Television actor Aman Verma has been part of many shows like "Teen Bahuraniyaan" and "Devi", but says "Kyunki... Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi..." and "Khullja Sim-Sim" were the game changers for him.

"The turning point for me was getting entry into 'Kyunki...', a famous show. Then I got my own show 'Khullja Sim Sim' where I was the host and that completely changed it for me," he told IANS.

"If you want to survive as an actor, I firmly believe whether it is TV or films or theatre, you need to startle people. As long as you have the ability to do that, you will survive," added the actor who made his acting debut with TV serial "Pachpan Khambe Laal Diwar".

Currently seen playing a cop in "Hum Ne Li Hai - Shapath", Aman admits he always wanted to don the khakee uniform on the screen.

"I always wanted to play a cop and I got that opportunity on the show," he said and added that the crime-based show depicts super natural elements that attract children.

"The kind of scenes (involving) super humans, super villain and supernatural has clicked with the people. The channel is trying to make it children-centric. A lot of children want to see Indian heroes. This got them interested," he said.

"Shapath" comes on Life Ok and the channel also motivated him to be part of the show.

"I know people at Life OK and I am close to them. This is a show where they are trying something different. If you see the kind of shows Life Ok brings, they try to break away from the traditional shows. I wanted to be part of the channel," he said.

His acting is appreciated in the movie, said the actor, who is in talks for some films as well.

Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli's mega-budget Telugu-Tamil bilingual period-drama "Baahubali", which has been in pre-production phase for nearly a year now, is set to go on floors here July 6.

A lot of time was spent training the film's lead cast, which features Anushka Shetty, Prabhas and Rana Daggubati, in sword-fighting and horse riding over the past few months.

"After almost one year of extensive pre-production and planning, (I'm) pleased and excited to announce the start of shooting of 'Baahubali' from July 6," the film's producer Shobu Yarlagadda posted on his Twitter page.

This will be Rajamouli's first full-length digital film.

"I shot very few shots with digital cameras in 'Eega' (and, therefore) 'Baahubali' will be my first fully digitally shot film," posted Rajamouli on Twitter.

Even though the film will be shot in Telugu and Tamil, it will be released in Hindi, Malayalam and a few foreign languages too.

Rajamouli also clarified that the film is not being made in IMAX.

"(I'm hearing) lots of rumours regarding 'Baahubali' being shot on IMAX cameras. No, we are not! We are using Arri Alexa XT," he added.

The reasons for not using IMAX camera is cost and shortage of equipment.

"(IMAX cameras) are very expensive. There are only six IMAX cameras that are manufactured and heavy competition for their booking," said Rajamouli.

The film is also being produced by Prasad Devineni and K. Raghavendra Rao, while M.M. Keeravani will compose the music.

The film should speak for itself: Girish Kumar

Girish Kumar, set to make his debut on Bollywood boulevard with "Ramaiya Vastavaiya", says nothing is more important than the viewers' reaction.

"I believe that ultimately the film should speak for itself," he said adding that it applies to everyone - "be it a producer or a star or newcomer."

Son of producer Kumar Taurani, Girish wanted to become an actor "right from my mother's womb. Every day has been a step towards it."

For the opening scene of Prabhudheva-directed "Ramaiya Vastavaiya", the newcomer had to trim down, which was tough.

"Losing weight was a tough task. I tend to put on weight quickly. My introduction scene was a surfing sequence and I had to be in good shape for that. I got professional help and I started working out and eating clean," Girish told IANS.

"Ramaiya Vastavaiya", a remake of Prabhudheva's "Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana", which also features Shruti Haasan, is a romantic film with a good dose of family drama.

Not willing to stick to one genre, he said: "I want to do good scripts with good makers. There is no particular genre I am looking for specifically... talks are on for future projects. All I can say is that I want to entertain audiences and make wholesome films."

"Ramaiya Vastavaiya" is slated for a July 19 release.

Audiences are invited to participate in "Comedy Nights With Kapil" and comedian Kapil Sharma says that is the USP of his maiden production venture.

"My show has audience participation. This is my show's USP. I have also brought in theatre in the show. There is drama before interval, then interaction with public," Kapil told IANS.

He invites celebrities on his show that went on air recently and saw high profile guests like Dharmendra, Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi chatting with the viewers.

"I make celebrities talk to people. This is not scripted and it is fun. India has never seen such a show," he claimed.

"I feel that people like seeing celebrities and comedy is something that they like as lives have become stressful... My show also has a live element, which is different. I have experience in comedy and I feel the show has elements that has not been seen before," he added.

But having said that, Kapil makes sure comedy is the mainstay in all the new elements.

"I make sure not to stray away from comedy. The live interaction also has a lot of comedy," he said.

After having participated in shows like "The Great Indian Laughter Challenge" and many seasons of "Comedy Circus", Kapil wanted to make his own format.

"I wanted to make my own format where everything happens according to my wish. No one knows you better than yourself. People had only seen things that I had shown them in others' format. I wanted to do something different than comedy with comedy. I researched a lot," he said.

'Satyagraha' not based on Anna Hazare: Prakash Jha

Bollywood director Prakash Jha, who is set to release his film "Satyagraha", says that it has nothing to do with social activist Anna Hazare's movement.
Contrary to what the reports have suggested, the director revealed that Amitabh Bachchan's character has no link to Anna Hazare.

"I have not commented on this before. The film is not based on Anna Hazare and has nothing to do with the movement. The entire process of satyagraha comes from Gandhiji. Mr. Bachchan plays the role of a satyagrahi who believes in truth," he said at the global launch of the trailer held here Wednesday.

Talking about the experience of working with Bachchan, the director said that he is fortunate to be able to work with the veteran actor.

"It is very fortunate for us that someone from our generation gets to work with Mr. Bachchan," he said.

The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpai and Arjun Rampal.

Talking about the concept of of a global launch, Ajay Devgn said that since the promo was nice, they wanted to do something big. Prakash Jha along with Amrita Rao, Manoj Bajpai, Amitabh Bachchan and Sidharth Roy Kapur were present here while Kareena Kapoor and Ajay Devgn were present via video chat from London.

"It was a great idea. I was here and so was Kareena. The idea came when we were dubbing for the promo. We liked it so much that we felt that we should launch it in a big way," Ajay said.

Most of Jha's films like "Arakshan" and "Gangajal" revolve around controversial subjects and the director said this is what triggers protests, but they all stop once the film is released.

"When you make a film on a social subject, everyone has different perspectives. So protests are natural. But when the film releases, it becomes better," Jha said.

Madhoo is returning to Tamil industry after 16-year hiatus with a movie directed by actor-filmmaker Lakshmu Ramakrishnan.

"I want to be part of more women directors' films. I would love to work in a film like 'Phir Milenge'. It's one of those films where Revathi (director) added a female's perspective to an issue and presented it with sensibility," Madhoo told IANS.

I want to make a simple love story with music: Bhandarkar

Keen to foray into the romantic genre, National Award-winning director Madhur Bhandarkar Thursday revealed that he is thinking about making a "realistic and romantic" musical.

"Definitely there is a musical, which is under consideration... it will be romantic and realistic. There is no confirmation yet... it is in the pipeline," Bhandarkar told reporters on the sidelines of an interactive session on "Women In Cinema" organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry's (FICCI) Ladies Organisation.

Bhandarkar, who drew plaudits for his films like "Chandni Bar", "Satta", "Page 3" and "Fashion", said it would be a personal challenge to make a love story.

"I want to make a simple love story with music. It is a genre I haven't ventured into. I thought it would be challenging for me to make a romantic movie. In fact, I am also a romantic person," said Bhandarkar.

Having made "Heroin - Zindagi Ke Panno Se" for the TV series "Specials@10", the ace lensman is open to the idea of directing for the small screen.

"If I have a good subject with a concept, then definitely I would love to be a creative director on TV. Now, I will start two movies, so I will be busy with my script. But if something excites me, then definitely I will make it," said Bhandarkar.

Credited with bringing out the best in the leading ladies of his films, critically acclaimed director Madhur Bhandarkar Thursday confessed to connecting emotionally with Tabu, who played the female lead in his film "Chandni Bar".

"For me, every actress that I have worked with were great. Tabu was one who was amazingly talented. There is an emotional connect with Tabu," Bhandarkar said during an interactive session on "Women In Cinema" organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry's (FICCI) Ladies Organisation.

Tabu had essayed the role of a bar girl in "Chandni Bar" (2001) that bagged four National Film awards, including the best trophy for the actress.

"I visited 60 bars to make the film and I gathered enough materials to make two movies on 'Chandni Bar'. I was very happy that Tabu loved the script and she worked with me," said the director known for making films like "Page 3", "Corporate", "Satta", and "Fashion".

"Why should I shy away from showing the brutality? I have stuck to my convictions and made the films I want to make," said the filmmaker.

However, he refuted rumours of sequels to "Chandni Bar" and "Fashion" saying: "I don't want to make 'Chandni Bar 2'. I didn't think 'Fashion 2' will happen. If a film ends on a high note... makes the audience think and lingers in the end... that is needed."

Film music thwarting growth of indie musicians

0
0

Gone are the days when independent musicians or bands were on centrestage and music lovers revelled in songs like "Mai ri" and "Sayonee". Now, "manipulated" Bollywood hit numbers not only whet the appetite of listeners but also overshadow non-film music and budget constraint makes survival tougher, musicians say.

The 1990s were ripe for music bands and independent musicians. The era saw the emergence of bands like Euphoria, Silk Route, Aryan, Junoon and Stereo Nation which carved a niche for themselves.

During the same period, pop singers like Alisha Chinnoy, Falguni Pathak, Lucky Ali, Bali Brahmbhatt, Shaan, Daler Mehdi, Adnan Sami, Mika and Baba Sehgal rose on the music firmament and earned name and fame.

But now, Bollywood has become the mainstay for Indian music and Aditya Dutt from Dravaka, a Delhi-based band, pleads that they "just want to be heard".

"We want people to hear our music. We want our music to touch hearts and change lives. We want to carve out our style of music in the world," he told IANS.

Agreeing with him, independent musician Rajnigandha Shekhawat said those of his ilk have to work much harder than Bollywood singers.

"Independent musicians have to try at least 50 times harder than mainstream Bollywood singers to make even a slight dent in the market. There are two reasons - first, the budget, and second the content," she said.

A FICCI KPMG report says the Rs.10.6 billion music industry is expected to reach over Rs.20 billion by 2017 and that live music performances have come into their own - but it's still a long way to go for non-film music.

Hefty promotional budgets make it easier for filmmakers to hammer their songs into the minds of listeners by beaming them again and again on TV channels, but independent musicians don't have that luxury and hence languish.

"A song, when played on a TV channel three times every hour, eight hours a day, for fours weeks in a row, is bound to become a hit as people hear it that many times. It becomes a manipulated hit as the producer backs the TV airplay with huge budgets," Shekhawat pointed out.

"An independent artist is barely able to get together a band or an arranger to string together a good piece of music, and usually doesn't have a budget of Rs.25 lakh a week for music channels to support his or her music," she added.

Most of the independent bands are working professionals and their passion is their only guiding force.

"While we are working professionals, music has always been our passion... and when you love something that much, you make time for it," said Ajinkya Patale, composer-lyricist with Nashik band Veda.

Shekhawat felt that Bollywood lures talent from the independent space.

"Because Bollywood is investing so heavily in promotions, it invariably picks out the best content from musicians, independent or otherwise. Independent musicians are the basic talent pool that the mainstream eventually picks up people from; so if one is good in one's area of work, sooner or later the big call is bound to happen," she said.

Not unture! Shaan and Daler Mehdi are now more active as playback singers.

While struggling for their survival, these musicians see a ray of hope in MTV Coke Studio, a television show that provides a platform to be heard and showcases talents.

"Coke Studio gives a platform to musicians young and old. For an amateur band like us it is a platform to be heard, an opportunity to bring our music to the masses," Aditya said.

LeapFROG to Coke Studio@MTV, a collaboration between Coke, MTV and blueFROG, too focusses on discovering new musical talent.

"With the initiative, music-loving audiences can watch and motivate their favourite bands. The winners of this initiative will go on to perform in a multi-producer episode of Coke Studio@ MTVSeason 3 and will get to work with some established artists in the industry," said Wasim Basir, director, Integrated Marketing Communications, Coca-Cola India.

Dhanush vs Dhanush clash averted

0
0

It was going to be a clash of two of Dhanush's films Friday - "Ambikapathy", the Tamil version "Raanjhanaa", was to compete with Dhanush's brand new original Tamil film "Maryan". But the clash got averted at the eleventh hour.

This was the first time that there would have been three releases featuring Dhanush, within two weeks, with two of his Tamil films vying for eyeballs during the same Friday.

Dhanush, a very meticulous career planner, was not pleased. But the release of "Maryan" was postponed at the last minute.

Confirming the development, Dhanush said: "Only the dubbed Tamil version of 'Raanjhanaa' is releasing this Friday. It's god's will, I guess."

"Maryan" is a thriller directed by Bharatbala, and Dhanush plays a man on a journey of self-discovery in it.

According to sources, every effort was made to avert the clash at the Tamil Nadu box office.

"If you look at the history of the Tamil Nadu box office, no Tamil superstar - from M.G. Ramachandran to Shivaji Ganesan to Kamal Haasan to Rajinikanth to Suriya to Vikram to Dhanush, has ever released two of his films during the same Friday or even close to one another.

"Dhanush tried his best to space his two Tamil releases out by at least a week. He would have preferred if 'Ambikapathy' came a week earlier on the same Friday as 'Raanjhanaa'. But Eros, the producers of 'Raanjhanaa' did not want the Hindi and Tamil versions of their film to come on the same Friday," said a source.
