Nothing wrong with in-film branding: Madhur Bhandarkar

$

Known for churning out women-centric movies, National award winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar feels there is nothing wrong with in-film branding as long as it does not obstruct one's cinematic vision.

Bhandarkar, who drew plaudits for his films like "Chandni Bar", "Traffic Signal", "Page 3", "Corporate", "Fashion" and "Heroine", has successfully weaved in promotions for big brands in many of his ventures.

"If it's the glamour industry I am showing and if it gels very well, there is nothing wrong in it. If it's a big film, then there is nothing wrong with it and I think one should do it too if it's in the right perspective," Bhandarkar said during an interactive session on 'Women In Cinema', organised by FICCI Ladies Organization here.

Bhandarkar's 2012 release "Heroine", starring Kareena Kapoor, had showcased eight brands including cosmetic giant Lakme.

"The revenue which we got from the branding recovered half the cost of the movie. The marketing department comes and tells us about endorsements, and if I feel it doesn't hamper my cinematic liberties then there's nothing wrong with it," he said.

However, he cautioned that such endorsements should be "subtle" and "not over the top".

For the second time in six months, Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi is in trouble for allegedly punching and assaulting his neighbour, police said here Friday.

This time, Pancholi, 48, has been booked - but not arrested yet - for attacking his 55-year-old neighbour and educationist Bhargav Patel Thursday, an official of the Versova police station said.

Pancholi has been slapped with various charges following a CCTV footage of the incident provided by Patel, the complainant.

The incident happened late June 19 when an allegedly inebriated Pancholi pounced on Patel over a minor parking brawl, at their housing society in the posh Versova area of north-west Mumbai.

This is the second incident involving the duo in the past six months, according to police.

The last incident happened Jan 15. Irked by some renovation going on at Patel's home, Pancholi came with some men, and allegedly dragged and assaulted him.

Patel had lodged a written complaint, but no offence was lodged against his neighbour, known in the past to frequently lose his cool over trivial issues.

The family has been in news in recent weeks after Sooraj, son of Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, was booked by police on charges of allegedly abetting the suicide of Bollywood actress Nafisa alias Jiah Khan. He is currently in judicial custody till July 11.

Yes, she can act, but Alia Bhatt can also paint! The young actress says if she could, she would love to draw a portrait of Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan some day as she considers him a "Greek god".

Present at the inauguration of an art gallery Splassh here, Alia said: "I think I would love to paint Hrithik Roshan. He looks like a Greek god. I would love to paint him, but I don't think I would be able to as I can't do portraits."

Otherwise, she loves to pick up the paintbrush and use it creatively. The 20-year-old, in fact, made a charcoal painting and has hung it up in her room.

Alia's choice is clear when it comes to a special favourite in paintings - she loves lions.

"I am very obsessed with lions. I had once tried making one, but it turned out to be small and kind of abstract. I am not very good but I will try again to paint a lion. I have two months off, so I will paint," she said.

Alia is currently back from a schedule of "2 States" with Arjun Kapoor. The film is directed by Abhishek Varman.

She has wrapped up shooting for Imtiaz Ali's "Highway", which stars Randeep Hooda opposite her.

Actress Huma Qureshi says her family is conservative when it comes to film culture, but they are changing and accepting the ways of the industry.

"My family is very conservative, but now they have changed and accept many things. They understand the choices that we make," Huma, whose family is settled in Delhi, told IANS.

The "Gangs of Wasseypur" (GOW) actress said her parents were apprehensive about sending her and her brother Saqib Saleem of "Mere Dad Ki Maruti" fame to Mumbai.

"Now, when some negative stories come out, both of us get very nervous that mum would have read the newspaper, but when she calls up, she is absolutely normal. They understand and they never question us.

"They have been very supportive. My mum says this is part of the deal and you will have to take it with a pinch of salt and you can't let it affect you," she added.

Huma was recently in the news for her alleged linkup with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who was instrumental in launching her in Bollywood with GOW.

Commenting on this, Huma said: "I am an emotional person, but that doesn't mean everyone's opinion matters to me. There are very few people whose opinion matters to me."

"I don't want to get the best girl award. If I'd think about other people, my work will suffer. When I read some negative stories, my brother wonders when these things happened... I just tell him, let's deal with it."

Huma's brother is her best friend.

"Although he is much younger, he is far more intelligent than I am," the 26-year-old said.

"Saqib is someone very sensible and I am his bouncing board...It's great to have somebody whom you can trust. Since he is my brother, he gives me good opinions because he knows our family, where we come from. He will also think emotionally about it," she added.

After crime thriller GOW, Huma was seen in light-hearted film "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana" and supernatural thriller "Ek Thi Daayan" and is happy about not being typecast.

"I am happy that I have not been typecast because I don't want to be typecast. As actors we are scared about something new, but I am not trying to be fearful. I am trying to think what other people are not thinking. I am just doing what I want to do."

Her next is action movie "D-Day". Directed by Nikhil Advani, the film also features Rishi Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Irrfan, and Shruti Haasan.

'Ghanchakkar' - unusual domestic comedy (IANS Movie Review - Rating: ***1/2)

$
0
0

Film: "Ghanchakkar"; Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan, Rajesh Verma and Namit Das; Director: Rajkumar Gupta; Rating: ***1/2

He is a lazy lad. And she is one helluva crazy Punjaban whose kookie cooking drives her sullen husband up the nearest wall. Disgust on the dining-table camouflaged in tons of table-salt, Sanju (Emraan Hashmi, pitch-perfect in his spousal indolence) would probably have gone on tolerating his wife's appalling culinary skills matched only by her hideous fashion sense, if only he didn't decide to pull off one last heist that would make him and his inept cook of a wife rich for the rest of their life.

Take-home food, here we come!

Oh, I forgot to tell you... Hashmi plays an expert lock-picker, the kind of safe-bet who can crack safes faster than we can say 'Saif Ali Khan'. Forgetfulness comes easily in this crazily unpredictable dark comedy about an ordinary Delhi couple's life going unimaginably out-of-control when they decide to mess around with two self-styled bumbling baddies, who seem to have modelled their crime life on pirated video prints of Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino crime flicks. Really, they suck at their job.

Every character in this out-of-the-box comedy is a bit of an ineffectual self-important clown. In trying hard to be cool, they end up looking like fools. And they don't even know it!

"Ghanchakkar" is a domestic comedy that gets progressively dark and sinister. Some of the film's most riveting moments find our amnesiac hero searching for his own identity and trying to locate the trust factor in his marriage that is threatened by his lack of cogent memory. Director Rajkumar Gupta is the master of straight-faced whimsy. There are no laugh-out-loud moments in "Ghanchakkar". Its humour is the kind that hits you in hindsight.

Characters such as Parvin Dabas keep popping up for no seeming purpose. But then we begin to realise the plot's larger design is to tell us that there's no real larger design in life. Very often things happen haphazardly and inexplicably because that's the way life is.

The characters and situations in "Ghanchakkar" are neither relatable or particularly likeable. You really don't want to run into these people even for fun.

Many chunks of Gupta's storytelling seem excessively quirky capturing in languid motions, the vagaries of everyday life without whipping up an over-punctuated drama either through the background score or fancy editing patterns. Setu's camera looks at Mumbai's middleclass with affectionate disdain, not judgmental, but certainly not aloof either.

Some ongoing gags, like the Namit Das' character's phone-sex and the guy on the local train returning home with vegetables for his wife who is repeatedly intimidated by Namit Das, just don't hold together. That maybe because this is not comic cinema as we know and acknowledge it.

Gupta creates a world high on eccentricity in the uncaring city. If the truth be told, we've never seen anything like this film before. Gupta's third film is wacky, whimsical, dark, scrumptious and though not as lightly humorous as your average comedy, wonderfully innovative in the sparing use of dramatic devices, including music.

Its sinister thrusts, especially towards the end, eat ravenously into the comedy. This may not work for those who are comically regaled by the "Golmaal" series or even the wacky wit of "Fukrey". The comedy in "Ghanchakkar" is entirely reliant on the principal characters' ability to penetrate and make sense of the squalid world of greed and acquisitiveness that they seem to inhabit so casually.

The film's heist-quotient is substantially sustained and aggrandised by the crackling hissing and snarling chemistry between the bold and fearless Balan and the endearingly restrained and under-the-top Hashmi. Their mutual suspicion of one another's marital integrity is delightfully irreverent and yet disturbingly relevant in today's times when distrust is a dowry gift in a majority of marriages.

In their delightful lovemaking sequence, Gupta and his astute co-writer Parvez Shiekh turn the politics of the bedroom on its head. Hashmi appears seductively at the bedroom door wearing the nightwear that his wife has brought him... Underwears and condoms are shyly mentioned. What follows is funny and, er, unforgettable.

The incidental characters - an inquisitive neighbour, an over-friendly real-estate agent, a nosy mother/mother-in-law whom we only hear on the phone, et al, appear unannounced. But then all said and dumped, "Ghanchakkar" is nothing like anything we've encountered in the genre of dark comedy.

Depicting the scary, but savagely funny underbelly of the Great Indian Middleclass' consumerist caprices, "Ghanchakkar" gives Vidya Balan another chance after "The Dirty Picture" and "Kahaani" to create an unorthodox heroine. You may not think much of her loud attitude to life, but then you have to hand it to Vidya for staying constantly unpredictable in her characterisations. Emraan Hashmi seems to instinctively grasp his forgetful character's obstinacy and anxieties. He brings calm to the breathless proceedings.

"Ghanchakkar" may not be every moviegoer's cup of tee-hee. But this comedy of arrears, monstrous arrears, is quite simply one of the most unusual comedies in...er, living memory.

Pancham-da felt industry had discarded his talent: Big B

$

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan remembers the legendary Rahul Dev Burman, affectionately called Pancham-Da, on the occasion of his 74th birth anniversary Thursday and says "his last years were filled with sadness".

"He felt the industry had discarded his talent and was not giving him the opportunity he wanted," the 70-year-old posted on his blog Thursday night.

Pancham revolutionised Hindi film music since he debuted as a composer with comedian Mehmood's 1961 movie "Chote Nawab". He was probably the only composer who could play all the musical instruments available during that time.

Pancham's range varied from the catchy "Aaja aaja, main hun pyaar tera" from "Teesri Manzil" to the soulful thumri "Hame tumse pyar kitna, ye hum nahin jaante" by Parveen Sultana in "Kudrat". He also composed mischievous number "Ek chatur naar, badi hoshiyar" from "Padosan" and the melodious "Tere bina zindagi se koi shikwa to nahin" from "Aandhi".

Burman's last work was seen in "1942: A Love Story", which was released after his unfortunate demise in 1994.

"His last known work was in the film '1942: A Love Story', the film made by (Vidhu) Vinod Chopra starring Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala. The songs were written by Javed saheb (Javed Akhtar), and it was considered to be one of the best music tracks of RD Burman."

"He passed away suddenly, leaving behind a history of wonderful memories and his music, which shall always remain eternal," reminisced Big B.

Even so many years after Pancham's death, he rules the hearts of millions as his hits continue to rule the Hindi chartbusters.

“Pancham is the name given to a note in the music world, and because he used to sing in that high pitch, he was nicknamed Pancham. Son of the legendary Sachin Dev Burman, another music maestro of the industry, Pancham brought in the colour of modern sound and form in the industry laden till then with a bent towards the more classic,” wrote Bachchan, highlighting the late composer's USP.

Apart from his inherent talent, he was great company too, said Big B.

“Always affable, filled with humour, and having a ready story on a comic situation that he may have encountered. Spending time with him in his music room, where each evening he would sit with his musicians and compose, was a delight,” he said.

Say goodbye to monsoon hair woes

Raindrops are lovely to look at, but stepping out when it's pouring may not be the best idea for your hair. Rainwater may spoil your locks and make them look rough and greasy. But fret not!

Beauty experts Ishika Taneja and Blossom Kochchar suggest use of good serums and conditioners to keep your hair nourished and hydrated during monsoon.

Always use a hair protective styling mousse before styling your hair, says Taneja.

"It will protect your mane from excess heat from the dryers, straighteners and curling tong. One can also use an anti-humidity fine spray as it helps fix and keep your hairstyle in place for long hours. Use shine spray in the end as it provides additional sheen to your hair," she added.

Kochchar says homemade hair care remedies can be handy too. Sharing some, she said:

- Add two tablespoons of curd (or more depending on your hair length) to gram flour (besan). Add little olive oil. Apply it to your hair and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes. Wash it later.

- You can also use mixture of water and vinegar as an after-shampoo serum to help calm your hair down.

- Prepare a mixture of one banana and one tablespoon honey. Put in your hair for 15 minutes and then wash it off. It helps make hair soft and smooth.

Jackie, Anil inspire Imran's look in 'Once Upon A Time...'

Imran Khan, who plays a gangster in forthcoming underworld drama "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara", has taken inspiration from the 1980s stars Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor for his look in the film.

"I wanted to model this character on the 1980s heroes, especially the biggest ones then like Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor. They were the biggest style icons of the 1980s," the 30-year-old said here Friday while promoting the film at Radio City.

"This boy is from Dongri and obviously he will watch Hindi films and he will be inspired by his heroes. So, I have taken a lot of inspiration from Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor for styling, shoes, hairstyle and moustache. So, the whole look has been inspired by that," he added.

Right looks for characters in period dramas are important.

"When you are making a period film, it is very important to convince the audience that the film has actually been set in a particular time period. Every single detail is very important, like how collars were done and hair were styled," Imran said.

"If there is one little thing that is out, they will get pulled out of the film. They will stop believing that it is a 1980s film," he added.

Directed by Milan Luthria, "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara" also stars Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha. A sequel to Balaji Motion Picutres' 2010 hit "Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai", "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara" hits theatres Aug 15.

'Ambikapathy' - when love overgrows age (Tamil Movie Review)

$

0

Film: "Ambikapathy"; Cast: Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub and Swara Bhaskar; Director: Anand L. Rai; Rating: ***1/2

What's a love story without some fun, heartaches and reality checks? Most love stories of our times pass through these three phases, and by then, either the girl or the boy realises they're not meant to be together, and move on with their lives.

However, in some rare cases, we see a love story enter the fourth phase - when you realise that love doesn't age, but people do in a relationship.

Anand L. Rai's "Ambikapathy", the Tamil dubbed version of "Raanjhanaa", is a simple love story of a small-town boy and a girl, who in the process of figuring out the thin line between love and friendship, uncover stronger feelings for each other.

We've had oodles of love stories focusing on the communal divide between the lovers, but "Ambikapathy" is largely about the divide in the ideologies of the youth of modern India. It's the story of small town values versus urban philosophies.

What happens when a girl with city-intellect is pitted against the conventional yet archaic values of a small-town boy in the name of love? This is what precisely Rai depicts in this breezy entertainer packed with pain, laughs and little melodrama.

"Ambikapathy" scores an ace in two departments - casting and music. There would have been a third one if the second half was shorter and less melancholic. Spearheaded by Dhanush, who was irreplaceable in his role, and a brilliant supporting cast of Swara and Ayub, the film helps Sonam unleash her acting prowess.

Rahman's music, needless to say, becomes an integral part of the film's composition and helps us connect with the soul of the film.

Just like his previous film "Tanu Weds Manu", Rai's second directorial venture celebrates life in the alleys of Benaras, on the banks of the Ganga, giving us a slice-of-life of small town adventures. Some of the best moments come from the scenes between Dhanush, Ayub and Swara.

The camaraderie between them may pop up question in many as to how could two guys use a girl for their whims and fancies, but if you look at it from a small-town's point of view, it's one of the best friendship moments ever captured on screen.

You could easily write-off Rai's protagonist, who like a love-struck puppy, stalks Sonam Kapoor, but it doesn't rule out the probability that most small-town love stories are akin to what was portrayed to us. If you haven't known a friend who cut his wrist or ever attempted suicide over love, then it's unlikely that you will understand what lies beneath the layers of the emotion.

For people who attach only a love story tag to "Ambikapathy", there is so much you didn't understand in the film or could've gotten bored with because of the disengaging second half.

Love is merely used as a tool to help us understand the complexity of modern-day relationships (including father-daughter or father-son) and politics.

There are two heroes in the film - Dhanush and A.R. Rahman, and both wear the south Indian label like a medal of honour and never allow it come in between their work. With his flawless performance as a Benarasi Brahmin boy, Dhanush kicks all the south Indian cliches out of the window, while Rahman helps us connect with the film more on an emotional level.

Critically lauded filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee is joining hands with the production banner Yash Raj Films (YRF) for the first time to helm "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!", featuring Sushant Singh Rajput as the popular detective.

"We're rebooting Byomkesh. Right back to his first ever case," Dibakar, who is also co-producing the project, said in a statement.

The movie will be set in contemporary interpretation of war torn Calcutta, now known as Kolkata, during the 1940s. It will follow the first adventure of Byomkesh, fresh out of college, as he pits himself against an evil genius who is out to destroy the world.

"It's his wits against the most villainous arch criminal, in a world of murder, international political intrigue and seduction," said Dibakar, who has earlier directed movies like "Khosla Ka Ghosla", "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!" and "Shanghai".

The movie is first in a series that will feature the country's widest read and best known detective character for the first time in a Hindi feature film.

The role of the protagonist will be essayed by Sushant, who has been on a roll since his debut Bollywood film "Kai Po Che" hit the screens.

"Sushant has that dormant volcano thing about him that is just right for my Byomkesh," said Dibakar, adding how "he (Sushant) looks so quiet, so self-absorbed and withdrawn - till you challenge him".

"Then he explodes and becomes the most dangerous man in the world - at least for the criminals," he added.

The director and the lead are working hard to get the character, feel and the spectacle of the period thriller, which will go on floors January 2014.

It will be ready for release Dec 12, 2014.

After doing "Vicky Donor" and "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani", Dolly Ahluwalia is keen to play real characters on the screen as she cannot be artificial.

"As an actor I can't draw lines. I take up every project as a challenge, but the character has to be real. I enjoy doing real characters. I cannot be artificial. When I speak of being real, the script has to touch me deep inside," Ahluwalia told IANS.

After her role, she gives importance to the director and co-actors.

"Once the script is there, then the director matters and co-actors too...if I am giving the best, then the other person should be able to receive it well. It is a give and take relationship," she explained.

Her next is "Bajatey Raho". The film is directed by Shashant A. Shah and it also stars Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey, Tusshar, Vishakha Singh and Ravi Kishan and is coming out July 26.

Talking about her latest film, Dolly said: "It is a revenge comedy. It is different as it shows that we don't have to become bad to take revenge....I have to see what kind of message my role sends out," she said.

Do you have any other project in hand?

"I am going through scripts... Some are under negotiation," she said.
