Your marks not your destiny: Rajkummar Rao

He never scored 90 percent or above in his school days, but that didn't deter Rajkummar Rao from finding success. The critically acclaimed actor believes scores in school not necessarily decide one's future.

Just days after the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) declared the Class 10 (ICSE) and Class 12 (ISC) 2015 results, Rajkummar said: "Your marks are not your destiny. There is no correlation between your marks today and what you become in life tomorrow. So, don't lose heart and celebrate each day."

The "Queen" actor, who graduated from the Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College in Delhi, strongly believes that marks are not the end of one's life. And that his life can be an example for all those who have not fared good scores as they expected to achieve.

A National Award winner for his performance in the film "Shahid", Rajkummar feels that teenagers today should pick what they like as a career opportunity and then work for it passionately -- just as he did.

On the work front, the actor recently wrapped up the shoot for Hansal Mehta's next titled "Aligarh" and will be next seen in Mohit Suri's "Hamari Adhuri Kahani".

I'll wear stilletos in Cannes, jokes designer Aki Narula

Following the high heels row at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival, popular Indian fashion designer, stylist and costume designer Aki Narula has joked that if he gets a chance to attend the gala, he'd love to slip into a pair of stilettos.

Some women were reportedly turned away from a film premiere for not wearing high heels at the extravaganza, happening at the French Riviera since May 13.

“When I go to Cannes, I am going to wear stilettos,” Narula, who has styled Bollywood stars like Kareena Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, joked about the incident.

“I love high heels. It's sexy, it gives certain body language to the wearer... the whole garment changes. Personally, I am in a big favour of high heels as opposed to flats, but I don’t agree with the judgement that has just come up with at Cannes,” the fashion designer, who was in the capital for the launch of ‘Disney by Anouk’ collection on Thursday, told IANS.

Soon after the news of the high heel issue surfaced, the festival's organisers said there was no such "rule" for the red carpet.

Narula was all praise for Indian faces like Sonam Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who walked on the red carpet at Cannes as L'Oreal Paris brand ambassadors.

“I think our girls did very well this time. I was very happy with Aishwarya and Sonam. Aishwarya was bang on this time. She was fantastic,” said Narula.

He also said that it is not necessary for Indian celebrities to don the six-yard wonder at international platforms.

“Most importantly, you are representing yourself. If people from Japan attend international events, they don’t wear kimonos there. I think people here are just pushing it too hard on why aren’t people wearing saris or why aren’t people wearing Indian fabrics.

“You just have to be true and honest to yourself...what looks great on your body... you need to look comfortable, you need to look sexy, you need to talk about your personality. It shouldn’t be ‘Oh beautiful gown’, but doesn’t look right on the person,” he said.

How 'Zaroori tha' became vital for 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani'?

It was the portrayal of love and longing in Pakistani qawwali maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's song "Zaroori tha" that made director Mohit Suri incorporate it in his forthcoming film “Hamari Adhuri Kahani”.

"Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's 'Zaroori tha' is a fantastic song and I was deeply moved when I heard the song. It has so much romance, pain and love that I was touched. I am thrilled that the song is part of 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani',” Suri said in a statement.

The film revolves around a love triangle between Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi and Rajkummar Rao. It touches upon society's issues, especially a husband treating his wife as his property.

Suri hopes that the song is well-received by the audience.

“It has been picturised on Emraan and Vidya and the pain that they go through in love. The song just fits the theme of the film and I hope people will connect to it as much as I connected to the song,” he added.

The film is about the struggle that Vidya faces as she falls in love with Emraan after her husband (played by Rajkummar) disappears without a trace for several years before coming back into her life again.

Suri felt that the song captures the pain and longing that Emraan and Vidya's character feel for each other as they want to be united, but can't because of societal norms and values that are dug deep into their heart and mind, read a statement.

Presented by Fox Star Studios and produced by Vishesh Films, “Hamari Adhuri Kahani” releases on June 12.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, whose film "Sooryavansham" has completed 16 years since its release, feels the movie has a personal connect with many.

The film is a 1999 drama that revolves around a man who defies his father's wish and marries a woman, following which he struggles to make a living.

“Sooryavansham” is the Hindi remake of the 1997 Tamil film "Suryavamsam", which stars Sarath Kumar and Devayani.

"SOORYAVANSHAM...16 years... many still watch this film repeatedly...it has a personal connect with many," the 72-year-old actor tweeted.

Taking to his blog to write about the movie, he posted: "It was a remake of a Tamil film that ran most successfully - the Tamil film - and carried a great challenge for the artist involved and for the makers in Hindi."

'Surkhaab' - flight of the reluctant immigrant (IANS Movie Review, Rating - **)

$
0
0

Film: "Surkhaab"; Cast: Barkha Madan, Nishant Bahl, Vineeta Mallik, Sumeet Suri, Kanza Feris and Naresh Gosain; Director: Sanjay Talreja; Rating: **

Surkhaab, the beautiful migratory bird that's found in Punjab is used as a metaphor in this film, and the title song "Des mera pardes hua" with the lyrics "Sone di chidiya sapne dikhavea", encapsulates its essence brilliantly.

Narrated in a non-linear manner, the plot revolves around Jeet Kaur (Barkha Madan), a state-level Judo champion, who goes to Canada to meet her brother Pargat (Nishant Bahl), whom she has not seen for eight years. The film is her journey.

The tale begins with a promise, and what starts off as a simple story of a sister meeting her brother, gradually gets complicated with human foibles that unfurl at regular intervals.

The plot explores the real life challenges and obstacles faced by a reluctant undocumented immigrant, trying to find a foot space in one of the most sought after countries, Canada.

While Sanjay Talreja is a sound director and the story is convincing, his writing lacks depth. With one-dimensional characters and forced plot oints, the script is plagued by an amateurish attempt to present the film as a thriller.

Barkha Madan, who is also the producer of this film, plays the lead Jeet Kaur. She is convincing as an actor. But due to the lack of depth in the writing, her character is reduced to a caricature. While she plays the fearless girl living in an orthodox community to perfection, she falters as the simpleton caught up in a vicious plan of the scheming middle-men involved in the immigration racket.

Sumit Suri as the persuasive Kuldeep, the antagonist and the nephew of the hustler Balbir, is realistic. He has a typical demeanour which is charismatic in a peculiar manner. Similarly, Nishant Bahl as Jeet's brother Pargat is charming. He has a raw appeal and depicts the brotherly affection credibly. Naresh Gosain as Balbir and Vineeta Mallik as Jeet's mother are very stereotypical and matter-of-fact.

On the technical front, shot in Punjab and Canada with a limited budget, the production values of the film are good. The visuals by cinematographer Benjamin Lichty have a fresh approach. He captures rustic Punjab and urbane Canada skillfully. And Archit D. Rastogi's editing puts things in the right perspective. With fine intercuts, the scenes mesh well into the narration.

The title song and the background score by Toronto-based composer Anuj Rastogi is enchanting and it elevates the viewing experience.

Released under the PVR Director's Rare banner, the film is an eye-opener for those who feel that the grass is greener on the other side.

The singer, who has spread love and ignited romance with his music through songs like "Tum hi ho", "Muskurane" and "Hamari adhuri kahani", has given his voice to a song titled "Suiyaan".

The director is excited to have him on board and believes that Arijit will add a "golden" touch to the film's music.

Not easy to make smaller films after working with stars: Venkat Prabhu

$
0
0

Filmmaker Venkat Prabhu, who is known for introducing Tamil cinema to independent projects like "Chennai 600028" and "Saroja", says making such films becomes challenging as soon as one starts working with stars on big ticket outings.

Prabhu's career's biggest hit is "Mankatha" with actor Ajith Kumar.

"Post 'Mankatha', all the projects that were offered to me were requested to be only made with a certain star. Of course, all the producers give me creative freedom, but I don't think if they'd want me to do something along the lines of 'Chennai 600028'," Prabhu told IANS.

"Most producers come to me with an offer to make a film with Ajith or Vijay. It's not that I don't want to work with stars. I'd love to work with Vijay soon," he said, and added that a director like him can make the kind of film they want when they produce it on their own.

Prabhu's next directorial is "Masss", featuring Suriya. The film is slated for release on May 29.

On successfully jumping from making low-budget films to star vehicles, Prabhu said: "There's a lot of responsibility while working with a star. There's also some degree of fear because expectations are very high. Star-centric project means high budget and the star's image will ride on my shoulders. So, I have to ensure their image doesn't get tampered because of a bad film.

"If a smaller film doesn't do well, it'll only affect me and I usually take it in my stride. In the case of my movie Goa, its failure mostly affected me and I took full responsibility of it."

Working with a star also comes with some benefits and Prabhu admits it.

"It's definitely a big burden to shoulder a film featuring a star. On the flip side, you're paid more on such projects. I wouldn't get paid as much as I'm paid now when I work with a smaller team because when no star is involved, the market value of a project comes down," he said.

"If I make a small film, I can only make it on a tighter budget and can bring audiences solely based on the credibility I've built with my work. When I work with a star, the budget becomes bigger and this allows me to achieve what I had planned initially. If I made 'Masss' with my regular team, I'm sure it wouldn't have been as big as it is now in terms of production value, budget and even cast," he added.

He looks at it as a "blessing in disguise".
