Cinema reflects society, society rarely reflects cinema: Kajol

Actress Kajol Wednesday attended a special session at the 15th edition of FICCI Frames 2014 and said it's unfair to say that one gets influenced by watching cinema.

The star of films like "Dushman" and "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge", was speaking on the ideas behind censorship guidelines.

"My kids are in front of the computer 24X7 despite having all the parental control. There is no way to stop the flow of information. The flow of information is too fast and too much. If you say one gets influenced watching a character, I think it's foolish. Cinema reflects society, society rarely reflects cinema," Kajol said.

She added: "Movie shows whatever happens in the society. For instance, if a hero smokes on the screen, it is because 90 percent of the country smokes and not the other way round. It's stupid to say one gets influenced by watching on the screen."

The session was organised in partnership with LA India Film Council.

Kajol shared the dais with filmmaker Sudhir Mishra; Rakesh Kumar, CEO, Central Board of Film Certification; Filmmaker and co-chair of FICCI Ramesh Sippy and Ravi Kottarakara, President, Film Federation of India.

Mishra spoke about the "No Smoking" disclaimer issue faced by the filmmakers and said: "Our only request is, do not put 'No Smoking' disclaimer on the frame. Put it before or after the scene because you are taking away that moment from the filmmaker."

Kajol said if a director has shot that particular scene, then with such disclaimer "you are cutting down the creativity of the director".

Rakesh responded to their complaint saying right now he cannot comment upon it as the matter is "sub-judice in the court".

However, when Kajol asked can one change the guidelines of the Censor Board, Sippy said: "We can try and bring changes in guidelines".

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, who is working on the dates for his next film "Madamji", starring Priyanka Chopra, laments that post the 2008 "Fashion", he couldn't work with her because of a lack of a "great subject".

Priyanka won the National Award for the best actress for her performance in "Fashion", which also starred Kangana Ranaut.

"Priyanka (Chopra) and I have been discussing the script. Priyanka is very excited about the subject of 'Madamji'. The film's subject is extraordinary. We always wanted to work together post 'Fashion', unfortunately we never came across a great subject," the filmmaker told reporters here in an interview Wednesday.

"Now we are working out on dates and logistics and if everything falls in place, then we will definitely make the film with her," he added.

"Madamji" is rumoured to be based on an item girl who turns politician. Bhandarkar's last film "Heroine" starred Kareena Kapoor.

Turning your nose up at second fiddle offers? Think twice!

$
0
0

Should an actor play second fiddle? Especially to a contemporary? For actors, deciding to play the second lead is a tough call as it could prove a risky proposition. But recent examples in Bollywood show that the risk sometimes pays off, resulting in greater glory.

Here’s how:

“Gulaab Gang”, “Queen”, “Raanjhanaa” and “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” – saw actresses Juhi Chawla, Lisa Haydon, Swara Bhaskar and Kalki Koechlin playing the second fiddle with aplomb.

In “Gulaab Gang”, audiences are appreciating Juhi’s diabolic avatar as much as they are lauding lead actress Madhuri Dixit for playing the feisty head of a women’s group.

Paradoxically, Juhi had turned down a role in “Dil To Pagal Hai” as she felt she should be in the same league with her arch rival Madhuri, who played the lead in the triangular love story that enjoyed record-breaking success at the box office in 1997.

But with time, Juhi’s mindset changed.

Therefore, when a similar offer came her way in the form of “Gulaab Gang”, she grabbed it and is now reaping the rich dividends.

The idea of playing second lead may not be appealing, but one shouldn’t be prejudiced while making a decision. It’s like a gamble, which can turn into a phenomenon.

Remember how Amitabh Bachchan played second fiddle to Rajesh Khanna in medical drama “Anand”? The film changed the course of Amitabh’s career – which, at that point, comprised a dozen damp squibs – and catapulted him into the big league and eventually turned him into the industry’s next superstar - after Rajesh Khanna.

Another living proof is Manoj Bajpayee. The actor witnessed overnight stardom with the release of 1998 crime thriller “Satya”. Director Ram Gopal Varma had pitted Manoj, then a newcomer, against the film’s lead actor D. Chakravarthy in a negative role, but the former hogged all the limelight for playing Bhiku Mhatre with aplomb, thus casting a shadow over the male lead.

Today, Manoj has carved a niche for himself as one of the most versatile actors in filmdom.

Having said that, actors are often seen buckling under less important second fiddle baggage, and losing out on meaty roles because they somehow get typecast.

So it’s not about whether it is a lead role or second lead. The moot point is whether the role is relevant to the script.

One can’t deny that people often come to theatres in hordes to watch big stars like Salman Khan or Hrithik Roshan or Deepika Padukone, but when the story unfolds in front of them, the way other actors’ characters are placed in the plot and how honestly they essay it, decides their fate.

“Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” was promoted as a Deepika-Ranbir Kapoor film, and even though they both did well, when the viewers actually saw the film, Kalki’s well-etched role and her performance wowed everyone. She was appreciated as much as her co-star Deepika.

Swara too stole the show in “Raanjhanaa”, while Lisa impressed in “Queen” despite the presence of talented and versatile Kangana Ranaut in the lead.

Examples there are a-plenty, and one can go on and on about them. But it’s heartening to watch cinema evolve to accommodate more versatility and create space for everyone to showcase their talent and find their place in the sun.

Being popular should not stop actors from choosing to play second fiddle. Don’t flinch from such roles; rather, grab them!

Will general elections disrupt the commerce of films?

$
0
0

With polling for the 16th Lok Sabha set to begin on April 7 and the process ending on May 16 with the declaration of results, the big question is: Will it affect the over $2 billion (about Rs.12 billion) film business? The likes of Aamir Khan and Anil Sharma foresee it happening while filmmakers like Subhash Ghai and Dasari Narayan Rao are optimistic about people still watching movies during the election process.

Actor-filmmaker-anchor Aamir, who has revealed the other side of his personality by bringing issues-based talk show "Satyamev Jayate" on television, told IANS: "Of course, elections will affect everything... The whole nation's attention is on the elections. Every Indian is concerned about what is happening and what is not happening."

The world's largest democratic exercise will involve a staggering 814 million voters.

"Everyone, including me, is interested in socio-political topics right now, so any other topic will not interest us at least till the elections are over," he added.

Referring to the poor show of his "Singh Saab The Great", which was released last November when assembly elections were being held in states like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, director Anil Sharma said: "Films will certainly get affected because elections will be every individual's priority ... the people's focus shifts towards politics."

"I have experienced this myself. When my film 'Singh Saab The Great' was released, elections were on in a few states like Madhya Pradesh and my film faced a huge problem in those states. The film hardly collected anything," he added.

Some noteworthy films ready to hit the screens around election time include David Dhawan's "Main Tera Hero", Nitesh Tiwari's Amitabh Bachchan-starrer "Bhootnath Returns", Subhash Ghai's "Kaanchi" and Abhishek Varman's "2 States".

The box office collections of these films might witness a dip, said Rajesh Thadani of distribution company Multimedia Combines.

"There will be a slight effect on the collections as, along with the elections, the IPL (Indian Premier League April 16-June 1) will also be going on. So, there will be a slight dent," Thadani told IANS.

However, there is hope of getting footfalls in theatres because elections also bring quite a few public holidays and people opt for recreational activities after casting their votes.

"During the elections, there is a lot of activity, which leads to extra holidays," film historian S.M.M. Ausaja said.

However, promotional activities on news channels could bear the brunt of the elections.

Ausaja agreed that the promotion of films on news channels will be tough, adding that come what may, good films will thrive.

"The entertainment channels will continue to promote films but the viewership will shift towards political news. However, if the film is good, it will run on merit. Promotions just help in getting a good opening for the film," he pointed out.

Thadani said: "The news channels will focus on elections...So, the promotions on news channels will be restricted."

But Ghai, whose "Kaanchi", a film on corruption, also releases around the same time, is confident of getting viewership.

"There is a set of people who love films and they are going to watch all films," Ghai said.

After the Hindi film industry, southern filmdom is extremely prolific and filmmaker Madhura Sreedhar is convinced the elections won't translate into a no-show.

According to the Election Commission of India, the 814 million people - almost the combined population of Russia, the US, Brazil and Bangladesh - who would be casting their votes is an increase of some 100 million from the 2009 elections - and a sharp rise from the 176 million of 1951 when newly independent India conducted its maiden Lok Sabha elections.

Of these, over 23 million are aged between 18 and 19 years, constituting 2.8 percent of the national electorate and Sreedhar is banking on them to boost the box office business.

"I don't think the elections will have much effect on the industry. Our core audiences are youth and if they make up their minds to watch a film, they'll go ahead and do it", said Sreedhar, who has helmed films like "Snehageetham" , "It's My Love Story" and "Backbench Student".

Filmmaker Dasari Narayana Rao said: "There might be a drop in the footfall in theatres on the various election days, but people won't stop going to cinema."

Nargis' Holi fashion tips: Quirky hairdo, comfy clothes

Are you worried about what to wear and how to look stylish on Holi? Try quirky and fun hairdos and wear a pair of shorts with a loose t-shirt, says actress Nargis Fakhri while sharing handy tips to make the festival glamorous and trendy.

"I like to style my tresses with some quirky and fun hairdos. If you love your bangs or fringes then put them on the side by tying the rest of your hair in a French braid or ponytail. You can also play with gem studded clips and bands," the actress told IANS.

Even though the actress has been blessed with a flawless skin and long locks, she said it is important to "condition the hair well before one starts playing Holi".

"It is very important to give your hair a protective coat before your hair comes into contact with harmful chemicals and colour. My 20-minute deep conditioning treatment with hot coconut based hair oil is a perfect way to lock in the moisture.

"It gives the necessary nourishment and protects my hair from harmful synthetic chemicals that the colours bring with them. Also, I make sure I keep myself hydrated by sipping a lot of fresh juices and coconut water to combat the heat," said the actress who won't be celebrating Holi this year because of work.

Nargis, who debuted in Bollywood with 2011 hit movie "Rockstar", will be seen in "Main Tera Hero.

Talking about the appropriate wardrobe to play with colours, she said that comfort should be the priority.

"I like to wear my most comfortable clothes. I wear a pair of shorts with a loose t-shirt or kurta. I mostly choose a light material like cotton, so that I don't feel stuffy in the heat," she said.

After playing Holi, it is also important to unwind.

Nargis unwinds by having a "hot water shower" followed by skin care.

"The first thing I do is take a long hot water shower after returning home. After I have showered, I moisturise my skin with natural ingredient based moisturiser to combat dryness caused by the colours.

"I prefer products that provide the goodness of natural ingredients and sunscreen benefits. A hot coconut based hair oil deep conditioning treatment for 20 minutes followed by steam helps me relax and also nourishes my hair after it has faced so many chemicals in the course of the day," said the actress who loves eating Gujjiya (a special Holi dish), lot of sweets and biryani on Holi.

Ajay is sexiest actor: Kajol

$

It's been 15 years since Kajol married Ajay Devgn, but she still finds him to be the "sexiest actor" in Bollywood, and says she craves to go on a romantic date with him as they don't get "enough" time.

During a tete-a-tete on her filmmaker friend Karan Johar's celebrity chat show "Koffee With Karan", Kajol spoke candidly about her changed fashion choices, choosy nature in picking films, about the new brigade of actors and of her loving husband.

Karan asked her - "Who is the sexiest actor in the movies? Objectively today?"

Pat came the reply: "My husband."

The filmmaker, who considers Kajol as his lucky charm and who has roped her in for all his movies so far, pulled her leg by saying: "I have a Kajol song - 'Bhala hai bura hai jaisa bhi hai mera pati mera devata hai...' (Whether he is good or bad, my husband is my god)"

Kajol retorted: "I am sorry it's got nothing (to do with that). ...I really find him the sexiest actor, I really like those dark brooding looks! It's got to do with my personal taste."

Ajay and Kajol have two children together - daughter Nyasa and son Yug.

Since both the actors lead busy lives, when Kajol was asked to name "a person from the film industry you would like to take on a romantic date", she said: "My husband!"

Justifying her response, Kajol said: "I don’t get enough time with him. I would really like to take him out for a romantic date."

Also, Karan asked her to rate a select few male actors on the basis of their talent and acting ability.

He gave Kajol a choice from Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Ajay, Ranbir Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan, but was quick to remove Ajay from the list as he said it would be a "no brainer" to know where he would be placed.

Kajol said: "To start with, to be very honest with you...I would really say Ranbir. I really think he is seriously fantastic. Secondly there is, I think Shah Rukh and Aamir are on par with each other. There is no up or down in that.

"Then we come to Salman and so on. Of course, but if Ajay was included in that list..."

The actress was accompanied by her cousin and director Ayan Mukerji on the show. The episode featuring them will be aired Sunday.

Sometimes I just want to put my head in my mom's lap: Poonam Pandey

Model-actress Poonam Pandey, who had a quiet 23rd birthday with her parents, was reportedly flooded with text messages and calls. The "Nasha" actress says sometimes she just wants to spend quality time with her mother and father.

She apparently received close to 2,000 text messages and nearly 500 calls wishing her all the best.

"I didn't expect anyone to even remember it was my birthday. I kept it very quiet. I am a little tired of all the attention. I am also exhausted by all the partying with friends," said Poonam, who celebrated her birthday March 11.

"This birthday I was just with my parents, that's all. There is a very good reason why I chose to be away from all the shor-sharaaba (noise) this birthday. It was my mom's wish that I spend the day with her and dad. She told me, 'Beta, baaki din toh kaam aur doston ke saath guzaarti ho. Aaj ka din mujhe dedo.' I couldn't say no. I didn't want to say no!"

"I did pooja with my mom in the morning. Then I went out for lunch with them. I realised how little time I get to spend with my family. My work takes me away all day. When I return home, it is late at night. They are asleep. I've forbidden them from staying awake for me. Sometimes I just want time to put my head in my mom's lap."

Being with her parents is what Poonam likes doing the most.

Poonam has signed a new film and moved into her large sprawling office in Andheri.

The film, one hears, is to be directed by Sameer Sharma whose debut last year in "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana" garnered encouraging reports.

When asked about the project, Poonam said: "I am not at liberty to talk about it yet. I think the producers want to make a big announcement. After my debut in 'Nasha', I was flooded with offers. To be honest, some of these scripts were so boring I fell asleep during narration. I wanted to make sure my second film took my movie career ahead."

As for the new swanky office that Poonam has gifted herself, she proudly explained, "I needed a place where I could meet producers, event managers and my professional contacts. I couldn't invite them home and I felt uncomfortable sitting in their offices. Now I feel at home even when I am at work."

Saif Ali Khan to face trial in NRI assault case

A court here Thursday framed charges against Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan and two others for assaulting an NRI in a five star hotel more than two years ago.

Saif and his friends, Bilal Amrohi and Shakeel Ladak, were charged with under sections 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 34 (acts done by several persons in futherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code by a metropolitan magistrate.

Present in the court, the trio pleaded not guilty to charges, setting the stage for the trial in the case.

The prosecution will present evidence against the three accused before the court at the next hearing scheduled April 30.

On Feb. 22, 2012, Saif was arrested by the Colaba police for assaulting the South Africa-based NRI buisnesman, Iqbal Sharma.

In his complaint, Sharma had said that he was dining along with his father-in-law Raman Patel in a restaurant in the hotel, where Saif and his friends were allegedly chatting loudly and creating a ruckus nearby. He said when he requested them to lower their decibel levels, they attacked him.

Sharma, then the deputy director-general of trade and investment in South Africa, was punched on the nose, leading to a fracture and his father-in-law was also hit.

Also present during the brawl in the hotel were actresses Kareena Kapoor, Karishma Kapoor, Malaika Arora-Khan, Amrita Arora and others.

Saif, who claimed that Sharma made a provocative statement in abusive language, was arrested and later released on bail.

Lisa Haydon: 'Queen' taught me to celebrate my uniqueness

$

Basking in the terrific response to her performance in "Queen", model-turned-actress Lisa Haydon says the success of "Queen" has helped her to enjoy her stay in filmdom.

Directed by Vikas Bahl, the film stars Kangana Ranaut in the lead role along with Rajkummar Rao and Lisa.

"Kangana and I have spoken about our karmic connection. We both did a film called 'Rascals' two years ago and we both felt like fish out of water. The film was an agonizing experience for both of us. And now we're both feeling a sense of triumph and euphoria after Queen. It's amazing," said Lisa, 27.

Lisa, who was also seen in "Aisha", admits she was tempted to call it quits after Rascals.

"I realized I was not cut out to be a conventional Bollywood heroine. After 'Rascals', I thought I was not going to last over here."

In that hour of despair came a glimmer of hope in the form of Vikas Bahl.

"It was god-sent. Vikas came in with the free-spirited Vijay Laxmi's part at a time when I had reached a deadend in my movie career. Doing item numbers in revealing clothes was not what I was cut out to do," she said.

She plays bohemian single mother Vijay Laxmi in "Queen" and said: "I didn't know such a character existed in Bollywood cinema. Vikas actually tailored the role to suit my personality. This is not to say that Vijay Laxmi wasn't interesting the way she was. She was a wild child, a single mother who drinks hard and swears hard. She is nothing like what audiences in our country expect our female characters to be."

And yet audiences have embraced Vijay Laxmi's other-ness wholeheartedly.

Lisa can't believe the adulation she is getting.

"I am currently doing city tours of 'Queen'. The film's popularity is growing by word-of-mouth, and so is the reach and appeal of Kangana and my character," said Lisa who makes no bones about the fact that the script has an author-backed role for Kangana.

Now Lisa is engrossed in gathering compliments from the debris of her nearly-shattered film career.

"I have to confess it feels good, specially when a girl came up to me and said, 'I thought only I was like that. Then I saw you in 'Queen' and I realised there was someone else exactly like me.' My God! That was an out-of-body moment."

Her Catholic family is not much into Hindi films. But they saw "Queen" and loved her performance.

"The thing is, my family is not fluent in Hindi. Neither am I. But I am working on my language. You'd be happy to know I've dubbed all my Hindi lines in my next film Akash Deep's 'Santa Banta' on my own. But to my family the Bollywood Hindi is pretty alien. So they saw 'Queen' with skepticism. To my surprise, they loved the film and my character. They went back again to see the film. That was the moment when I realised we had done something special in the film."

What Queen has given back to Lisa is her self-worth. "I felt I was a misfit in Bollywood. I couldn't connect with the things that I was required to do. I felt my personality was too peculiar to blend in Bollywood. 'Queen' has taught me to celebrate my specialness, my uniqueness. Yeah, I am not like other Bollywood heroines. And I am comfortable with that now."

She pledges not to do any role that doesn't connect with her personality. "After 'Queen', I need a role and a character that is equally special. I can wait for it to come. I am in no hurry."

Lisa looks back at her struggle in Bollywood with no bitterness.

"Struggle is a good thing. It helps you to appreciate the success and recognition when they come. I don't want anything to come easily to me."

What we hear is that when Kareena met Tamannaah she told her that she resembles her sister Karisma Kapoor a lot.

A source close to the team said, ‘Kareena and Tamannaah got along with each other very well and were seen spending time together for quite a while. And according to Kareena, Tamannaah looks a lot like Lolo aka Karisma Kapoor, because of the similar skin tones and their features.’

Well, we hope that Tamannaah and Kareena too bonded with each other like sisters!!

Humshakals stars Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Ram Kapoor, Tamannaah, Esha Gupta and Bipasha Basu

Humshakals is directed by Sajid Khan and is all set to release this 20th June!!

Actor Amit Sadh, who fell and fractured his right leg while shooting on location in Shimla for Subhash Kapoor's "Guddu Rangeela", says he would have to remain bed-ridden for three weeks.

"It is a routine fracture. I don't know how exactly it happened. I was shooting when I stumbled and slipped. Before I knew it, I felt an acute pain in my right leg," Amit said.

Amit flew back to Mumbai from Shimla and has been advised complete bed rest.

Wincing with pain, the actor said: "It's no big deal. I am used to pain of all kinds. In order to walk, one first needs to crawl and then stumble and fall. I am right now in that stage of my life where I am learning to walk. I don't mind the fall."

The "Kai Po Che" actor says recent times have been extremely eventful for him.

"The past year has been like a hurricane for me. Suddenly after years of struggle I finally stumbled on some success. And now just when I was enjoying that success, I fractured my leg. This is god's way of reminding me to keep my feet planted firmly on to earth."

The shooting of "Guddu Rangeela" remains cancelled until Amit is back on his feet.

Pointing out the positive, he said: "This is my chance to catch up on my sleep and reading."
