'Gulaab Gang' was my last chance to work with Madhuri: Juhi

$

ctress Juhi Chawla, who will be seen with Madhuri Dixit for the first time in "Gulaab Gang", says she doesn't think they will get another chance to work together in future.

Madhuri and Juhi were contemporaries in the 1990s but they never worked together during their prime.

"I think this ('Gulaab Gang') was the last chance I got to work with her (Madhuri Dixit) and I don't think we will again get a chance to work together in future," Juhi told reporters Monday at the screening of Bengali movie "Jatishwar" here.

"Gulaab Gang" has a very strong script and Juhi feels that such stories are not churned out in bulk, therefore, she isn't so hopeful of seeing her and Madhuri on the big screen together again.

"It happens once in a lifetime when we get such a good script and where we can work together with such dedication. So, I don't imagine that we will again be working (together). That's why the film is exciting for us as actors," said Juhi.

Juhi recalls the time when she missed the opportunity to work with Madhuri because of rivalry.

"There were times when I had a chance to work with Madhuri, but at that time we were rivals and I was like, 'I will not work with Madhuri at all'," Juhi spoke candidly.

"Now I agreed to do the film ('Gulaab Gang') as I felt it would be an amazing cast with such an awesome script," she added.

"Gulaab Gang", co-written by director Soumik Sen and producer Anubhav Sinha, is inspired by a group of women activists in the Bundelkhand region and talks about women empowerment.

It features Juhi and Madhuri in completely opposite roles. While Madhuri stands for justice, Juhi stands for political power as she plays a stubborn politician.

"Gulaab Gang" is slated to release March 7, a day before International Women's Day.

Juhi is eager to talk about the movie.

"I am waiting for the promotions to start. I will be happy to talk about the film. It was a unique experience while working in the film. I enjoyed it," she said.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is upset with stories about his link up with actress Huma Qureshi, who debuted with his film "Gangs of Wasseypur".

Kashyap, who has separated from his wife Kalki Koechlin whom he had launched in his film "Dev D", recently attended a screening with Huma.

"People run only one sided story and it's very disturbing. Such rumours are not affecting me or Kalki but it is affecting Huma's image. Huma is being targeted," Kashyap told IANS.

"When we went for the screening, photographers wanted to click us together. I said you guys will click our picture purposely and will run your own story and that's exactly what has happened," he added.

The filmmaker says this is one of the reasons he maintains a distance from the media.

He said: "I have always maintained distance from media because I read so many fake stories about me. After reading so many stories, even we stopped meeting. I am even going to get out of Twitter."

'Albela' producers file complaint against director

$

Kimaya Motion Pictures, which is making a biopic on late actor-director Bhagwan Dada, has filed a case against director Niranjan Patwardhan for cheating, fraud, breach of contract and theft.

The production house alleges that Patwardhan cheated them by taking illegal possession of screenplay of "Albela" - based on the actor, whose real name was Bhagwan Abaji Palav, with dialogues, research material and important hard disks from the producers' office.

The FIR was registered at Bhoiwada Police Station on Jan 12 after Patwardhan failed to respond to three letters sent by the production house regarding "Albela".

“Albela”, to be produced by Kimaya Motion Pictures and directed by Patwardhan, was meant to be released in August 2013, but the film’s shooting never took off.

“We finally decided to start the shooting from September and then release in December 2013. He kept pushing the date, so we held a meeting at end of October and asked for the screenplay. He refused to do so saying that it is his screenplay and can’t share with us. This wasn’t acceptable to us as he had transferred rights to us,” Kunal Shetye, director, Kimaya Motion Pictures, told IANS.

A day after the meeting, a letter from Kimaya Motion Pictures was sent to Patwardhan asking him to submit the screenplay.

“We gave him two options. He could either give us the screenplay or buy it from us. We gave him option to make another biopic on Bhagwan Dada, but he had to give us credit and give our money back. We asked him to reply within seven days, but he didn’t,” said Shetye.

On not hearing from Patwardhan, they sent him termination letter in November. This was also ignored by the director. Even the film’s dialogue writer Nandan Singh tried to connect with Patwardhan, but in vain.

“On Dec 3, we read an article which mentioned that he was making another biopic on Bhagwan Dada by the name of ‘Ek Tha Albela’ with another producer. We sent him another notice. He didn’t reply so we approached police on Jan 3. They collected evidence and then FIR was filed on Jan 12,” said Shetye.

A team of police lead by investigating officer Kailash Chavan seized few of the film materials from Patwardhan’s house.

“We went to his residence on Monday and seized his laptop which had material related to the film. We didn’t arrest him as we need to further investigate the case and collect evidence against him,” said Chavan.

Contacted by IANS, Patwardhan said: “I can’t speak on this as it is sub judice matter. I am the victim here. I will go by the law and meet them in the court, if required.”

He did though mention that “Ek Tha Albela” shooting will soon start with Marathi actor Atul Todunkar playing the lead, and is directed and produced by him.

“The screenplay is also mine. It has nothing to with the other project that I was working on earlier. The idea and concept are different,” said Patwardhan.

Shetye disagrees with him and said: “We spent around Rs.25 lakh on this. All the research work was funded by us. An amount of Rs.8,25,000 was transferred to his account. The biopic that he is making has same content like ours. Right now, what we want is he shouldn’t be able to make a biopic on Bhagwan Dada and we want to recover our losses.”

'Jai Ho' music has its ups and downs (IANS Music Review)

Film: "Jai Ho"; Composers: Sajid-Wajid, Amal Malik and Devi Sri Prasad; Singers: Wajid, Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal, Shabab Sabri, Himesh Reshammiya, Keerthi Sagathia, Palak Muchhal, Altamash Faridi, Armaan Malik, Bhaven Dhanak, Brijesh Shandilya, Ujjayinee and Amal Malik; Rating **

Salman Khan-starrer "Jai Ho" is an action-drama directed by Sohail Khan. It is said to be the biggest opener of 2014. Only time will tell if the viewers hail the movie or not.

The album has nine tracks, including two remixes, but the composers' efforts are nothing to write home about.

The album starts with "Baki sab first class hai", sung by Wajid. The song is good and relatable, but it's more like a speech given during a rally - the only difference is that it has music.

Next is "Tere naina maar hi daalenge". It reminds one of "Dagabaaz re" and "Tere mast mast do nain" songs. There is obviously nothing wrong in it, but why the obsession with "naina"? Nevertheless Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal and Shabab Sabri have done a great job and the composers too create an effect by using tabla.

"Photocopy," sung by Himesh Reshammiya, Keerthi Sagathia and Palak Muchhal, is the third song. Reshammiya's voice has once again created its magic in the song. It is a good dance number and will be a hit during the Navratri season.

"Tumko to aana hi tha" is a slow number. Crooned by Armaan Malik, Marianne D'Cruz's and Altamash Faridi, it has Indian as well as western flavour, but there's no "wow" factor in it. People need to understand that romantic songs are not only about some lovey-dovey lines and slow music. The song lacks emotions.

For a change, "Love you till the end (House Mix)" turns out to be nice and peppy. Armaan Malik went behind the mike to sing the song. The beats are groovy.

"Naacho re" follows it. Sung by Ujjayinee, it is a mess. The listener will surely have the 'What the hell' expression after listening to the song.

The "Jai jai jai jai ho" title track is an effort by singers Wajid, Armaan Malik, Brijesh Shandliya and Amal Mallik. Its chance of wooing music lovers in urban India is however bleak and it will certainly not be accepted in rural areas too, although the beats are good.

A remix version of "Photocopy" by DJ Angel is next on the list. It is good to the ears. An apt song for festive season!

"Baki sab first class hai", a remix by DJ Angel, wraps up the album. The concept of creating a remix version of anything and everything should be avoided. There is nothing good about it and it is a waste of time and effort.

Overall, the "Jai Ho" album has its ups and downs.

Ex-royal who has seen both sides of Bollywood

$
0
0

Just as you leave the Mall, the hill station's main shopping street, towards the chief minister's official residence, the narrow road meanders its way to a heritage hotel owned by the erstwhile royal family of Jubbal that has an enduring link to Bollywood.

Uday Singh and his grand Woodville Palace, now a heritage hotel with typical British Raj architecture, have over the years seen no less than 25 films shot there, among them Prakash Mehra's "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar", Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Black" and Raj Kumar Hirani's "3 Idiots".

But then, the former royal has also witnessed the ugly side of the picture projected on the silver screen.

The "real picture" that goes on behind the sets has taught Uday Singh that men from the underworld can surface any time to rescue the cast and the crew in their moments of distress; and how a silver ice-bucket can wash the synthetic smile off the King of Romance; and how antiques are not safe when the stars descend on the ground for a film shoot.

Uday Singh remembers a night in the early 1990s when he got a call from an underworld don.

"A shooting was going on for over a month in our hotel in 1992. Suddenly, the shooting stopped and the entire unit packed and left without clearing the bill. Our hotel staff informed the police and the entire film crew was detained on the outskirts of Shimla," Uday Singh told IANS in an interview.

"On the same night I got a telephone call and the man on the other side was a known underworld don. 'Raja Saab you have detained my men. You will get the payment in the morning. I know my people are wrong, but you must ensure their release in the morning'," he said.

The next morning, four people came to his office and cleared the pending bill of Rs.300,000.

Recalling another incident, Uday Singh said yesteryears superhero and King of Romance Rajesh Khanna, who was staying in his hotel, shouted at him.

"Rajesh Khanna was with us for his movie 'Kudrat'. One evening Khanna called me in his room and offered me a drink. He asked me to arrange more ice for him. I called the waiter and asked him to bring the ice. The waiter, as a mark of respect, brought the ice in a silver bucket."

Seeing the silver bucket, he said, Khanna, who was drunk, started abusing him. "You are trying to impress me. I am a superstar. Earlier you offered me ice in a plastic bucket and now you are offering a silver bucket. Oh! You are king and we are paupers. It's your palace. We have to go by your rules."

Uday Singh said Khanna had to be pacified by director Chetan Anand and actor Raaj Kumar, who too were staying in the hotel.

The royal scion has pleasant memories about Amitabh Bachchan.
"Amitabh is the most refined Bollywood personality I have ever met. He is very unassuming and has no airs. During his stay when 'Black' was being shot, I offered him a drink. He politely refused. Then, at the dinner, I asked him about some non-vegetarian dish. He said: I have done and seen it all, but now I have left everything."

Recalling an interesting incident when a yesteryears actress had stolen an antique from his hotel, Uday Singh said it happened during the shooting of Dev Anand's "Lootmar".

When the news of the theft spread, the actress returned it before the matter could reach the police.

"Even Stardust (film glossy) had reported the incident," Uday Singh added.

The Jubbal family resided in the palace till 1977 when it was converted into a hotel-cum-palace.

Actor-producer Abhay Deol is miffed with the music company T-Series, which has stalled the release of the music of his film One By Two, as it wants him to get composer Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to sign a clause first.

At the 20th Annual Life OK Screen Awards held Tuesday night, Abhay arrived with a swollen eye and when asked if he was alright, he said, "No, I am not alright. My film is releasing Jan 31. My music has not yet released because the music company wants me to get the composers Shankar-Ehsaan and Loy to sign a clause which is illegal."

He openly named the company and said he has suffered the loss and the music is not available anywhere.

"It's T-series... The solution is: don't make me sign a clause which is illegal. It's just two weeks to the film and my music is not available. The loss has happened, the film releases Jan 31 and my music is not available anywhere. I will not hide anything. I can only go to the press now," the 37-year-old said here.

Abhay stars alongside girlfriend Preeti Desai in the film.

"Let's see what will happen, they are not marketing my film, the music is not on the radio also. What else can I do?" he added.

Abhay will soon hold a press conference about the issue.

"It is an issue of copyright. I will talk about it after first talking to Shankar, Ram Sampat, Vishal-Shekhar, they are all with me. The music industry is supporting me, let's see if the actors and producers will," he said.

"One By Two" has been directed by Devika Bhagat and also stars Rati Agnihotri, Lillete Dubey and Darshan Jariwala.

TV actress Ragini Khanna will be seen opposite Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Pushpendra Mishra's comedy film "Ghoomkethu".

Roles written for actors, not just stars make Nawazuddin happy

Versatile actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who will be seen playing the lead character in comedy film "Ghoomkethu", is pleased that now roles are also written for actors like him and not only for big stars.

Directed by Pushpendra Mishra, "Ghoomkethu" features Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the protagonist.

"I am happy that while earlier films were written keeping in mind the stars, now it is done for actors. The films which are being written for the actors have different kind of characters," Nawazuddin said at a press conference here Tuesday to promote the film.

"Today, I am getting a platform where I can do varied characters which are not cliched with similar kind of films, costumes, looks and dialogue deliveries and I thank people like Pushpendra for this," he added.

Known for roles in films like "Kahaani", "Talaash" and "Gangs of Wasseypur", he likes to choose his scripts very carefully and believes the industry will not give him a second chance if he fails to deliver as an actor.

"It's very difficult to select a film because nobody will give us a second chance if we do a couple of wrong films. Everything will finish in a year or two. I don't want to perish like this. I have got something which I would like to preserve for years," said Nawazuddin.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 20th Annual Life OK Screen Awards, says he does not have any words to thank the film industry for the grace and honour given to him.

Hosted by Shah Rukh Khan, the Screen Awards was held here Tuesday. The 71-year-old was given the honour by veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha and filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

"The grace and honour with which colleagues and friends, and all those behind the scene workers, commemorate the 45 years of my existence in this wonderful world of films, can never have sufficient words to fill that immortal cup of gratitude," Amitabh posted on his blog srbachchan.tumblr.com Wednesday.

He said it was an "awkward moment" for him to go on stage and say a few words after receiving the award.

"Perhaps it is easier for those that express, it certainly is not the most easiest for him that has to sit in not too great a distance, to listen and wait for that call from the stage to come up and get it! Get the reward," Big B posted.

Sonakshi disheartened with few nominations for 'Lootera'

Actress Sonakshi Sinha, who garnered appreciation for her performance in Vikramaditya Motwane's "Lootera", is unhappy that the film failed to get nominated for this year's movie awards.

The actress took to Twitter to share her disappointment, adding that the film had received enough appreciation for it to be nominated.

"Disheartening how 'Lootera' has been held back from most of the nominations this year. Didn't they call it a masterpiece, poetry in motion, world-class and technically superior film when it released? That seems like qualification enough to be out there," Sonakshi tweeted Wednesday.

The period drama, which also featured Ranveer Singh in the lead, received a mixed response after its release.

Although the actress has been nominated in the Best Actress category for the 20th Annual Life OK Screen Awards, she felt “out of place” as no one else from the film was nominated.

"Not nominating Vikramaditya for Best Director, Ranveer for acting, Amit Trivedi for music, (Mahendra) Shetty for cinematography, Aditya (Kanwar) for art, Subarna (Ray Chaudhuri) for costumes, Amitabh (Bhattacharya) for lyrics makes my nomination feel so out of place," she said.

Sonakshi said she is proud of the film, irrespective of whether it wins awards or not.

"...this is a very special film, (I) will always be proud of 'Lootera' whether or not they acknowledge us," tweeted Sonakshi, who has been seen in films like "Dabangg", "Rowdy Rathore" and "R...Rajkumar".

Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who hosted a special screening of comedy-drama "American Hustle" for the students of his acting school - Actor Prepares, says he is confident that the film will shine at the Oscars this year.

The film has been directed by director David O Russell, with whom Anupam worked in "Silver Linings Playbook".

The actor organised the screening of "American Hustle", which will hit theatres in India Friday, along with PVR Pictures at Cinemax, Versova here Tuesday.

"Watching a David O Russell movie made me nostalgic and reminded me of when we shot together for 'Silver Linings Playbook'," said Anupam in a statement.

"'American Hustle' has all the character, intricacy and panache that you would expect from a David O Russell film, especially a con film based in 1970s America.

"The cast pulls off their characters remarkably well, making 'American Hustle' a great lesson in acting. I am confident the movie will be a favourite at the upcoming Oscars," he added.

"American Hustle" is the story of a con man Irving Rosenfeld, essayed by Christian Bale, who along with his equally cunning and seductive partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper).

Kher, who shares a special relationship with "American Hustle" O Russell, used the movie as a lesson in acting for the students present.

Suchitra Sen 'extremely weak'

Though "extremely weak", the condition of legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, who is suffering from serious respiratory problems, continues to be stable with the aid of continuous oxygen therapy, a medical bulletin said Wednesday.

She is not out of danger yet.

"Her condition remains much the same. She is maintaining her oxygen saturation with the help of continuous oxygen therapy, nebulisation and chest physiotherapy," said the latest report released by the Belle Vue Clinic where she is kept in the Intensive Therapy Unit.

The ailing legend is being fed through a tube and managed to speak for some moments to her family. Sen's actress daughter Moon Moon and granddaughters - actresses Riya and Raima - are by her bedside. Her son-in-law is also there.

"She still remains extremely weak," said the bulletin.

Subrata Maitra, a doctor in the seven-member medical team treating the actress at the nursing home, said, the film icon is wary of sessions of chest physiotherapy and blood tests as they further weaken and inconvenience her.

"At the moment she doesn't need non-invasive ventilation and since she is very weak we are not opting for it. If there is need then we will use the procedure. She is not out of danger yet," said Maitra.

Her cardiac status is stable.

The 82-year-old initially suffered chest infection and was undergoing treatment for it at the nursing home since Dec 23. Her condition worsened Dec 28 night.

Following complications, Sen was put on non-invasive ventilation Jan 3.

Sen, who ruled Bengali cinema for decades, has been a recluse ever since she quit acting over three decades ago. Known for her power-packed performances in highly acclaimed Bengali films such as "Deep Jwele Jaai" and "Uttar Falguni" as well as Hindi movies "Devdas", "Bombai Ka Babu", "Mamta" and "Aandhi", she has been dubbed as the Greta Garbo of Bengali cinema.

She won the best actress award for "Saat Paake Bandha" at the Moscow Film Festival in 1963.
