Filmmaker Mehul Kumar arrested

Filmmaker Mehul Kumar, known for movies like "Tiranga" and "Krantiveer", is in police custody in a case of misappropriating funds, an officer said.

Kumar was arrested Friday. He was dragged to court by Jayantilal Gada of production house Popular Entertainment Networks Ltd. (PEN Ltd). Gada had lent Rs.6 crore to Kumar to make two films, however, the latter used half of the funds to build a mall in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

An official from Juhu police station told IANS: "The court has taken Mehul Kumar under custody yesterday. He has been arrested and is in Arthur Road Jail."

Kumar took money from Gada in 2000. However, he ended up making just one film, without returning the money to Gada.

Gada had approached the court in 2010. The court then directed the Juhu police station here to lodge a case against Kumar and conduct an inquiry.

Gada hopes to get justice.

"I had given Mehul a total of Rs. 6 crore to make two films. With Rs.3 crore, he made
'Kitne Door Kitne Paas' (2002) and then he took Rs.3 crore for his second film, which never went on floors.

"He went and spent Rs.4 crore meant to make a film, on building a mall in his home town in Jamnagar. I am glad he is under custody and hope to get justice," Gada told IANS.

The movie, starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, is Bhansali's interpretation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Prior to its release Friday, it was caught in legal hassles over the title.

I'd love to make children's films: Rajkumar Hirani

Bollywood director Rajkumar Hirani, who is here to watch his son Vir's directorial debut film "Return Gift", expressed his desire to direct films for children someday.

"Return Gift", a four-minute film made by the teenaged son of the "3 Idiots" director, is based on a true story of his grandmother. It was well received by school kids, their teachers and parents who watched the film during the ongoing 18th International Children's Film Festival, India, here.

"I had never thought about making films on children. But after seeing so many kids and their involvement in movies, I feel I should make one. I would love to make a children's film," Hirani said after the screening of films made by young directors aged between 6 and 16.

He was proud of his son.

"As a father, I feel good. He (Vir) is shy, he didn't even want me to be here," said Hirani, who believes technology has eased the process of filmmaking.

"If you have a camera on your phone, and a great idea, then shoot it. There are editing softwares too. This wasn't the case when I wanted to get into filmmaking," he said.

The experience of shooting "Gori Tere Pyaar Mein", about an urban man who follows his lady love to a village, seems to have brought in a change in actor Imran Khan. He says he won't mind a holiday in a village without mobile connectivity.

"Sometimes I feel I could go to a village for a holiday, where there are no phone calls, no network," Imran said while shooting for UTV Stars’ "Breakfast to Dinner".

Busy promoting his forthcoming film, which releases Nov 22, Imran took some time off to shoot for the show, where he spoke about his love for travelling and five things that he always carries in his bag when on a tour.

The cameras followed him to Nagpur where he spent a day promoting "Gori Tere Pyaar Mein", which also stars Kareena Kapoor.

Imran revealed that his wallet is mostly penniless.

“I never carry money in my wallet. My friends often tease me because of that. I keep a credit card, driver’s license in my wallet and that’s it," said the actor, who showed off his one most-loved bag that has travelled with him around the world.

'Rajjo' falls flat (IANS Movie Review, Rating: *1/2)

0
0

Film: "Rajjo"; Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Paras Arora, Prakash Raj and Mahesh Manjrekar; Director: Vishwas Patil; Rating: *1/2

Films about prostitutes, with or without a heart of gold, have fascinated filmmakers and viewers from the time Nargis and Meena Kumari did "Adalat" and "Pakeezah", respectively.

Then there was Sharmila Tagore carrying the concept of the pristine prostitute to the peaks of sublimity in Shakti Samanta's "Amar Prem".

With time, the concept of the prostitute with a halo has lost its sheen. Virginity and sexual sacrifices are no longer the sacrosanct commodities they once used to be.

"Rajjo" tries hard to create empathy - or is it sympathy - for the prostitute on the path of rehabilitation. Years ago, we had Anil Dhawan trying to give a home and a sense of security to call girl Rehana Sultan in "Chetna". In "Rajjo", we have a newcomer Paras Arora trying very hard to look like the guy that the distressed prostitute can depend on. The older woman's sexual seduction was far more sincerely done recently in "B.A. Pass".

"Rajjo" is a losing battle all the way. Not only does the callow youngster (said to be 21 in the script but looks 16) seem ill-equipped to give "Rajjo" a new life, the script itself seems in desperate search of a life. It meanders from an intended plot of self-righteous nobility to a domain of absolute absurdity and crudity.

The dialogues that flow from mouths which seem constructed for deception during times of drama seem to sound like graffiti on toilet walls.

Writer-director Vishwas Patil means well. Maybe just as well as B.R. Chopra when he cast Vyjayanthimala as the rehabilitated nautch girl in "Sadhna". But Vyjayanthimala could dance. Kangana can't.

Lamentably, good intentions don't translate into good cinema. Dialogues comparing women to commodities that are meant to be scathing attacks on the position accorded to women in our society, come out sounding cheesy. The editing and choreography don't support Kangana's character in any way.

Instead, they drive the narrative around the bend creating a kind of chaotic universe where actors drop in, say their allotted lines quickly and leave without getting involved in the mess.

The actors, even tried-and-tested ones like Mahesh Manjrekar and Prakash Raj seem to be screaming to get attention.

The only technician who seems to take his job seriously is cinematographer Binod Pradhan, who shoots the messy material with sincerity. But what can a world class cinematographer shoot in a film that's hellbent on shooting itself in its leg?

The fallen woman has never before fallen with such a thundering thud.

Small screen actress Pratyusha Banerjee was Saturday evicted from reality show "Bigg Boss - Saath 7".

Pratyusha, known for portraying Anandi in popular TV show "Balika Vadhu", recently took charge of the house as the captain. But due to the eviction, she missed the chance to 'boss' around.

She maintained a cordial relationship with all the housemates, but was seen getting into fights with wrestler Sangram Singh and VJ Andy.

The youngest inmate in the house, Pratyusha, 22, used to get irked whenever her co-contestants used to talk about her age. She wanted everyone to treat her like any other contestant in the "Bigg Boss" house, and not like a "kid".

For now, the "Bigg Boss - Saath 7" house inmates include Gauhar Khan, Tanisha Mukherji, Armaan Kohli, Sangram, Elli Avram, Andy, Kamya, Ajaz Khan and Sofia Hayat. The show airs on Colors.

I want to imbibe Indian culture into my music: Steve Aoki

0
0

A fan of Indian food, music and Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, US Electro House DJ-producer Steve Aoki, who will be touring the country later this month, is keen to collaborate with local artists here and explore Hindi film music.

"I absolutely love the food in India, especially the Biryani. I could eat Indian food all day long, so that's something I'm looking forward to," Aoki told IANS in an email interaction from Los Angeles.

"I want to get fat off Indian food. It would also be great if Sonam Kapoor came and said 'Hi'! I would love to see her at the gig," he added.

Aoki last came to India in 2012. He will be here again to perform two small gigs -- in Delhi Nov 29 followed by a performance in Mumbai the next day. His first Indian music festival performance will then be held at Sound Awake in Bangalore Dec 1.

Organised by DNA Networks, Sound Awake is a bi-annual Electronic Dance Music (EDM) festival that provides a platform for performances by some of the popular national and international artists and seeks to redefine the genre.

As much as he is looking forward to sharing the platform with Indian talents, he also hopes to "collaborate with an Indian artist in the future".

"India has such a rich culture, it would be great to imbibe that culture into my music. I'm like a sponge, I like taking in a lot of information and Indian music is something that I'm very keen to learn more about.

“Unfortunately, I haven’t got a chance to really explore Indian music and Bollywood music. I need to research on it as this is something I really want to explore,” he added.

Aoki founded his own label, Dim Mak Records, in 1996 which he named after his childhood hero, Bruce Lee. He is credited with hit albums like "Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles", and most recently "Wonderland".

The 35-year-old says he always "wanted to visit India" and was "very excited at the thought of coming back".

"India is a beautiful country with rich culture and amazing food. I've been telling all my friends and people I meet here about everything I have experienced. When you drive down the street, there are just so many different things you see and experience. It's just an incredible country," he said.

Aoki is famous for throwing a cake towards the audience and using a raft to mingle in the crowd during his live performances. As a part of the Sound Awake festival, he is set to give his signature taste to the Indian audience too.

"I want the Indian audiences to see what a Steve Aoki show is like, so you can expect my signature raft, the cake and champagne at Sound Awake.

"I'd like the organisers to source the cake, raft and champagne made from local ingredients as promoting indigenous products is really important to me," added the performer, who says the Indian audience left him "pleasantly surprised" last time.

"They love and care about dance music. The energy levels are great, they were no pretences, everyone was out there to just have a crazy time."

He is expecting the same this time round too!

- Ready to wear: Try suspender and armhole saris. Divided palazzos of the suspender sari don't restrict your movement and the unstitched pallu can also be worn as a stole. You can literally 'slip into' the pallu of armhole saris as these have pre-stitched opening for the arm. You need not pin it up.
