India's film archives get copy of 1935 'Devdas'

The National Film Archives of India (NFAI) has acquired a copy of the first talkie "Devdas" movie of 1935 from the Bangladesh Film Archive, a top official announced here on Monday.

The Bengali movie, directed by Prathmesh C. Barua, was not available in India till now and the NFAI's efforts have resulted in acquiring it in a DVD format.

"This is a landmark moment in the history of the film archive as this was an important film for the Indian heritage and a very important addition to our collection", said NFAI director Prakash Magdum.

A three-member Bangladesh delegation led by Martuza Ahmed, secretary in the ministry of information, visited NFAI to study the Indian film archive and visit its state-of-the-art film storage facilities in Pune.

During the visit, the delegation presented a DVD copy of the 1935 landmark film in exchange for a copy of India's first silent feature film "Raja Harishchandra", directed by Dadasaheb Phalke in 1913, marking the birth of Indian cinema.

All the Indian prints of the Bengali version of "Devdas" were destroyed decades ago. Currently, there is only one copy of the film available, which belonged to the BFAI.

BFA director general Mohammad Jahangir Hossain said India was looking for the "Devdas" copy for 30 years.

The film exchange was possible due to special efforts taken by both the archives in recognising the need to extend support towards promoting the film heritage of both nations.

The NFAI has five versions of "Devdas", including four Hindi versions (1935, 1955, 2002, 2009) and one Telugu version (1953).

Barua's Bengali version is based on the novel by the same title penned by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, and starred Barua in the title role, Jamuna Barua as Parvati (Paro) and Chandrabati Devi as Chandramukhi.

This was Barua's first of three language versions of the story, the second being in Hindi and the third in Assamese.

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay was believed to be in his teens when he wrote the "Devdas" novel in 1901, which was published in 1917.

This classic masterpiece sensitively criticises the feudalistic society that prevailed. The film has been made in multiple languages including Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Telugu, Tamil, Urdu and Malayalam.

Small films also deserve importance: Manoj Bajpayee

Often slotted as an intense and serious artiste, acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee is content with the co-existence of all genres in Indian cinema, but says smaller films still need to be granted the importance they deserve. "The good thing happening nowadays is the co-existence of all kinds of genre in cinema. Whether it is completely commercial, niche or middle of the road, all kind of films are being made and most of them are finding a release. This is a fantastic co-existence,” Manoj told IANS. He, however, he stressed that the film industry “needs to work little extra on small films”. “Theatre owners start giving them (smaller) less importance when there is some big film coming, and this shouldn’t happen. We should be in favour of the right of small films too,” added the actor, who has starred in movies like "Zubeida" and "Pinjar" as well as ensemble cast movies like "Raajneeti", "Aarakshan" and "Gangs Of Wasseypur". Manoj, who started his career with a television serial "Swabhimaan" and later went on to do small roles in films like "Dastak" and "Bandit Queen", got his big break in the 1998 crime film "Satya". He even won a National Film Award for his role as Bhiku Mhatre. He was last seen in "Tevar" and is currently working on his next film titled “Traffic”, the Hindi adaptation of the eponymous critically acclaimed Malayalam blockbuster. Based on a true life incident of organ donation, the film also features Jimmy Shergill, Bengali superstar Prosenjit, Parambrata, Divya Dutta, Kitu Gidwani and Sachin Khedekar playing pivotal roles. The film has been directed by Rajesh Pillai, who helmed the original movie in Malayalam. Manoj, who plays a traffic policeman in the film, says it's a unique thriller. “It moves through a great speed and that is the quality which made me say 'yes' to this. Also, the character is something that people have never seen me playing before,” said the actor, who added that his research for the role was “either available with the director or with Google”. Apart from his acting projects, Manoj has also co-produced a film titled “Missing”. Asked if he plans to produce a film in the near furture, he said that these are “hard jobs.” “It's a thankless job too. At the end of the day, nobody is thankful of taking really good care of themm, so it’s a thankless job. But I enjoyed being part of the production because I like taking responsibilities and I am open about it. I have to wait for another great film,” he added.

Would love to do more negative roles: Juhi Chawla

$

Breaking away from her “bubbly and positive” image in Bollywood, Juhi Chawla played the grey shade character of Sumitra Devi in 2014 film “Gulaab Gang”. The actress says she would “love” to play more negative roles if they will be “fantastic and edgier”. “I would love to do more negative roles. I am open to doing something unusual again but I am spoiled after the experience of 'Gulaab Gang'. The next negative character has to be something fantastic and edgier than Sumitra Devi,” Juhi said here. During her career, the 47-year-old mostly appeared in romantic or comic roles in films like “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak”, “Bol Radha Bol”, “Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke”, “Darr”, "Ishq", “Son of Sardaar” and “Bhootnath”. So, a negative role was a change. "In 20 years of my career, I was only known for my bubbly, positive, sweet roles. I was apprehensive to play this kind of character who was completely evil from the first to last scene. So, I refused the role at first. But I liked the spunk in 'Gulaab Gang'," Juhi added. In "Gulaab Gang", which will be aired on Zee Action on August 22, she also got a chance to feature with her contemporary Madhuri Dixit. “Initially, I was quite apprehensive about how would we work together. But before we started shooting, Soumik (director Soumik Sen) called Madhuri and me to his office. We sat and chatted for a couple of hours and for me, that really broke the ice. I told her that it's really a good script and with us cast together for the first time, this film should go places,” Juhi said. The actress, who believes in "equality for women and in women empowerment", is content with the way her career shaped up in Indian films. "When I look back at my career and my life and how much I have learnt, I feel blessed with what I have. I have stopped fighting with myself. “There is an amazing power getting to know your inner self and learning how to use it and not fight with the world. If you know what makes you happy, your personality, interests and capabilities, just use them and everything else flows beautifully,” she said. Juhi will next be seen in “Chalk n Duster” along with Shabana Azmi, Zarina Wahab and Divya Dutta.

Shweta Tripathi not 'comfortable' doing kissing scenes

"Masaan" fame actress Shweta Tripathi might have kissed in the internationally acclaimed film, but she says she is uncomfortable doing such scenes.

The 30-year-old shared that kissing onscreen might seem like a "small thing", but it's not and that she was nervous when she had to tell her mother about the lip-lock scene with Vicky Kaushal in the Neeraj Ghaywan directorial.

"I told her that there is a kissing scene in the film and then there was silence from the other end. I was like 'Oh no!' My mom was surprised. I told her that the film had gone to Cannes International Film Festival and that when she will see the film, she would know that it's justified. Then she said 'Ok'.

"They are your parents, and for a girl it's more sensitive," Shweta told IANS.

When they saw the film at a special screening in the capital with the team, she said that her parents seemed to be "fine" with it.

"Richa (Chadha) and I were sitting right in front of them. Richa's parents were also there. She was also nervous about her scene. So I was like, 'Listen your scene is going to come in the beginning and then the movie will go forward, so nobody is going to remember it because you have given such a brilliant performance and mine comes just before the interval'," Shweta quipped.

The "Kya Mast Hai Life" actress was so nervous about her parents' reaction that she and Richa sat "holding hands".

"We were like little school girls. Sanjay Mishra and Neeraj were also sitting near us. Neeraj started laughing. That was one moment that I'll never forget. But that doesn't mean that I am comfortable doing kissing scenes.

"Neeraj gave me so much respect. He actually asked me that 'Shweta if you are not comfortable with the scene, we will not do it'. When you have a director like him, you feel no... I had read the script and I noticed that the kiss was important. I am not going to kill a writer's vision because I am not at comfort," she shared.

She will next be seen with Nawazuddin Siddiqui in "Haramkhor" in which she will essay the role of a teenager who falls in love with her teacher.

When is it hitting the screens?

"I'm hoping before this year ends because as an artist when you make something, you want people to see it and don't want to keep it to yourself," she said.

Want to popularise my 'karmaboomi' Meerut: 'Meeruthiya Gangsters' director

$

“Meeruthiya Gangsters” director Zeishan Quadri, who considers Meerut as his “karmabhoomi” (workplace), says he chose this name for the upcoming film because he wanted to popularise the Uttar Pradesh city.

“The media proofs that I incorporated in the film were all from Meerut. I named my earlier film 'Gangs Of Wasseypur' as it was my 'janmabhoomi' (birthplace). As a result of the film, just typing Wasseypur on Google shows information about it,” Quadri said at a promotional event of the film here.

“Then I wondered what should I do for my 'karmabhoomi' (workplace) Meerut as I had graduated from Meerut and the land has given me numerous other things. That's why I decided to name it 'Meeruthiya Gangsters' so that Meerut gets popularised and people know about this place,” he added.

Quadri co-wrote the script of “Gangs Of Wasseypur” and played the role of Definite in Anurag Kashayap's two-part directorial.

Talking about “Meeruthiya Gangsters”, which is slated to release on September 18, he said: "Most of the incidents are taken from newspaper cuttings and other numerous real-life incidents.

"With 'Gangs Of Wasseypur', I attempted to showcase a new world and surprised Anurag sir, while he surprised the audience by making the film. So this time, I've again tried to surprise the audience by writing and directing this film. I can assure the audiences will be fascinated with this new world of quirky characters," Quadri added.

“Meeruthiya Gangsters” is his debut film as a director, but neither the casting process nor the shooting was a challenge for him.

“Casting for characters is not difficult when you have skilled actors with you. The job of the actor is to get into the character. During casting, gradually I got the suitable actors according to script needs,” Quadri said.

"The most exciting part is that there were no difficulties while shooting for the film. All the actors were already friends... when Sanjay Mishra sir comes on set, a different kind of energy comes up.

"Generally with actors like Sanjay Mishra, Brijendra Kala and Mukul Dev, a director might get tense about handling them, but nothing of that sort happened with me. In fact, when they came on set, they were very normal and it was an enjoyable shoot," he added.

“Meeruthiya Gangsters”, produced by Prateek Entertainment, also stars Jaideep Ahlawat and Nushrat Bharucha among others.

Megastar Chiranjeevi has not shelved his highly-anticipated 150th film.

He has in fact, shifted all his focus on the project, which is expected to go on floors later this year, a source said.

A film tentatively titled "Auto Johnny" was announced as Chiranjeevi's 150th film a few months ago. It was to be directed by Puri Jagannadh.

"It's not true that Chiranjeevi sir has ditched the project. He didn't like the second half of the film that was announced with director Puri Jagannadh; hence it has been put on hold. But he's listening to few scripts now and is likely to zero in on a project soon," a source close to the actor told IANS.

Among a few directors who are likely to team up with Chiranjeevi, "Tagore" fame V.V. Vinayak is the front-runner.

"It's true that Vinayak met Chiranjeevi sir recently. It was just a courtesy meeting in which they discussed a story idea as well. They've been in touch since then but since Vinayak is busy with a film with Akhil, it might take a while," he said.

Chiranjeevi's actor-son Ram Charan will be producing this project.

The source also confirmed that there won't any special announcement regarding the 150th project on Chiranjeevi's 60th birthday on Saturday.

'Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee' to be adapted into play

After the success of the theatrical adaptation of Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan-starrer "Hamari Adhuri Kahani", veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has zeroed in on another of his films "Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee" to be adapted into a play.

The 1993 film, which starred Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Roy, is known to be Mahesh’s second cinematic exploration of his relationship with late actress Parveen Babi, after “Arth”.

“Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee” delved into Parveen’s mental illness and the push-pull of her and Mahesh's relationship.

A director for the play is yet to be finalised, but actor Imran Zahid, who has starred in theatrical adaptations of Mahesh's films "Arth", "Daddy" and "Hamari Adhuri Kahani", will be seen as the lead actor in the stage version of "Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee".

“Apart from Zahid, the other characters haven't been finalised yet. We're looking for a committed director with a living mind and heart," Mahesh said, and added that music is going to be a key in the play.

Imran, who is fascinated by Mahesh's autobiographical cinema, said: "This role is very special for me. Bhatt sahab has left direction, but to portray a character from one of his classics fills me with nostalgia. It's a dream come true."

The play is scheduled to premiere in Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities in October.

For Mahesh, "Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee" is a special movie and close to his heart.

“There was a time when my friend Johny Bakshi asked me if I could do a film for him as he was going through tough times in his career. 'Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee' is a movie totally inspired by my own life. Those days when the movie was made, were the most difficult moments of my life.

“Parveen had a mental breakdown and she was going and coming back into my life. I untangled all the broken threads of my heart and expressed my love and grief through the movie.

"The lines which were told in the climax in the movie were the lines which were actually told in real life when Parveen died. I vouch my gratitude to the actress and I owe the success of my films to her," he added.

Professionalism in foreign filmdom is impeccable: Satish Kaushik

$

He got a taste of the working style in foreign filmdom when he featured in British film “Brick Lane” in 2007. While Bollywood actor-filmmaker Satish Kaushik believes the level of professionalism abroad is impeccable, he feels Indian cinema is walking the path slowly and steadily.

"The west is impeccable when it comes to professionalism for sure, but Bollywood too is adapting the trait," Satish, who will be seen in “Sumit Sambhal Lega”, an Indian adaptation of American TV show “Everybody Loves Raymond", told IANS in an interview.

“I am happy that things are improving in our industry... the professional attitude is coming out in terms of shooting and planning,” added the actor, who has essayed memorable roles like Calendar of "Mr. India" and Pappu Pager of "Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin".

Having worn a director's hat for “Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja” and “Tere Naam”, having been in the producer's shoes with “Darna Zaroori Hai”, and having acted in several movies, Satish shared that research and rehearsals are now stressed upon in the movie and TV industry here.

“The kind of research, reading, rehearsals and the discussions which go into the movies before shooting the film, is very interesting. You take your time, do a lot of rehearsals... you don't have to hurry up. The best thing is the level of professionalism for sure... even in 'Sumit Sambhal Lega', we underwent the same treatment,” he added.

In fact, it is because Satish found the team of "Sumit Sambhal Lega""very professional" that he took on a role in the Star Plus show, which will go on air on August 31.

"I also found the show interesting. Firstly, it is based on an English show which was already very popular. Secondly, Star Plus is a popular channel, and (thirdly), because it is an official adaptation.

"The American writers of the show also came here, did workshops and rehearsals with us and the whole show has been shot before it comes on air. That allows you to do more concentrated work... which is why I accepted the show,” he said.

Whether it is films or TV shows in the fiction and reality space -- adaptations have become a trend. Satish says it's valid and "good".

"The shows that are adapted have stories which are universally understood... thus they have more possibility of working here. For example, “24”... its adaptation worked here,” he said, referring to the Anil Kapoor show, which became a success in India.

“Adaptations happen all over the world. Sometimes you get original ideas, sometimes you get inspired. We do have original stories too... the source can be anything, could be a book too, a remake either and since they are made all over the world, why not make it here too,” Satish said.

He brought a giant yet compassionate robot alive on the big screen with “Big Hero 6” with animation. Zach Parrish, head animation supervisor of the Oscar-winning movie, says while he loves the “broad spectacle” of Hindi films, working on a Bollywood animated film will be a challenge.

“I know a little bit about Indian films, mainly Bollywood. I love them because of their music, theatrics and the broad spectacle.

“I have never really thought about working on a Bollywood animated movie, but that would be an interesting challenge,” Parrish told IANS in an interview after a signing session at D23 Expo 2015 in Anaheim here.

Parrish has also worked on movies like “Tangled” and “Wreck-It Ralph”, and feels the world of animation-based entertainment is poised for growth globally.

“It is exciting time for animation industry because so many people are trying to make animated films and there are so many people successfully making animated films.

“And that is pushing the style and the scope of films as the bar keeps getting raised which challenges us as an artist to get bigger and better,” he said.

At the D23 Expo, which was held at Anaheim Convention Center, Parrish was approached by "Big Hero 6" fans to sign a toy version of the film's robot Baymax.

Javed, Shabana attend seminar on Kaifi Az

Film lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar on Wednesday said that despite the political and economic shifts in India, his late father-in-law and poet Kaifi Azmi retained his idealism and remained optimistic of a socialist future for the country.

Kaifi's optimism was reflected in poetry replete with dreams of a socialist egalitarian society in which the voice of another fellow human being would be heard like a resonating sound of one's self, he added.

Javed was delivering the inaugural address at a National Seminar on 'Kaifi Azmi: A Life in Creative Pursuits' at the Kennedy Auditorium of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

The seminar, which was presided over by AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. General Zameer Uddin Shah (Retd), was organised by the institute in collaboration with the Sahitya Academy, New Delhi.

Javed said that today market forces and globalisation may have made society more selfish and self-centred, but no human society can thrive if it fails to heed the call for justice to all sections, especially the marginalised, poor and downtrodden.

Akhtar said that Kaifi Azmi was a torchbearer for all these values which were manifested in the spirit of the Progressive Writers' Movement of the 1930s. He said that the man, who ultimately became his father-in-law, was his true mentor and from him he had imbibed the values which taught him the importance of the "right to dissent" and the "right to freedom of speech".

He said that it was sad that in today's world when a person speaks out against "injustice" committed by society, most people tend to dismiss such utterances as "propaganda".

Shabana too remembered her father as a person who was very different from other fathers. She said that she was a 'different' daughter of a 'different' father.

"In fact, I displayed it with such newfound confidence that instead of being sniggered at by my classmates, I became an object of envy," she said.

The actress said he taught her two fundamentals of life.

The first lesson which Kaifi gave to his daughter was "in whatever field you are, even if it is a humble vocation, try to be the best". The second lesson was "never shy away from speaking the truth even if the tide is going against you".

Delivering the keynote address at the seminar, Irtiza Kareem, director, National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, New Delhi, said that like other famous poets, Kaifi Azmi began as a ghazal writer, cramming his poetry with the repeated themes of love and romance in a style that was replete with cliches and metaphors. However, his association with the Progressive Writers' Movement and Communist Party made him embark on the path of social discourse.

"Kaifi's poetry continues to influence generations for passionate espousal of causes. His poems celebrate love, compassion and human equality. The lyrical beauty and powerful expression of his film songs have captivated millions," he said.

National Award winning musician Amit Trivedi, who has composed for films like "Dev D", "Wake Up Sid", "Udaan" and "Queen", says that he loves performing live as it gives him a chance to connect with audience.

Trivedi performed during a musical concert that was a part of Close Up First Move Party on Wednesday. The event witnessed college goers from across the city coming together for the "coolest party" of the year at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

"I had an amazing time performing in Delhi. I love performing live as it gives you a chance to connect with the audience. Particularly today, the energy was electrifying. I went to some experience zones at the Closeup First Move Party and had a blast. Closeup really does give you the confidence to get closer. I'm glad that through my performance and choice of songs, many people made their first move," Trivedi said in a statement.

He played some of his best tracks and made the audience swoon as VJ Yudi (Yuuthistar) and VJ Bani played witty hosts for the evening and encouraged everyone at the party to make their first move. The Closeup First Move Party also had a set of experience zones to help college goers make their best first move.

At "Brush Up Your First Move Skills", students had to perform the task of brushing with Closeup, with a twist. Some students used the art of head-banging while brushing and others struck a pose with their partner and a toothbrush, replicating popular movie posters.

The Delhi High Court on Friday stayed the television premiere of Hindi film "Grand Masti" holding that movie was not certified for unrestricted public exhibition.

A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath said that the film cannot be televised under the Cable Network Regulation Act and also sought the central government's and censor board's response on a plea seeking quashing of the U/A certification given to the movie.

It posted the matter for September 16.

Starring Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani, "Grand Masti" is an adult-comedy directed by Indra Kumar and was to be shown on television on Saturday.

The court was hearing a plea filed by Edara Gopi Chand, through advocate Gaurav Bansal, seeking stay on the telecast of the movie on television contending that it was replete with double meaning dialogues and highly objectionable content.

Its TV telecast will adversely affect the rights and interest of hundreds of thousands of minors in the country, especially children and adolescents, it added.
