Kainaat Arora, who will make her acting debut with Hindi comedy film "Grand Masti", says that she always wanted to foray into the acting world with the entertaining comedy genre.

Other than comedies, she loves romantic films, and says she would have always chosen either one of them for her first film.

"I enjoy comedies and love stories and so I always wanted to do a comedy. But comedy is not an easy thing to do," Kainaat told IANS.

She said the "Grand Masti" experience was thrilling. The movie is a sequel to the 2004 film "Masti".

"It is fun shooting for comedy films. 'Grand Masti' was double the fun as 'Masti' itself was a big comedy film. The story is different this time. It is a different script. Being a part of the film by Indra Kumar was a treat as he is an interesting filmmaker," she said.

The actress will be seen opposite Vivek Oberoi.

"I was very happy and glad that I am featuring opposite Vivek. I was so happy as I have seen the first part. He is a very supportive guy. I have seen his negative roles also and have liked them. He has a great comic timing and there was not one even one serious moment for us," she said.

Kainaat hails from Dehradhun and she has completed her studies in merchandising from National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi. But her desire was always to get into acting.

"I always knew that I wanted to be an actress... since I was six years old! After my college, I was getting offers for advertisements. I also walked the ramp for many designers. Everything was happening on its own and I never planned much. I was working without a portfolio," she said.

The actress entered Bollywood with the song "Aila re Aila" with Akshay Kumar in film "Khatta Meetha", directed by Priyadarshan.

Popular singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who has sung several songs for superstar Shah Rukh Khan, has now lent his voice to Bollywood's young hearthrob Ranbir Kapoor in "Besharam". He says he doesn't sing for the old crop of actors now because his voice is as young as ever.

"I always sing for newcomers. My voice is so young. When Shah Rukh was young, I sang for him and now Ranbir is young, so I will sing for him," Abhijeet said here in an interview.

During the early days of Shah Rukh's career, the veteran singer has lent voice to many of his songs, including "Main koi aisa geet", "Chalte chalte" and "Tumhe jo maine dekha".

He says now he does not want to be the voice of older actors.

"When someone turns older, I don't sing for him as my voice is not getting older, instead its becoming more younger gradually," added the 54-year-old.

Swara Bhaskar, who was last seen on the big screen as Bindiya in "Raanjhanaa", says she goes through a lot of pressure in a city away from her family. But it is her friends who keep her stable.

Swara moved from Delhi to Mumbai four years back to build a career in the film industry.

“There are all kinds of pressures. One big pressure for me is living away from my family, as I am deeply attached to them,” she told IANS.

In her family’s absence, her friends are always there to support her.

“Living alone has been a big pressure, but luckily I've friends who keep me stable,” said Swara, who is mostly remembered for her role as Payal in “Tanu Weds Manu”.

Apart from her friends, there are few other things that saved her from succumbing to insecurities attached to film industry.

One was something that her father, strategic analyst C. Uday Bhaskar, once told her.

Sharing it, she said: "He said that, 'Swara, there will be many temptations and challenges in life. But every morning you have to wake up and look at yourself in the mirror. So, don’t do anything that you can’t look yourself in the mirror.'"

For Swara, life doesn't end at Bollywood. And she believes it is okay if something doesn’t work out according to your "plan".

“There are lot of interesting things to do. This is not the end of life. One day I’ll be 40 years old and will have wrinkles, but it’s alright and I will still have a life,” she added.

Recently, she was busy filming Abbas Tyrewala’s next project “Mango” in Goa.

Talking about her character, she said: “My character is like Betty from Archie Comics. She’s really good and sweet. I’ve to retain the fun and cute element in my character.”

Swara is also willing to work in the flourishing southern film industry too as she doesn't view language as a barrier.

“My dad is from Andhra Pradesh. It’s my grandmother’s wish that I do a Telugu film. If I get an interesting Telegu or Tamil film, I’ll do it. I would like to do whatever let’s me perform. Language is not a barrier,” said the actress, whose focus lies on performance.

An audio-visual version of the national anthem features Lieutenant Commander Abhilash Tomy hoisting the tricolour on the high seas off Cape Horn at the southernmost tip of South Africa during his extraordinary circumnavigation of the globe in a sailboat.

The audio-visual, released across theatres Friday, was the brainchild of Lynn de Souza, founder, Social Access Communications. It will be played before a film's screening here in theatres till Independence Day Aug 15.

"We want to inspire patriotism and courage in our youth and Abhilash is a role model and real icon of change to them," de Souza said in a statement.

On Republic Day 2013, Tomy had hoisted the tricolour during first solo, nonstop, unassisted circumnavigation of the world’s oceans in a sailboat by an Indian.

The video footage, edited by Guruvayur Films, has been set to a special version of the national anthem with music rendered by Audiosynkrasy. Social Access Communications has produced the film for cinema and television broadcast.

“Hoisting the national flag on a tumultuous sea at Cape Horn on Republic Day was an extremely proud moment for me as an Indian and a naval officer,” Tomy saud.

UFO Moviez, a leading satellite delivered Digital Cinema network, has arranged for the film to be screened from Aug 9-15. PVR Cinemax will also replace the national anthem usually screened in Maharashtra with this special film.

Over 60 national and regional television channels will broadcast the anthem.

"I feel honoured to have known him and for being the mother of his two children," Dimple said while addressing a press conference here.

"Kakaji was an enigma. He lived and died on his own terms. His contribition to cinema was unparalleled. He was a superstar. His courage, bravery and fearlessness even in the time of death can't be forgotten. He was Anand and he lived like Anand. Life with him was like a rollercoaster," she added.

Akshay read out a note penned by his son Aarav for the event.

"My son has written something and I want to read it out. He was very close to him (his grandfather)," he said.

The note read: "I remember 10 days before my nana passed away, he was in bed. He had forgotten everyone, but remembered me. I don't know what happened to him and I still don't know. I know that he was great and still stays next to me."

Akshay said the unveiling of the statue was not just an important event for the family, but for everyone who knew the superstar, who breathed his last on July 18, 2012 following prolonged illness. He was 69.

"It is not only a great moment for the family but for everyone. It is a big thing that the statue will be placed with lot of actors like Shammi Kapoor and Raj Kapoor," he said.

'Chennai Express' mints Rs.33.12 crore on opening day

Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone-starrer "Chennai Express" is chugging on with immense steam at the box office. The film recorded an opening day collection of Rs.33.12 crore, say trade experts, and it is expected to do well across national and international quarters over the weekend.

Heavy promotions for the Rohit Shetty directorial, coupled with a release on an auspicious occasion like Eid-ul-Fitr Friday, seem to have paid off. Even before the release, the buzz for the movie was strong, giving it a collection of Rs. 6.75 crore in the home country from paid previews Thursday itself.

"We've received an overwhelming response from all quarters and the film is being loved by everyone," Gaurav Verma, director - India theatrical distribution, Studios, Disney UTV.

"Though 'Chennai Express' is playing in highest number of screens for any film, we still ran out of capacity in most locations due to this huge demand at the box office and the film is on its way to create new benchmarks," added Verma.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared that the collective figures minted by the movie on Thursday and Friday in India amounted to Rs. 39.87 crore nett.

Said to have been made at a budget of Rs. 70 crore, "Chennai Express" had a grand release in over 3,500 screens in the country and 700 screens abroad.

The advance bookings for the film were strong, said Girish Wankhede of Cinemax chain.

"It's doing very well. On Thursday, there were 80 to 90 percent occupancy of seats. Advance booking was strong for this weekend. It will do very well in coming weeks also," Wankhede told IANS.

Down south also, the movie has received a good response.

Trade analyst Trinath shared: "This is probably the best ever opening for a SRK film in the state. Even though people voiced about the stereotyping in 'Chennai Express', none had any issues with it and embraced it with a smile."

In the film, Shah Rukh plays a north Indian, who falls in love with a Tamil girl, essayed by his "Om Shanti Om" co-star Deepika.

The number of shows were doubled in Chennai for "Chennai Express" as Tamil movie "Thalaivaa" didn't release there.

"Since 'Thalaivaa' didn't release, the number of shows for 'Chennai Express' were doubled (on Friday). We had about 95 percent occupancy for the paid previews and most shows over the weekend are booked," a multiplex representative in Chennai, said.

Mumbai-based trade analyst Komal Nahta didn't find the film as entertaining as Shetty's previous films like the "Golmaal" series, but he didn't deny that the movie indeed got a "fantastic start" in India.

Internationally too, the film is said to be doing well.

In the Gulf region, it released Thursday and minted $435,000, with 28 screens yet to report. But it is estimated to cross $550,000 by the time all screens report, said a source.

In Singapore, two screens are yet to report, but it made $95,359 on Thursday.

"Chennai Express", an action comedy, had only night show previews in Britain Thursday, numbers are 142,220 pounds with three sites yet to report.

In Australia, the paid previews Thursday amounted to $34,314, while in New Zealand, the figures came to $6,431.

Adarsh shared on Twitter that the movie took a "huge start in US-Canada", earning $2,60,000 (Rs.15, 776,020.00 approximately) out of Thursday night preview shows.

Officials at UTV Motion Pictures, which has co-produced the potboiler with Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainment, are happy.

"'Chennai' Express has taken the box office by storm in international markets. The movie is setting new opening day and paid previews records and benchmarks for Hindi movies in most countries," Amrita Pandey, executive director, International Distribution, Syndication and Disney Media Distribution, Studios, Disney UTV, said in a statement.

"In many cinema chains we've added shows and the movie was moved to additional screens and to highest capacity screens. This has been a massive opening to a huge release," she added.

While Kangana Ranaut took everyone by surprise with her latest avatar in Krrish 3,very few know that a lot of effort was put into achieving the desired look for the film.

The body suit that Kangana sports in the film, which audiences managed to catch a glimpse of in the official trailer of Krrish 3 was designed by Gavin Miguel - The all-rubber latex body suit, took over 45 days to create for which over 25 sketches were drawn up.

Designer Gavin worked closely with director Rakesh Roshan on the look and design of the outfit that was structured and customized to suit Kangana ‘s body.

If that wasn't all,the actress had to shed over 4 kgs to fit into the suit apart from several oiling sessions to ensure that the body suit allowed her flexibility in her movement.

All praise for Kangana says designer Gavin, “Latex is very tough to work with especially in a film. Wearing it for long gruelling hours can be stressful and overwhelming.

Kangana fought the odds after telling her what she would have to go through for the entire schedule. She was true to her character and bore a lot of hardships in that costume.Coming early on shoots, getting her body fixed in that costume took a clean 2 hrs. And then to be in that with terrible weather conditions.I think she is possibly the only one who could have endured this.”

Says Kangana, “ Sporting such a look has been extremely challenging for me….Apart from being chic and flexible we needed a look that wasn't attempted before in Bollywood.Though a lot of hardwork went behind it,it was all worth it since the feedback has been overwhelming”.

Tamil actor Vijay said he was saddened by the death of his 20-year-old ardent fan, who committed suicide here Saturday after not being able to watch the actor's new film "Thalaivaa", stalled from releasing in Tamil Nadu.

A police official told IANS that the fan was upset that he couldn't see the film on release day despite travelling to neighbouring Kerala (30 km away) as he couldn't get a ticket.

Barring Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, "Thalaivaa" was released in all neighbouring states, including Kerala.

Reacting to the news, Vijay said in a statement: "I request all my fans to show restraint. Please be patient, 'Thalaivaa' will release soon. I'm shocked to hear about Vishnu's death. All my fans are like my brothers and this is certainly the saddest day of my life".

"I don't know how to console Vishnu's family for their loss. If you love me and believe that I love you as much then please don't indulge in such acts," he added.

Vijay's "Thalaivaa", released worldwide Friday, except in Tamil Nadu, where its release remains stalled for several unclear reasons.

One of the reasons is that some theatre owners received threats from an outfit that opposed the release of the film.

TV actor Karanvir Bohra, who even dressed as a woman to win the judges' and audiences' heart in "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6", was evicted out of the dance reality show here Saturday.

While the remaining contestants are inching closer to the top spot, Karanvir was in the bottom two along with the youngest participants in the show - Sonali and Sumant.

The young duo, who are past winners of "India's Got Talent", did not perform last week as Sonali was unwell, and so, they did not get any points from the judges. Their stay on the show was entirely dependent on votes. But the judges - actress Madhuri Dixit, filmmaker Karan Johar and choreographer-director Remo D'Souza, ultimately saved them from being ousted of the competition.

Karanvir's exit has brought other contestants Siddharth Shukla, Drashti Dhami, singer Shaan, dancer Lauren Gottlieb, Mukti Mohan, Sana Saeed closer to the winner’s trophy.

Bohra, who ventured into film production with Punjabi film "Love You Soniye" earlier this year, has acted in TV shows like "Shararat", "Kasautii Zindagii Kay" and "Just Mohabbat". He is a trained dancer.

Passion, energy define 'Satyagraha' music

$

Film: "Satyagraha"; Composers: Salim-Sulaiman; Singers: Rajiv Sundaresan, Shivam Pathak, Shweta Pandit, Salim Merchant, Shraddha Pandit, Shafqat Amanat Ali, Arpita Chakraborty, Meet Bros Anjjan, Rahul Ram, Amit Kilam, Himanshu Joshi and Aadesh Shrivastava; Rating ***

The music album of director Prakash Jha's "Satyagraha" boasts of seven tracks, including a remix and a house mix version of a track. Composer duo Salim-Sulaiman Merchant has kept the essence of the political thriller through a mixed bag of romantic and patriotic songs.

The title track "Satyagraha" leads the album with its high-on-energy music. Singers Rajiv Sundaresan, Shivam Pathak and Shweta Pandit's powerful rendition can give listeners goosebumps. The peaceful melody of the 'Raghupati raghav' hymn has been turned into this aggressive yet passionate song with commendable lyrics. The addition of rock music adds to the number. Thumbs up to this one!

"Aiyo ji" comes second in line. With the melodious Salim Merchant and Shraddha Pandit behind the mike, this one is an interesting contemporary track. It could have been a boring number, but its background beats save it. The lyrics have a sense of naughtiness, making it a perfect romantic number. A lot of special effects seem to have been added to the singers voices as well. This only adds to its beauty.

The remix of the number is a typical DJ version with more beats and fewer words. DJ Shiva does not bring anything new with the remix. Since the original is a slow romantic number, the fast-paced avatar lacks any chance of longevity of being played in discotheques.

Next on the list is "Raske bhare tore naina". Sung by Shafqat Amanat Ali and Arpita Chakraborty, it is a perfect blend of Indian classical music with everything Bollywood. Shafqat once again proves his singing prowess, and Arpita's voice blends in very well. It has a little regional influence in the lyrics. Undoubtedly, one of the finest compositions of the album.

The house mix version of "Raske bhare tore naina" gives the original track a twist. Singer Aadesh Shrivastava's voice replaces that of Shafqat, but he sounds equally melodious. The house mix broadens the mass appeal of the song, especially for youth.

Energy and passion reach their peak with Indian Ocean members Rahul Ram, Himanshu Joshi and Amit Kilam jamming in the song "Hum bhole the". The music attracts a listener more than the singers, and a roaring 'jugalbandi' of sorts between the guitar and drums seem to emerge out of it, giving the number a certain level of aggression. A must hear.

"Janta rocks" is a good track; its peppy start can be misleading. The listener can lose interest after a bit as it is over seven minutes long. The lyrics are attention-grabbing and full of sarcasm, giving it a mass appeal, but even that fails to hold the listener's interest beyond a point.

Overall, the music of "Satyagraha" might not have a long shelf life, but it definitely leaves an impact on the listener.

The 1988 Tamil classic "Sendoora Poove" will be remade in Telugu with an all new cast, says producer Thandra Grihith, who has got the remake rights of the movie.

"We are yet to zero in on the director since we're looking for someone who could do justice to the original. Meanwhile, we are on the verge of signing up an all new cast for the film. We hope to start shooting from December," Grihith told IANS.

"We also intend to modify the original story to suit the sensibility of the current generation. I'm extremely thankful to the producers of the original for giving me permission to remake the film," he added.

"Sendoora Poove", which enjoyed a run of over 200 days at the box office, had Vijayakanth, Ramki and Nirosha in important roles. It was directed by P.R. Devaraj.

Thandra admits remakes are becoming a fad.

"Remake trend is fast catching up but it's not always easy to make them. One needs to make them with lots of responsibility because lots of expectations ride on them. The respect for the original takes a beating when its remake turns out to be a dud," he said.

Success is relative: Deepika Padukone

$

0

After debuting with a blockbuster in 2007, Deepika Padukone has hardly lost the taste of success. With "Race 2", "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" and now "Chennai Express" striking gold at the box office this year, one of Bollywood's star actresses says success is nothing but "relative".

Is it her year at the box office?

"If people are saying it's my year, it depends on my films," Deepika said in an interview to IANS.

"I think these things are relative. It feels nice to hear or to read about it. But, more importantly, I have been working really hard. I know I have pushed myself and sacrificed a lot of personal and family time. But in the end if the result is like this, you don't mind. But, yes, I think success is relative," she added.

Deepika's "Chennai Express", starring her "Om Shanti Om" co-star Shah Rukh Khan seems to be on its way to breaking records at the box office. The film released Friday to a roaring opening day response.

The more the success, the tougher it gets to keep up to it, believes Deepika, who made a rare successful transition from modelling to filmdom.

"I have to focus all my energies and hope that the next film is better. It does not get easier to live up to all of that. I want that with every film, the love, success and experience increase," said the 27-year-old daughter of former national badminton champion Prakash Padukone.

In her over five-year-long film career, the actress has been a part of various movie genres - thriller, romance, action, drama and comedy. She finds comedy the toughest.

"Comedy is the most difficult. Comic timing is something which you either have it in you, or you don't. You have to have a good sense of humour to be able to understand it. A split second can make you lose the punch.

"As actors, it is very difficult to perform it the same way every time, for the audience to find it funny," she said.

Yet, she seems to have given it a shot for "Chennai Express", directed by the new age master of Bollywood comedies, Rohit Shetty. In the past, he has made the "Golmaal" series and comic hit "Bol Bachchan".

How was it working with him?

"I believe that he has his own school and style. It was a new style for me. His way of taking shots and directing his actors is different. He always had everything planned," she said.

But he gave her enough room to try to improvise on her character named Meena in "Chennai Express".

"It was tough for me as I had to speak in a Tamil accent. With your director, you can also discuss and say that you feel like doing this (a certain thing). And if it works for the scene, then you do it," she said.

Working with Shah Rukh again was also a pleasant experience as she feels nothing about him has changed.

"He is still as caring, loving, charming, giving and protective. For me, there was no difference from 'Om Shanti Om'. Even though it took us five years to come back (in a film), we were always in touch," she said.
