TV actors look forward to Eid feast

0
0

Thanks to hectic work schedules, TV actors hardly get time to celebrate festivals with their family and friends. But for Eid-ul-Fitr Friday, actors like Hina Khan and Anas Rashid have planned to feast on biryani and kebabs after shooting.

Hina, who plays Akshara in Star Plus's "Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai", said: "I want to celebrate the festival with my family. I am looking forward to the feast, especially biryani and reshmi kebabs that my mother cooks."

"It is a special day for every Muslim because after a month of Ramazan, we are blessed with the holy day of Eid. My day starts with offering namaaz to the Almighty, followed by visiting people and relishing some delicious food," she added.

Anas, who essays the role of Sooraj in "Diya aur Baati Hum", has a working day on Eid, but he wants to make sure he spends some time with his loved ones.

"We celebrate Eid every year at my place but this year it's going to be a working Eid for me as we are shooting back-to-back. I'll probably go out with friends for dinner or celebrate differently post shoot," he said.

For actor Mohammad Nazim, who is seen as Ahem in "Saath Nibhana Saathiya", "Eid holds a special place".

"I spend Eid with my family and close friends. I would never miss this for anything. My fondest Eid memories are from my childhood. Our extended family used to come to our place in Punjab.

"Spending hours bonding with my cousins and siblings are memories I will always cherish. We used to have Iftar, and the best part was the food," he added.

It's designers' duty to keep handlooms alive: Krishna Mehta

Fashion designer Krishna Mehta has worked with Manipuri handloom for her new line which she will showcase at the upcoming Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Winter/ Festive 2013 here. She says the onus of keeping handloom alive lies upon designers.

"It is our duty as designers to ensure that we keep handloom alive," Mehta told IANS.

Through her collection, she wants to give handloom and craftsmen from Manipur a worthy platform.

"I would like to bring forth the work which they do for the other designers to see. Just because they don't really know what the world is like, they are in their own cocoon and in a valley with limited access. They are cut out from fashion. But if we can guide them with the right colours, textures," she added.

Mehta said she has plans to continue her association with the weavers.

"I would like to go back to Manipur and give them design guidance and show them products which have a larger market," she said.

The designer says the journey of creating her latest line was interesting.

"Its been an interesting journey for me. Manipur is a remote place. So it was challenging to be there and work there. The way they work is different, their looms are different.

"It was a bit of a challenge working through the way they work, but once you get into it, you realise that they are just so much more beautiful. There is depth in their work. They don't have embroideries and sophisticated ways of working and all of that... they are still what they used to be years ago."

Mehta has been a part of the bi-annual Lakme Fashion Week event since long, and she says, she tries to bring something new to the ramp each time.

"I have been blessed. I feel good when there is something new which comes up, which motivates me to go on and do something different and new each time. This season, I am working with a remote region," she said.

Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Winter/ Festive 2013 will be held Aug 23-27.

'F.I.R.' made me better actor: Aamir Ali

0
0

Aamir Ali never believed he could carry off a comic character well but his role as Bajrang Pandey in TV show "F.I.R." changed his perception -- and "opened" him up as an actor.

Aamir, who played the entertaining inspector Bajrang Pandey in “F.I.R.”, quit the show earlier this year. He admits that it changed his thinking on doing comic roles.

"I could never imagine doing a comedy show, but ‘F.I.R.’ changed my thought. ‘F.I.R.’ made me a better actor as it opened me up. I still have a long way to go, but ‘F.I.R.’ made a big difference," Aamir told IANS.

He was not confident about the role, but the crew made him feel comfortable.

"The director and unit were so good, they made me feel comfortable. They had faith in me. I didn't have faith in myself. They appreciated me," he said.

The 33-year-old has also been part of shows like "Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki", "Kya Dill Mein Hai", "Bhaskar Bharti" and "Hongey Judaa Na Hum". But "F.I.R." and "Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki" are the ones closest to him.

"The way the shows turned out to be and the love which I got... It has been amazing for me," he said.

Having worked in numerous shows for almost a decade, Aamir and his actress wife Sanjeeda Sheikh are not bothered by the new crop of actors on the small screen.

"I think there are a lot of newcomers and I welcome everyone. It all depends on you. We have made our name and whoever comes, it does not make a difference. We are both very confident. There is room for everyone," he said.

The actor is currently seen in "Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga", and he is loving it. "The makers are amazing to work with. It is an experience working with them," he added.

It's helpful if actors improvise lines: Niranjan Iyengar

0
0

Bollywood dialogue writer Niranjan Iyengar has penned dialogues for several actors, including Shah Rukh Khan, Irrfan, Arjun Rampal and Priyanka Chopra. He says he always prefers it when the actors improvise their lines on the set.

The writer, whose latest work in "D-Day" received appreciation, said that it is very important for actors to add a personal touch in the dialogues to make them more effective.

"I find it very helpful when actors improvise. When a film dialogue connects with people, it is because that the person who has rendered the dialogue has made it his own," Iyengar told IANS.

"If the actors are not convinced about the lines, then it is my job as a writer to convince them or change the line. I have never had an issue with actors improvising at all," he added.

Iyengar was biting his nails ever since he started work on "D-Day", directed by Nikhil Advani. He wasn't sure about the response the movie would get, but after he saw the final edit, his worries had faded away.

"It was a very unusual film right from the beginning. The process was scary as you don't know how it will turn out and what response we will get. But my fears were put to rest when I saw the final edit of the film and I saw that Nikhil had done such a good job. By that time, I had no doubts that it would be appreciated," he said.

"D-Day", which stars Arjun Rampal, Irrfan and Rishi Kapoor, released July 19.

In the past, Iyengar has written dialogues for films like "Ra.One", "We Are Family", "My Name Is Khan", "Kal Ho Naa Ho" and "Fashion". He said that he has always worked with friends and has never faced any sort of limitation as far as dialogue writing is concerned.

"My situation is a unique one. I have always worked with friends... But there were things which I had to learn from them.

"As a writer, you tend to think only from the writer's point of view, but there are many things like performances, time deadline and all. I started taking these into account and worked around it. I don't feel constricted at all," he said.

Creative clashes are bound to happen. What does he do in such cases?

"At times you feel you look at a certain thing from one perspective and the director and actor look at it in a different way. At such times, it is an incident-based thing. If I feel very strongly about something, I try to argue about it.

"But if the director is very insistent, then I go along as the director is the captain of the ship and his opinion matters the most," he said.

After experimenting with so many genres, the writer said that he has no favoured genre.

"I became a dialogue writer by chance. Karan (Johar) offered me 'Kal Ho Naa Ho'. In my head, I never had any particular genre. I don't have any specific preference. I get into every film with a fresh perspective.

"I try from my own life's experiences or from nurturing myself to do what is required to the best of my ability. So, honestly there is no genre which I like over another."

Rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh, who collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan for the song "Thalaivar Tribute (Lungi Dance)", says he will work with the superstar any day, whenever the actor asks.

"I did it (the song) for Shah Rukh Bhai. I had a great time shooting with him, Deepika Padukone and Rohit Shetty. I'd work with Shah Rukh Bhai any day again. He just has to ask," said Honey Singh.

The singer and T-Series chairman Bhushan Kumar had approached SRK for "Thalaivar Tribute (Lungi Dance)", dedicated to veteran actor Rajinikanth, who is given the title Thalaivar (supreme leader) by his fans. SRK also agreed to be a part of it because its theme was very close to his film "Chennai Express".

Prior to the film's release, Shah Rukh had even clarified that the track was not a part of "Chennai Express", which released Friday.

Praising Shah Rukh, Honey Singh said: "He is a phenomenon and a source of inspiration to all outsiders in Bollywood like me. We will be collaborating again very soon."

A huge crowd surrounded the entrance to Shah Rukh Khan's Bandra bungalow Mannat here Friday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. The superstar made it special for everyone, especially his fans, by waving to them and wishing them "Eid mubarak".

The Bollywood Badshah invited mediapersons over for the festival to his residence, where he also held a press conference and an Eid 'daawat' complete with traditional sevaiyyan and biryani.

His family - wife Gauri Khan, children - Aryan and Suhana, as well as sister Shehnaz joined him in waving to the frenzied fans gathered outside.

For the press gathering at the compound of Mannat, SRK was joined by Rohit Shetty, director of his latest release "Chennai Express". The film released Friday.

Addressing the media, Shah Rukh said: "Eid Mubarak! It is a very happy day. I like to celebrate my birthday and Eid with you all. I am here just to wish you."

The compound was decorated with beautiful lillies and carnations for the festival.

Earlier in the day, Shah Rukh had tweeted how he had to force his children to wear new clothes. He said he wanted to make sure they come in front of the media and the public to greet everyone.

"They feel embarrassed and will also be angry with me because I forced them. But they must learn how to come and say 'Hello'. But they are embarrassed and shy," he said.

Nevertheless, the 47-year-old actor says he loves to wave out to the public on occasions like his birthday and Eid because it is due to their love that he is what he is.

"I don't enjoy celebrating these days personally as much as I enjoy celebrating with the public. Whatever I am today, is because of them," he said.

Shah Rukh also said he will have an Eid party for his friends Saturday.

Salman Yusuff Khan hopes 'Freedom' shows his acting skills

Choreographer-actor Salman Yusuff Khan, who was last seen in dance-based film "ABCD: Anybody Can Dance", is excited about his next movie "Freedom". He hopes he will be able to display his acting prowess instead of his popular dance moves in the new project.

"I am excited to go and see the first cut. It is a film set in the 1980s and is a social-political drama. It has nothing to do with dance. Hopefully, I will get to show my acting skills in this movie," Salman told IANS.

"I don't want to get typecast as 'he only dances'. I want people to see that I can act and have that potential in me ... 'Freedom' will open up more avenues," he added.

Salman might want to get away from dance label, but it is because of his dancing talent that he bagged the role in the film.

"I was on board as a choreographer. I auditioned for one of the lead in the film and this is how I came on board," said Salman.

The 28-year-old wants to try out various genres to present his versatility on the big screen.

"I like to do romance, thriller action and explore the versatile actor in me," he said.

His fans will certainly see more of him as the choreographer, who is currently busy with dance reality show "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6", has his hands full.

"There are a lot of things going on. I am reading different scripts and choreographing for different projects. But I have my hands full at the moment," said Salman.

Sex determination is redundant: Shah Rukh Khan

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who was caught in the controversy over the pre-birth sex determination of his surrogate son AbRam, Friday said the practise itself is "redundant".

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) had slammed the actor over reports that he and his wife Gauri Khan had got a sex determination test for the baby. However, Shah Rukh had denied any such activity via an official statement in July, when he had confirmed the birth of the baby.

"Sex determination is redundant," Shah Rukh said at a press conference at his residence here to celebrate Eid.

He said he has been trying to cover up all such controversies in his life with happy moments.

"I am trying to cover all that up with happy moments. My son is born and Inshallah, he will be well. Being in the public eye is a part and parcel of life, we will go on doing it. Sex determination is redundant. I don't know how the lawyers will deal with it (case). I hope I am not called often," Shah Rukh told the media

The actor said that his newborn baby makes him very happy.

"He is very small right now. We request him to pray for the health of the family as he is closest to god. It is a fact that I am happy because of him," said the actor, whose film "Chennai Express" also released Friday.

'Thalaivaa' awaits green signal for release in Tamil Nadu

0
0

Vijay-starrer Tamil action-drama "Thalaivaa" has opened in screens worldwide, except in Tamil Nadu, where it's release still remains uncertain for reasons unclear.

The movie released Friday.

While one of the reasons for the delay is believed to be a threat issued by an outfit called Tamil Nadu Oppressed Students Revolutionary Force, the other likely reason is due to the rejection of entertainment tax on the film by the state government.

The movie was cleared with a U certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), but it is believed that "Thalaivaa" was denied exemption of entertainment tax by Commercial Taxes Department Review Committee citing reasons such as use of lot of Hindi and English words and violence in the film.

"The tax department committee watched the film in a private screening on Thursday, but denied exemption of entertainment tax due to the excessive use of English and Hindi words and violence in the film," a source from the industry told IANS.

Denial of entertainment tax means a cut in the overall profits of the film, and therefore, producer Chandraprakash Jain of "Thalaivaa", was keen to get tax exemption.

However, Vendhar Movies, distributors of "Thalaivaa", said the film is likely to release in the state Saturday.

"We have given the license to release the film in other parts of Tamil Nadu, but we are waiting for the final confirmation to allow the film's smooth release even in multiplexes across the state," a representative of Vendhar Moves told IANS.

On Friday, "Thalaivaa" was screened in a few small standalone theatres along the border of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

The film smoothly released in other states such as Kerala, Karnataka and even in Andhra Pradesh as "Anna", the Telugu dubbed version. It even released in a few screens in Mumbai with English subtitles, along with its overseas release in places such as the US, Britain, Canada, Malaysia and Singapore.

"Thalaivaa", which is directed by A.L. Vijay, also features Amala Paul, Ragini Nandwani, Sathyaraj and Abhimanyu Singh in important roles.

No Aishwarya Rai item song in my film: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

0
0

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has clarified that there is "no truth" to rumours that actress Aishwarya Rai has been roped in for an item song in his under production project "Ram Leela".

The rumours made people wonder if Aishwarya, the much-missed diva would dance her way back to the screen after her self-imposed sabbatical in favour of motherhood. However, the filmmaker, who worked with her in "Devdas" and "Guzaarish", has completely cut down the rumours.

"First it was Sonakshi Sinha, then Madhuri Dixit. Now it's Aishwarya. None of the three rumours has any truth to it," said Bhansali.

Aishwarya remained unavailable for comment, but a source close to her said: "At the moment Aaradhya (Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan's daughter) is Ash's one and only priority.

"Yes, she is slowly looking at scripts again, and some very good ones. But you know what? She gets tempted, and then again she decides now is not the time. She doesn't want to miss out a single moment in Aaradhya's growing-up years."

However, the source said that there are chances that Aishwarya just might greenlight the remake of 1983 film "Masoom", to be produced by Himesh Reshammiya and directed by Bedabrata Pain. For one, it is a story that Aishwaya loves. Secondly, the makers are willing to adjust the schedules according to her convenience.

"But an item song? No way," the source added.

'Thalaivaa' - A leader rises to eventually fall

0
0

Film: "Thalaivaa"; Cast: Vijay, Amala Paul, Ragini Nandwani, Sathyaraj and Abhimanyu Singh; Director: A.L. Vijay; Rating: **1/2

Standing tall in the list of India's best cinema are some films such as Mani Ratnam's "Nayagan" and Ram Gopal Varma's "Sarkar". In the opening credits, director A.L. Vijay pays tribute to these legends for inspiring him, but one wouldn't have guessed at this juncture that "Thalaivaa" would turn out to be a rehash of aforementioned films with some style.

The story is set in Mumbai, and it is about a local messiah of the masses played by Sathyaraj, while his son, played by Vijay, is living happily in Australia, unaware of the happenings back home. After introducing us to the short back story of Sathyaraj and his rise to power, the story shifts gears and takes us down under.

In Australia, Vijay is seen as a dancer and also the owner of a mineral water bottling plant. He falls in love with a fellow dancer essayed by Amala Paul, who joins his troupe, and all is well in their love story until Vijay returns to Mumbai.

Back home, circumstances force Vijay to rise to the occasion and become a leader. He steps in his dad's shoes and what follows forms the crux of the story.

We've seen and heard this story several times, haven't we? And yet "Thalaivaa" manages to impress momentarily, but where it fails is in engaging on the whole due to its extended screenplay, which clocks almost three hours.

"Thalaivaa" is mostly shot in Mumbai, where Vijay's "Thuppaki" was earlier filmed and there was definitely a feeling of deja vu. In both the films, Vijay comes to Mumbai, and happens to get himself involved in some kind of mission to save mankind.

"Thalaivaa", like any other recent Tamil film, follows a tested pattern of storytelling. Make a highly entertaining first half that ends with a pre-interval bang, followed by a second half with a twist and lot of action. It's also one of those films where a common man rises up to the occasion to walk around with an entourage and eventually treated like a don.

The first half is packed with some good fun. Santhanam's comedy and the eye-capturing cinematography in Australia, laced with the chemistry between Vijay and Amala Paul, especially in one of the dance sequences, is something to watch out for. This is followed by a slow and stretched second half, which portrays Vijay in his 'mass avatar' written almost on every frame.

The film's biggest letdown is its dragged narration that never wants to end. And when it is finally about reach its end, we are tortured with an additional song. If only director Vijay had trimmed the film by a good half hour, "Thalaivaa" wouldn't have earned the wrath of the audiences as well critics.

Nirav Shah's cinematography is top-notch as he successfully translates the beauty of Australia on the big screen, while capturing the frenzied atmosphere of Mumbai to perfection. G.V. Prakash's work only gets notice in the background score as the songs only end up breaking the flow of the narrative.

A.L. Vijay has completely gone haywire since "Madraspattinam", which still remains a path-breaking film in his career. In his effort to make films with superstars such as Vikram and Vijay, he only ends up churning half-baked products.

'Masoom' cannot be improved: Naseeruddin Shah

0
0

Veteran actor-director Naseeruddin Shah cringes at the very mention of the "remake trend". He says he neither understands the "business" of remakes, nor is he in favour of a new version of his 1983 critically acclaimed film "Masoom".

"I don't understand this remake business. Films that are being remade shouldn't be made in the first place. Bollywood is just betraying its complete mental lethargy by doing this! Earlier it was done differently, but unless you have some different angle to it, one should not do it," Naseeruddin told IANS in an interview.

"Masoom", directed by the maverick Shekhar Kapur, was about how the news of a man's love child creates havoc in the life of a happy family. Naseeruddin played the father, while Shabana Azmi essayed his wife.

It is one of Naseeruddin's favourite films from his career of over four decades.

The buzz is the actor-singer-producer Himesh Reshammiya has recently bought the remake rights of the movie. Naseeruddin says the film's story is not conducive to modern times.

"'Masoom' cannot be made better. I don't think anybody should try remaking 'Masoom'. In this modern world of emails and mobile phones, how is it possible that a child grew up to the age of 10, and his father has no clue of his existence?" he asked.

In the recent past, Bollywood filmmakers have shown a fancy towards a string of old movies. "Agneepath", "Himmatwala", "Chashme Buddoor", "Don", "Umrao Jaan" and "Karzzzz" are some examples, while the remakes of "Hero", "Zanjeer" and "Baton Baton Mein" are in the works.

Meanwhile, even at 64, the actor is continuing a versatile filmography. "Peepli Live", "Ishqiya", "7 Khoon Maaf" and "The Dirty Picture" stand proof - and with "Dedh Ishqiya" and "Jackpot" he is proving himself further.

Till date, he admits, he does every film with equal enthusiasm and with a sense of commitment.

"I have never done any film which I didn't want to do ever in my life. Every project that I have got into is with the same enthusiasm and same hope. Some have worked out and some have not. It's unfair to say which ones are my favourites. People still talk about films like 'Masoom' and 'Monsoon Wedding' and I get best wishes from people.

"There are also times when you are shooting a film and you know that the film is not going to work, but you can't walk out of a project! Too many people end up losing a lot of money; besides, there is also a commitment issue," he said.

A multi-faceted personality, Naseeruddin turned director with "Yun Hota To Kya Hota" in 2006. And the industry is still waiting for his next project.

But, he says: "It's too difficult to direct films!"

"I don't have the visual sense and to take decisions - both qualities that you need to be a filmmaker. I guess I enjoy directing theatre, but not cinema because in cinema, if you make one thing, it's there forever and you will be judged as a filmmaker on that.

"That time (for 'Yun Hota...'), I felt like making a film, so I went ahead. Now I don't know...may be I will or won't," he added.

Nevertheless, he is appreciative of efforts by filmmakers such as Anurag Kashyap and Tigmanshu Dhulia, who, in his opinion, are preparing the ground for future filmmakers.

"Anurag and Tigmanshu are preparing the ground for future filmmakers. We should celebrate, but not get carried away with this change," he said.

Krishna Vamsi's next a multi-starrer?

Telugu filmmaker Krishna Vamsi, currently busy wrapping up Telugu action flick "Paisa", is likely to wield the megaphone for a multi-starrer project featuring Ram Charan Teja, Daggubati Venkatesh and veteran actor Krishna.

"The discussions are on and Ram has already agreed to be part of the project. However, Venkatesh and Krishna are yet to be approached. Vamsi wants to cast them as well provided they like the script and give the final nod," a source close to the director told IANS.

The film is likely to be produced by Bandla Ganesh, who is on a winning streak after successful films such as "Gabbar Singh" and "Baadshah".

"Vamsi is currently is busy bringing 'Paisa' to the theaters. Post its release, he is expected to spend more time on the project and that's when we will have more clarity on this project," source added.

If this project materialises, it will be the first time actors from three different cinema families of Telugu industry will rub shoulders in the same film.

Earlier this year, Venkatesh starred in Telugu multi-starrer "Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu", which turned out to be a blockbuster.

Lakhia heads to Bangkok for Prakash Raj's dubbing

0

Filmmaker Apoorva Lakhia, whose remake of the 1973 film "Zanjeer" is being readied for release, had to travel this week to Bangkok for Prakash Raj's dubbing.

Prakash is busy shooting there for writers-turned-directorial-duo Sajid-Farhad's "It's Entertainment".

A source from Bangkok said: "We were surprised to see Apoorva Lakhia at our location. We thought he had come to meet Akshay Kumar for a narration. But he told us he is here to dub with Prakash Raj."

Further probing revealed that all the other actors, including the enormously-busy Ram Charan Teja and Priyanka Chopra had already dubbed for "Zanjeer". Only Prakash Raj's dubbing remained.

Said the source: "This is not the first time that Prakash Raj's dubbing was on hold while he shot for another film. During 'Dabangg 2', director Arbaaz Khan waited as long as he could to get Prakash Raj's dubbing dates and then got them dubbed by another dubbing artiste."

"Apu (Apoorva) didn't want to make the same mistake. Prakash's voice is too distinctive and familiar. He couldn't risk messing it up. If you remember in the original 'Zanjeer', Ajit's voice carried the villainous authority of the character. Prakash Raj's Teja couldn't speak in an impersonator's voice. So Apu flew down to Bangkok to dub the actor's dialogues."

Actress Sridevi is reportedly busy going through the story of a film, which might see her work with director-choreographer Prabhudheva on the big screen.

At the launch of Wee store, when asked if she is working with Prabhudheva in a movie, Sridevi said: "I am listening to a lot of stories. Prabhudheva has always been my favourite dancer, actor, choreographer. If there is something, then I would definitely like to work with him."

"Right now I am listening to the story and very soon you will get to know about the film," she added.

Sridevi made a comeback to Bollywood after 15 years with the superhit "English Vinglish" last year. But she is still to make an announcement about her next film.

Prabhudheva and Sridevi had taken to the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards stage earlier this year to match steps with each other.
