'Margarita With A Straw' truly for Indian audience: Shonali Bose

$

Kalki Koechlin-starrer "Margarita With A Straw" may come across as an offbeat film, one which has traversed to different movie festivals, but filmmaker Shonali Bose says it’s a typical Bollywood commercial film with songs.

Bose recalls having told producers Viacom18 Motion Pictures: "Why are you sending this film to the festivals?"

But then when the movie garnered some awards, she was clear she didn't want the accolades to be flashed on the film's poster before its commercial releases as "people will feel it's an arthouse film and boring".

"I want to say it’s a Bollywood film and also has five songs in it. I have made this film for Indian audience," Bose said of the film, which released in theatres on Friday.

Kalki plays a girl with cerebral palsy in the movie, which talks about her struggle with the normal activities in her life.

Bose has taken care of not showing the "problems of disability".

"One important thing of the film is you will forget that she is in a wheel chair," said the filmmaker, whose movie also features Revathi and Sayani Gupta.

While marketing and promotions have become an inseperable part of filmmaking, Bose admits a movie like "Margarita With A Straw" needed it all the more "because there is no star".

"The film has released in 250 screens, but for the numbers, people should know there is such a film coming up,” the 49-year-old said.

She knew it from the beginning that while there is scope for the movie to earn an audience via word of mouth, the film won't get a strong opening.

Bose says Kalki was always the first and only choice for the lead role because of her endearing smile and willingness to work hard.

"She did the auditions for three to four months, and I had also told her she can't do any other commercials or other films. When she did 'Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani', we had to move on and we started auditioning other actors. But something was missing in them and they could not give the commitment."

"Then I called Kalki and said we will wait for you for three months,” she added.

Vir Das set for 'Unbelievablish' comic journey

Stand up comedian-actor Vir Das will travel across 11 Indian cities, including Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Bengaluru and Jaipur for his Unbelievablish show starting on April 19 in Kochi.

Unbelievablish is written and performed by Vir, who narrates stories from his life in it. However, they may or may not be true. It is for the audience to decide what is true and what’s not. An attraction will be that if you guess the true or false sequence of his stories, then you get a refund of your ticket.

“My concept for the show is very simple and interactive. I wanted to do something interesting where I could move away from a straight jacketed stand up show and get the audiences completely involved in it.

"Thus, through the course of the show, when they are not in splits, there is a continuous True/False meter ticking in their minds while identifying with my act and continuously evaluating them,” Vir said in a statement.

“Also what makes this show really special for me is that for the first time I am embarking on such an ambitious 11 city tour across the country hoping that people unbelievably believe in me and keep the spirits going,” he added.

The actor, who has featured in movies like “Delhi Belly” and “Go Goa Gone”, is also working on “Mastizaade”.

Sanjeev Bijli, joint managing director, PVR Group, vouches for the fact that the movie is a "brilliant piece of work".

Happy with girl-next-door tag: Sri Divya

Actress Sri Divya, who has mostly featured in simple, girl-next-door roles in her career in southern cinema so far, says she doesn't mind the tag as it suits her personality.

"I feel my innocent personality is most suitable for girl-next-door roles. This is why I'm mostly offered these soft roles. But I'm happy with the tag I've earned," Sri Divya told IANS.

Having made her cinematic debut in Telugu industry in 2010 film "Manasara", Divya went on to be a hit heroine in Tamil filmdom in the last few years.

"People think I've avoided the Telugu industry since I became successful in Tamil. But that's not true. The only reason is that Tamil cinema gave me better roles," she said.

Some of her best Tamil films include "Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam", "Vellaikaara Durai" and "Kaaki Sattai".

"My latest Telugu film 'Vaaradhi' has released. It's another girl-next-door role, but here I perform subtly. These are some minor differences I look forward to in the roles that I'm offered," she added.

In Tamil too, Divya says she hasn't accepted every role that has come her way.

"Recently, I turned down an offer opposite a big star because a song expected me to be very glamorous. I wasn't comfortable doing it," she said.

With a busy year ahead, Divya has Tamil films such as "Pencil", "Eetti", the remake of "Bangalore Days" and a yet-untitled project with actor Karthi.

May make more films in sync sound: Mani Ratnam

Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam enjoyed making his latest Tamil outing "O Kadhal Kanmani" in sync sound so much that he plans to make more movies using the same technique.

Sync sound refers to sound recorded at the time of filming a movie.

"I thoroughly enjoyed shooting the film in sync sound. It breathes life into a film, especially with artistes who speak the language in which you're making the film. The experience was so good that I'm thinking of making more films in sync sound," Mani Ratnam told IANS.

"O Kadhal Kanmani", which features Dulquer Salmaan and Nitya Menen in the lead, was completely shot in sync sound, and Ratnam admits that more effort needs to be put in while working with it.

"To shoot in sync sound, you need to have a controlled environment. You need to take the effort to make it work. But one shouldn't mind because the output is beyond satisfactory," he said.

In the past, Indian films such as "Lagaan", "Dil Chahta Hai" and "Rock On!!" were shot using sync sound.

Looks count more than talent in India, says Marzi Pestonji

$

Ace choreographer Shiamak Davar’s former students like Shahid Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput are now among sought-after Bollywood actors. But Marzi Pestonji, who assists Davar, is in no mood to join the league as he believes “good looks” come first in Indian showbiz.

Pestonji has been associated with Davar for almost two decades. Asked if he would follow in their footsteps, Pestonji told IANS: “Do I look like an actor? Do you want a film to flop before it releases? In India, talent is not that great (a factor). You don’t need to have talent. You need to have good looks first. It’s not happening with me."

“I’ve accepted it and I’m happy about it. Acting is not happening. Besides, you need to learn up so many words in one time and speak... not possible,” added the former “Dance India Dance” judge.

Hence, he is content making small screen appearance as judge on dance based shows.

“I’am happy doing this. I don’t want more,” said the choreographer, who will co-judge Star Plus' upcoming dance reality show “Nach Baliye 7” with actress Preity Zinta and author Chetan Bhagat.

How is it teaming up with them?

“It’s been awesome because I know Preity for a long time. I’ve known her because we have done work together. I work for Shiamak, so I’ve done a lot of award shows with her and also tours. Chetan, I don’t know. I’ve heard of him. This is the first time we are meeting,” he said.

What about his approach towards judging the celebrity contestants?

“My approach might be a little different because they are not that great dancers. They are celebrity couples. Keeping that in mind, my approach will be little different towards judging them. I think I will be more strict so that I can take out the best in them,” said Pestonji, who will be assisting Davar on “Jagga Jasoos”.

The jazz and contemporary dance expert says he is involved in “everything” that Davar does and has no interest in doing individual project.

“I’m not adventurous. I’m not ambitious. I’ve been with Shiamak for almost 20 years. It’s been a long time to say that 'Now, I want to do something of my own'. He has done the hard work. I’ve had the fruit of his hard work,” he said.

“I teach dance. That’s my priority. All the knowledge that you have, if you don’t impart to others, what’s the point of having it? I like to give back. So that takes a lot of time. ‘Nach Baliye’ is just one day in a week, so that’s nice. Had it been every day... impossible. I wouldn’t have taken up the project,” he added.

The Commerce graduate also notes that “dance has got more credibility now”.

“Earlier dancers were looked down upon. When I started off in 1992-1993, my family also asked me if I was sure about it. But my father told me to finish my graduation first,” he said.

“Then in 1997, ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ (choreographed by Davar) came. That changed the perception of dancers in the industry and dance also. Dance started getting more respect. Today, dance can be a career and you can earn good money,” he added.

The release date of filmmaker Faisal Saif's comedy spoof "Main Hoon (Part-Time) Killer", earlier titled "Main Hoon Rajinikanth", has been pushed forward from April 24 to a new date, which is yet to be locked.

It is the same movie against the release of which superstar Rajinikanth had petitioned the Madras High Court for a stay last year, as he had felt the entertainer might defame him and upset his large fan base.

Now, the Madras High Court is said to have instructed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to recensor the film and issue a new certificate the makers in 10 days.

The film's director says, "the scenes in which there were 'direct' references to superstar Rajinikanth or his family were asked to be chopped off".

"I didn't have any problems or issues on it because I had promised I will not hurt the superstar anymore. After deleting those objectionable scenes, my film still looks the same... the idea is the same to make people laugh and entertain," Saif told IANS.

"We were planning to release the film on April 24 but we have now pushed it a little further. We are fully preparing ourselves for mid-May release," he added.

The film stars Adithya Menon, Kavita Radheshyam, Smita Gondkar, Sunil Pal, Ganesh Yadav, Reema Lagoo and Shakti Kapoor.

Glimpse silence of 'Nirbaak' through hand shadowgraphy

$

0

Known for out-of-the-box thinking, national award winner Srijit Mukherji has used the rare art of hand shadowgraphy in the trailer for his forthcoming film "Nirbaak" (Speechless) for a poignant narration of the movie's four stories solely through the fluid movements of hands and fingers.

Scripted and performed by the duo of Amar and Sabyasachi Sen, the three-and-a-half minute hand shadowgraphy (HSG) titles video is a silent rendition of four love stories connected by a single woman - the character played by former Miss Universe and actress Sushmita Sen.

"In each of the four love stories, one character is speechless. There is a tree, a corpse, a dog and a mirror depicted in the video through HSG. The element of love is shown through a throbbing heart, all created by the movement of fingers and hands," Amar told IANS.

'Hand shadowgraphy' or 'cinema in silhouette' as coined by the two Sens, is the art of creating shadows using only hands and fingers against a blank screen against a light source.

From depicting animals to silhouettes of monuments to personalities including Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela, the two can project anything with their hand movements.

The Sens have to their credit the very eye-catching Madhya Pradesh tourism campaign ad - 'MP Ajab hai, sabse Gazab hai' - based totally on hand shadowgraphy, as well as the popular 'Let Calcutta Surprise You' campaign.

Both videos have received millions of hits on Youtube.

For "Nirbaak", Amar explains, icons of Kolkata such as the Victoria Memorial and the Howrah Bridge have been staged via HSG and added to the background through computer layering.

Shadows of a tree sprouting leaves and branches, a character on a park bench, a man hunched over a dead body in a morgue, a dog wandering against the city backdrop and a figure leaning against a mirror have been meticulously created by the Sens with the swish and flick of their bare hands.

The themes of the film are centred on lust, jealousy, affection and separation. "Nirbaak" is Sushmita's debut in Bengali cinema . The film also stars Jisshu Sengupta, actor-director Anjan Dutt and Ritwick Chakraborty.

"The last scene in the trailer is a combination of all the elements. The script was in accordance with Srijit's wishes and we are grateful that he was open to ideas," Amar said.

The Sens took to hand shadowgraphy in the 1960s, and after a lengthy self-taught process, conducted their first show at the Outram Club here in 1988.

In 1997, the duo performed internationally for the first time in Muscat, Oman and since then their reach has expanded to Jordan, the US, Germany and other countries.

The HSG trailer which has been highly appreciated by Sushmita in a recent tweet, though minimalistic in appeal, took a "lot of time" to perfect in contrast to its short run-time, admits Amar.

The enchanting audio-visual is set to a soulful rhythm by Neel Dutt (the film's music composer) and put together by Arko Sen and Kumar Chitrang. The film releases on May 1.

Despite the video grabbing over one lakh hits and the duo receiving several awards internationally, Amar, however, lamented the dearth of respect for the artists' efforts.

"People fail to understand the depth and intricacy of the art since they can't see the technicalities that go into making it," he added.

Debutant director Rajesh, who is a long time associate of actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan and has worked with him in several of his films over the years, has been handed over the reins of the latter's next Tamil outing.

Tentatively titled "Ore Iravu", the film's story is said to unfold in a single night.

"Kamal had originally planned to direct this project, but he has now asked his most trusted associate Rajesh to helm it. Both have worked in films such as 'Manmadhan Ambu', 'Vishwaroopam' and the forthcoming release 'Uttama Villain'," a source from the film's unit told IANS.

Written by Kamal, who will also play the lead, the film will be completely shot in Mauritius.

The source added that Trisha Krishnan is most likely to play the female lead.

"Kamal had discussed the story with Trisha recently. Apparently, she liked it and wished to be a part of the project. However, she's yet to sign on the dotted line," the source said.

The film is said to be a high-octane action-thriller and Kamal plans to rope in some of the best stunt choreographers in the world.

Ghibran has been roped in to compose the tunes, and this will be his fourth consecutive project with Kamal after "Vishwaroopam 2", "Papanasam" and "Uttama Villain".

An artist must express freely and fearlessly: 'Unfreedom' director

$
0
0

Joining issue with Indian censors for banning his controversial film "Unfreedom", director raj (ed: correct) Amit Kumar says "the most important social responsibility of an artist is to express freely and fearlessly".

"Do filmmakers make films to give away messages," asked Kumar during an interview with IANS. He is currently engaged in a court battle for the release of his film, banned in India for its controversial portrayal of religious fundamentalism and intolerance through two parallel stories.

Shifting between New York and New Delhi, one tale follows a Muslim terrorist who kidnaps a liberal Muslim scholar to silence him.

The other charts the travails of a young Hindu woman who resists an arranged marriage because she is secretly in love with another woman.

"The Indian censors said that my film has no message and hence it should not be certified. If I have to give messages, I will use cell phone, email, letters or Facebook," the director said.

"As far as I understand it, we create a certain experience and it is up to the audiences to find meanings in it," Kumar said, adding: "And, yes, we create a film experience hoping certain key thoughts and ideas are expressed through that experience."

"And, no, the experience does not get lost in two parallel narratives but is created because those two parallel narratives are together," he asserted.

"Like you are questioning, I am hoping audiences will also question why these two narratives are together and what they should make of relationships in two parallel narratives," Kumar said.

"Unfreedom" opens in US theatres on May 29. Simultaneously, Kumar is launching a crowd-funding campaign to finance a release in India via alternative methods.

Kumar also does not agree that juxtaposing religious fundamentalism with social intolerance is akin to comparing apples and oranges.

"Apples and oranges? Religious fundamentalism is social intolerance. I don't think I need to explain that. Look around you."

Asked if he had tried to balance Islamic fundamentalism with Hindu fundamentalism, Kumar said: "I am not a politician who has to play a balancing act to win votes."

"I am also not a filmmaker who wants to play a balancing act to win audience. I am saying through my film what needs to be said, and that is why they can't digest it."

"They are shocked by the fact how and why someone can make a film like this and how someone can have the courage to show them the mirror," Kumar said.

On depiction of nudity and religious symbolism in his portrayal of a lesbian relationship, Kumar asked: "I deal with questions of sexuality and I should stay away from depicting sex?

"I deal with relationship of religion and sexuality but I should stay away from depicting that symbolism? What world are we living in? Should we stop making films?

"Is Indian censorship telling us that through their method of censorship they have taught Indian filmmakers how to depict better than other countries?

"Or is it the other way around, where the censor board and its nonsense has come in the way of Indian filmmakers," Kumar said.

"Absurdity and hypocrisy have no limits," he quipped when asked about the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal's feeling that because of his film, communal passions will be ignited to disrupt public order.

He blamed "those who ignited communal passions on streets of India and ignited riots throughout the country and turned a secular nation to a highly volatile state with religious tensions".

That they "are today trying to say that a film will ignite communal passions and people will kill each other because they watch my film is bullshit of the fundamentalist order".

On the change of the film's title from its original "Blemished Light: Faces of Unfreedom", Kumar said: "The word 'Unfreedom' was always central to the film, and I felt it even more after censor's decision. As a title, 'Unfreedom' is also easier to communicate."

Asked why he did not agree to the cuts suggested by the censors given that "NH10" on the theme of honour killing was passed by them, he said: "I don't agree to cuts and in my opinion no filmmaker should. I am making the film, and not the censor board."

I’m hungry for roles: Lalu Alex

$

It's been over three decades since Lalu Alex began to don the grease paint, but the Malayalam actor says he still has "the fire in me and I’m certainly hungry for roles".

In his long cinematic career, he has featured in more than 300 films like "Ee Nadu", "Padheyam", "Chronic Bachelor" and "How Old Are You".

"I consider myself very fortunate that I have had such a long innings and I’m going ahead in the pace that I like. I still have the fire in me and I’m certainly hungry for roles, but I’m in no hurry," Alex told IANS.

Reflecting on his career, he said: "I will say with a lot of pride and gratitude, that I have come this far and wish to continue at my own pace with the blessings of the almighty."

On an average, he does less than 10 films a year and hence, has time at his disposal.

"I listen to music, watch films on TV, read a bit and the rest of the time I’m either in my garden or doing some farming activity, if not with a couple of my dear friends. I’m enjoying life at its best with my family of three children and my wife," said Alex.

He however, owes a lot to his 80-year-old ailing mother, who gave him all the support when he quit being a medical representative to turn a full-time actor.

About his contemporaries like superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal, he said that after a decade in the profession, he realised and accepted that they were too big.

"I realised that there is no need for me to compare with them as they were too big. I felt happy with that and I took solace in myself that being small is best for me," said Alex.

On his ambitions, he said that the desire to direct a film is there, but he has no patience. When it comes to turning a producer, he said that he wishes to produce a film, but for that to happen several things have to fall into place.

According to him, the director is always the captain, followed by the script writer and only then comes the actor.
