Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is so smitten with the beauty of Ladakh that he keeps wanting to come back even after doing so each year for the past several years.

“I have been coming here every year since a lot of years. And this place calls you back. It’s never enough to be here...it’s beautiful,” Mehra said here during a casual tete-a-tete.

He is here for the festival premiere of his last release “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” at the second edition of the Ladakh International Film Festival (LIFF), which started here Friday.

The movie, a biopic on former athlete Milkha Singh, features actor Farhan Akhtar. It was well-received at the box office, and Mehra hopes for the same from the audience at the LIFF.

Noted lyricist-writer-filmmaker Gulzar Friday lit the lamp to open the second edition of the Ladakh International Film Festival (LIFF) here in Jammu and Kashmir Friday in the presence of other film icons, ministry dignitaries and officials. However, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who was slated to be present here, couldn't make it.

Jammu and Kashmir urban development minister Nawang Rigzin Jora, Leh Chief Executive Councillor Rigzin Spalbar, and Abdali, Afghanistan's ambassador to India, were present along with LIFF jury chair Aparna Sen, patrons Vishal Bhardwaj, Rekha Bhardwaj, filmmaker Rakesysh Omprakash Mehra, and National Award winning Marathi actress Usha Jadhav among others here.

"Our chief minister was supposed to be here in the morning, but he couldn't come because the collateral damage from the concert (Zubin Mehta's recent concert) still preoccupies him. There is curfew in a few districts," Jora said in his keynote address.

The opening ceremony was held at the Sindhu Sanskriti Auditorium nestled between barren mountains in the virgin beauty of Leh. The otherwise quiet environment was bustling with police officials, film enthusiasts, festival patrons, guests and government officials.

Gulzar, whose works will be showcased in a retrospective curated by talented filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, was in awe of the destination, and said he hopes that the "highest altitude film festival" also serves movies which are of "high standards".

He said he was happy to be "in such a beautiful destination in such a beautiful valley and among such beautiful people". His directorial venture "Mere Apne" is due to be screened at the fest, and Gulzar said he was as nervous about its screening as he was when the movie was first due for release.

LIFF was launched in 2012. The three-day festival is likely to screen around 120 short films, feature films and documentaries. A major highlight is the green carpet premiere of international documentary filmmaker Teri McLuhan's "Frontier Gandhi".

Actress Nimrat Kaur is in the cast of highly acclaimed film "The Lunchbox" and says her wishful thinking came true by being part of the drama that revolves around lunch and lunchbox.

Those who have seen the film are raving about it, so it is certainly a high for Nimrat.

"You don't even think that you will get an opportunity to do such a film," Nimrat said here Thursday in an interview.

Actor Irrfan's upcoming film "The Lunchbox" is being appreciated at film festivals across the world and he states that everyone whose opinion matters in international cinema, including the audiences, want "The Lunchbox" to become India's official entry into the Oscars.

On the foreign shores, Ritesh Batra's directorial venture has created a buzz - it went to the Toronto International Film Festival, and will be screened at the Zurich and London film festivals.

At Cannes this year, it won Critics' Week Viewers Choice Award.

"The opinion that critics and audiences have and also of those whose opinion matters, they believe if the film is sent from India (for the Oscars), it has the potential to travel forward," the 46-year-old said here Thursday in an interview.

"'Hollywood Reporter' (tabloid) has also written that 'we expect the film to be Oscar entry from India'. So this is a possibility with the film. It has this strength, universal appeal, fresh language and story," he added.

Irrfan feels this is an opportunity that should not be missed out on.

"I personally feel that this is a huge opportunity and should not be missed out on. The right film should be chosen. It affects the environment, the upcoming generation, it becomes a source of inspiration, it builds our morale that our language can connect with the global world," Irrfan said.

"This perception is not right that only a certain types of films are made in India. Cinema is being explored and flourishing. So, this decision is very important," added Irrfan.

"The Lunchbox" also stars Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui and hits theatres in Sep 20.

Telugu actor Sai Ram Shankar, who turned 37 Friday, says as his birthday resolution he has decided not to worry about failures and to focus on future.

"I know my films haven't done well, and therefore, people always ask me how I cope with failure. This is why I have decided not to look back at failures and instead work hard towards a bright future. I'm going to religiously follow it from this birthday," Sai Ram told IANS.

Brother of filmmaker Puri Jagannadh, Sai has starred in films like "Danger", "143" and "Neninthe". Unfortunately, he hasn't registered a hit yet in his career.

He says that his last release, Telugu romantic-drama "1000 Abaddalu", would have clicked at the box-office had there been no political agitation going on in Andhra Pradesh.

"I wouldn't blame director Teja for the film's bad run because I personally received good response for my role. In fact, I don't mind working with Teja again if given an opportunity. I know what he is capable of delivering and I don't think any actor would turn down an offer to work with him," he added.

"1000 Abaddalu", released on Aug 15, two weeks after soon-to-be new state Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Sai is upbeat about his upcoming releases - "Romeo" and "Dillunodu".

He said: "I'm looking forward to both the films. I hope they turn out to be successful at the box-office. They have the scope for success, but we have to wait for the audience's reception," he said.

Actress Raveena Tandon, who has teamed up with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for its dog adoption campaign "Puppy Love: Adopt, Don't Buy", urges people to adopt homeless dogs from the streets and shelters.

The 38-year-old has already set an example by adopting five stray dogs. In fact, she posed for PETA's ad campain with two of them.

"When you go for shopping (to buy dogs or puppies), you are promoting the breeders whose puppies are not of good quality. Sometimes you also go for the foreign breeds that are not suited for our country's weather and climate," Raveena, known for her work in films like "Patthar Ke Phool" and "Mohra", told reporters here Thursday at the launch of the campaign.

"So, for me, the best dogs, the best accustomed to this (Indian) weather and climate, to be the best guardian of your house or your area are these (stray dogs) dogs. So, look after them, but do it the right way," she added.

It's a difficult situation for me: Salman Khan

$

The seventh season of "Bigg Boss" is ready to hit the tube Sep 15 and Salman Khan is all set to take up the host's seat for the fourth consecutive year. But he confesses that hosting is an uphill task, as he has to do things that he doesn't enjoy doing.

"Bigg Boss - 7" will go on air on Colors and will see as many as 14 inmates, including celebrities, trying to survive and win the title.

"As a host at times things bother me on the sets. And I am forced to take a stand, and I hate it. I don't like to take a stand," said Salman.

"If I say something to someone, that guy has the right to give it back. It's a difficult situation in which I am. It's a difficult position to be in. So far we have been able to handle it," said the 47-year-old.

Salman, who entered the small screen as the host of "Dus Ka Dum", joined "Bigg Boss" in its fourth season and has been hosting it since. The show fetches good TRPs, thanks to the heightened drama, mud-slinging, fights and emotions that take place in the "Bigg Boss" house.

But the "Dabangg" star is not buoyed by the ratings, as his motto is to do a good work.

Salman told IANS: "I only have to do my work. If the show is good, people will watch, or else even I will not see it. I don't understand this TRP game at all, so it doesn't bother me at all."

Box office number games are not his cup of tea either.

"Even with box office they say Rs.100 crore, Rs.200 crore, but I don't understand this Rs.100 crore game at all. It doesn't matter to me. If the film is good, it will do well," said the actor whose films "Ek Tha Tiger", "Bodyguard" and "Dabangg 2" had joined the Rs.100 crore club.

He confessed as the host at times he lost his cool.

"Last time I lost my cool. I lost it the year before as well. I think they were disrespectful to Sanju (Sanjay Dutt who co-hosted season five with him). I remember that stuck in my head for two weeks and I couldn't handle that."

"As a person when I watch the show, I detach myself. As a host I am only there on Friday and Saturday. You go to the house as a common man. You are actually sharing your life with so many people. You behave like you are with your family, but that is your real personality."

Every year "Bigg Boss" gets into controversies when the inmates indulge in acrimonious fights, use bad language etc.

When asked if it would be a clean show this time, Salman said: "It depends on who is going in. I don't know who is going in. It's a wow types or awe types."

"I am sure they are going to have problems. But if they get along fine, tasks will be on a level that they will be forced to be broken."

At the same time, Salman praises inmates.

He said: "They (inmates) are doing a big favour by letting you in their house, lives, and personal space. It is a very big thing."

"So much you can learn from this. It's easy to say he or she was wrong, but when we are there in that situation, you think I would have reacted like this," he added.

Asked if he would ever like to be in the "Bigg Boss" house, Salman said jokingly: "It's difficult. I don't think I want to. Not for any other reason, but I will be too entertaining inside and TRPs would hit the roof and other people won't be able to hit that."

Media hype over Chinese incursion hit J&K tourism: Minister

The media hype over "Chinese incursion" and Uttarakhand floods affected the tourism industry this year, rued Jammu and Kashmir Urban Development Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora Friday.

Jora thanked Bollywood for boosting tourism in the region in his address at the opening ceremony of the second edition of the Ladakh International Film Festival (LIFF) here.

"It is thanks to films such as '3 Idiots', which are doing so much to promote tourism in Ladakh. Therefore, we are all very thankful to Bollywood for giving a fillip to our tourism industry," Jora said.

"Unfortunately this year, because of the incursion at the Chinese border, which wasn't much of a big deal, but the media hyped it so much that it messed up the tourism for us. The tourism here got bogged down by 30 percent.

"Plus, the fact that we had the Uttarakhand floods...it scared tourists from coming to the Himalayas. So this year has been a bit of a dampener for us," he added.

He pinned his hopes on Bollywood films, especially after Aamir Khan's "3 Idiots" brought the panoramic Pangong lake in spotlight.

"But I hope with more films being shot here in Ladakh, like Mehra (Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra) chose to shoot the training scenes in 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' here, it gives a fillip to Ladakh. Tourism, I believe, is a strong source of our economy and it needs to be promoted here," he said.

'Grand Masti' all about double entendres (IANS Movie Review)

$

Film: "Grand Masti"; Cast: Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani, Riteish Deshmukh, Sonalee Kulkarni, Bruna Abdullah, Manjari Phadnis, Kainaat Arora, Karishma Tanna and Maryam Zakaria; Director: Indra Kumar; Rating: no rating

We can re-christen "Grand Masti" as "Dildo Chahta Hai". And if that sounds crude then wait till you see and hear what Indra Kumar's new cocksure comedy has in store for you. There is no pulling back from the black hole of luridness this time.

I remember many of Indra Kumar's film featured a particular tree, which the director considers lucky. There is a tree here in "Grand Masti" too, where a rigid college principal hangs any student who looks with lascivious intent at the girls on the campus.

The three leering...sorry leading men who come together represent the spirit of defiant devil-may-care and chase women. If you feel movies that objectify women must be discouraged, then you are advised to stay as far away from this horny farce as possible.

There are the comedies. Then there are the SEX comedies. Filled with innuendos, suggestive leery double-meaning dialogues that make us chuckle and giggle even if we are not the sort who like to exchange dirty jokes in the SMS, "Grand Masti" has itself a ball at the expense of basic good taste.

The gags in "Grand Masti" unabashedly celebrate the puerile spirit of SMS forwards. If you packaged those pssst-pssst jokes from your puberty in plenty of loud aggressive dialogues loaded with double meanings and oodles of close-ups, you'd get into the spirit of "Grand Masti".

To their credit Aftab Shivdasani, Vivek Oberoi and Ritesh Deshmukh - now in their mid-30s - get into the spirit of the sex-comedy full-on. Oh, they love talking dirty!

The one thing that works fully in this film's favour is it unabashed homage to horniness. Our three heroes are perpetually aroused. To prove it they emanate moans groans and sighs constantly.

Kumar has never been a slave to subtlety. Here he pulls out all stops. He also pulls out other ummentionable objects that are defiantly pointed into our faces.

One really can't complain about the film's remarkably steep level of innuendos. Not a single member of the audience for "Grand Masti" expects anything but coarse humour borrowed from low-brow Gujarati plays.

Writer Milap Milan Jhaveri's wickedly wanton word-play leaves no space for subtlety in the script.

Stand-up comedian Suresh Menon shows up as a mock-villain wearing a golden underwear.

The obscenity flows out unstopped, unchecked, uncaring of rudimentary rules of decency. Having declared this to be irreverent territory director Kumar doesn't really care how lowbrow the humour gets. And the jokes happily really plumb to unimaginable depths.

More than the boys I salute the three pairs of ladies playing the trio of gharwallis and baaharwallis for surrendering to the sexually suggestive spirit of the proceedings.

The writing and direction in a film such as this is either a sign of absolute innocence about political correctness or indicative of an obstinate disregard for all good taste.

Show no leniency to juvenile criminals: Suresh Gopi

Malayalam superstar Suresh Gopi feels no leniency should be shown to juvenile criminals.

"Why should there be a different set of laws for criminals who are juveniles? As far as I am concerned there should be no reason for any leniency," Gopi told media persons here Friday, reacting to the death sentences awarded to the four convicts in the Dec 16, 2012 gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern in Delhi.

Of the six accused in the case, one was a juvenile and tried by the Juvenile Justice Board, which Aug 31 sentenced him to a reform home for three years, the maximum sentence under juvenile law. The sixth accused was found dead in his Tihar Jail cell.

The superstar, who has been rated as "the best-ever police official on screen", said the ideal judgement as far as he is concerned would have been one where the convict undergoes torture for life.

"Then only those who have done this heinous act would know what the real pain is," said Gopi.

Actress Bhavana said that she feels really happy that the accused have been given the death punishment.

"Today I am really happy about our judiciary because at times I felt, maybe the accused would wriggle out for want of proper evidence, but it did not happen," she said.

Students of law at Kochi said that the Delhi court should be complimented for the speed at which the judgement was delivered.

India should understand American way of making movies: Van Damme

Hollywood actor Jean-Claude Van Damme, known for his martial arts, Friday said that Indian filmmakers are making really good movies, but they need to understand the American thought process and movie-making technique to make a mark in their filmdom.

Van Damme, who launched Hollywood based Indian filmmaker Ashok Amritraj's autobiography "Advantage Hollywod" at the CII Big Picture Summit here Friday, talked at a session How India can make $100 million Films.

The 52-year-old said: "I am from Belgium. I am not an American, and I came to America with nothing, just like Ashok came with nothing. He came from a culture like India and I came from a culture like Belgium."

"I must say you guys have a very strong culture... I am a huge fan of Indian movies. But India should have sort of a school to understand the American way of making movies with some of the fantastic Indian actors. You don't have to learn anything, but you need to have a special way to understand American thinking, and how they make movies," he added.

He suggested that Amritraj can bring actors from different parts of the world to a school and make a movie that helps make inroads in Hollywood.

"You take those amazing talented people with Ashok and some American actors with some French and Asian actors to that school. He can present a movie in America, with American content in terms of script, no music, no this and that and then you move in with your culture in the US and they will start embracing you."

"And I think that is going to work. Because all I am saying that you have to go like a cowboy," he said.

Van Damme and Amritraj go a long way. The actor played the lead role in Amritraj's film "Double Impact", which turned out to be a turning point in their respective careers.

A fast-track court in Delhi Friday sentenced four men to death in the December gangrape case and Bollywood says that it is “a day of justice” as this will give a strong message to all those who look at women with “dirty eyes”.

The four men - Mukesh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur - were convicted Tuesday for brutalising the young woman in Delhi with gang rape and grievous assault last December that resulted in her death.

There were six attackers and one of the six accused was found dead in a cell in Delhi's Tihar Jail, while a juvenile involved in the crime was sent by the Juvenile Justice Board Aug 31 to a reform home for three years, the maximum under the juvenile law.

Here is what B-town has to say:

Karan Johar: Death sentence for the rapists! Thank god...there is a god and finally there is justice.

Anupam Kher: Death sentence for rapists. This Friday the 13th is a day of justice. Jai Ho (sic).

Akshay Kumar: Justice prevails, death sentence for the four rapists! Hope this conveys a message to the other men. They deserve nothing less for such a heinous act!

Kunal Kohli: Death Sentence for four rapists! Justice for Nirbhaya finally. Please hang the 'juvenile' also. He's as guilty as these four.

Raveena Tandon: Superb! For once it's been victory of the people! Delhi rape victim. Nirbhaya's rapists to hang (Sic).

Nikhil Advani: What we need to celebrate - time frame for delivering a verdict. Just shows that if required, the process can be expedited.

Neha Dhupia: Not in India, just heard about the death penalty for all four rapists. Finally, feel that not everything is wrong with the system! RIP Nirbhaya.

Mugdha Godse: It's a revolutionary judgment atleast out of 100, 10 will think before committing this horrible crime of rape.

Ehsaan Noorani: A prayer for the soul of Nirbhaya and a prayer for victims of rape to find the strength to carry on. Hope this sentencing sends a strong message out to men attempting this ghastly act again. Justice.
