With "Aashiqui 2" heroine Shraddha Kapoor as the showstopper, ace couturier JJ Valaya showcased his line 'The Nautch of Fez', combining the cultural elements of India and Morocco, and infusing them with subtle elements of the Indian nautch girls of the past, as part of the grand finale of the BMW India Bridal Fashion Week (IBFW) here.

The finale was held at the DLF Emporio in an elaborate set-up late Sunday night.

As the showstopper, Shraddha wore a multi-coloured sari-inspired ensemble with Moroccon motifs and techniques like zardozi and gota, which are truly Indian.

"It's a proud moment to walk for the most iconic designers of our industry. I felt like a shy bride almost when I was walking the ramp," Shraddha said here post the show, which was houseful.

Talking about the concept, Valaya, one of the pioneering fashion designers in the country, said: "Nautch girls have always fascinated me.. They were intellectual, but almost like the Geishas of India. It was a beautiful period of India and very important.

"So, I wanted to do something royal around it, and combined it with a dramatically opposite culture like in Morocco."

The crisp couture collection has been created using crepe, dupion, georgette and fine velvet and with techniques like digital printing, applique, laser burning and Valaya's signature embroideries. Colours range from antique, metallic and neutral in symphony with the bright hues typical to Indian bridal wear.

The showcase was sub-divided into six sections -- Phoenecia, Rome, Arab, Spain, Berber and Ottoman - each painting its own unique story.

Actors should take discredit too: Ajay Devgn

$

Filmmaking is team work and when a film doesn't work, actors should take discredit for the failure, suggests actor-filmmaker Ajay Devgn, who is gearing up for the release of "Singham Returns", his ninth film with director Rohit Shetty.

Currently director Sajid Khan, a college friend and colleague of Ajay, is in the line of fire for the "Humshakals" fiasco. His cast is blaming him for its box office debacle.

"When a film works, every actor tries to take the credit for the film, but when it does not work, you should take the discredit too because filmmaking is a teamwork," said the 45-year-old in a group interview.

The actor-producer, who has come a long away since his first film "Phool Aur Kaante" in 1991, admits that the director is the captain of the ship and as a result the onus is on him.

"Yes, the director gives maximum inputs. Sometimes he says, 'Trust me'. But somewhere it's your mistake too. If you felt the script wasn't right, then why did you do it?

"I accept my fault in 'Himmatwala', because I thought it would be made in a different way, but it was made differently. But I won't blame the director for it because everyone is equally responsible," said the actor.

Recently Saif Ali Khan described his stint in "Humshakals" as a "mistake", while his co-actor Bipasha Basu has declared that she will never work with Sajid again.

But the failure of "Humshakals" had no repercussion on Ajay and Sajid's friendship.

"If the film didn't work that does not mean we won't remain friends. We are very good friends even now," said Ajay when asked about his bonding with Sajid post the failure of "Himmatwala", a remake of 1983 Jeetendra and Sridevi starrer.

"I have known Sajid since college days... What is important is that you have a friendship that goes on."

More than directors, actors should give priority to script.

"I think most important is the script. When a director narrates the script, there comes an understanding and you know you will be able to pull it off," said Ajay, adding that with each new film actors want to push the bar for themselves.

"You should go one step ahead of what you have done in the past," he said.

He also clarifies that failures do no cast a shadow on the career of established actors.

"We have crossed that stage where we think that if one film of ours flops, we will stop getting work because we have been here for about 25 years. Hits and flops are there in everybody's life. But, yes, for yourself, you want to push the bar."

His association with Sajid may not have been fruitful, but Shetty and Ajay's team have churned out maximum hits, including "Golmaal" franchise.

Talking about their camaraderie, Ajay said: "It's been 25 years with Rohit. It's very difficult to say how our friendship has evolved, but I would like to say he has grown and worked hard. He is one of the most hardworking directors I have ever worked with and he knows his job fabulously."

Also, "Singham Returns" is not a remake, says Ajay and adds that the film's theme is fresh and "topical".

"We have involved a lot of youths and women in the film. Women will be inspired by the film," he said.

After delivering films as varied as "Queen" and "Revolver Rani" back-to-back, actress Kangana Ranaut says the audience can expect more variety from her performances in her upcoming movies.

"I'm playing very interesting characters now. I'm doing a love story directed by Nikhil Advani, it's a different character, then I will be seen in 'Tanu Weds Manu 2', a film with Sai Kabir - it's a good line-up. You'll see a lot of variety from me," Kangana said during a recent appearance at a fashion gala here.

The National Award winning actress took to the ramp at the just concluded BMW India Bridal Fashion Week (IBFW) here in a creation by Suneet Varma, one of the country's pioneering designers.

While Kangana was impressed with his designs, Varma felt that when the actress ties the knot, the classic red will suit her the best as a bride.

"I think Kangana is a very gutsy and fashion forward thinking actress. I think she has been able to find a very important relevant and current niche that many actress haven't been able to do. She also represents an Indian woman with lot of power. So red is the colour for her (when she marries)," he said.

Actress Shraddha Kapoor, who experienced a muscle pull on her leg while rehearsing for her upcoming film "ABCD 2", gave towering heels a miss to walk as the showstopper for couturier JJ Valaya at the BMW India Bridal Fashion Week (IBFW) here. She says she's recovering well.

"I can't wear heels, so I wore flats for the show. I'm sure everyone saw the disparity in my height (while I was on the ramp. But that's okay! It's a partial muscle tear in leg and I can't walk in heels for sometime," Shraddha told reporters here post the show Sunday night.

As the showstopper for the fashion gala's grand finale, the "Aashiqui 2" actress felt "grand" herself and "flattered to be wearing a creation by one of the czars of the Indian fashion industry".

Since it was a bridal show, Shraddha also admits experiencing a "new tingly feeling".

"I was feeling shy looking at myself in this beautiful creation. It just ignited something within me," said the daughter of veteran actor Shakti Kapoor.

She says her heart went "dhak dhak" before she took to the ramp, but then she said: "As long as you feel good about yourself and in what you look, it helps you to get over any nervousness."

As of now, she's only hoping to recover soon as she needs to resume the rehearsals for dance-based film "ABCD 2" as well as begin the promotions for "Haider".

She made for a beautiful contemporary looking bride when she walked the BMW India Bridal Fashion Week (IBFW) ramp here for designer Jyotsna Tiwari, but in real life, "Raaz 3" actress Esha Gupta still needs a decade to decide when she'll get married.

The model-turned-actress was in the capital Sunday night, and when asked about her wedding plans, the 28-year-old said: "Oh my god! Ask me about ten years from now. Get my elder sister married before me."

Esha loved the contemporary yet traditional voluminous gown that she wore as the showstopper but what would she want to wear for her own wedding day?

"Well, I'll be able to know it ten years down the line. I like this creation by Jyotsna and something like this could definitely work for one of the functions, but for my wedding day, it will be traditional Indian," she said.

The actress, who is looking forward to working in an Indo-British production, did her share of work as a model in the capital before making it big in the film world.

Returning to the ramp in Delhi and that too as a showstopper turned out to be "special" for Esha.

"I'm thankful that Jyotsna took me as her showstopper. I look different and feel beautiful," said the actress, who was glad to be presented in a "not sexy, but sweet, young and innocent" look.

"Bobby Jasoos" actor Ali Fazal could’ve been the Indian face in American TV series "Homeland", but Bollywood projects took away the chance. Nevertheless, he is content with the films in his kitty and is happy for Nimrat Kaur who has bagged a role in the series.

He is busy shooting for "Khamoshiyan" produced by Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt. He will also be seen in Rohan Sippy’s "Sonali Cable", set for an October release.

“I had signed up the film (‘Khamoshiyan’) before and ‘Bobby Jasoos’ was releasing in July, ‘Sonali Cable’ in October. There was no chance for me to consider that (‘Homeland’). It would’ve been great...but I am so happy for Nimrat.

“She is a dear friend of mine. We did a couple of plays together. I am happy that she is doing ‘Homeland’...," he told IANS.

If not “Homeland”, Ali is excited about his Hollywood project - the forthcoming edition of the “Fast and The Furious” series.

“It’s not an Indian part. It’s essential to the script which is why I got excited. My work is with the entire gang. It was exciting to work with Vin Diesel and all. We all grew up watching it...lot of action and cars,” said the 27-year-old.

The fan of sports cars is all set to get his hands on one soon.

“I don’t even have a car yet. I am looking forward to buy one. I can’t give that out yet. It’s sports version of something. There are few cars that make sports version,” he said.

Yo Yo Honey Singh's song "Aata majhi satakli" from "Singham Returns" is climbing on the music charts. Director Rohit Shetty says he added the song at the behest of the film's leading lady Kareena Kapoor.

"It was her idea. She wanted a Yo Yo song in the film. That's why we did it," Shetty told reporters at a promotional event Saturday.

The song features Ajay Devgn, Kareena and Honey Singh along with a number of children dressed in khaki in the background.

Kareena said: "I am a big fan of Honey Singh and I am happy that he has given a song and what better film than 'Singham Returns'."

Ajay, who reprises the role of DCP Bajirao Singham in the film, says the children are the star attraction of the song.

"The kids are very cute and they have actually made the song (interesting). Everybody, when they watch the video, talk about the kids. I was happy that I was not dancing in the song," Ajay said here.

Actress Deepika Padukone says she enjoys a unique camaraderie with her co-star Dimple Kapadia who treats her like a daughter and takes her for outings.

"What I feel for Dimpleji and my equation with her, I can't describe it in words. She took me for lunch and shopping while we were shooting for 'Cocktail'," said Deepika at the 'Finding Fanny' song unveiling here. The two feature in the quirky comedy's cast.

"She pampers me and spoils me. She treats me like her daughter," added the young actress.

The film is coming out Sep 12 and Deepika says that it can be described as a "different" movie rather than bold.

"I will not call it a bold film, it's a different film. When I saw the promos first, I found it to be different. It's refreshing, it's quirky and cool," she said.

Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapur join Dimple and Deepika in the cast of the film directed by Homi Adajania.

The best part about "Finding Fanny" is that Deepika got a chance to speak in her mother tongue.

"I completely enjoyed being part of the film as I also got to speak in my mother tongue - Konkani," she said.

"It's a nice feeling when you have a command over your language. We are used to shooting in Hindi, but speaking in English was a different experience altogether."

Arjun said that the film would whet the appetite of those who crave to see something different on the big screen.

"Everyone complains that we don't do anything different, so with this film I have tried something different.

"It was just an instant decision. I got an opportunity to work with veterans who made us a better actor."

Florida businessman sues brother-in-law over IIFA profits

A Florida businessman of Indian origin is suing his brother-in-law, a noted Indian American philanthropist, for robbing him off of his due profit share earned by hosting a Bollywood film award show.

According to Florida's Tampa Bay Times, the ongoing legal dispute involving the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA), US edition, has entered a contentious new phase.

Plaintiff Chetan "Jason" Shah has accused his brother-in-law Kiran C. Patel, a philanthropist and healthcare entrepreneur, of fraudulently adding his name to IIFA host committee official documents and cutting him out of his share of the profits, the report said.

Shah, a Tampa Bay real estate professional, is suing Patel, who is credited as a top funder and organiser of the IIFAs, a series of Bollywood events held in Tampa Bay, Florida, in April.

Shah maintains being the rightful founder of the American edition of the awards show, and claims that it was him who persuaded event organisers to bring IIFA's first-ever show in America. He claims Patel and other IIFA principals conspired to cut him out of event organising and profits.

The four-day IIFA Weekend reportedly brought significant economic benefits to the Tampa Bay region

The event drew an estimated 30,000 visitors who generated over 26 million dollars in total spending, according to a June 1 release from the Visit Tampa Bay tourism organisation.

In a July 3 court filing, according to the Tampa Bay Times, Shah claimed Patel coerced him into signing a document late last year just as Shah was being rushed to the hospital for heart surgery.

That document allowed Patel to negotiate a new deal with IIFA organisers that cut Shah out of any profits, Shah told the paper.

IBFW: Designers at experimental best (Review)

Be it black bridal collection or an esemble with a wild twist - the BMW India Bridal Fashion Week (IBFW) saw a melange of experimental wedding ensembles enticing prospective brides and grooms.

As many as 10 known designers, including jewellery brand AZVA, gave the traditional red a miss by delving into unusual colour palette, cuts and details. Flattering gowns with traditional embroidery turned out to be scene-stealers at the four-day event that
concluded in the capital Sunday night.

The sixth edition of the extravaganza began Aug 7 at the DLF Emporio mall with Tarun Tahiliani's show. It also saw participation of Gauri and Nainika, Ashima and Leena, Raghavendra Rathore, Falguni and Shane Peacock, Suneet Varma, Jyotsna Tiwari, Meera and Muzaffar Ali, and JJ Valaya, who closed it.

With elaborate and well-planned sets, some of which told a story of their own, the line-up of designers took inspiration from Indian as well as international destinations, elements and culture to offer a fresh take on wedding wear.

"Bridal wear makes a huge chunk of the Indian fashion industry, and we need to keep experimenting to cater to the market," Falguni of the internationally known duo Falguni and Shane Peacock, said here.

Can you think of wearing an embroidered biker jacket, a jersey with '10' on the back and crop tops teamed with an intricately crafted lehenga or a saris? The duo made it a reality at the fashion event, while also giving prominence to black - a colour most Indian women avoid at their weddings.

"Women may not wear it on their wedding day, but black is quite a hit colour when it comes to pre-wedding functions," explained Falguni.

Black turned out to be a staple in most collections showcased at IBFW. Be it Tahiliani, Varma, Valaya or Gauri and Nainika, who presented western style outfits for wedding parties.

"It's timeless," exclaimed Tahiliani.

Creations in the flattering red were part of the lines, but the colours seen in abundance were neutral and nude hues like white, beige, peach and powder pink.

The colour palette was also dominated by soothing shades like turquoise, yellow and pistachio green as well as by bright and dark ones like orange, coral, navy blue, plum and more.

The high-end saris, lehengas, sherwanis, pyjamas, palazzos, churidars and dupattas were seen in different interpretations at the extravanganza, sponsored by German luxury automobile brand BMW.

Pre-draped saris, sari gowns, capes instead of dupattas, layered looks, innovative blouses and an array of designs for women to go gaga over, while men could relish anarkali kurtas and stylised dhotis, as well as unique sherwanis in colours different than the tried and tested.

"Grooms are taking equal interest. It is the age of metrosexuals," Tahiliani said.

While most creations were high on wearability factor, one saw an emphasis on accessories and jewellery, which are an intrinsic part of a bridal trousseau, according to Vipin Sharma, director, Jewellery, World Gold Council.

Jewels from Azva, Alpana Gujral and Ankita Tiwari were used in different shows to bring out the best of a bridal look.

The fashion soiree also saw a decent dose of Bollywood with names like Kangana Ranaut, Ali Fazal, Aditi Rao Hydari, Nargis Fakhri, Shraddha Kapoor and Esha Gupta walk the ramp. Also seen doing the catwalk were supermodel Ujjwala Raut, and socialite sisters Priya and Charu Sachdev.

IBFW has thrown up a world full of options in time for the wedding season.

Hema excited about working again with Ramesh Sippy

Actress Hema Malini and director Ramesh Sippy together gave hits like "Andaz", "Seeta Aur Geeta" and "Sholay". Now the two are teaming up again after over four decades for a romantic comedy and Bollwyood's Dream Girl says this could be "another important film in my career".

Titled "Shimla Mirchi", the film will reportedly tell the story of a single mother, played by Hema Malini, and her daughter (Rakul Preet Singh), who fall in love with the same man.

"In the midst of all that is happening in parliament and my constituency (Mathura), this film offer came to me. Normally, I wouldn't have said yes, given my gruelling schedule in parliament and my obligations in my constituency. But this film is not the usual run-of-the-mill stuff," said Hema.

She fell in love with the script.

"It's light-hearted comedy with a very unusual role for me. I am sure it will turn out to be something very special. Also, the offer came from Rameshji who is returning to direction after many years. I couldn't say no to him.

"Some of my most important films, be it 'Andaz', 'Seeta Aur Geeta' or 'Sholay' have been with Rameshji. I get a feeling this new film with Rameshji would be another important film in my career."

Their last film together was 1972 hit comedy "Sita Aur Geeta", about twin sisters.

How does Hema intend to find the time to shoot for "Shimla Mirchi"?

"Just like I'm doing everything in my life," she shot back.

While life lends itself to a hectic pace from city to city for Hema, she won't compromise on her basic health precautions.

"I have to eat and sleep on time, and properly. That is non-negotiable," she said adding that she was more than contented with life.

"Everything I've wanted has been mine. I wanted my two daughters to be happily married. When Esha and Ahana got married, I didn't get two sons-in-law. I got two sons. My two sons-in-law are the sons I never had."

Sippy's last highly acclaimed directorial venture was the 1985-release "Saagar", which marked the come-back of Dimple Kapadia on the silver screen after a long gap.

"Shimla Mirchi" will go on floors in mid-September.

Actor Shreyas Talpade Monday filed a complaint to stop the sale of pirated DVDs of his latest Marathi production venture "Poshter Boyz", which are selling like hot cakes.

Shreyas, along with "Lai Bhaari" producers Jeetendra Thackeray and Ameya Khopkar, lodged a complaint with the commissioner of police.

“'Lai Bhaari' producers got to know that their film and 'Poshter Boyz' pirated DVDs are out in the market. They informed me and we complained about the nuisance. We were assured that by today evening, they will raid a few places and confiscate the DVDs,” Shreyas told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

The film, which opened on 167 screens across Maharashtra Aug 1, has been produced under Shreyas' banner - Affluence Movies Private Limited. It has done brisk business at the box office.

“This will send out a strong message to the guys that they are not supposed to this. Marathi films (success) predominantly depend on theatrical business. Both films are running to packed houses, and we don't want DVDs to be out,” he said.

“My movie has so far crossed approximately Rs.2 crore,” he added.

Shreyas also shared that if his fans come across such DVDs, they should inform him on Twitter or Facebook, so that the police can take action to stop the illegal sale of the DVDs.

Arjun Kapoor not calculative about choosing films

He is just four films old in Bollywood, but Arjun Kapoor dared to say 'yes' to a unique film like "Finding Fanny". He says it wasn't a calculated move but he did the film to "experience" its journey.

"Finding Fanny" is a quirky English language film by Homi Adajania. The forthcoming entertainer also features Hindi film actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia and Deepika Padukone.

"I didn't think much about doing this film. In fact, I am getting an opportunity to work with such good actors, so I will become a better actor hopefully," Arjun said here Monday at the launch of the song "Fanny re" from the film.

"So I did it just for the experience of it. I am not trying to calculate it like 'whether it's the correct time for me to do this kind of film or I should do it now or later'," he added.

The film narrates the story of five oddballs who venture out in search of Stefanie Fernandes. On their journey they find meaning to their otherwise pointless lives. It is during this journey that Arjun's character in the film falls in love with Deepika's character.

Further, the 29-year-old is amazed at Homi's instinct to have believed in him that he could play Savio's character in the film with conviction.

"I was offered this film at a very interesting time in my life. He (director Homi Adajania) offered me the film after he saw me in 'Ishaqzaade' and said 'I think you can play this character and live this world'," Arjun, who made his debut with "Ishaqzaade" said.

"So I found it interesting that the director has that vision for me at such an initial stage of my career, so I didn't think much about doing this film," he added.

Jointly produced by Maddock Films and Fox Star Studios, "Finding Fanny" is releasing Sep 12.

The actor also loves to travel and is keen to travel to Turkey.

“I would like to go to Turkey. I am looking forward to that. I am thinking of taking mom there… to Istanbul. Turkey has great character and history,” he said.
