Former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen, who is set to shoot her first Bengali film "Nirbaak", feels its like "homecoming" for her.

She said that she was earlier scared of doing a Bengali film, but now she's fearless about it.

Meanwhile, there has been talk that the audience may get to see Sushmita and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan together soon.

Bengal not willing to take on BJP, says maker of banned film

The director of an investigative documentary that tracks the events leading to the Muzaffarnagar riots last year and is "anti-BJP" in tone, Monday said the West Bengal government's decision to cancel the film's screening at a state-run cultural centre reflects its "refusal to take on the BJP".

The Muzzafarnagar riots in Uttar Pradesh last year left nearly 40 people dead according to some estimates, and over 50,000 homeless.

The documentary "En Dino Muzaffarnagar" by filmmaker Shubhradeep Chakravorty and Meera Chaudhury explores "how the BJP swung the caste differences between the Jats and Muslims, in their favour to garner maximum votes in alliance with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), right before the crucial Lok Sabha elections in May this year".

The documentary which was rejected by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), but screened at Mumbai's Prithvi Theatre in April, was scheduled for a showing at Kolkata's Charukala Bhavan July 12.

However, Chakravorty received a letter at the last moment July 11 intimating the cancellation.

"I think the state government does not want to take on the BJP at this point of time... it is playing safe. The letter did not give any clear reason for the cancellation... it just said 'due to unavoidable circumstances' the screening was cancelled," Chakravorty told IANS Monday.

The film had a private screening Monday in the premises of the Iran Society here.

According to Chakravorty, the documentary was shot in the months following the riots in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli areas, from August last year to April 2014.

Though it focuses on the string of events that stirred the agitation, the role of local political leaders, the situation during the mayhem and the conditions after and includes interviews with Jat rioters as well, the documentary also portrays instances of amity-how both communities helped each other.

In addition, it also offers a glimpse of the impact the riots in Muzaffarnagar - which lies in the sugar belt of western Uttar Pradesh - had on the sugarcane agitation.

"It is no wonder that the BJP won by such a large majority... since our documentary is anti-BJP in nature, the state government is not willing to show it," Chakravorty added.

Chakravorty's 2003 outing on the notorious Godhra riots, "Godhra Tak: The Terror Trail", had infuriated the RSS.

Fashion Design Council of India's (FDCI) six-day India Couture Week (ICW) is back with yet another edition of glamour and glitz. A line-up of famed designers is ready to mesmerise the style connoisseurs with latest in haute couture, and they promise to explore rich craftsmanship of Indian culture with their designs.

Shree Raj Mahal Jewellers India Couture Week in association with Logix Group will be held at the Taj Palace Hotel here, starting Tuesday. The event will showcase collections of designers like Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who is also the opening name of the event, Rohit Bal, Manish Malhotra and Manish Arora.

“This season promises to be a vibrant celebration of Indian treasures which will get a new-age interpretation by India’s finest couturiers,” said a statement on FDCI's official site.

“The event will see India’s finest couturiers showcasing their collections not only through the runway, but also exclusive fashion presentations, installations and previews, which will enable them to use couture as a canvas to paint their thoughts on,” said a statement on FDCI's official site.

Arora, who is known for psychedelic colours and kitsch motifs in garments that combine traditional Indian crafts with western silhouettes, is going to showcase his latest collection under the brand Indian By Manish Arora.

Titled Kaleidoscope, the designs are divided into six mini collections that take their inspiration from different things.

Another designer, Varun Bahl is going to present a modern version of Indian-wear staples that celebrate India's wealth of traditional crafts.

“The silhouettes for this line-up include the Anarkali, an eternal favourite, the sari, and the lehenga. The anarkali is a key component. The sari also gets a contemporary update in the form of the sari-pant, a mix two classics that becomes something truly modern inspired by India. A selection of traditional lehengas and classic saris completes the lineup,” Bahl told IANS.

The collection will have elements from almost all of his favourite shows: his signature rose motif, dainty appliques in velvet, intricate hand-embroideries achieved in strips of chiffon and gota, interplays between volume and structure, layered looks, and his favourite colours like duck-egg blue, navy, black, ivory, silver and gold, mustard, fuchsia, and pale pink.

Veteran designer Anju Modi is going to showcase a collection titled Manikarnika, an exploration of age-old craft and techniques.

“The embroideries are derived from the architecture, with the paintings of the Ajanta-Ellora caves as perfect muses to the artwork and details,” the designer, who has also roped in Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut to walk for her show, told IANS.

Apart from Kangana, the other Bollywood names who will add a glamour quotient to the fashion gala include actress Huma Qureshi, who will walk as a showstopper for designer-duo Rimple and Harpreet Narula on the final day of the event; Nimrat Kaur and Malaika Arora Khan, who will attend a special preview of designer Rina Dhaka; and Rani Mukerji, who will occupy a front row seat for Sabyasachi's opening show.

The India Couture Week 2014 will also travel to Kolkata, where a special showcasing of designer Anamika Khanna's installation will take place July 27.

Learning martial arts is necessity for women: Asha Bhosle

Legendary singer Asha Bhosle is all for women empowerment. While the 81-year-old believes that women must learn to strike the right balance between their personal and professional lives, she says learning a martial art has become essential for the safety of women.

"In today's world, moving out of the house alone is not very safe for women, hence, learning a martial art is a necessity," Asha said at Asha Ji - A Brimful Of Magic, a kick-off event by Young FICCI Ladies Organisation (YFLO) here Monday.

She believes that in today's times children should be able to fight for themselves from a very young age. Citing an example of her granddaughter Zanai, she said children should learn martial arts for their own protection.

Asha, who is an active professional in the world of singing and performing even at her age, also loves to dote on children. She rued the fact that women today are concentrating more on their careers, and abstaining from the kitchen.

"Even after a tiring day at the recording studio, I used to get into the kitchen straight away and cook something healthy (for my son) Anand," said the charming songstress, looking elegant in a cream sari.

An avid follower of international cooking shows, she believes women must experiment with food like "I did with my songs".

Asha, who sang a string of chartbusters picturised on Bollywood's dancing queen Helen, was once tagged as a cabaret singer. But she broke the stereotype by crooning the melodious "Maang ke saath tumhara" for "Naya Daur". Later, she went on to sing numbers like "Dum maro dum", "Mehbooba mehbooba", "Mera kuch saaman", "Piya tu ab to aaja" and "Chura liya hai tum ne" -- giving testament to her versatility.

The "In aankhon ki masti mein" singer believes that a mother needs to be an inspiration for her children.

"A child will never like to see their mother sitting idle and being sluggish," she said, recollecting an incident when her son Anand, on a very tiring day, said to her: "I will leave this house if you ever lose your poise and charisma in life."

During the event, Asha spoke to her awestruck audience about her life experiences and women empowerment. She shared the difficulties she overcame to reach the pinnacle of success and popularity that she currently enjoys worldwide.

The singer believes the power of positive thinking and will power can enrich the quality of a person's life.

"If at the age of fifty, a woman starts to give into her pains, she will lose her willpower to do anything in life. A woman should stay strong and take all her pains with her to her death bed and be a pillar of strength for those around her," said the singer, who made her acting debut with "Mai" in 2013.

"I have had a sense of self confidence from a very young age," she said as she reminisced about her childhood, when she lived on the third storey of a building and she had to fetch water for the whole family.

Her attitude of "Yes, I can and I shall" still reflects in her personality.

After declining Ragini MMS 2" and "Tina and Lolo", Richa Chadha has now turned down "Mastizaade". Interestingly, all movies feature Indo-Canadian adult film star and Bollywood actress Sunny Leone, but Richa says "it's a mere co-incidence".

"Mastizaade" is a sex comedy by Milap Zaveri.

"My team and I felt that I shouldn't be a part of a sex comedy at this point in time. I have all the respect for Sunny and the fact that this is the third project I have had to decline with Sunny in the star cast is just a mere co-incidence," Richa told IANS.

Richa, who has earned critical acclaim by starring in unique roles in movies like "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye" and "Gangs Of Wasseypur", is now gearing up for the release of five of her films.

Miss India title no longer pathway to films: Parvathy Omanakuttan

Former Indian beauty queen Parvathy Omanakuttan, who will soon be seen in "Pizza", says the Miss India platformn is no longer a stepping stone for models to enter filmdom.

Parvathy was crowned Miss India in 2008.

Asked if she chose to enter the Miss India contest to eventually be part of movies, she said: "Miss India is no longer a pathway to films. It's no longer a formula that you get into Miss India, and then into acting."

Many believe models can't act, but Parvathy says acting is not something that can be taught.

"It's very easy for people to write that 'She does not know how to act'. But I think acting is something you cannot teach; you cannot inject someone with acting skills. There are lot of people who belong to film background, but are not as good as their ancestors and some are exceptionally good," she said.

Her new movie "Pizza" is a horror film, and Parvathy says Hindi cinema does not have too many horror films.

"I personally love watching horror films, but unfortunately, Hindi does not have too many horror film, not many experiments are done with this genre. The one Hindi film that really scared me is 'Raat' (1992). The technical aspect of that film was very sound at that point of time and with 'Pizza' we are going to bring that level up with 3D and VFX," she said.

Directed by Akshay Akkineni and produced by Bejoy Nambiar, "Pizza" features Akshay Oberoi as the male lead.

Enjoy a 'Heyy Babby' more, but doing 'Baby' is fulfilling: Akshay Kumar

$

0

Known as an action and comedy star, Bollywood's 'khiladi' Akshay Kumar, who delivered a hit with "Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty", says he enjoys doing a range of movies for his fans, but loves the "Heyy Babby" genre of entertainment most.

In an interview, Akshay has spoken out about his next release "Entertainment", the fact that he works with newcomers and the variety of work that he picks on as an actor.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q. Your next release "Entertainment" is an out-an-out comedy. Do you feel your fan-base enjoys you in the laughathon the most?

A. My fans are incredible! Whatever makes them happy, I'm willing to do. They gave me so much praise for "Holiday..." and requested I do more cinema like this. But at the same time they said they still can't wait for "Entertainment" to release! So I think if I give them the best of both worlds, which I'm juggling to do now with my next three films, then by god's grace they'll be happy, and I'll feel worthy of their love and support. I am nothing without them.

Q. That's really modest of you.

A. It's the truth! Actors are the ones that are supposed to set trends. But it doesn't matter how much we think something works, if the audience says 'NO MATE', we can do nothing but walk away with our tails between our legs and come back with a better option next time.

Q. Curiously your main co-star in "Entertainment" seems to be an over-sized canine. The last film I remember about the rapport between the hero and a canine was "Teri Meherbaniyan" with Jackie Shroff. Do you feel films about the relationship between the hero and the animal kingdom like "Haathi Mere Saathi" can grab today's audiences' attentions?

A. Absolutely! In "Entertainment", I think you'd have to be pretty cold-hearted not to feel for the Man vs Dog relationship. Believe me, there are more dog lovers out there than there are action freaks.

Q. How relevant is "Entertainment" to today's definitions of movie entertainment?

A. Comedy isn't relevant, comedy is what it is, it's timeless, it's fun, and if anyone tries to make it anything more than that, then they are "barking" up the wrong tree. Pun intended!

Q. This is also your umpteenth film with a debutant director, a duo of debutant directors - Sajid-Farhad. Do you enjoy working with new directors as much as you do with established ones?

A. Absolutely, if not more, as I can be more free to be versatile with debutants than with established directors, as they love to learn experiment and improvise with scenes much as I do. Most acclaimed directors like to play it their way and their way only, which is great, because you can't be on fire all the time. But all kids like to run wild sometimes and if you're going to make a laughathon, you need to make it with open-minded people who have hearts bigger than India's map, and funny-bones softer than a puppy in a paddling pool.

Q. Curiously, you've lip-synced to a female playback voice in one of the songs in "Entertainment". What brought that on?

A. Well, I just couldn't resist. I was more than happy, if not delighted when I found out about 'lip singing' a female voice. When you go all out for a film why stop at anything?

Q. How keen are you at this stage of your career to do offbeat films, like you've done Neeraj Pandey's "Special 26" and you're doing his "Baby" also. So which do you enjoy more - "Baby" or "Heyy Babyy"?

A. I'll always enjoy doing a "Heyy Babyy" more, because entertainment is, of course, entertainment. But doing a serious "Baby" is extremely fulfilling and rewarding as an individual and an actor. But seeing as I have the luck and the luxury to be invited to be a part of both, I can only say this ....I love my work, be it funny, serious, emotional, or useless. It makes me appreciate all I have done, good, bad or indifferent. I'm just glad I've done something.

Q. One sees you working with a slew of new actresses these days Tamannah, Taapsee Pannu, Kriti Sanon...Why do you need to constantly work with newcomers?

A. Why not? They deserve the right to be given a chance. I've always chosen to be instinctive rather than calculated. I think that's one of the nicest things about me. If all leading men worked with the same talented heroines, how would our industry ever grow? It's my duty to give back to this industry what was given to me.

Q. And what's that?

A. Opportunities.

Pakistan fashion brand to start India operations online

$

Indians can now place their orders online for Pakistan's iconic fashion brand Khaadi, known for its traditional hand-woven prints, as the company is ready to start its e-store operations Friday.

The label, launched with the intent of reviving the ancient craft of the handloom and popularising the traditional medium, will be a direct competitor to India's own handicraft and handloom retail repositories - Fabindia and Anokhi.

"India has a large population of women who are looking for affordable, yet trendy fashion and we offer just that," Sharmin Raza, Khaadi's retail general manager, told IANS.

"We regard Fabindia and Anokhi as direct competitors in the Indian market. But we are confident in the strength and uniqueness of our designs, and quality of our products to gain a significant market share amongst the trendy and fashionable women of India," said Raza.

This is not the first time a Pakistani fashion house has used virtual doors to penetrate the Indian market. Fashion retail chain Labels that houses multiple fashion brands, was the first to take the e-commerce route.

Raza feels having an e-store is a "much quicker method to penetrate" the Indian market than opening a bricks-and-mortar store. They can be accessed at www.khaadi.com.

"We will be focusing on social media and online marketing as a means to create awareness of the brand in India," said Raza.

The brand that offers pret, unstitched fabric and accessories is already shipping to the US and Canada. They have tied up with international courier company DHL to ship to India.

According to Raza they will be using a pricing model in US dollars similar to their Pakistani prices.

"Indian customers will be responsible for shipping and if applicable, custom charges," said Raza.

"Rates will be based on package weight and destination. Any duties applied by the Indian customs authorities will also be the responsibility of the customer," Raza explained.

Akshay Kumar looks back at 'Holiday' success with pride

$

Actor Akshay Kumar is proud that a film like "Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty", which focuses on terrorism and sleeper cells, managed a successful run at the box office. He is also glad that the makers chose a "commercial comedian" like him to portray a "heavy serious role" of a soldier.

"Holiday...", released earlier this year, acquired a hit status in a year when there aren't that many successful films happening. Akshay has another view.

"Excuse my bluntness, but the triumph of 'Holiday...' has nothing to do with whether other films are running successfully or not...It has everything to do with the fact that such an honest, admirable film, was recognised by friend and foes, audience and critics the world over, and was admired and appreciated for all it's worth.

"That is what makes this wonderful blockbuster commendable," he said.

Initially, some of the skeptics had tried to write off the movie, directed by A.R. Murugadoss.

"'Holiday...' has fought against all odds, from schedules, to accidents and injuries. I couldn't be happier for the makers and creators. We all did well with this one," said Bollywood's beloved 'khiladi', who featured with Sonakshi Sinha in the movie.

"Holiday" was a mood-change for your career, considering it's comedies that you are most solidly identified with?

"My place will always be with action and comedy, it's where my heart is, and that's where and when my blood pumps. But my ambitions as an actor will never stop growing.

"Making films like 'Holiday...' inspires me to step out of my comfort zone with confidence, because deep down you know at the end of the day, no matter what the outcome, you know this project is worthy," he said.

Now post "Holiday...", Akshay will be seen in a comedy titled "Entertainment". Did "Holiday" seem risky?

"I'm grateful to those that took the chance with me, and chose a 'commercial comedian' to portray such a heavy serious role. I may have been around for a while, but there is competition out there everyday and everywhere.

"It will always feel damn good to know you're wanted for roles that can change many people's paths in life."

"Holiday" was presented by Reliance Entertainment and produced by Vipul Shah, with whom Akshay has given hit films like "Namastey London" and "Waqt: The Race Against Time" in the past.

Aditya Chopra's last directorial "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi", starring Shah Rukh Khan released back in 2008. But the ace filmmaker is not yet ready for his next venture as a director.

Rumour mills are abuzz that Chopra will soon collaborate with Shah Rukh, whom he also directed in "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" and "Mohabbatein', for his new film, but an official statement from Yash Raj Films (YRF) indicates that no such project has yet been finalised.

"While Aditya Chopra will definitely direct a film soon, as of now he has not finalised what he is going to be making next and has not even started writing the script. Anything at this point in time would, therefore, be unfortunate and misleading conjecturing," read a statement from YRF.

"As and when he does finalise plans for his next venture, we will certainly be happy to make an announcement," the statement read further.

Chopra, who married actress Rani Mukerji in Italy in April, is one of Bollywood's most successful producers.

Actor-producer Shreyas Talpade, who had earlier starred in Farah Khan’s “Om Shanti Om”, had approached the choreographer-filmmaker Farah Khan to do a guest appearance in his production “Poshter Boyz”. She immediately agreed to be a part of it.

When Shreyas met Farah on her set to explain the scene to her, she suggested that they shoot it right then and there.

Director of photography Mahesh Limaye, who was shooting an ad film with Farah at that time readily agreed to helm the camera. Shreyas called the shot, which was a single take.

While Shreyas was leaving the set, recounted a source, his associate producer Hadi Abrar nudged him, saying: "Did you realise that you just directed Farah."

Produced under Shreyas Talpade’s banner Affluence Movies Private Limited, “Poshter Boyz” is all set to hit the silver screens Aug 1.
