Actress Huma Qureshi has high hopes from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal but has one issue with his cabinet -- the lack of women.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Kejriwal Saturday took oath as Delhi's chief minister at the Ramlila Maidan here along with six ministers, all of whom are men. Hence, the actress questioned the absence of female representation.

"More power to change @ArvindKejriwal Looking at better governance and safety for women in Delhi. But no female representation in the cabinet," she tweeted.

Kejriwal's close aide Manish Sisodia, who will be the deputy chief minister, was also sworn in along with ministers Satyendra Jain, Gopal Rai, Asim Mohammed Khan, Sandeep Kumar and Jitendra Singh Tomar.

Celebrity photographer Atul Kasbekar also noted: "No women in the Kejriwal cabinet could well be its Achilles heel or its pin striped suit...Disappointing."

Hairstylist Sapna Bhavnani tweeted: How many women in @ArvindKejriwal's cabinet? #AAPkaCM #AAPStorm #AAPKiDilli #KejriwalChecksIn #5SaalKejriwal."

Kejriwal again sings Manna Dey song

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal capped his speech at his oath-taking ceremony here Saturday by singing a few lines of a song of brotherhood - the same Manna Dey song which the AAP leader sang at the Ramlila Maidan in 2013.

"Insaan se insaan ka ho bhaichara, yehi hai paigam hamara (People should have brotherly relations, this is our message)," he sang to loud cheers.

"Har ek mahal se kaho ke/ Jhopdiyo me diye jalaye/ Chhoto aur bado me ab/ Koi phark nahi rah jaye. (Every palace should light up lamps in huts, and there should be no differences between rich and poor)."

The revolutionary song, sung by Manna Dey and penned by Pradeep, is from an old Bollywood film, "Paigham".

When Kejriwal sang a song during his oath-taking ceremony in 2013, he broke convention as it was quite unlike what any chief minister has done in India until then.

On Saturday, he once again struck a chord with the 'aam aadmi' by singing the song.

Debutant filmmaker Suman Ganguli, who is all set with his film "Blue Mountains", says it's a musical entertainer which emphasises on the importance of parenting styles and family values.

"The film portrays the issues that adolescents face all across the globe - be it in England or in India," Ganguli told IANS.

"It emphasises on the importance of parenting styles, family values and how peers and teachers play an equally significant role in shaping a person's life and future. It also gives out a very important lesson for youngsters on how to deal with success and failure," he added

Produced by Sarju Kumaar Acharjee and Rajesh Kumar Jain under the banners Jeevandhara Productions Private Limited and Krish Movies, the film is slated to release in mid-2015.

The movie stars child actor Yatharth Rastogi.

Explaining the reason behind casting the "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs 2009" winner, Ganguli said: "Because the film is about a singer, we needed somebody who could actually sing. Yatharth is the perfect choice for the character and he played it with the right vigour."

Yatharth had to undergo six months of rigorous acting workshop for the movie.

Other actors in the film include Gracy Singh, Ranvir Shorey, Rajpal Yadav, Arif Zakaria, Mahesh Thakur and Amit Behl, who are "just brilliant in their nuanced performances", the director added.

'Lingaa' distributors to 'beg' for compensation

Distributors of superstar Rajinikanth-starrer "Lingaa", who demanded compensation for the heavy losses incurred while distributing and exhibiting the film, have decided go on a mass begging protest.

The distributors and theatre owners have decided to beg for compensation after their plea for refund of Rs.35 crore was declined by producer Rockline Venkatesh.

"Last month it was decided we will be compensated after extensive accounting of the losses. And for this, Rajini sir had appointed his friend and distributor Tirupur Subramaniam, who ascertained the quantum loss suffered by us. However, the producer is unwilling to pay Rs.35 crore," distributor Singaravadivelan told IANS.

He claims Eros International had bought the theatrical rights of K.S. Ravikumar-directed "Lingaaa at a whopping price of over Rs.100 crore.

"The amount we claim as refund is far less than the salary paid to Rajinikanth. If Eros had paid so much to buy the film, we don't understand why it is difficult for producer Venkatesh to refund us when he had promised us that the film will do better business than 'Enthiran'," he said.

The mass begging protest is expected to start here Tuesday from outside actor Rajinikanth's residence.

"They've made us beg for the refund. And we will do it as we've run out of options. We will beg right outside Rajinikanth's house," he added.

Following the hunger strike last month, producer Venkatesh had agreed to reimburse ten percent of the losses incurred by the distributors, who turned down the offer.

RGV's last known popular romantic film was "Prema Katha", which even won the prestigious Nandi award in 1999.

"This project marks Ramu sir's grand comeback to the romance genre. I think it's his first romantic musical after 'Rangeela', and it's going to be a treat for all those who closely follow his films. It will also be released in Hindi," Nandoo, who plays the lead in the film, told IANS.

Nandoo and his co-star Anaika Soti spent about 60 hours shooting for a special song in the film.

"We shot for the song for about five days at a stretch. Initially, the idea of a rain song sounded fun, but by the time we finished shooting the song, we were completely exhausted," he added.

The film revolves around a young couple, who rush into marriage, only to realise that their expectations don't match.

"The story revolves around 365 days in the life of a couple and how time distances them," said Nandoo.

Before he emerged as a popular playback singer, Mohit Chauhan had tasted success with his band Silk Route, which dissolved in the early 2000s. Now, the “Tum ho” hitmaker says he sometimes misses having his own gang of musicians.

Before he delivered Bollywood hits like “Pee loon”, “Tum se hi” and “Masakali”, Mohit used to front the Silk Route band, known for the chartbuster "Dooba dooba".

“Sometimes I think about being part of a band. It has crossed my mind. Being in a band is like a small family. You travel together, make music and share time with each other. I miss those days sometimes, but I am not sure if I’ll join a band again,” Chauhan told IANS.

Come Feb 22, music lovers in Gurgaon will get to witness him performing at RED LiVE presents 'Asli Rockstars with Atif Aslam and Mohit Chauhan'.

Asked what “Asli Rockstar” means to him, he said: "He would be someone who has done things in his own way, who is original and believes in himself."

Among Bollywood singers, he considers late legendary artiste Kishore Kumar as a true blue rockstar.

“Kishore Kumar was multi-talented and original, so I really respect him,” said Chauhan, who has worked with great Indian musicians including Grammy-winning music maestro A.R.Rahman.

And like the late singer, if Chauhan gets an opportunity, he would like to try his hand at acting.

“I used to do theatre. If anything interesting comes up, I would act. It doesn’t have to be only a lead role. The story should be interesting,” he said.

Talking about original work, the singer, who likes to record songs with “aesthetic sense”, also mentioned that he is working on his own album.

“I'm putting together the songs. I will be releasing my own album soon this year. They are my thoughts converted to songs,” he shared about his new project.

When he is not working, Chauhan, who hails from Himachal Pradesh, likes to travel to the mountains.

Censors knock out abusive words from 'Badlapur'

The intrinsically violent "Badlapur", which tells the tale of a man getting even with his wife's killer, has been cleared without any visual cuts. However, the axe has fallen on the 'F' word, not once but twice over.

A source said: "While the violent visual content of 'Badlapur' has been given a go ahead by the CBFC, they have objected to three abusive words which have now been deleted."

The 'F' word is said to have been knocked off twice.

"The word 'f..k' has been replaced by 'hell' and the word 'f..king' has been muted. Elsewhere, a Hindi abuse had to be replaced too," the source said.

Director Sriram Raghavan seems fine with the cuts.

"The language is commensurate with the characters' state of mind. These are not your average dinner table conversationalists. Nawazuddin (Siddiqui) is a killer. Varun (Dhawan) is a man on a rampage, and Huma Qureshi plays a prostitute," he said.

India not primary market for my music: Grammy winner Ricky Kej

$
0
0

Bengaluru-based musician Ricky Kej, who was honoured with a Grammy Award, says his home country is not the main market for his music. He is, however, ready to compose for a Bollywood movie if the script moves him emotionally.

His 2014 release "Winds of Samsara", for which he won the Best New Age Album trophy at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards earlier this month at Los Angeles, debuted at number one on the US Billboard charts.

The album became popular in the US much before he walked home with the prestigious golden gramophone.

"We remained in the top 10 for 12 weeks and it is one of highest selling instrumental albums of 2014. Even on radio, we debuted at number one. So, the album was already extremely popular before the Grammy nomination.

"About sales in India, I am not aware of any of the figures because India has never been a primary market for my music," Kej told IANS in an email interaction.

He has been vocal about piracy affecting the artistes in India.

Suggesting what can be done to curb it, the 33-year-old said: "I think two things need to be done -- the anti-piracy laws that exist need to be enforced very strongly and awareness needs to be created that piracy is not a victimless crime. The victim is the artiste."

The Grammy-winning album, which spotlights the musical, cultural and political connections between India and South Africa from late freedom fighters Mahatma Gandhi to Nelson Mandela, is a collaboration with South African flutist Wouter Kellerman.

This certainly isn't the end of collaboration between the two musicians.

"I definitely plan to do another collaboration with Wouter. 'Winds of Samsara' was a fantastic debut collaboration. We have not started recording the new one nor do we have a theme in mind yet. But we hope to release the album in 2017," said Kej, who has 12 albums under his belt.

He promises that the new album "will be a heavily orchestral project and much more ambitious than 'Winds of Samsara'".

If all works out as planned, the composer, who enjoys genres that involve fusion, cultures and exotic instruments, will also get a chance to work with Hollywood filmmakers.

Asked if post his Grammy win, he was approached by any Hollywood filmmaker, he said: "Yes, two filmmakers."

He says Hollywood interests him as he loves "working on scores involving large orchestras. In terms of score, one can draw from personal experience and emotions to create beautiful melodies, which work with the film".

But that doesn't mean he has shut the doors on the Hindi film industry.

"I would definitely do a Bollywood movie if the script connected with me on an emotional level because then my music would be truly from the heart," said Kej.

He is also impressed with the rise of electronic dance music in the country.

"EDM is a great form of music. The tools to make this form of music is available cheaply and you are limited only by your imagination. I have listened to some of the EDM music created in India and I think it's excellent," said the musician, who grew up listening to rock music.
