Style up your glamour quotient this monsoon

$

0

The monsoon is often linked to romance and this rainy season brighten up your wardrobe by adding outfits in hues of red, green, and bright purple.

“Dark colours are popular as they don’t make mud and water stains prominent. Red, green, bright purple and blue are good choice. However navy and black are good evening wear options,” suggests designer Pam Mehta.

In terms of fabrics, Mehta feels one should go for "gabardine, denim and crepe silk - they works best in monsoon as they repel water".

There are few things that a girl should keep in mind while choosing the silhouette.

“Don't over accessorise, girls. For a day wear, light tunics, tank tops are popular if teamed up with trousers, also one piece knee length dresses in bright prints and colours work best. Avoid white, see through and heels in monsoon. Flip flops are a good option to stay comfortable and be on the move,” said Mehta.

Like girls, boys too can keep in account few things for the season, says designer Sunil Mehra.

“The dominant colours for boys includes blue, green and indigo. It is important to use the right fabric during monsoon as there are certain fabrics which lose their sheen once wet so ideally one should go for cotton as the fabric dries up fast,” said Mehra.

Actor Emraan Hashmi, who is gearing up for the release of "Ghanchakkar", his first comedy, says the film's director Raj Kumar Gupta is the biggest 'ghanchakkar'.

Co-written by Gupta and Parvez Sheikh, "Ghanchakkar" features Emraan as a forgetful Maharashtrian guy Sanjay Athray and Vidya Balan as his loud Punjabi wife Neetu.

"In this film, Raj Kumar Gupta has made us 'ghanchakkar'. Raj looks very sweet and simple, but I don't think he is. He is the biggest 'ghanchakkar'," Emraan said here in an interview.

"His (Gupta) and our writer Parvez's mind is so much twisted that the kind of script they have written, I can confidently say that when you all will watch the film, you all will become 'ghanchakkar'," he added.

So far, Emraan has played intense, negative and romantic roles on-screen, but "Ghanchakkar" is his first light-hearted drama and his favourite too.

"This character is one of my favourite characters. A guy who is not trying to be too funny, but he is inherently a huge Ghanchakkar," Emraan, who won applause for his character-driven roles in films like "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai", "The Dirty Picture" and "Ek Thi Daayan".

"Everyone in the film will make you laugh," he added.

Sooraj Pancholi coping well with jail, says sister Sana

$

Locked away with hardened criminals, Suraj Pancholi seems to be coping well with his condition, according to his sister who met him at the Arthur Road Jail here.

Suraj's sister Sana visited Suraj in prison Saturday. To the family's relief the boy seemed to be in a good mental and physical health.

"Sana went with a lot of dread and despair in her heart. She came away hopeful, and confident that her brother would soon be out and free," said a friend of the Pancholis.

Apparently Suraj assured his sister of his condition.

"The other inmates are completely sympathetic about the sudden incarceration of young, inexperienced Suraj. They have sort of adopted him. They give him their share of food, look after him and protect him against any prison violence," the family friend added.

"Suraj knows his father is in a panic about the crisis. He told Sana to tell their father, 'I didn't do anything. They're saying I confessed to beating her (Jiah) up and many awful crimes. None of this is true. I didn't do anything wrong. And I didn't confess to anything,'" the friend of Pancholis said.

Meanwhile, the view that the six-page letter which Jiah's mother gave out to the police as Jiah's alleged suicide note being not authentic, is gaining credence.

The alleged suicide note and some of the letters that Jiah wrote to Suraj have been handed over to the government-recognised forensic company Helik Advisory for hand-writing authentication.

"The Pancholis are confident that the handwriting in the alleged suicide note would be found to be different from the handwriting in the letters that Jiah wrote to Suraj," the family friend said.

Watch out for 'more intimacy' in 'Dedh Ishqiya'

$

"Dedh Ishqiya", will go "much further" in intimacy than "Ishqiya". Actor Arshad Warsi is said to have some steamy lovemaking scenes with co-star Huma Qureshi, while even Madhuri Dixit has uninhibitedly shot for some cosy scenes with Naseeruddin Shah.

For those who saw Abhishek Choubey's "Ishqiya" three years ago, the film's raw sexual energy between Arshad and Vidya Balan still remains vivid. But according to a source close to the project Huma and Arshad "have pulled out all stops" making the lovemaking scenes in "Ishqiya" look like "a teaser trailer, and foreplay before the actual act".

That's not all. Madhuri, who makes a comeback in "Dedh Ishqiya", has also done some intimate scenes with Naseeruddin.

Director Abhishek Choubey said: "We shot their intimate romantic moments at the very beginning of the shooting. They've come out very beautifully. But let me state Madhuri's character is very different from Vidya's in 'Ishqiya'.

"Madhuri plays a Begum who lives in a palace in Lucknow. Since this is again 'ishqiya', we once again explore the various aspects of love and romance. What we discover in the relationship between Madhuriji and Naseer-saab is very different from the earlier relationsip between Vidya and Arshad.

"While Vidya's intimate scenes were earthy and raw, Madhuri-ji's amorous moments with Naseer-saab are approached with a lot of dignity."

Choubey says he has created two kinds of world and languages in "Dedh Ishqiya".

"One is the world of Naseer-saab and Arshad's characters being carried over from the first film. The other is the genteel aristocratic world of Madhuri that we introduce in this film. There is shaayari and mushaaira. But there's also Arshad's cruder expressions," he said.

Huma Qureshi plays Madhuri's friend and confidante in "Dedh Ishqiya".

"Huma was very excited about working with Madhuri. She plays Madhuri's kaneez(woman Friday). Her scenes with Madhuri are very special. I was in a dilemma about the casting of this role since Kangna Ranaut opted out. I was uncertain about what would happen.

"I knew Huma from earlier when she worked in 'Ek Thi Daayan', where I was a co-producer. So we are friends. Ultimately, Huma turned out to be the right choice and I haven't stopped congratulating myself for choosing her. In many ways, Huma's is the most complex character in 'Dedh Ishqiya'," said Choubey.

Now only the climax of the film remains to be shot. The film is expected to release in January 2014.

Learnt to embrace simplicity from SRK: Puvisha

Tamil actress Puvisha M., who has worked with Shah Rukh Khan in the forthcoming Hindi film "Chennai Express", says she learnt the art of being humble and simple from King Khan, who despite being a superstar never behaves like one.

"He may be a superstar but you never see him behaving like one because he is unbelievably friendly and down-to-earth. After working with him, I realised that despite being a superstar one can still choose to be simple. This is something I learnt from him and I will remember forever," Puvisha told IANS.

"I was told before I entered films that people change after they achieve fame, and I almost believed it until I met him Shah Rukh-ji, who proved that theory wrong. I also learnt from him that regardless of stardom, we can decide how we want to be," she added.

Puvisha, who made her cinematic debut in Bala Pazhanisaamy's critically acclaimed Tamil period-drama "Paradesi", was chosen for "Chennai Express" amongst 400 aspiring actors.

"I was least confident when I auditioned for 'Chennai Express' because there were nearly 400 like me who had come to bag the role of a typical south Indian girl," she said.

"I auditioned in typical south Indian attire, wearing a half sari and jasmine flowers on my head. (Director) Rohit Shetty was impressed with me. However, I only got a call after six months, by when, I had almost forgotten about the audition," said Puvisha, who plays a family member to actress Deepika Padukone's character in the film.

"Deepika and I are from the same family in the film. I play her uncle's daughter and I'm the one who is very close to her. It was so much fun shooting because almost 50 to 60 percent of the dialogues in the film are in Tamil and there are so many south Indian actors," she added.

Puvisha says SRK personally helped her overcome nervousness.

"In one of the scenes I'm supposed to hold his hand and almost hug him. I just couldn't do it because I was so nervous! But eventually when we shot, he held my hand and gave me the confidence to do the scene," she said.

A trained Bharatanatyam dancer for 20 years, Puvisha says she missed dancing in the film, but has no regrets whatsoever.

"I'm a trained dancer and I would've loved to shake a leg with Shah Rukh-ji, but unfortunately that didn't happen. But, I really didn't mind because I can always feel proud to have worked with a superstar," said Puvisha, who was born and raised in Malaysia.

Southern actress Priyamani was roped in for a special item number in the film, which is produced by Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainment.

Also starring are Sathyaraj, Manorama, and Mohan Raman in important roles. "Chennai Express" releases Aug 8.

Enter filmdom with devotion: Nageswara Rao

$

He was born in a farmer's family but grew up to be one of the country's acting legends. Akkineni Nageswara Rao believes one should enter films with "devotion" and not because it is the "fashion" to do so and says if you're popular, you're bound to be responsible for your actions.

"You always carry huge responsibility as an actor when you become popular. One should be careful about his or her actions both in films and in public life," Rao told IANS in an interview.

"Cinema is an honourable profession which gives you fame, money, laurels and popularity. Therefore, come with devotion, but never enter the industry for fashion," added the octogenarian, who made his cinematic debut as a lead actor in 1944 Telugu film "Seetha Rama Jananam".

Since then, he has worked in over 200 Telugu films in a career spanning seven decades.
Besides the coveted Dadasaheb Phalke Award, three of the country's four top civilian honours - the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri - have been conferred on Rao.

Known for his work in Telugu films such as "Devadasu", "Mayabazar", "Dr. Chakravarthy" and "Muga Manasulu", Rao, popularly referred to as ANR, has always believed in "longevity" to connect with his audiences.

"I was very careful from the beginning and knew that I need to focus on longevity in order to connect with audiences with every role I adorned. I was also aware of my weakness and hence it was all the more important for me to choose the right film with utmost care," he said.

Rao never hesitated to play a variety of roles, such as a villager, an urban educated protagonist, a tragic hero and even a comedian, to sustain his popularity over the years.

"I never wanted people to get bored of seeing me on the screen in similar roles," said Rao, who still has a fan base equivalent to that of his star son Akkineni Nagarjuna.

From being a farmer's boy to India's most respected actor: How did it happen?

"I dropped out of school because my family couldn't afford it. I used to help my mother at her work, but at leisure, I used to stand in front of the mirror and act. My mother noticed my interest in acting and asked my brother to introduce me to the local theatre group," he said, adding: "I can't even think of what I would have been if not an actor".

Remembered for his memorable roles in films such as "Sudigundaalu", "Antastulu" and "Meghasandesam", Rao recalls "Batasari" and "Devadasu" as two films he will always be proud of.

"I still consider 'Batasari' as one of my finest performances in my career. There was only one page of dialogue in the whole picture and the role demanded maximum use of expressions," he added.

Despite strong criticism, Rao acted in "Devadasu", only to be catapulted to the status of Telugu cinema's first romantic hero.

"Many said I wasn't suited to star in a romantic saga, but the criticism made me all the more eager to prove myself. "Devadasu" went on to become a classic, he said.

How did he manage the competition?

"There were few people in the industry when I entered at 19. It helped me because the industry was looking for a new boy as the established actors were under contract with studios," he added.

Did his busy acting career keep him away from his family?

"Initially, it was challenging as I got extremely busy with my career. As I learnt to include discipline into my schedules, I found ample time for my family," said Rao, who was married to Annapurna Akkineni for 62 years. She passed away in 2011.

Rao has two sons and three daughters - the eldest son Venkat Akkineni is a popular producer, while the second son Nagarjuna is a renowned actor. Daughters Saroja, Susheela and Sathyavathi are settled.

Rao's grandchildren Sushant, Sumanth, Naga Chaitanya are all actors while his youngest grandson Akhil is likely to soon enter films.

At 88, Rao is all set to share screen space with his son and grandson in upcoming Telugu family-comedy "Manam".

Sharing his thoughts about the 100-year-old India cinema, he said the industry needs to become more "experimental" and attract "global audiences".

Beautiful smile: Dental makeover on the upswing

$

0

For young or old, a visit to a dentist was seen as a painful experience. Only bleeding gums and toothaches could push people towards dental clinics. Things have changed now as growing numbers in India, conscious of the way their teeth appear, frequent dentists to get whitening, correction or decoration jobs.

Ekta Chadha, smile designer at the Smile Studio, said: "There is a substantial growth in the number of people seeking better dental health as well as having better teeth presentation."

Usually celebrities would avail themselves of dental-related cosmetic treatment, but this is no more restricted to the glamour industry, says Shikha Giri, consultant prosthodontist and implantologist at the Seven Hills Hospital.

"We have people from all walks of life coming to us to have their smiles beautified. Corporate people, air hostesses, lawyers, doctors, and even housewives and teenagers are more than eager to improve their smile," Giri told IANS.

The cost for dental cosmetic treatment starts from Rs.1,000 and can go up to Rs.150,000.

Tooth whitening and bleaching are among the most sought after treatments as smoking and caffeine are among the principal culprits.

"Bleaching per cycle costs around Rs.8,800. The duration depends on the frequency of intake of tea, coffee and the like, but roughly it ranges from one to two-and-a-half years," said Giri.

Rachana Doshi, aesthetic and cosmetic dentist, Bright Whites, Mumbai, suggested that people who consume coffee or tea frequently should opt for in-office whitening.

"In-office whitening usually has a better effect because of slightly higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide," Doshi told IANS.

Ceramic veneers are recommended for a beautiful smile. A single veneer costs around Rs.8,000.

"It involves making thin ceramic shells customised for a patient's tooth. These are cemented on to cracked, chipped or discoloured teeth, making for a perfect smile," Doshi said.

If flaunting a set of pearly white teeth is the cause for seeking treatment, people with small teeth or gummy smiles also visit dentists.

"Crown lengthening procedure is used to increase the size of teeth, in case they are too small or make for gummy smile. This procedure should be followed by full coverage crowns for longevity," said Giri. The treatment costs Rs.1,500 per tooth.

Many like to accessorise their teeth. Tooth jewellery is considered to be a "statement treatment" amongst college students and brides and is usually priced at Rs.1,000.

"It involves putting a white or coloured stone on one front tooth. It is quite a statement treatment amongst collegians and brides. There is no drilling or cutting of the tooth whatsoever. The stone is simply cemented on to the tooth," said Doshi.

If youngsters are saddled with braces, it spoils their looks. But thanks to advancements, braces have evolved and there is the option of invisible braces.

"They are a form of orthodontic treatment in which the braces are hidden from view or made less visible. They come in the form of lingual orthodontics, or ceramic tooth coloured braces," said Shetty.

The alternative is expensive - generally costing about Rs.1.5 lakh.

Customised lingual braces are costlier and the "only hitch is that people find it difficult to talk because the tip of the tongue touches the back of the teeth," Chadha added.

This trend is seeing an upsurge not just in the metros but even in tier-II and tier-III cities.

Sahith Kumar Shetty, consultant maxillofacial surgeon at Mysore's Columbia Asia Hospital, said patients come for treatment related to the beautification of teeth.

He said most of them are women, but some men are also showing interest.

"These procedures are higher during weddings. Dental corrections are often combined with other wedding preparations for both the bride and the groom," he added.

Actress Dia Mirza has spoken out against reports claiming she had not paid her water bills and says it happened because she was unaware they were pending bills.

The incident came to the actress' notice after it was reported in the newspapers.

"I am a law abiding citizen and the amount is not such that there can ever be a doubt I would try and avoid payment. The whole issue is a result of oversight, mis-communication and is unfortunate," said Dia, seen in films like "Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein", in a statement.

According to Dia's lawyer Gautam Mehmood, she was unaware about the water supply line. Now that the matter has been brought to her notice, she will pay the dues within two days.

"The non-payment of dues to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWWSB) was due to oversight. The water connection was taken a long time ago and Ms. Mirza was not aware of the same," he said.

"There is no dispute regarding either the water connection or the dues thereof while it would be relevant to state Ms. Mirza was not aware of the water connection or the bills due regarding the same but as a responsible citizen she is doing the right thing and settling all the bills within the next 24 hours," he added.

Actress Kavitta Verma has apologised to the Christian community for her "blasphemous" pose in forthcoming Bollywood movie "Policegiri", an activist said.

Kavitta's dressing scantily with a rosary on her body and the Holy Cross on her belly had raked up a controversy among Christians last week.

The Christian Secular Forum (CSF) had raised the issue with the movie's producers, T.P. Aggarwal and Rahul Aggarwal, and the Censor Board, demanding deletion of the offensive scenes from the movie, failing which they would not permit its release next month.

Late Monday, the producers invited CSF general secretary Joseph Dias and others for a meeting along with Verma.

"I tender an unconditional apology, as I am aware that the said picture has hurt your religious sentiments and that of the community and hereby withdraw the same," Kavitta's apology said.

Kavitta conceded that she made a "mistake" and committed to use religious objects in a "reverential" manner in the future.

"Both Verma and the Aggarwals tendered separate written apology to the Catholic community said that they hold the highest regard for all religions and would not include the offensive scenes in the movie. We are satisfied with it. We shall now write to the Censor Board to ensure that such scenes are deleted before the movie is released," Dias told IANS.

Explaining the strong stance on the issue, Dias said that Christians are commanded by their faith to forgive, but "that does not mean blasphemy of any kind will be tolerated."

He vowed that the CSF would continue to act as a watchdog not only for the Christian community but all other faiths, since religion is a sensitive issue with potential for provoking violent reactions.

He wears many hats and choreographer-actor-director Prabhudheva says being a dancer he relates more to romance than action and wonders how he became an action film director.

After directing two action movies in Bollywood - "Wanted" and "Rowdy Rathore", he dealt with his favourite genre in his forthcoming film "Ramaiya Vastavaiya", a romantic drama.

"As a choreographer, I am actually related to the romantic part because songs happen only when romance happens. I don't know how I became an action director," the 40-year-old said here Monday in an interview.

"When I did 'Wanted', people asked me you are a choreographer, how will you do an action film? But it happened," he added.

"Ramaiya Vastavaiya" marks the debut of Girish Kumar, son of producer Kumar Taurani.

Talking about Girish, Prabhudheva said: "I told Kumarji, when he booked me as the director, let me test him. He was hardworking and I liked him. One year later, we started the film."

"In that one year I told Kumarji to let him just dance our own Bollywood dance and not send him to any foreign country to learn all that... So he did that and every 15 days, he would send me a CD and he kept going to the next level," he said.

Shruti Haasan plays Girish's love interest in the film that also stars Sonu Sood, Randhir Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Poonam Dhillon and Satish Shah. It hits theatres July 19.
