The six-day event will be held at the Taj Palace Hotel here.

Rimple is ga ga over the “Gangs of Wasseypur” actress.

She said: “Huma is one of the most promising newcomers in Bollywood, having delivered some mind blowing performances to much critical acclaim and accolades. She is a great personal friend and has been seen a number of times wearing a Rimple & Harpreet Narula creation."

Harpreet feels as a muse she embodies the label's philosophy.

"She is a modern young Indian woman, confident with her curves, outspoken with her thoughts yet very much grounded and connected to her Indian roots and values. We feel her natural beauty is reminiscent of a bygone era. Given the long standing designer-muse relationship, Huma is the perfect choice to be the showstopper for our debut at the event,” Harpreet said in a statement.

Titled “The Eternal Wanderlust”, the collection, inspired by nomads and wanderers who used to abound in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Thar and Sahara deserts, ancient Persia and Syria, is an interpretation of their way of life and journey.

Riteish Deshmukh has replaced comedian Kapil Sharma in Y-Films' comedy “Bank-Chor”.

“Loved the script. Loved the character. Loved the team,” Riteish, who is riding high on the success of “Ek Villain”, said in a statement.

“I've always liked to push the envelope with the choices I make. This film allows me to potentially rip it apart. Watch out there's a new Bank-Chor in town,” added the actor.

Ashish Patil, business and creative head, Youth Films, Brand Partnerships and Talent Management at Yash Raj Films, vouches for Riteish's versatility.

“From villainy to action in his upcoming 'Lai Bhaari', there's nothing he can't do! And with 'Bank Chor', Riteish is in a zone that's a serious strength - comedy! He adds the scale, madness and weight that the project deserves,” said Patil.

The audiences are in for one hell of a ride, he added.

A comic-caper, “Bank-Chor” is about three morons trying to rob a bank. They choose the worst day possible for the heist and get caught in the crossfire of cops, industrialists and corrupt political leaders.

Patil is producing "Bank-Chor" and Bumpy is directing it. They will start shooting immediately as the plan is to release it in early 2015.

Actor Varun Dhawan, who followed up the success of his debut film "Student Of The Year" (SOTY) with comic entertainer "Main Tera Hero" and will now be seen in a romantic film "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania", says he feels he's not ready to do an intense film like "Ek Villain".

"Ek Villain", which released recently, stars Varun's SOTY co-actor Sidharth Malhotra. Varun has kept away from such a role as he believes his face doesn't suit the character and he needs to get mature for such roles.

Asked if he would have been able to pull off a role in a movie like "EK Villain", Varun said: "Maybe yes! If I would have got it, I would have pulled it off. But I don't want to do something like that at the moment because my face doesn't suit it.

"I need to (look more) mature. When I am ready to do something like that, then people should feel, 'He is ready'."

Varun, 27, also pointed out how actors like Sidharth, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, are all older to him age-wise.

"I am the youngest (among) all of them," he said.

Next up after "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania", which releases Friday, Varun will be seen in Sriram Raghavan's "Badlapur".

Talking about the thriller, the actor said: "It's an out-and-out thriller and a little twisted...not commercial masala. My look is different and the film is different. We have shot the first half.

"We are shooting in very unknown areas so that nobody gets to see the looks and nothing about the film (is revealed)."

Actress Nargis Fakhri, who is making her debut in Hollywood with the film "Spy", says she is comparatively more comfortable in Bollywood.

"I think I am feeling comfortable in Bollywood more than in Hollywood because I have spent more time here now and I am understanding a lot of things. I am feeling pretty good here. I really don't plan on running off anywhere," Nargis, who finds it "easier" to communicate in English, told IANS.

"What I do love so much is music and dancing so, that's why I prefer to give more attention here. I love music," she added.

The current status of Nargis' career is much to her liking.

"I always wanted to do a bit of Bollywood and a bit of Hollywood. I am in a great phase and very happy. I have made it on my own, so it's been an interesting journey," she added.

The "Rockstar" actress is currently in process of looking at some scripts.

"I like to take my own time and I don't like to rush. I do take time and I have patience. I have worked with biggest actors from the beginning I am hoping God will bless me to work with other big actors," added Nargis.

Promotions are polite way of begging: Alia Bhatt

$

Alia Bhatt has been going all out with her co-star Varun Dhawan to spread the right buzz for their forthcoming movie "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania". The actress equates promotions to a "polite way of begging".

In an interview, the actress, who has featured in "Student Of The Year", "Highway" and "2 States", has spoken about her hopes from "Humpty...", the team's promotional spree for the movie, and her camaraderie with Varun.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q. Are you looking forward to a fourth hit with "Humpty..."?

A. Of course I want a fourth hit! It would be amazing to have three hits in one year. It has the scope to reach out to the widest spectrum of the audience because it is a family entertainer. It's been a while since we had a pure romantic film.

Q. Your co-star Varun Dhawan tells me that you two have been singing at all the events and publicity for "Humpty..."?

A. Yes, and that's taking a toll on me. It's not easy to go on stage and sing in front of large crowds. But I guess it's important to have fun while promoting a film. But by the end of the day, your mind starts playing tricks on you as you are tired going from one event to another. During '2 States' the pace and the method of promotion were far less exhausting.

Q. In what way?

A. It wasn't a subject that needed to be be promoted in malls and pubs. In fact, I had to keep reminding them to make me do more. "Humpty..." is relatable to the young. So, Varun and I have to go all-out to reach out. Promoting a film should be a time to go all-out. Even those who don't have an interest in the film should want to see the film by the time we are done. Promotions are a very polite way of begging.

Q. You play a Kareena Kapoor fan in "Humpty..."?

A. I don't exactly play her fan in the film. I play a fan of her lehenga. Let me explain. She wants to get the kind of lehenga that Manish Malhotra made for Kareena. Of course, Kavya, my character likes Kareena. But it's the lehenga she really wants for her own wedding.

Q. So is Manish making an appearance in the film?

A. No. But he is there in spirit.

Q. How different did you find Varun in "Humpty..." as compared with what he used to be during "Student Of The Year"?

A. I'd have been better able to answer that question if I had met him after a break. But we were constantly meeting, so I have no way of seeing any change in him. Varun has not changed for me at all. He remains as quirky and goofy and as caring as ever. I hope he never changes. I'll slap him if he does. We discovered a mutual fondness before we became actors.

"So it's not as if we became friends because we worked together. As an actor, he has genuinely grown a lot. During "Student Of The Year", he was constantly charged up and eager to give a good shot. Now he thinks like the character. In "Humpty...", he was thinking like Humpty.

Huma Qureshi has shed those extra pounds, is looking much leaner and has become the cover girl of Femina. She says she has achieved all that by making healthy choices.

If she wowed everyone with her performance in "Gangs of Wasseypur", her curvy figure started a new trend.

But shedding weight hasn't altered her fondness for food.

"I have a fabulous trainer who has put me on a healthy diet. I have stopped eating junk food. I workout almost everyday - do yoga, stretching and some running.

"I am quite enjoying this new phase of being fit and I am doing it in the right way, I don't believe in crash diet. It's very unhealthy. It should be done in the right way," she added.

Huma appears as the cover girl on Femina with the tagline - Be Unstoppable and she loves it.

"It was a great experience. I am very proud to be the Femina cover girl and very proud to be part of this special feature, which says 'Be unstoppable' because every woman believes that she can be unstoppable," she said.

Actor Ali Fazal is being praised by critics and viewers for his performance in "Bobby Jasoos", but he's a tad disappointed as his parents haven't been able to watch the recently released movie due to Ramadan.

Ali is "super ecstatic" with the "amazing response" he has received for the Vidya Balan-starrer, and says his phone hasn't stopped buzzing since the movie released July 4.

"I am only a tad bit disappointed for my parents and close friends in Lucknow who were excited to see the movie. Since Ramadan is going on, they haven't got an opportunity to watch the film. I wish they could have seen the film as the movie celebrates Ramadan and the jashn (festival) of life," Ali said in a statement.

In all his previous films - "3 Idiots", "Always Kabhi Kabhi" and "Fukrey", Ali had a limited scope of exposure. But "Bobby Jasoos", in which he shares screen space with National Award winning actress Vidya, has helped him get better recognition.

Actors beef up, tone up, tonsure and do more for their on-screen characters off and on. Now, it's for actress Swara Bhaskar to gain weight for her role as a mother in "Nil Battey Sannaata". She says it's a "guilt-free binging opportunity".

The "Raanjhanaa" actress, who is currently shooting for "Nil...", directed by Ashwiny Iyer, has been asked to gain weight as she looked too young for the role of a mother to a teenager.

Confirming this, Swara said in a statement: “I am a happy foodie and I am glad for this guilt-free binging opportunity. The chef at the hotel in Agra where I am staying, runs an excellent kitchen and I am thoroughly enjoying all the amazing cuisine on the menu."

But what will happen after she finishes shooting the film?

“I don't know, crash diet I guess! I have to start shooting for Sooraj Barjatya's 'Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo' after this. I need to be back in a slim avatar. I guess I'll have to starve myself the day I stop shooting this film ('Nil...')," she quipped.

Adman-writer Prasoon Joshi Thursday hailed the budget presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for this fiscal saying it has "realistically touched upon many important sectors and segments".

"Growth oriented and sensitive budget. It is a statement of intent that has realistically touched upon many important sectors and segments," said Joshi, also Chairman CEO of McCann Erickson India, in a statement.

The first budget of the Narendra Modi government is seen to promise corrective measures to unburden the poor from rising prices, revive investor confidence and cut excessive expenditure.

"The thrust on infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing and rationalization of duties on input costs is welcome. From focus on rural electrification, defence or aspects like Swachh Bharat, protection of women, Beti Bacaho Beti Padaho or allocations for the sports university and the artisans and the simple measures like Braille on the notes for the visually impaired reflect that the government has economic and social vision and credible intention even at a micro level," said Joshi.

"Of course there will always be more to ask for in terms of corporate or personal income tax and requirement for our specific industries but we need to see whether holistically the economy is being put on track and we are moving responsibly and progressively in the direction of economic revival," he added.

The budget has nothing special for the film industry and Joshi, known for penning songs like "Chand sifarish" and scripting the movie "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", and active in filmdom, however, has not commented upon the same.

Zohra Sehgal: An unmatched, unstoppable spirit (Obituary)

$
0
0

Ageless and timeless in her over seven-decade-long theatre and film career, Zohra Sehgal's zest for life, wit and charm will continued to inspire generations to come.

If Zohra, who died Thursday at the age of 102, was named the "Laadli of the Century" by the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF)-Laadli Media Awards, she was also labelled a "tireless performer" by her fans and well-wishers.

Her over 70-year professional journey is beautifully summarised by well-known stage personalities M.K. Raina and Anant Raina in "Zohra Sehgal: An Interview 2012", a documentary featuring a lengthy interview with the actress along with old photos from her family albums showing how she didn’t let age dampen her spirit at all.

On her 100th birthday, her first official biography, "Zohra Sehgal: Fatty" by her daughter Kiran Segal was released.

Born as Sahibzadi Zohra Begum Mumtaz-ullah Khan April 27, 1912 in Saharanpur in then United Provinces, Sehgal was one of seven children of Mumtazullah Khan and Natiqua Begum.

After graduating from Lahore's Queen Mary College, Zohra, who was passionate about dance, chose career over marriage. Her tryst with showbiz began with dance when she joined Uday Shankar in 1935 and worked with him for a few years.

She went on to teach dance in Almora later, and that's where she met painter and dancer Kameshwar Sehgal and married him. She later took to dramatics with the Prithvi Theatre in 1945.

Zohra worked with them for 14 years, travelling to various cities, and even joined the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA).

Her journey into filmdom was been interesting too. Described as a doyenne of Indian theatre, she appeared in over 20 films.

Apart from others, she worked with four generations of Bollywood's famous Kapoor family - from Prithviraj Kapoor to Raj Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor to Ranbir Kapoor, she worked with them all.

Co-incidentally, her last movie "Saawariya", was Ranbir's first movie.

Zohra had joined Prithvi Theatres in 1945, and had said that the 14 years she spent there had a affirmative influence on her life.

“If you like my work today or praise my work, it's all thanks to Prithviraj (Kapoor),” she was quoted as saying.

Zohra is best remembered for her appearances in "Bhaji on the Beach" (1992), "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", "Bend It Like Beckham" (2002), "Dil Se..." (1998) and "Cheeni Kum" (2007).

She was perhaps one of the first Indians to have a taste of international entertainment. In the mid-1960s, she featured in an adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's "The Rescue of Pluffles", and then also anchored a few episodes of television series "Padosi".

While she was in London, she featured in a film called "The Courtesans of Bombay", directed by James Ivory in 1982. There was no looking back in international showbiz thereafter.

She went on to feature in TV series like "The Jewel in the Crown", "My Beautiful Launderette", "Tandoori Nights" and "Never Say Die".

Zohra came back to India in the 1990s. She was around 80 years old then. While many would have thought she would quit the entertainment world, she was not ready to call it a day.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who directed her in two of his films, "Hum Dil..." and "Saawariya", had once said: "To call her a livewire is an understatement."

On the small screen, she featured in "Amma and Family", and bagged roles in big banner movies.

She was passionate about acting that she never said no to any role, even if it was not up to the mark.

“Acting is the only thing I enjoy apart from kissing my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren,” she had said in one of her interviews to ibnlive.in.com.

“I have hardly ever refused a role. If I get a bad role, I take it up and work on it.”

Her work won her several prestigious awards. In 1998, she was honoured with the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours, following which she received the Kalidas Samman in 2001, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2004. In 2010, she was bestowed the Padma Vibhushan.

At the fag end of her life, age-related problems surrounded her and she had requested for a ground-floor government accommodation from the union culture ministry and the urban development ministry, under the artiste quota, but it was denied. She was 101 at that time.

'Shab' within my area of expertise, experience: Wendell Rodricks

$

A designer of repute, Goa-based Wendell Rodricks usually stays away from "chaotic" Bollywood, but has bent the rules for director Onir because he feels the script was well within his "area of expertise" as he has seen such characters in his "25 years in fashion".

Rodricks will style actor Ashish Bisht for Onir's "Shab" and currently the film's line producer Ajay Govind is hunting for location in Mussoorie.

"I took up Onir's film as he gave me a bound script, which I found interesting and was well within my area of expertise and experience," Rodricks told IANS in an email interaction from Goa.

"It (Bollywood) works on a different system that seemed a bit chaotic. However, when Onir approached me to do the central male character in 'Shab', I felt that I could do justice to this character...without being on the set," he added.

"Shab" is set in South Delhi and explores human relationships.

Without divulging much about the character he is styling, Rodricks said: "I know this character well. I have seen these characters in my 25 years in fashion. I know what they think, feel and result in becoming. It is a lesson in human psychology and the brutal glamour world we live in."

So far he is happy with the outcome of his work.

"From the little I have done, I am satisfied that I will meet the director's,the stylist's and the star's expectations. Contrary to what people may expect, I am approaching this as a costume stylist. Not all the clothes will be Wendell Rodricks in style and flavour...unless they meet the scene."

Another high point of "Shab" is that Onir's work style is in tandem with Rodricks.

"I am enjoying the process as Onir is a very focussed

yet easy to get along with director. He is open to suggestion and gives me the freedom to embellish the role through costume. My job is to make the character believable, plausible and engaging for the audience," said the designer.

In the past, he had designed actress Bipasha Basu's clothes for "Jism".

"Later I did clothes for my own scene in Kaizad Gustad's "Boom" and Madhur Bhandarkar's "Fashion"," he recounted.

Although he doesn't do too many movie projects, he describes himself among the most "qualified persons to do films".

His qualification to work on movies comes from the fact that he trained in Los Angeles under Bill Travilla, the designer and master cutter, who styled Marilyn Monroe and Faye Dunaway.

"Bill Travilla was a master and Richard Wilkens a genius. When I saw Travilla's white, pleated Monroe dress from the 'Seven Year Itch', I was moved to tears. Till today, when I see that scene where she is with the dress flying around her over a New York subway grate, I feel a tingle down my spine that I actually held the dress and saw the original paper pattern," he said.

"I interned at the Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York and saw what the celebrated Bob Mackie did for Cher, Liza Minnelli, Carol Burnett and so many other stars," he added.
