Indian film production major Yash Raj Films (YRF) has brought Bollywood fashion closer to fans and fashion enthusiasts by opening its first Diva'ni store here. It is a one-stop destination for cinema-inspired fashion for women.

The first Diva'ni store has opened in south Delhi's South Extension market.

Be it sensuous chiffon saris, stylish gowns or other elaborate ensembles in films like "Lamhe", "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge", "Dil To Pagal Hai", "Mohabbatein", "Bunty Aur Babli" and "Band Baaja Baaraat" over the years, several YRF movies have set fashion trends galore.

YRF has tied up with ethnic wear brand Karol Bagh Saree House (KBSH) for the new label, which has clothes available at a starting price tag of Rs.5,000.

Pamela Chopra, wife of late filmmaker Yash Chopra and Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji were present to launch the store here Wednesday evening.

"This, in a way, is a tribute to my late husband, Yash Chopra, who was known to take a great interest in dressing his divas,” Pamela said in a statement.

"This collaboration is to create high end couture and also economically priced pret range of traditional Indian clothes,” she added.

The store accentuates the amalgamation of cinematic grandeur and fashionable designs. The highlight of the store is a quintessential ceiling inspired by the renowned Michelangelo design, depicting some of the most iconic scenes from classic YRF films.

Get long term glow with skin treatments

Makeup can conceal your facial flaws on your wedding day, but for long term results, try skin treatments like peels and dermaroller therapy two to three months before your D-day, says an expert.

Shuba Dharmana, cosmetic dermatologist, Le’Jeune Med Spa suggests various skin rejuvenation treatments:

- Peels: It involves the use of a solution which causes a controlled peeling of the outer layers of the skin, which has been damaged by sun rays. The tone and texture of the skin is also greatly improved. A series of peels might be necessary to get radiant skin. So consult a dermatologist first.

- Dermaroller therapy: It is good for skin that lacks glow. A roller with tiny needles is rolled across the face after the skin has been numbed with a cream.

- Pumpkin peel facial: It involves a herbal peel that uses pumpkin and willow bark extracts followed by moisturising the skin with three different hydrating masks - a vitamin C and seaweed mask, a collagen mask and an omega 3 fatty acid mask. There is no skin peeling, so it can be done a day before your wedding. The treatment is good for people with acne, dark circles, sensitive skin and for ageing skin.

TV actress Deepika Singh, who plays Sandhya in popular show "Diya Aur Baati Hum", was taken by surprise when she visited the sets of dance reality show "Nach Baliye 6". Her 'skills' were put to the test.

Deepika's character in "Diya Aur Baati Hum" is about to start her IPS training, and so, the actress had to showcase her physical strength by breaking a mountain of tiles.

The tiles had an additional element of fire which made them even more difficult to be broken. Actor Gurmeet Choudhary, a "Nach Baliye 6" contestant, stepped in to help her out.

While the actor had a minor injury, Deepika managed to make a clean sweep in the first attempt.

"I had never attempted anything like this before and it was indeed a difficult task to perform. Gurmeet was more confident and helped me perform the stunt correctly. All I can say is that it is not going to be an easy task taking the IPS training ahead, but I am geared up," Deepika said in a statement.

The "Nach Baliye 6" episode, featuring Deepika, will be aired this weekend.

'Live location sound still absent in Indian cinema'

$

0

Sound in Indian cinema has improved in the last few years, but it is yet to embrace the use of live location sound, says sound designer Kunal Rajan, who has worked on international films and is currently busy with Kamal Haasan's magnum opus "Vishwaroopam 2".

"I feel that sound in Indian cinema has improved immensely in the last three years, but since dubbing the voices in a film is the most common practice, we still haven't adapted to the use of live sound on location," Rajan, who had also worked on "Vishwaroopam", told IANS over phone from Los Angeles.

"I feel this is one area where filmmakers in India need to make an effort," he added.

Rajan, born and raised in Puducherry, is of the opinion that "sound in Indian cinema may have changed from a filmmaker's as well as an audience perspective, but no matter how well you dub your lines, there is a certain quality of live sound that can never be achieved with dubbing."

Having worked on Hollywood films such as "Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer", "Blades of Glory" and "The Spiderwick Chronicles", Rajan is also finishing up a Nigerian film entirely shot in Nigeria with a Nigerian crew.

"It had amazing location sound," he said, and adding: "I can understand the challenges in India considering the loud traffic and actors not always speaking the language, but I am hoping this is one aspect of sound that will change over time."

Rajan holds a bachelors degree in sound from a Singapore institute. He believes that involving a sound designer from the scripting stage of a film helps to add creativity to its sound department.

"It's always great to get involved in a project right from the scripting stage. At that stage, you can really get into the roots of the story and come up with some really creative sound design ideas, which would enhance storytelling," he said.

"A sound designer can discuss ideas with the director even before he or she has shot the film.

"This could affect the way the director would shoot a film. It could be something as small as a shot of a window banging against the wall in a horror film, the sound of which a sound designer could use throughout the film if established once visually," added Rajan, who started his career with short films.

Thus, his advice to filmmakers is to give equal importance and preference to sound in cinema.

"All filmmakers should take the time and effort for doing a proper sound Job for their film. Sound is the last process of a film before the release. This is the time where you will have no time or money and because of this many tend to overlook the importance of sound," he added.

In the past, Rajan had also worked on Indian films such as Rajinikanth-starrer "Enthiran" and Aamir Khan-starrer "Ghajini" besides Hollywood films, but he said the most challenging project was "Vishwaroopam".

"Not only was it a two-and-a-half-hour-long action movie but also was shot in two languages, Tamil and Hindi. Although a lot of scenes were similar, they were not exactly the same. It was like doing almost two movies individually," he said.

Also, working on the film with Kamal Haasan was an "unforgettable experience", and he has now also worked very closely with the actor-filmmaker on "Vishwaroopam 2", slated to release next year.

"Working with Kamal Haasan and seeing him explain what he wants, his energy and his innovative ideas made a lot of difference to the output. He is one of the most brilliant filmmakers I have ever worked with and his energy and enthusiasm made the whole experience not only inspiring for me but for my entire sound team, he said.

In the future, he wants to produce films in India as well as the US.

'Bullett Raja' - masala fest of guns, grime, glory (IANS Movie Review, Rating: ****)

$
0
0

Film: "Bullett Raja"; Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Jimmy Shergill, Sonakshi Sinha and Vidyut Jammwal; Director: Tigmanshu Dhulia; Rating: ****

From Raj Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar in "Sangam" to Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan in "Sholay", filmy friendships have flourished with formulistic fervour in our films.

It takes guts to turn the conventional formulistic cinema about male bonding and revenge into a tightly wound intelligently scripted and judiciously executed drama of political subterfuge in Uttar Pradesh, a favourite haunt for Tigmanshu Dhulia's cinema, here turned into a hotbed of intrigue and drama.

"Bullett Raja" is woven around characters who aren't particular about the company or the morals that they keep. Politicians and entrepreneurs hobnob with criminals and criminals end up becoming heroes of the masses just because democracy in India gives us little to choose from.

Saif Ali Khan's Raja Misra (no 'h' in the surname, plij) is a scummy sort of Robin Hood in Lucknow whom we meet initially as he escapes with his life from goons in screeching cars by gatecrashing into a wedding. There he meets Rudra (Jimmy Shergill). Then begins a kind of affable bonding between the two men, and it goes beyond the precincts of the maudlin friendships we've seen in our films so far.

Saif and Jimmy, brilliant actors both, bring a kind of brusque but unbreakable friendship between them, a bonding that you know only death can break. And it does.

Dhulia, in his most mass-oriented cinematic outing to date, brings a lot of Jai-Veeru's "Sholay" bonding into play. The two actors do the rest. They gamely sink their teeth into the morass of Indian politics, giving a stirring dignity to inherently unsavoury episodes from the murky politics of Uttar Pradesh.

Dhulia's skills as a raconteur of remarkable aptitudes was most evident in "Paan Singh Tomar". Here, he attempts something even more daring. He merges mythological and historical allusions into current politics and he weds heroism and hooliganism without causing any discernible damage to his work's aesthetics.

Saif's character, a mix of goon and boon, gun and grins doesn't tire of reminding his adversaries of his Brahminical roots. He also has a strange penchant for quoting from the scriptures at the most inopportune moments.

This is a film about the scummy people who govern our country from the fringes. They are the kind of characters who either end up rich or dead. We can only curse them under our breath. And yet the spoken language of the characters remains liberated from overt profanities. The same goes for the characters themselves, so lowly and yet redeemed by unexpected bouts of humour and even compassion.

The way Saif's Raja Misra meets Sonakshi's sketchily-written character and the manner in which the script allows him to warm up to her without wasting time is a marvel of scriptural balance. Indeed, Dhulia in his most nakedly commercial outing, catches the routine friends-on-a-rampage plot by its lapels and goes for the kill with splendid skill.

This is a fearless film. It is not afraid to celebrate the much dreaded and abused traditional filmy formula. And then, Dhulia takes his audacity from city to city in Uttar Pradesh. The jagged but constantly coherent plot takes the very conventional characters (good-bad heroes, bad-bad villains, a damsel in distress and lots of decadent politicians) on a bumpy journey across the politics of the cow-belt where there are no sacred cows. Only brazen wolves.

The film's reckless momentum is sustained and controlled by Dhulia's technicians who hit the right notes while taking a route that hardly affords safe options. Dangerously careening towards an anarchic world, "Bullett Raja" swerves away from catastrophe underlining the plot and succeeds spectacularly in creating a world where rampage is the rule.

The soundrack is remarkably authentic, and I don't mean the awful songs. Our cinema, even the most mature variety, still adheres to the radio-play style of dialogue delivery where only one character speaks at one time. Tigmanshu Dhulia allows the words to spill out of his characters as and how they appear natural.

Saif's in full command of the spoken and unspoken language. Here's an actor who can bring gravitas to his character without weighing it down in self-importance. Saif has great support from the ever-reliable Jimmy Shergill. Their bonding is remarkable, and sometimes wickedly over-the-top.

Dhulia's treatment of violence in the hinterland is sharp and constantly tongue-in-cheek. Midway through the mayhem he brings in Vidyut Jammwal (described picturesquely as "Chambal Ka Chowkidar") to bring our scummy hero Raja Misra under control.

Do Jammwal's dexterous kicks succeed in stemming the mayhem? Boy, oh boy, do they! "Bullett Raja" is a subverted comic book adventure. Dhulia goes masala with a bang. And what a bang-bang!

Guns, girls (yes, even an item song by Mahie Gill where she insists she doesn't want to be touched when all her movements suggest quite the opposite), grime and glory come together in a layered tale of corruption, politics and kinetic camaraderie.

The songs brakes the pace. But then you really can't have a formula film without the song breaks.

It takes a politically savvy storyteller of Dhulia's skills to convert the lowest ebb of our politics into an occasion of high drama.

Karan Johar keen to have 'koffee' with Rekha

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who is gearing up to bring the fourth edition of his popular celebrity chat show "Koffee with Karan" Sunday, says he would love to have a tete-a-tete with veteran actress Rekha on his show.

Rekha, 59, has often distanced herself from giving interviews and from appearing in chat shows. The actress had, however, once appeared in a candid TV interview with Simi Garewal.

"I would love to interview Rekha. It would be lovely to speak to her as I have never had her on my show. I think this is the right time and it will always be an honour to work with her or to interview her," Karan told IANS.

For now, the first guest of the fourth season of Karan's show will be Salman Khan, and the filmmaker has been a "great season opener".

"Salman has never been on the show. He is wonderful when he speaks honestly. Salman never pretends anything that he is not, and I think candidness and honesty is something required for a show like 'Koffee With Karan'," Karan said.

"You will see Salman like never before...It was great interviewing him," he added.

Karan believes Bollywood stars get up, close and personal with him comfortably as they share a good rapport with him. That is also why it becomes easier for him to ask questions, sometimes even controversial ones.

"I think I know them (stars), so they have a comfort zone with me and it becomes easier for them to answer and it becomes easier for me to ask. I have never done a show doing any research. I never look at anything while asking. It's just spontaneous," the 41-year-old said.

"Koffee With Karan" will be aired on Star World.

His journey on the show has been "fantastic", he said.

"It's been nine years, nearly a decade. It's been a very large part of my personality," said Karan, who first brought the show to the small screen in 2004.

Only youngsters can bring change: Shibani Kashyap

Singer Shibani Kashyap, who recently performed here at an event to encourage the youth to vote, strongly believes that positive changes in the country's future lies in the hands of the youngsters.

"Over the years, there has been a very dull response to elections. Now, there is a rage because everybody seems to want a revolution and with new parties coming in, there is new energy," the 34-year-old told IANS.

"They (the parties) are promising a lot to the country. I feel only the youth can bring in change. They can decide and decipher who will be the correct leader," said Kashyap, known for songs like "Zinda hoon main" and "Sajna aa bhi ja".

Delhi will vote for its new assembly Dec 4. Kashyap and some members of Election Commission of India, visited the University of Delhi area Nov 23 and promised the young crowd that if they vote, another concert would be held soon.

"The Election Commission of India and I have promised that as thanks-giving when we see the symbol of voting on their fingers, we would give them another concert Dec 15," said the singer.

Although the singer had the option of campaigning for some particular parties, she instead opted to inspire the youth to decide their own leaders.

"I had two choices. I was approached by the Election Commission of India in October and they asked me to spread the awareness and appeal to the people for voting. We should get the maximum turnout. The other thing was that I was being called by various political parties to campaign for them," Shibani said.

"I felt that first I need to be a good citizen and a good Indian and actually be a symbol of something that is far more important, rather than supporting one political party. Let people just go out there and vote. Why should I influence them?" she asked.

Once Shanti, now Nikita: Mandira Bedi

$

0

Nineteen years after she made her TV debut in the Doodarshan serial "Shanti", Mandira Bedi, looking better than ever before, has struck back into the idiot box with her RAW agent act in "24". She says she is surprised by her character Nikita Rai's popularity.

"There is no getting away from the serial's impact. Everywhere I go, people insist on calling out 'Nikita', just as they used to shout out 'Shanti' 19 years ago when they saw me in public," said Mandira.

"Believe me, I am as bowled over by the serial as any one else. I am confined mostly to one section of the goings-on during shooting, so I haven't even met many of the cast members."

"I don't know how the episodes finally look. So, I watch them from the edge of my seat with my husband Raj (Kaushal) and son Vir, like the rest of the nation. In fact, this weekend I recorded the episodes as I was shooting nights for the serial."

Everyone seems to enjoy "24" to the hilt except maybe her little son who finds "mom" missing during bedtime.

Mandira's voice melts with maternal longing when she says, "For the last five days, we've been shooting nights and my son has to make do without me. He (usually) sleeps with his arms tightly around me. So, while I am sleuthing on the sets as Nikita, I am also wondering how my son is coping without me," Mandira said.

"Of course, my husband is extremely supportive. But so far whenever I was asked what it feels like to balance out a career with my domestic responsibilities, my response was academic. Now I finally know how painful it is a for a mother to be working when her child needs her."

But, no complaints! Mandira is in top shape in every which way right now.

"I think I look and feel far better now than I did when I acted in 'Shanti' 19 years ago," she said.

Mandira has only auditioned for two roles in her entire career.

"One was for 'Shanti' and the other is '24'. And they've both proved career-defining," she said.

And yes, the athletic side of Mandira will surface in the coming episodes of "24".

"So far, my gun has been in the holster. Now it'll finally come out in the final episodes when I get to fight in the field. '24' is such a game-changer. I think audiences were somewhere fed up with watching the same Saas-Bahu soaps all the time. I've been part of one of them," said.

Mandira's stint as Mandira in "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi" elicits a shuddering response from her.

"I couldn't seem to shake off the evil woman's image. I was determined to do another fiction serial only when I played the title role in a game-changing serial. Well, I don't play the title role in '24'. But I am pretty much close to the top of the credit lines. And what an experience!"

"People have just taken to the series and to my character. If I tweet about Sachin Tendulkar, they tweet back about '24'."

It's the perfect time to stock up on different party wear ensembles. Go for white dresses and tartan trousers which have found fans in international celebrities like Kendell Jenner, Rita Ora and many more.

The white dress fashion trend has definitely continued since summer and it's going to dominate the fashion trend during the forthcoming party season too, especially during Christmas and New Year celebrations, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

American actress Paula Patton showed off her hourglass figure in a white Versace mini dress with sheer long sleeves at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations press conference.

Model Kendall Jenner also flaunted her figure when she was at the American Music Awards in a white bandeau dress. She also added a statement necklace to jazz up the look.

Tartan trousers, mostly slim fit pants in mulch-coloured checks and prints, are also one of the big trends this season and singer Rita Ora has shown a love for the bold look too.

Such trousers can be loud, but one can tone these down with other neutral items. Stick to a black jumper or blouse and an oversized black coat while teaming it up. Add a pair of chunky ankle boots for a punk take on the look that's ideal for the day.

One could dress them up in the evening with a blouse tucked into them or a simple high-neck crop top and a pair of studded heels.
