Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami - deserves a 21-gun salute

$

Ask anyone. It’s the hardest thing to play dead. Satish Shah did it in the cult comedy Kundan Shah’s "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron". Anupam Kher, who plays dead in this week’s release, also played dead in that appalling comedy Rahul Rawail’s "Buddha Mar Gaya".

Providentially, "Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami" (ETKS) is closer to Shah rather than Rawail’s film. Its heart beats and bleeds for the innocence that independent India lost when politicians decided to get happily corrupt at the cost of the common man. Kher plays an Everyman, the role he specialised in when he came into the movies with "Saaransh". It’s heartening to see him return to his roots.

This is a well-balanced, nimbly executed wake-up call for a nation, that has for long gone into a state of stupefied slumber. Writer Rahil Qazi’s writing is authentic and amusing. Debutant director Ravindra Gautam handles the inflammatory material with care. He seems to know what we all pretend to not know. That corruption is not a beast from outerspace. It exists within all of us.

Kher’s character’s humiliation and death is a moving metaphor for the annihilation of Gandhian values. The film’s plot hinges on a son’s endeavour to fulfil his father’s dying wish. The narrative cuts to the chase without wasting much time. Except for those annoying songs that show up as speed-breakers, the film keeps moving briskly putting across its message to a nation that has lost its values with a farcical ferocity that sometimes leaves us shaken stirred and sober.

The film has some sterling performances, reined-in and yet wacked-out. Anupam Kher, of course. Dead or alive, he acts both the parts with credibly commitment to keeping the flag unfurled. Manu Rishi (last seen being impressively jingoistic in "Kya Dilli Kya Lahore") and specially the under-used under-rated Divyendu Sharma, bolster the theme’s vision of a decadent debauched politics .

Neha Dhupia as the scheming femme fatale is once again so right in her gait and attitude, you wonder why she doesn’t get more challenging roles. And to see the very talented Uttara Baokar after so long, was reason enough for me to salute the casting director.

Rajesh Sharma as a slimy wheeler dealer gets to mouth some lurid lines which could have been avoided. A high-calibre political satire of this nature doesn’t need to over-state its point.

Here is a film that shovels the dirt that we’ve accumulated in our politics and makes a mirthful statement on corruption.

It comes buried under a barrage of nondescript releases this week. But to miss this clarion call to respect decency would be doing disservice to the culture of cinema with a social conscience.

"Ekkess Toppon Ki Salaami" deserves a 21-gun salute. It has a heart and it doesn’t hesitate in letting it show.

'Jigariyaa' - splashy colourful love story

$
0
0

Shakespeare lives! It was "Hamlet" in Kashmir last week. It's "Romeo and Juliet" in Agra this week. Wow, 'Bharat Darshan' with the Bard.

Small-town love stories with their own unique colours, flavours and aromas hold a peculiar charm for us. Of late, there have been many small-town takes on "Romeo and Juliet". Anand Rai's "Raanjhaana", Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela" and Manish Tiwari's under-rated "Issaq" come to mind immediately.

"Jigariyaa", about a confectioner's (repeatedly called halwaai in the film) son's eruption of unbridled passion for a zamindar's daughter, has a sweet tender ricocheting charm of its own. The bustling Agra ambience is beautifully bridled and unleashed to bring out the urgency of a desperate irrational love. The courtship is filled with smile-a-while gusto. And as we watch, the love come done and then undone, we can't help getting involved with these two headstrong wannabe Romeo and Juliet of Agra.

"What to do with them?" is the thought I came away with. Director Raj Purohit had earlier made a completely contrasting film called "Sixteen", which was a deftly told coming-of-age story about a bunch of urban 16-year olds. Here, Purohit goes completely rustic and raw with a plot that transports the love birds to the era of Govinda in the 1980s. The ambience is very crafily insinuated into the love story. The film has some brilliant camerawork by Sriram Ganpathy who captures the 'galli and mohallah' culture with warmth and vividness.

You can almost smell the samosas frying in the roadside 'kadhai'.

The lead pair do the rest.

While newcomer Cherry possesses a certain unvarnished awkwardness that makes her Radha seem endearingly vulnerable, it is Harshvardhan, who, as the 'galli ka chichora chora' Shamu pitches in a playfully pungent performance filled with childlike mischief and yet underlined by a sexual aggression.

I liked his Romeo better than both Ranveer Singh's over-the-top and Dhanush's Romeos in earlier takes on the tragic play.

The supporting cast is well informed. Veterans Virendra Saxena and K.K. Raina play the hero and heroine's father's respectively. Not much that can go wrong here.

"Jigariyaa" has its share of flaws to reckon with. For one, it doesn't really add anything to Shakespeare. But then it doesn't take away anything substantial from the source-material either. The music too adds nothing to the romance. That's a pity. If music is the food of love, then this film definitely needed some nourishment.

On the plus side, director Purohit knows his characters's inner world and how to connect it to the bustling ambience. The lovers seem fatally clueless about the ground-reality. Luckily, the director knows his job.

"Jigariyaa" is a splashy, flamboyant, colourful and earthy take on "Romeo and Juliet". The film gives us an impressively intuitive debutant Harshvardhan who seems to know more about love in Agra than tragedy in Shakespeare.

Star-crossed love against the backdrop of the Taj Mahal played out a high octave...And yes, it works.

Deepak Tijori wins battle against housing society

$

Deepak Tijori is a relieved man. The actor has won a legal and moral battle against his housing society, which in 2012, not only complained about his conduct but also asked him to vacate his home in the Garden Estate Co-operative Society in Goregaon.

The housing society's resolution had been sent to the registrar of societies.

He and his wife Shivani were asked to vacate the house "within a month." But the couple fought against what they saw as an unreasonable and illegal matter. Now two years later, the registrar has cleared the Tijoris's’name.

A triumphant Deepak said: "I finally succeeded in getting the order from the registrar against our housing society which had defamed me. Both my wife and I are extremely relieved. We went through an ordeal to get this order from the registrar.

"We knew we were in the right. We had come to a situation where we felt that the management committee of the housing society had begun to boss us around."

He calls it a "long nightmarish battle."

Deepak was disgusted by the apathy of the other members of the society.

“All my neighbours just waited to see how my wife and I go about doing this. Nobody gave a damn about our fight. Now they are ready to avail of the benefits of my battle. I wasn’t fighting a personal battle with the society’s management. I only wanted some transparency and accountability in their dealings.

"My wife and I continued our battle in spite of the fact that members of the management committee used to look at us as trouble-making strangers. Now after the registrar’s orders, I’ve sent a letter to the society asking for bills for my maintenance money,” he said.

The registrar’s order regarding the Tijoris has far reaching ramifications.

“I met some members of our housing society. They say this order is explosive. Shivani and I never said no to paying maintenance. We only said no to paying wrongful maintenance money. Only from the day of the registration of the housing society can the occupants be charged maintenance money.

"Now after the registrar’s letter, if each of the 190 flat owners question the time frame in which they have been charged maintenance money, the management committee could well be in deep trouble. For asking them to be accountable, the management committee even threw us out of the housing society and asked us to vacate our residence.

"When I told the registrar about this, he laughed and wondered how the society can throw us out of our home. The only provision for doing so is if an occupant of a residence indulges in anti-national activities.”

Deepak says he can breathe easy now for his children.

“Not only has my name and my wife’s name been cleared because we were being maligned left, right and centre, now when we pass on our property to our offsprings, they don’t have to spend years battling the housing society.

"Our neighbours see this as a miracle order. The members committee of the housing society has a lot to answer for. After this order, it is time to set our homes in order.”

He focuses on glamorous and intricately-crafted clothes in the prat, diffusion and couture categories but now designer Raakesh Agarvwal added new chapter in his design career by launching his denim wear line at the ongoing spring summer edition of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW).

The designer was inspired to get into the denim wear line after attending a music festival.

"I went to Ozora music festival and I noticed that people there are so involved in music that some of them don't change their clothes for many days. There were lot of people in tarted and distressed denims. So this season I have launched my denim line which has been made of mill fabric. They are high end denim fabrics," Agarvwal told IANS on the sidelines of WIFW.

"My love for denim is obvious from the fact that I always wear denim. It is very close to my heart. I also wanted to launch my ready to wear line and I don't think my ready to wear line is complete without denim," he added.

The collection had lot of distressed denim followed by white distressed pieces with lot of colour on it. The designer teamed them up with free flowy tops with lot of fringing work to achieve an elegant look.

The designer said that he is already in talks with various factories for his denim range.

"I am also in talks with factories to do the licensing now and they will distribute for me," he said.

Apart from denim wear range, Agarvwal has also gone back to his initial years of his design career to revisit his collection of 2008 and 2009 and give it a feel of 2014. There were lot of chiffon gowns, free flowing dresses and jumpsuits with intricate cuts and smart detailing.

"The whole collection was little flashback for me. I have revisited my own collection from 2008 and 2009 archives. I have revisited lot of chiffon and other things in this collection as well. It was a collection that was based out of previous time but has been given a contemporary fit in 2014," Agarvwal told IANS.

According to him, the highpoint of the collection was its wearabilty.

"There were jumpsuits made of 30 meter fabric... then there were gowns of 40 meter fabric. The entire collection is so light that when a women will wear it, she will feel as if she is wearing hardly anything. The world is moving towards lightness so I am also doing the same. Also, each denim is made in 400 gm and 500 gm," he said.

The music of the show was not dramatic compared to his previous shows as Agarvwal wanted people to focus on his collection especially his denim wear range than music.

All in all, there were 24 outfits in the show.

My WIFW collection homage 'evergreen Rekha': Wendell Rodricks

Rekha is a fashion icon since the 1970s, says National award winning designer Wendell Rodricks, who paid homage to the "evergreen star" through his collection titled "Yoga Calm" at the fourth day of ongoing spring summer edition of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW).

"Rekha is dear friend. She is a sister and we share a common philosophy of Yoga, positivity and our love for the colour white. Keeping all this is mind, I dedicated the collection to her," Rodricks told IANS.

Rekha, who worked in over 150 films in her four decades of career, turned 60 recently.

Asked why she was not the part of his show, the designer added: "I would have loved if she walked the ramp, but she is shy of walking at an India Fashion Week. Rekha has been a fashion icon since the '70s and with this collection, it is my homage to an evergreen star on the start of her 60th birthday."

Presented by the union textiles ministry, the show was inspired by calm, inner peace and heathy benefits of yoga and this was made evident in the outfits that had used white in variety of shapes, cuts and forms both in menswear and womenswear.

"We have used a lot of hand-woven textiles but in a more minimalist Gandhian way. I have concentrated on a calm beauty without a single bead, sequin or pearl. It is the closest to a harmony between textile and minimalism," Rodricks told IANS.

"Every single garment was wearable, even the swimwear. I am not known to go for drama and excess. Instead, I want to give Indian women and men real clothes that are archival, wearable, comfortable and make them look slimmer, taller and make them feel beautiful," he added.

From long sleeved short, 1960s inspired trouser from Kerala, Crinkle organza stole to gauze linen shift dress with satin silk stripes, the designer remained true to his signature style by mixing Indian handlooms in modern designs.

Like always, his collection garnered appreciation from all walks of life.

Rodricks thanked the government for promoting Indian handloom by tying up with fashion week.

"It is always good when an industry gets government support. I am delighted that they chose me to endorse Indian textiles and I am grateful to both the ministry of textiles and FDCI (Fashion Design Council of India) for stepping forward and giving this opportunity to Indian fashion," he said.
