T Series issues a statement clarifying the royalty issue posed by Abhay Deol

In reply to the media reports on One By Two music T-Series clarified their stand by issuing an official statement.

After reading media stories on the music release of the film “One By Two” we are compelled to issue this press release to clear the erroneous understanding and misconceptions being seeded in the media.

Viacom 18 represented to us that they own all the rights for the said film including its music rights free of any encumbrances. and based on their representation, warranties and indemnities, We acquired the said music rights from Viacom 18 solely based on their express representations with a clear understanding that they will share the link agreements with authors and composers to complete the chain of title. Viacom 18 has assigned these rights to us and have further indemnified us against any claims or losses and thus the onus of providing a clear chain of title lies with Viacom 18. We fail to understand why we are being brought into this mess between the Right holder (Viacom 18) and the Producer (Mr. Abhay Deol).

None of our agreements are against the law (as is being painted in the media) and in-fact have been adopted by us after exercising due diligence and obtaining expert legal advice and are perfectly in accordance with the provisions of the Copyright Act, 1957 and the same cannot be said to be illegal in any manner whatsoever.

T-Series as a label respects and has always respected the rights of authors, composers and performers and has been regularly entering into agreements which are in consonance with the applicable provisions of the Copyright Act, 1957. T-Series works, on a continuing basis, with most producers in the industry and in turn we expect that they would enter into agreements that are, on one hand, in compliance with applicable law, and which also safeguard our mutual interests. We spend a considerable amount of our resources on acquisition of music as well as promotion of the music and the film and bear the entire risk of the commercial viability of the music which we acquire. We are disappointed that baseless allegations are being made against us in an arbitrary manner completely disregarding our legitimate and lawful concerns as a music label.

We are well within our rights to call upon producers to provide us with appropriate agreements with composers, lyricists and singers as we cannot acquire any rights from a person who has none to begin with. In the absence thereof, we cannot be expected to release music when there is no clarity with respect to the rights granted to the producer. Any person who expects a label to acquire rights without ascertaining the validity of such rights is clearly not a person who has any understanding of the industry or the legal provisions governing assignments of rights in music.

We have to always ensure that the rights that we are acquiring from the producer would enable us to exercise our rights as a music label and further enable us to provide the public at large with music. It is an undisputable fact that once we have acquired the rights from a producer, the only entity which is at risk is us. We are not willing to get bowed down by undue pressure and release music with fragmented / encumbered rights and infringe any rights of third parties in the process.

It is pertinent to note here that we have yet not received the chain of agreements from Viacom 18, however considering our longstanding relationship with the studio, we have gone ahead and invested considerable amount on the promotion of the music album on various media platforms and 3 songs from the film “One By Two” are already live on our official YouTube Channel. One should appreciate that the risk here is entirely ours and we are the ones who are losing out on the revenue opportunity. Our decision to hold back the release is primarily to safeguard the interest of Viacom 18 from any unscrupulous claims and infringement proceedings.

Prosenjit: If Bangladesh opens its market, Bengali cinema can prosper

Bengali cinema superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee, whose latest film "Jaatishwar" will get a countrywide release Friday, says Bengali films can prosper if Bangladesh opens its market for them.

The 51-year-old, who has featured in over 300 films, including “Chokher Bali” and “Dosar”, considers Bangladesh a good market to sell Bengali films made in India.

“But there are political and social commitments. And due to piracy of our films there we are not able to do good business. If that market opens up we won't be less than Southern film industry," Prosenjit said here at the screening of "Jaatishwar".

Another factor that impacts the business of Bengali cinema is screening of other language films in the state.

"We never got the opportunity to do only Bengali cinema in our state,” he added.

“In South India, they don't entertain Hindi films, the way it should be. They have only Telugu, Tamil and Malayali films. Hindi films are not big there," added the star who feels Bengali cinema has survived so far only on content.

Bengali film 'Jaatishwar' screened in the capital

Bengali cinema superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee's "Jaatishwar" was screened in the capital Wednesday and he says that the language won't be a barrier for moviegoers.

To be released by Reliance Entertainment, the Srijit Mukerji directed film would hit theatres in Mumbai, Guwahati, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai Friday.

There will be sub-titles for non-Bengalis and Prosenjit believes the subject is such that it will get a good response.

"The movie deals with an international subject,” said the 51-year-old at the screening of the film here.

“It's about a Portugal man, who wants to marry a widow and his journey of learning Bengali language. And I don't think language is a barrier. We are ready for Chinese films, so why not Bengali?" added the star of films like “Chokher Bali”, “Dosar”, “Moner Manush” and “Autograph”.

In the 1990s, he tried his luck in Hindi films with "Aandhiyan" and "Meet Mere Mann Ke” but they turned out to be damp squibs.

Recently he featured in Dibakar Banerjee's "Shanghai" which won him the Stardust Award for best supporting actor.

"I was away from Hindi cinema because I didn't want to do it. It took me three to four months to say yes to 'Shanghai'. I wasn't sure why Dibakar wanted me. Later, I understood that I was required in the film," said Prosenjit.

He will also be seen in Hindi films like "Traffic" and "Bandook Baaj".

"I was also supposed to play villain in 'Madras Cafe' but that didn't work out. Shoojit Sircar (filmmaker) is working on a script for me," said the actor.

Showcasing India's rich film heritage over the past 100 years, the National Museum of India Cinema (NMIC) will open in Mumbai next month, Information & Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari has said.

Situated over a 6,000 square feet area in Gulshan Mahal, a heritage building on posh Pedder Road in south Mumbai, it will house an interactive walkthrough down memory lane of India cinema, now considered the biggest in the world.

"As Indian cinema enters a new century, the NMIC will be a small tribute of the ministry to the great film heritage of the country. We have also launched a Rs.6 billion National Film Heritage Mission to digitize the best of Indian cinematic works and archive them for the benefit of future generations," Tewari said at the Life OK Screen Awards in Mumbai late Tuesday.

The NMIC will be part of a larger complex of 50,000 sq.feet that will come up at the same premises in phases, the minister added.

He said it would serve as a 'ready-reckoner' of Indian cinema history showcasing technological aspects of production and screening of films as well as the social aspects during the past 100 years of its existence.

"Through interactive galleries, it will trace the evolution of celluloid from the Lumiere Brothers, Raja Harishchandra onwards, and showcase Indian cinema in three stages: the silent era, golden era and modern era," Tewari explained.

It will portray the footsteps of Indian cinema right from the silent films to the studio period, then recreate the times when stars and mega-stars dominated the silver screen.

Visitors to the NMIC can also watch clips of old classics on several monitors, listen to rare film music from the past, view the poster collection of landmark movies. A section on regional cinema will also be there.

The NMIC has got donations of equipment from famous yesteryears studios like Mehboob Studios, RK Studios and Prasad Studios besides private collectors.

The Films Division, set up in 1941 to produce short films to disseminate information during war time, has also given its old Eymo and Mitchel cameras and recording equipment. There are exhibits of even older instruments that created an illusion of movement, which were the precursor to the movie camera.

An advisory committee headed by filmmaker Shyam Benegal guided the Films Division in establishing the NMIC and it will be curated by the National Council of Science Museums, Kolkata, under the ministry of culture that managed 55 different kinds of museums in India.

It was a rare moment for Bollywood buffs and industry insiders - veteran actors Rekha and Jaya Bachchan were caught greeting each other warmly at an awards function where megastar Amitabh Bachchan was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.

At the Life OK Screen Awards held here Tuesday, Rekha was seated and enjoying the show when the Bachchan trio of Amitabh, Jaya and Abhishek came in midway through the event.

While Abhishek was busy giving out media bytes on the red carpet to the electronic media, Jaya walked in whereas Amitabh was talking to a guest.

Jaya came forward and saw Rekha but instead of walking away or avoiding her the duo exchanged a warm smile, said a source.

Rekha got up and greeted Jaya who also clasped the former's hand amicably.

Both the screen icons looked resplendent in gorgeous pink saris and sparkling jewels at the event held at the MMRDA grounds here.

At one time "Big B" and Rekha shared a roaring chemistry on and off the screen. Their last Bollywood project together was Yash Chopra's 1981 entertainer "Silsila" which also starred Jaya.

But since then, the duo who acted in films like "Namak Haraam", "Do Anjaane", "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar", "Mr. Natwarlal", "Suhaag" and "Khoon Pasina", have not worked together.

At the 20th edition of the Screen Awards, Amitabh was recognised for his over four decades of contribution to the world of Hindi cinema.

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra and actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha handed over the special award to the 71-year-old.

A staggering 100,000 people are expected to sing the patriotic song "Ae Mere Vatan Ke Logon" here to mark the end of its golden jubilee celebrations Jan 27, an organiser said Thursday.

The function, to be held at Mumbai's Mahalaxmi Race Course, has been organised by Shahid Gaurav Samiti (SGS) in which Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar -- who first rendered it Jan 27, 1963 to remember the heroes of the 1962 India-China war -- will be present.

"Over a lakh people will sing the song in presence of Lata Mangeshkar and she may also join them. She will be felicitated by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi along with other war heroes and their families," SGS spokesperson Vaibhav Lodha said here.

He added that over 100 Param Vir Chakra, Mahaveer Chakra and other gallantry awardees, families of martyrs and other dignitaries shall be present and felicitated.

"The golden jubilee of this patriotic song was celebrated (for) the ethos of nationalism and patriotism among Indians and to inspire future generations," said SGS convenor and Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Mumbai, Mangal Prabhat Lodha.

"Ae Mere Vatan Ke Logon", penned by the late Kavi Pradeep, was first sung by Lata Mangeshkar Jan 27, 1963 after the 1962 war, at a function in Delhi where India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and other dignitaries were present.

SGS also has declared Jan 27 as 'Shreshtha Bharat Divas' in memory of the martyrs who lost their lives defending the country's borders during various wars, the spokesperson said.

The event will see the presence of soldiers and officers from the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy besides common citizens.

Singers like Kailash Kher, Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan and composers such as Vishal Dadlani and Ehsaan Noorani have hailed Abhay Deols courageous outburst against music label T-Series for holding up the music release of his forthcoming film "One By Two".

The actor-producer, who recently turned up with a black eye at a recent award ceremony held here, openly stated that T-Series has stalled the release of the music of his film "One By Two" as the music company wants him to get composer Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to sign a clause first.

Several Indian musicians have lent their support to Abhay's effort in supporting the popular trio, who have composed the "One By Two" album.

Following Abhay's remonstration at the Life OK Screen Awards, celebrities took to Twitter to share their sentiments on the issue:

Rahman sings 'Maahi ve' for 'Highway'

A.R. Rahman, who is behind the soundtrack of Imtiaz Ali's "Highway", has also sung a song titled "Maahi ve" for it. The filmmaker says he is surprised by how the Oscar winning composer manages to get a pulse of a movie's soul so well.

"'Maahi ve' is coming more from Rahman sir than from Irshad or me. This is one of the songs that Rahman sir makes and one wonders how does he get the soul of the the story so beautifully," Ali said in a statement.

Written by Irshad Kamil, the soft romantic number "Maahi ve" is picturised on Veera, played by Alia Bhatt, and Mahabir, essayed by Randeep Hooda - two strangers who come close to each other because of the circumstances.

"'Maahi ve' was not a part of the original brief, but I cannot imagine the film or the album of 'Highway' without it," added Ali.

"Maahi ve" is the second song to be launched from the "Highway" album after "Patakha guddi", which signifies the free spirit of a girl.

"Highway", produced by Window Seat Films and presented by Sajid Nadiadwala, will be released worldwide by UTV Motion Pictures Feb 21.

Bollywood changing, curvy actresses are in

$
0
0

Curvy actresses are in vogue. The likes of Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi are the antithesis of the anorexic look, the so-called size-zero, once a fad in filmdom. The game changers have, by the sheer craft of their acting, managed to turn any perceived disadvantages of their figures into cinematic assets.

The list also includes successful names like Vidya Balan and Parineeti Chopra, who happily flaunt their curvaceousness and rule the roost.

Here's a list of successful voluptuous B-Town actresses:

Sonakshi Sinha: She weighed over 90 kg before she joined the film industry and shed 30 kg for her debut movie "Dabangg" with Salman Khan. Even after weight loss, she is not size zero. She has more or less maintained the same size and the broad framed girl is moving upwards on the success ladder, thanks to her acting skills. Unperturbed by the comments about her weight, the 26-year-old feels her films' success is enough to stop the wagging tongues.

Post her debut,; she won appreciation for "Rowdy Rathore" and "Dabangg 2". In 2013, she had four releases and she is not even close to stopping. Her next will be Prabhudheva's "Action Jackson", which also stars Ajay Devgn, Kunaal Roy Kapur and Yami Gautam.

Vidya Balan: When frequently asked about her weight, Vidya once wondered if it had become a national issue! But not taking note of what others have to say about her body, the actress carries herself with confidence and has a swelling fan following, thanks to her talent. Versatility is her forte and her acting prowess never goes unnoticed. In fact, she liberally flaunted her curves in the 2011 "The Dirty Picture" and the film fetched her a National Award for best actress for playing sex siren Silk Smitha.

She will soon be seen opposite Farhan Akhtar in "Shaadi Ke Side Effects". "Bobby Jasoos" is another project that's keeping her busy at the moment.

Huma Qureshi: Daughter of restaurateur Saleem Qureshi, Huma is a self-proclaimed foodie. She is not interested in losing weight, but believes in staying fit. She also feels that her weight shouldn't be a roadblock in her Bollywood career. Quite true! After her impressive debut in "Gangs of Wasseypur", she is moving up on the success ladder. Pretty and talented, Huma recently won appreciation for her work in "Dedh Ishqiya".

Parineeti Chopra: Often tagged as "bubbly" and "livewire", the cousin of small-framed star Priyanka Chopra is far from being skinny. If she carries her role with ease, the "Ishaqzaade" star flaunts everything - from lehenga to off-shouldered outfit to peplum dress to a simple tee with jeans - with élan. She too is focussed on her acting abilities as well as her looks. Parineeti may no longer be the chubby girl of "Ladies vs Ricky Bahl", but she is far from being scrawny. In her forthcoming film "Hasee Toh Phasee", you can still spot the curves.

Sunny Leone: The Indo-Canadian adult movie star-turned actress, who made her Hindi movie debut with "Jism 2" in 2012, has been accepted with her curvy figure. She also topped the imagery downloads category in an annual survey. Sunny has proved that to don something as comfortable as summer-friendly dresses or minimal like bikini, you don't need to reduce to size zero. She is gradually making her name in the Hindi film industry. If she focussed on her acting skills in "Jackpot", with "Ragini MMS", she wants to spook the audiences.

T-Series disappointed with 'baseless allegations'

Seeking to clear erroneous understanding and misconceptions surrounding the music release of Abhay Deol’s debut production venture “One By Two”, T-Series Thursday contended that none of our agreements is against the law.

Abhay, who is co-producing the movie with Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, made a public outcry about the delay in the marketing and music launch of "One By Two", blaming T-Series for it.

"My music has not yet been released because the music company wants me to get the composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to sign a clause which is illegal," Abhay had said at the red carpet of a recently held awards event, where he arrived with a made-up black eye.

Seeking to clarify its position on the issue, T-Series Thursday came out with an official statement carrying its version.

"We fail to understand why we are being brought into this mess between the right holder (Viacom 18) and the producer (Abhay Deol)," read the statement from the music label.

"Viacom 18 represented to us that they own all the rights for the said film including its music rights free of any encumbrances and based on their representation, warranties and indemnities, we acquired the said music rights from Viacom 18 solely based on their express representations with a clear understanding that they will share the link agreements with authors and composers to complete the chain of title," the statement further said.

T-Series said that it spends a "considerable amount of our resources on acquisition of music as well as promotion of the music and the film and bear the entire risk of the commercial viability of the music which we acquire".

"We are disappointed that baseless allegations are being made against us in an arbitrary manner completely disregarding our legitimate and lawful concerns as a music label. We are well within our rights to call upon producers to provide us with appropriate agreements with composers, lyricists and singers as we cannot acquire any rights from a person who has none to begin with.

"In the absence thereof, we cannot be expected to release music when there is no clarity with respect to the rights granted to the producer."

The statement also stated: "It is pertinent to note here that we have yet not received the chain of agreements from Viacom 18. However, considering our longstanding relationship with the studio, we have gone ahead and invested considerable amount on the promotion of the music album on various media platforms ... Our decision to hold back the release is primarily to safeguard the interest of Viacom 18 from any unscrupulous claims and infringement proceedings."

Three songs from "One By Two" are already live on its official YouTube Channel, T-Series said.
