there are movies which are also fresh. But there's definitely a shortage of writers and good scripts," Bhagat told IANS.

"You can't order a good script and buy it...there is a big supply issue," he added.

Four of Bhagat's books have been made into films.

His bestselling novel "2 States: The Story Of My Marriage" was recently made starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, and it struck the right chords with the masses.

Two others managed to paint a successful box office story - "3 idiots" (based on "Five Point Someone") and "Kai Po Che!" (based on "The 3 Mistakes Of My Life"), while "Hello", inspired by his "One Night @ the Call Center" did not get a great reception.

The writer is already impressed by the promo of "Kick", which marks the debut of producer Sajid Nadiadwala as a director.

"Sajid had bought the rights of '2 States', and after that, we became good friends. He called me to his office and said he is making 'Kick' and would like me to be part of it.

'I was okay because I had not done a pure screenplay before. I didn't know how it will all pan out, so on a gut feeling and on a personal relationship, I said 'yes'. When the promos came out, I was dazzled myself."

"The Lunchbox" actress Nimrat Kaur would "love" to work under Saurabh Shukla's direction but, squashing media reports that she's signed a film with him, she says she's "still in talks" for it.

Talking about it, Nimrat told IANS: "That project is actually still in talks. I haven't signed anything, nor has Rajkummar. Both of us have liked the project."

She is still waiting to discuss the project with Shukla, a veteran actor-director.

Malaika, Nimrat Kaur walk for Rina Dhaka at ICW

Bollywood actresses Malaika Arora Khan and Nimrat Kaur Wednesday mesmerised fashion patrons as they walked as showstoppers for designer Rina Dhaka on the second day of the Shree Raj Mahal Jewellers India Couture Week (ICW).

The designer had her reasons to finalise these two personalities who have onscreen images very different from each other.

While Nimrat is known for playing intense roles in films like "The Lunchbox" and "Peddlers", Malaika's dance moves in films like "Dabangg" and "Housefull 2" have their own fan following.

"Because I was showing a traditional line, Nimrat embodies a modern women who has got talent and acquired craft. Malaika is my sweetheart from earlier times. To me, she is what I was and what I will always be, a women who not only has a face but also a body," Dhaka told IANS before the show.

Inspired by the very verbose iconography of the gota work of Rajasthan, which she has shown in the past too, the designer took it forward this time by enriching it with a soft sensual appeal.

She recreated new styles in the Gota Patti, and placed it against tinsel sheers and lace.

There was extensive use of intricate embroidery elements from between the region of Rajasthan and some from the heartland of Uttar Pradesh, rearranged in a layered, lace-like manner.

Techniques of zardozi, kamdani, ari, lace and metallic gota were blended with tonal beading and soft embroidery to create a look of romance -- all in all, a refreshing collection for all style connoisseurs.
