Director Kunal Deshmukh along with actors Emraan Hashmi and Humaima Malick unveiled the fourth song "Flip your collar" from their forthcoming film "Raja Natwarlal" here Wednesday, and said it will be the "Lungi dance" of 2014.

The song is choreographed by Remo D'Souza and Deshmukh was clear he wanted a number that matched up to the popularity and craze that Shah Rukh Khan's "Lungi dance" from "Chennai Express" generated.

"This was completely done by Remo D'Souza. Remo has got him (Emraan Hashmi) to dance, but when it comes to the tune, my brief to him (Remo) was that I want this year's 'Lungi dance'," Deshmukh said here Wednesday.

"If last year, it was 'Lungi dance', then this year has to be my song ('Flip your collar') and I think this is a great party track. When you listen to it you will feel like dancing," he added.

"Lungi dance" was composed and sung by singer-rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh and it topped the charts last year.

"Flip your collar" has Emraan and Humaima grooving with some awesome moves.

Emraan, who feels reluctant to dance on screen, has thanked Remo for giving him simple steps.

"I have become much better at dancing now. Remo has choreographed this song keeping my limitations at dancing in his mind," Emraan said.

"I thank him for the kind of steps that he has given me, which are simple, nice and (kind of) hip-hop," he added.

Slated to release Aug 29, "Raja Natwarlal" features Emraan as a small time crook who grows into a con man. It also features Paresh Rawal and Kay Kay Menon.

Textile and fashion designer Gaurang Shah will unveil his latest line Chitr-Sena amidst live music by renowned Hindustani classical singer Shubha Mudgal at the forthcoming Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Winter/Festive here Aug 22.

LFW will take place Aug 20-24.

"Chitr-Sena is like prose from Indian epics, wandering into the wild and exploring the future. The weaves in Kanchipuram bestow a daringly different twist in colours and textures. It took over six months to highlight the various textures in Kanchipuram, beautifully blended with hand-weaves, traditional designs and modern artistry," Shah said in a statement.

Chitr-Sena will have some unique colour twists which include the military colours like tantubha-yellow, zyama-blue, hasti-green, ayasa-grey and kasaya-brown combined with ahead-of-its-time colours like sutara-yellow, succhaya-pink, suka-green and uditi-orange.

"My design revives the art of korvai weaving of Kanchipuram, narrating stories of the wild, woven with modern day textures and colours. Each garment narrates a story from the Indian culture and mythology. It is akin to the oral tradition of storytelling, with weavers weaving stories onto cloth," he added.

The inclusion of classical music with fashion will add grace to the presentation and gel with the music of handweaves beautifully, said Mudgal.

"I look forward greatly to an absorbing fusion of enchanting vintage weave styles and Hindustani classical music and I'm delighted to be a part of this beautiful collaboration," she said.

Actor Emraan Hashmi has quashed reports that filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt is angry with him for giving preference to Kunal Deshmukh's "Raja Natwarlal" over his uncle's film "Mr. X".

It was reported that Emraan allotted some days for the promotion of "Raja Natwarlal" instead of shooting for "Mr. X" and it left Bhatt upset as his team wanted to wrap up the film with the actor soon.

"For selfish reasons, I am here to promote this film ('Raja Natwarlal') and they (Mahesh, Mukesh and Vikram Bhatt) have understood that. I thank them for that," Emraan told reporters here Wednesday at the launch of a song from his film "Raja Natwarlal".

"Although we are facing problems, we are trying to make amendments. We are trying to divide the schedules (between 'Raja Natwarlal' and 'Mr. X') to strike the balance.

"Vikram is making lot of amends to make sure that I promote for this film ('Raja Natwarlal') as well as shoot for that film ('Mr. X)," he added.

"Mr. X" is a supernatural thriller that features Emraan in a never-seen before avatar. Directed by Vikram Bhatt, produced by Mahesh Bhatt, the film is in the shooting phase.

Meanwhile, "Raja Natwarlal" that features Emraan has a conman, will release Aug 29. It also stars Paresh Rawal, Kay Kay Menon and Pakistani model-actress Humaima Malick.

Get silky straight hair sans straightener

Taming frizzy locks without a hair straightener can be tough, but it's not impossible. Using the right hair brush and a serum can help, suggests celebrity Hairstylist Asgar Saboo.

By using the following steps, you can achieve glossy, smooth and natural-looking straight hair. Also, as hair straightening can be damaging, it is advisable to utilise the five-step do-it-yourself guide:

* Use a high-quality bristle brush to detangle your hair, as these type of brushes evenly distribute the sebum (oil) from the scalp to the ends of the hair and will keep your locks looking shiny and frizz-less.

* Apply a heat serum to wet or towel-dried hair. Start with one pump of product and rub it into the palm of your hands before distributing it evenly. Avoid letting the product get near the roots, as this can make your hair look lank and greasy.

* Divide your hair in sections and clip them up. Blow dry each section going from root to tip, carefully pulling the round brush away from your head as you do so. It’s best to use your hair dryer at medium temperature settings to avoid drying out your hair.

* Once your hair is dry, clamp the straightening iron around your hair and gently smoothen each strand. Choose small strands for more effective results. It’s also best to use the straightener about an inch away from the roots to get a little bit of volume, advises the hair expert.

* Apply a shine-boosting serum to finish off the look.

English, Hinglish: Indian filmmakers get experimental

$
0
0

Director Homi Adajania is set to bring to the table "Finding Fanny", an English language film with a cast of desi actors. The experiment is not new, but it stands a testimony to how the multiplex culture is allowing filmmakers to try new ways of attracting youth, say distributors.

"Finding Fanny", starring Arjun Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, is a satirical movie which revolves around a journey of five "odd balls".

Indian movie distributors are confident that the film's release Sep 12 will open the doors for more filmmakers to come out with new themes and fresh concepts for a "target audience".

"The first look of 'Finding Fanny' is quite promising, and the script is looking really strong with dialogues in English. According to me, this movie will influence a large number of people," Delhi-based Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Arts, told IANS.

Of course, the Indian film world had seen movies like Aparna Sen's "36 Chowringhee Lane" and Dev Benegal's "English, August"; it was in the 1990s and 2000s that a string of English or Hinglish - a mix of Hindi and English language - films by Indian filmmakers came to the fore.

Some of them are "Hyderabad Blues", "Bombay Boys", "Being Cyrus", "Mr. and Mrs. Iyer", "15 Park Avenue", "Freaky Chakra", "The Last Lear" and "Everybody Says I'm Fine!"

Filmmakers tried their luck, but many couldn't get the desired appreciation.

In 2011, came "Delhi Belly". Starring Imran Khan, Virr Das and Kunaal Roy Kapur, the entertainer regaled a niche audience but it came as proof that the market is indeed open to fresh concepts, tongue-in-cheek adult humour and mature content.

Although Indian filmmakers today are trying to do films different from the run-of-the-mill formulas that have been done to death in the past, they face hurdles in getting expected results.

Debashish Dey of Aum Movies agreed.

"Although English movies have definitely brought various unconventional concepts in Bollywood, there are some factors due to which these movies are liked by a limited audience only," Dey told IANS over phone from Kolkata.

"The main reason is that English movies focus more on the subject with an unorthodox script without Hindi songs and dance numbers, which are the lifeline of Bollywood," he added.

Rightly so. "Finding Fanny" has only one promotional song which is in Hindi, and if Arjun, who plays an integral part of the movie, is to be believed, the film's team was well aware that the movie will have a limited reach.

Actress Nimrat Kaur, who was noticed globally for her part in "The Lunchbox", which set a standard for Indian films in experimental genres, said in the end, "Content matters over concept".

"A film like 'Finding Fanny' is very interesting. It would be exciting to watch mainstream actors like Deepika and Arjun in unique roles. And one has to understand that just a different concept is not enough; the content and audience connect should be good," Nimrat, who is currently in Cape Town, shooting for American show "Homeland", told IANS.

In the coming few years, times will be more ripe for English language movies in Bollywood, conjectures Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines.

But, all said and done, one has to agree that English language movies by desi filmmakers cannot minimise the effect of Hindi movies.

The Big B took to his blog to share his thoughts on the day.

He wrote: "Hundreds and thousands fought for this Independence... dying for the nation was a noble act... sacrifices of immense proportions were the call of the hour... and the entire country followed what was prescribed and what not was not.

"Deprived of our independence for over a thousand years, including the Moghul and British periods, we are a new country... just 67 years old! But our strengths and achievements have surprised all... and shall continue to do so.

"We are on the threshold of great success and great forward movement, and we shall achieve this pinnacle of success... a resilient nation, a humble nation, a nation that gave the most important weapon to mankind... ahimsa! We shall win (sic)."

Maintaining originality was a challenge: Farah Khan on HNY

$

0

Filmmaker Farah Khan says while making “Happy New Year” (HNY), a heist drama, the challenge was not to take anything that she had seen in films made on the same subject.

“The biggest challenge was to keep the film original. Heist is a formula film, so the challenge was not to take anything from any heist movie…” said Farah at the launch of the film's first trailer here Thursday.

A typical Bollywood entertainer catering to the masses, the ensemble drama's cast is starry in every sense.

If Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone play the lead roles, Abhishek Bachchan and Boman Irani, known for their comic timing, as well as Sonu Sood, who loves to flex his muscle on the big screen, join them.

Then stylish Jackie Shroff features as the bad man.

And if Farah had roped in Naseeruddin Shah for her debut film "Main Hoon Na", for HNY she has zeroed on the veteran actor's younger son Vivaan to make the cast interesting.

This is Farah and Shah Rukh's third film together and apart from other ingredients, the former has thrown in good dose of action too, but with an interesting twist.

“We have changed the action in the film. There are no guns in the film and this is so because my son Czar doesn't like watching guns,” said Farah.

Shah Rukh, who was seen performing director Rohit Shetty style action in “Chennai Express”, said that “Happy New Year” brings more action on the screen compared to his last two movies - “Main Hoon Na” and “Om Shanti Om” - with Farah.

“If there is a lady who knows aggression and action, it is Farah,” said Shah Rukh humorously.

“It has lot more action than the first two films,” he added.

Produced by SRK's Red Chillies Entertainment, the film is set to release during Diwali.

I-Day: HNY team decodes freedom

$

Freedom is interpreted differently by the cast and crew of forthcoming Bollywood potboiler "Happy New Year" (HNY) - for some it is about "freedom of expression", while others say when society will understand its "responsibility", we will be free.

On the eve of Independence Day Thursday, the entire team got together for the trailer launch of "Happy New Year", which has a patriotic element in the form of "Indiawale". And at the event some of them spoke about what freedom means to them.

Composer Shekhar Ravjiani said: "We will feel free when we will respect women and there will be no division on the basis of religion."

For his partner Vishal Dadlani freedom is equivalent to a "sense of responsibility."

Actors Abhishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone feel that one feels free when one is allowed to be oneself.

"Freedom means do what you want to do and live your life on your terms and conditions," said Abhishek.

Deepika said: "Just being able to express yourself without worrying about anything is freedom."

Senior actor Jackie Shroff feels that people should create space for the freedom fighters who fought to make the country free.

"Respect freedom fighters… create space for them in your mind," he said.

For young actor Vivaan Shah, freedom means being yourself and as an actor he feels free when it is "pack up" time on the sets.

Bad bob hair in trend

$

Classic bob has been loved by women for years, but now style divas give precision and balance a miss and opt for bad bob hair - a short haircut with chewed ends.

Celebrities like Zendaya Coleman and Hilary Duff recently rocked the look too.

Luke Hersheson, session stylist and creative director at Daniel Hersheson, coined the term "Bad Bob" with the aim of transforming a traditional hair trend into a hot new hair look that will suit women with any face shape, hair type or lifestyle.

He has already given actress Sienna Miller her own version of the Bad Bob.

"This is a bob with serious attitude. It is imperfect, hacked into - there’s nothing precise about it.

"The hair is worn in a side parting with the front kept long, whilst the back is shorter and the hair is razor-cut into to create a super-ratty, almost chewed ends," Hersheson was quoted by femalefirst.co.uk as saying.
