Sunil 'Gutthi' Grover's controversial exit from Colors'"Comedy Nights With Kapil" has reached a flashpoint - the channel has decided to replace Sunil Grover with another comic actor Gaurav Gera.

Gaurav's drag act starts this Sunday when Saif Ali Khan appears on the popular show, but he won't play Gutthi. He will play another female character named Dulari.

Apparently, Sunil was planning a comedy show with Gaurav.

A bit of a stab-in-the-back situation, no?

Sunil disagrees. "If it wasn's Gaurav it would've been someone else. The show had to go on. And I'm glad a friend is doing it. I'm looking forward to seeing what Gaurav does," he said.

Gaurav had played a woman on another show "Mrs Pammi Pyarelal" on the channel but the act bombed.

Actor-producer Sunny Deol says that he is looking for the right subject for his son Karan's launch pad.

There were reports that Anil Sharma, who directed Sunny in hits like "Gadar - Ek Prem Katha", will helm Karan's launch pad.

When asked about it, Sunny, 57, said: "Sharma has spoken to him, but it all depends on the subject."

The "Ghayal" star tried his hand at direction with "Dillagi", but has no intention of getting involved in his son's film as a director.

He said: "I may not be directorially involved with my son's project, but definitely, I will be involved in whatever he is doing. Whatever experience I have, I will make use of it."

Flaunting leather apparels is not everyone's cup of tea. If you're on the voluptuous side, keep some key tips in mind to make the right style statement.

Here's how you can nail the look well, reports femalefirst.co.uk:

- Highlight your curves in a leather pencil dress. Add bright heels and a statement necklace to dress up the look.

- For those who are confident about a certain body part, highlight that with your leather pieces. If you prefer your legs, wear a pair of leather shorts and tights or a pair of leather trousers. But if you favour your top half, wear a leather top and necklace or a pair of earrings.

- Combine leather with different textures like suede, fur or feathers, especially if you're wearing an all-black outfit. It'll help to break the monotonous look.

'Indian movies gave diaspora in T&T an identity'

$

Indian movies which were shown in Trinidad collectively and cumulatively influenced major aspects of the life of "East Indians", who had been brought there from the Indian subcontinent as indentured labourers, including their values, religion, dress, music, songs, dance and artefacts, a researcher in the field says.

"Bala Joban", which was first shown in 1934, "marks the advent of Indian movies in Trinidad and with which there were subtle changes in East Indian cultural traditions. As Indian movies continued to arrive on the island, their influence became more pronounced, marked by major changes in East Indian cultural programming," Premnath Gooptar says in his doctoral thesis submitted to the University of Trinidad and Tobago.

Thus, from the performance of traditional songs and dances at public and private events, East Indians began to imitate songs and dances from Indian movies. With time, the limitations changed to re-makes of film songs and dances using Trinidadian and Caribbean rhythms, yet preserving the melody, Gooptar adds.

"Consequently, several changes accrued over the years within major strands of East Indian culture in Trinidad that changed the face of Indian culture in the country, and contributed to the evolution of a new identity for East Indians," Gooptar says.

"It was further argued that this new identity was linked to the imitation of aspects of Indian movies and films influenced the indigenisation of various aspects of Indian culture in Trinidad," he adds.

According to Gooptar, Indian films gave East Indians in Trinidad a national space where their cultural values and their Indianness were legitimized outside the mainstream political life of the country.

"While many saw it as a public space that legitimised their Indianness, it nevertheless heralded the dawn that attuned them to new concepts of Indianism in Trinidad. In the period before the 1980s, a visit to the cinema for the average East Indian was a major justification and celebration of his Indianness."

Gooptar points out that unlike the Afro-Trinidadians who underwent similar colonial and post-colonial marginalisation as the East Indians, they saw representations of Indianness on the Indian silver screen that often provoked a sense of nostalgia and linkage with the ancestral homeland, India.

"They saw a range of Indian lifestyles, mythological symbols and values that revitalised and awakened their Indian identity which evolved into Trinidad-Indo identity, culled from the celluloid images of the Indian silver screen. This was different for the Afro-Trinidadians who were not exposed to African movies but who saw themselves in Hollywood movies in marginalised, disparaging and belittling roles."

Some 148,000 Indians were brought here between 1845 and 1917 to work on the sugar and cocoa plantations, and out of a population of 1.3 million people, the East Indian diaspora represents 43 percent of the population.

If you give your 100 percent, results will follow: Deepika Padukone

$

She has scored a hat-trick of hits on the Bollywood pitch, with each film offering a different flavour of her versatile talent, but Deepika Padukone is in no mood to rest. She is raring to go with more multifarious roles and says she will continue to give them all her 100 percent.

Her first big hit of the year, "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" saw her impress the audience as nerdy Naina, and she followed up its success with her South Indian act as Meenamma in the box office record-breaking "Chennai Express".

Deepika's latest release "Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela", in which she plays a Gujarati girl, has also made its way to the Rs.100 crore club.

"It is magical," the 27-year-old told IANS on phone as she shared her sentiment post the film's success, but she was quick to add that "nothing has changed".

Her debut in Hindi films was like a fairytale - she entered with Shah Rukh Khan in 2007 blockbuster "Om Shanti Om" and the reincarnation drama turned out to be a perfect springboard for the success and popularity that she continues to revel in even today. In fact, she is enjoying much more.

However, a career graph can't be "planned", says the tall and dusky beauty, who made a natural transition from the modelling world to the big screen.

"I've always believed that everyone has one's own pattern, the only thing that I can do is to work with the best of my ability, to work honestly and whole-heartedly and to know that I'm giving your 100 percent. I think the results follow eventually," said Deepika, who is the daughter of Ujjala and former badminton star Prakash Padukone, who was one of the world's best badminton players in his time.

She is also ready to take on more new kinds of films. Independent films?

She drove the conversation to her first 2014 release - Homi Adajania's "Finding Fanny", an English language film produced by Saif Ali Khan's Illuminati Films.

"I'll call it alternate, because it will be pitched differently and it will look slightly different from some of the other films that I have done in the past," explained Deepika, who finds it "strange" to dissect her films into mainstream commercial and alternate cinema.

"I think it is convenient from the audience's point of view to categorise films, but for an actor, what I bring to a film is the same. The only thing probably different in 'Finding Fanny' is that it's an English language film. That was the first time for me, but in terms of my approach to a film, in terms of what I bring to a film or character, that doesn't change with the type of film I do.

"It doesn't matter if I am doing a 'Chennai Express', I'm less or more committed. My enthusiasm for every film will be the same, irrespective of the budget of the film or the way the film looks."

How about her experience of playing such different characters and yet getting the act right each time?

"I think in my case, it's just that the films are doing well commercially, that people are sitting up and noticing that each of my films is different from the other in terms of characters.

"But if you step back a bit, you will realise that even in between 2009 and 2011, the films I did didn't do well commercially, whether it was 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey', where I played a freedom fighter, to 'Break Ke Baad' to 'Karthik Calling Karthik'...

"I am including my first film 'Om Shanti Om', where I played a heroine from the 1980s... So, from the start of my career, I have had the opportunity to play various characters. I am glad that I haven't been slotted as doing just one kind of character or just being stuck to doing one kind of cinema."

'Vidiyum Munn': Suspenseful, well executed thriller (Tamil Movie Review)

$
0
0

Film: "Vidiyum Munn"; Cast: Pooja Umashankar, Malavika Manikuttan, Vinoth Kishan, John Vijay and Amarendran; Director: Balaji K Kumar; Rating: ***

Films on child trafficking usually throw at us startling facts and numbers in an attempt to emotionally hijack us but debutant Balaji K Kumar's "Vidiyum Munn" avoids all such genre cliches and sticks to presenting a well executed thriller that intrigues with suspense from start to finish.

Although inspired from British thriller "London to Brighton", to which the makers have not given due credit, "Vidiyum Munn" stands out as one of the better thrillers of the recent past.

When Rekha (Pooja), a hooker, flees town with 12-year-old Nandini (Malavika) after committing the biggest mistake of her life, her pimp (Amarendran) is given the ultimatum to produce her along with the girl in the next 24 hours to avert a threat to his own life.

It's not the usual thriller flick that you watch and forget as you walk out of the movie hall. "Vidiyum Munn" lingers on in your head for a long time. Cut from the same cloth used to produce thrillers such as "Pizza" and "Yuddham Sei", it's the suspense that guides the film to the finish line. That suspense, with the help of a few characters, is strongly weaved into a labyrinthine story that you will only appreciate when it reaches its climax.

Having worked in Hollywood for over a decade, Balaji, who had earlier directed English thriller "Nine Lives of Mara", gives the film a treatment that's akin to the west in terms of the overall presentation.

One of the concerns of the film might be its slow narrative that runs a little over two hours. The film could've been shorter, considering its genre and the not-so-popular star cast. But thanks to the hypnotic soundtrack of Girishh, the music keeps you hooked for the most part. His music not only heightens the suspense in the story but also serves in building the mood of the film.

Instead of wasting time on explaining circumstances that led Rekha to become a prostitute, Balaji focuses only on the plot which is the hunt for two characters. This is very smart of him and proves that he knows how to use his craft effectively. He also avoids too many characters and throws the spotlight on only those that are linked to Rekha and Nandini.

For not giving credit to the original, "Vidiyum Munn" will lose some respect from the audience. Although it's not a frame-to-frame copy, but those who have watched the British thriller can find a few similarities in the remake. Nevertheless, it's a bold film that doesn't hesitate to tread a path very few filmmakers even aspire to walk on.

Pooja Umashankar in her comeback role is good but she easily gets superseded by child artist Malavika, who acts effortlessly as the runaway kid.

John Vijay gets a little irksome at regular intervals especially with his style of dialogue delivery but he also provides the occasional laughs with his witty one-liners while Vinoth Kishan plays a powerful baddie with very few dialogues.

"Vidiyum Munn" is a step closer to alternate Tamil cinema which majorly caters to those with some intellect and not to entertainment seekers.
