Actor Shahid Kapoor, who is teaming up with "Kaminey" director Vishal Bhardwaj yet again, says the new movie, "Haider", has given him a chance to explore a new space.

Talking about "Haider", Shahid said: "It's awesome. I love working with Vishal sir as he has given me the best character of my life."

"Haider" is the director's adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragic play "Hamlet".

"Vishal sir is doing the third adaptation of 'Hamlet'. Earlier he has done 'Omkara' and 'Maqbool', so it's ('Haider') is very different from 'R... Rajkumar', and it has taken me to a different space. I am enjoying that," he added.

Shahid refrained from revealing much about his role in "Haider". But said: "All I can say is that I am having great time working in this film. We started shooting some time back and we have shot for around 10 days."

The film also stars Shraddha Kapoor and Tabu.

Direction to acting - Akshara Haasan charts new path

$

Actor Kamal Haasan and Sarika's younger daughter Akshara Haasan, who has studied music and filmmaking, is now bitten by the acting bug. But both her parents feel Akshara is more cut out for being behind the camera.

Since their elder daughter Shruti is already an actress, Akshara's filmmaking potential would have nicely rounded off the family's creative ambit. But that has not happened.

"Kamalji and Sarikaji thought Akshara was more interested in direction. Sarika put her on to her friend Rahul Dholakia with whom she has worked in 'Parzania' and 'Society'. Akshara assisted Rahul Dholakia and the whole family thought she was heading towards a career in filmmaking," said a family friend of Kamal Haasan's family.

It was director R. Balakrishnan, popularly called R. Balki, who spotted the actor in Akshara.

"He offered her a role in his new film and Akshara took the plunge," the source added.

In the new film, Akshara is paired with Dhanush, a friend of Akshara's sister Shruti and also the son-in-law of Kamal Haasan's arch-rival Rajinikanth.

While Dhanush and Akshara will star opposite one another, the film also has megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The project is likely to take off next month.

Akshara's father Kamal had said of her a while ago: "She has assisted Mr. Rahul Dholakia. I think she is more keen on filmmaking than acting. Every time Akshara stands behind the camera and says, 'This is where I want to be', I am reminded of myself.

"I started behind the camera and gradually moved to the front. Maybe she too will do so. But not right now."

Victor Banerjee of "A Passage to India" fame is playing the role of iconic Indian guru Paramhansa Yogananda in a film that traces the spiritual life of his late American devotee Swami Kriyananda.

Produced by Kriya Movies and Yogananda Films, the two-hour English language movie "The Answer" was shot across three continents - India, Romania and the US.

The Gorakhpur-born Yogananda moved to the US in 1920 to spread Kriya Yoga and died there in 1952, six years after writing his still best selling spiritual classic, "Autobiography of a Yogi".

The Romania-born Kriyananada, originally Donald Walters, met Yogananda in the US in 1948 at the age of 22 and spent his entire life teaching Kriya Yoga, Sanatan Dharma (universal religion) and meditation in India and around the world. He passed away this year.

Producer Kaveeta Oberoi Kaul told IANS here that Kriyananda wrote the script and was picturised narrating his life story in the backdrop of Kolkata, where Yogananda spent his early years, just before his death.

"He (Kriayananda) passed away just two months after this shooting. Maybe he knew he was not going to be around for long," said Kaul, who is pitching the movie at the sidelines of the ongoing International Film Festival of India here.

"The movie is in English," she added. "But we plan to dub it in various languages including Italian and Hindi."

The movie has music taken from the 400 pieces of music written by Kriyananda.

Thirty eight days of hectic shooting took place in Kolkata (India), Bucharest, Sinaia and Brasov (Romania) and Los Angeles.

With post production procedures expected to take some 10 months, "The Answer" is set for release next year, Kaul said.

The role of Kriyananda has been played by Leon Gulaptis from Australia. Pavan Kaul, a Bollywood veteran known for his technical expertise, is the director. Hiroo Keswani is the cinematographer and Aseem Sinha is the editor.

Kaul pointed out the challenges of shooting a movie related to the 1920s and 1930s in today's world.

"In three countries we had to ensure that everything was just perfect - the cars, the roads, the trains. It was a challenging task. But in the end, we achieved it."

'India, South Africa film collaboration can be of great significance'

India and South Africa collaborating in the field of cinema could be of great significance for the art of filmmaking, a South African director said here Monday.

Elaborating this point to reporters at the 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), South African writer and director Andrew Worsdale said both countries shared history and culture, which could be a nice business platform for Indian film makers in South Africa.

The foundations of close bilateral relations have been laid by India's historic support for the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, and the way his South African sojourn had shaped Mahatma Gandhi, the tallest leader of Indian nationalism.

Complimenting the Indian film industry for producing a wide variety of films, Worsdale said this was an opportune time for collaborations as the South African film industry is in the growing stage.

Worsdale's film "Durban Poison" being screened at IFFI, is a tragic romance story set amongst the marginalized white underclass in his country

Worsdale has made several shorts and produced documentaries, including the cult underground feature-film "Shot Down", which was banned in South Africa.

Actress Huma Qureshi says "Dedh Ishqiya" is different from the original "Ishqiya" and is confident that the viewers will enjoy the comedy-thriller.

Abhishek Chaubey directed film stars Madhuri Dixit, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi in the lead roles.

"This film has nothing to do with 'Ishqiya', it's altogether a different story. My character is very interesting. 'Ishqiya' was intense, 'Dedh Ishqiya' is fun and I am sure everyone will enjoy it," said Huma.

The actress, who is sharing screen space with renowned actors like Naseer and Madhuri so early in her career, considers herself lucky.

"I am very fortunate to work with such good actors. I think I have worked with some of the best actors of our time," said the actress who teamed up with Manoj Bajpayee in "Gangs of Wasseypur".

Chaubey had presented Vidya Balan in a very bold avatar in "Ishqiya". In the black comedy, Vidya played clever and sensuous Krishna, who uses two petty criminals Iftikhar (Naseer) and Babban (Arshad) to take revenge on her husband.

When asked why he didn't cast her in the sequel, the director said: "We couldn't take her character ahead as we had nothing to offer. So, we thought we could take ahead the story of two men and how they fall in love with someone else."

Southern actress Tashu Kaushik, who has teamed up for the second time with director Rajesh Nair for upcoming Malayalam thriller "Escape From Uganda", says such collaboration results in increased expectations of the viewers.

"Expectation levels are bound to go high when you work with the same director again. If audiences have already appreciated the collaboration, then they will have high expectations from the team," Tashu told IANS.

Tashu and Rajesh had earlier worked together in Malayalam romantic-drama "Annum Innum Ennum".

"Expectations also depend on the character one essays in the film. If I were to play a smaller role in the second film, then expectation level will be low. Likewise, if I get to play a strong role, it automatically draws high expectation," she said.

On the brighter side, working with same director also makes an actor comfortable, said Tashu.

"Your comfort level is high when you work with the same director again. You get used to his working style and enjoy the work," she added.

The film also features Rima Kallingal, R. Parthiepan, Mukesh and Vijay Babu in important roles.

Internet secures future of documentaries: Indo-Canadian filmmaker

$
0
0

The internet is a boon for short films and documentaries as it serves as a platform to grab more eyeballs, says Indo-Canadian filmmaker Keshhav Panneriy. He feels that the medium has exposed docu-dramas to a bigger commercial market and that the revenue generated through the domain also helps recover costs.

The filmmaker, a first generation Indian in Canada, is known for his documentaries like "Eternal Love 2013" and "Chemical Farming: Boon or Disaster?"

Documentaries in India were on the brink of extinction, but "today they have a much bigger commercial market and buyers than earlier", Panneriy told IANS in an email interaction from Mumbai, where he is working on a new project.

"With so many technological advancements, there are huge numbers of online platforms and thousands of online film festivals which help documentary filmmakers generate revenue through each single click directed towards their film," he added.

"Nowadays the narrative of documentaries has become more engaging, attracting larger audiences via the online medium," he said.

Originally from Udaipur, Rajasthan, the filmmaker made Canada his base in 2004 by starting a film company, A.K. Films Inc. He came back to India in 2009 to establish the Keon International Film Academy film school, now based in Mumbai.

Apart from a gripping narrative, it's imperative for filmmakers to resort to the latest technology to attract more moviegoers.

"I wish to give a movie a modern and updated take in terms of technology so that it can stand in an international podium," Panneriy said.

The treatment of the film is another element which decides how the end product turns out to be, feels the filmmaker, who graduated in Film Production from the Toronto Film School, Canada.

"It all depends on the treatment, which sometimes makes a simple story look very beautiful. Otherwise, a good story can also appear flawed if not complemented with advanced technique and modern vision," he said.

Now Panneriy is planning to make a feature film penned by US-based author Purnima Mead.

The film revolves round the struggle of an Indian woman, who dares to dream - and the hardships she faces in trying to achieve her goal. It also speaks about the way in which women are perceived in Indian urban society with its bias towards men.

Panneriy feels India provides the perfect backdrop for his film and is perfect to support the story.

"Where else do you think I would have found the ambience, the colours, the street noise, the traffic, the hustle and bustle, the order that we find in chaos, the mood... it is a story of an Indian woman; hence to bring in the original touch to it, India is the place (to shoot it)," he said.

The leading lady of the film still remains to be found. The director is looking for an actress who is willing to shed her glamorous avatar for the role.

"We are considering a face that does not have a screen image or one that may dare to break her screen image. The industry generally categorises a heroine as glamorous, arty, mainstream or so, but my actress should be the one who can be glamorous and strong with the same ease," he said.

He further added: "We have approached a few Bollywood mainstream actresses and they are hesitant to accept the solo lead role because of their image. As soon as my team and I settle with a leading lady, we will let everyone know."

Nagababu to imitate brother Pawan Kalyan in his next

In upcoming Telugu comedy "Choosinodiki Choosinantha", actor Nagababu will imitate the role of his young brother Pawan Kalyan from his recent release "Attarintiki Daaredhi". The film's director hopes the audience takes it in the right spirit.

"Nagababu sir will essay the role of Pawan Kalyan from 'Attarintiki Daaredhi' and his character is also named after Pawan's role. We have even made him (Nagababu) don the same look as Pawan in the film. We want the audience to take all this in the right spirit and not get offended," the film's director Anil Vatupali told IANS.

"This has been done purely for entertainment purpose. Some of the recent Telugu films featured leading comedians imitating scenes from several star's films, but we thought only Nagababu sir can do this particular role. Any other comedian imitating Pawan Kalyan may not have gone down too well," he added.

The director clarifies that the intent is not to cash in on the success of "Attarintiki Daaredhi".

"We are only trying to have some fun. Even Nagababu sir enjoyed playing this role. We have no intention on banking on the success of the film," he added.

The film also features Sivaji, Krishnudu aka Alluri Krishnam Raju and Nitya in important roles.

Actress Anushka Shetty and her "Singam" co-star Suriya have collaborated with TeachAIDS campaign, which aims to spread awareness about the disease among children. She says she wishes to follow the cause closely.

"I'm not much into social service and have never been associated with any programme," Anushka told IANS.

"One of the reasons I didn't get associated with any programme (yet is) because I usually don't follow it, but I wish to follow the AIDS awareness initiative religiously," Anushka told IANS.

Actors Shruti Haasan and Siddharth are also a part of the campaign.

Anushka along with other actors have featured in an animated awareness video on AIDS, which was unveiled recently.

"I belong to a very conservative family like majority of others in this country and I know how we react to AIDS and sex education. We even consider talking about it a taboo not just in schools, but even in colleges. I'm sure programmes like these will create more awareness," said Anushka, who initially distanced herself from people afflicted with HIV.

"I was associated with two groups with AIDS many years ago and once when they offered me food, I refused to eat it because I felt uncomfortable and didn't have the awareness that it's safe to dine with them. Today, I don't feel the same because I have the knowledge," she added.

Anushka is currently busy shooting for Telugu films "Rudhramadevi" and "Baahubali".
