Actress Sonakshi Sinha, who has worked under acclaimed filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia's direction for the first time in "Bullett Raja", says the movie is his most commercial project ever.

"This is Tigmanshu's most commercial film. Also, after 'Omkara', Saif will be seen in a rustic and earthy avatar, so that is something I am looking forward to in 'Bullett Raja'," Sonakshi told IANS.

However, she is quick to point out that "even though this is Tigmanshu's most commercial film, he has not left the main essence of his style of filmmaking, which is hard-hitting with heavy dialogues.

"It's made on a grander scale and he gave me complete freedom to do my role my way."

Bankruptcy behind actor Paul Bhattacharjee's suicide: Inquest

0
0

British Indian actor Paul Bhattacharjee was declared bankrupt shortly before he committed suicide in July this year, an inquest has heard.

Bhattacharjee, 53, who had starred in James Bond film 'Casino Royale' and television soap 'EastEnders', had an “irreparable” darkness inside him which might have led him to commit suicide, the inquest at Eastbourne Magistrates' Court was told, The Telegraph reported Thursday.

The actor, who lived in Elephant and Castle in Central London and was best known for his role as Inzamam Ahmed in 'EastEnders', went missing July 10 and the body was discovered in East Sussex July 12.

Following Bhattacharjee's disappearance, his girlfriend Emma McKie, 23, opened some letters in his flat and discovered that the actor had been declared bankrupt the day before he went missing July 9.

“He was a proud and protective man and he couldn't have handled the bankruptcy becoming public knowledge,” McKie was quoted as saying.

"He would not have wanted to let me down or hurt me or his friends,” she said.

"The bankruptcy was the final straw after a life of major highs and lows," McKie added.

The girlfriend of the actor described him as a beautiful and loving man. She said he had a close knit group of friends, including three or four he had known since his 20s.

The court heard that McKie last saw her partner July 10 and the actor complained about having an upset stomach.

She called the actor at around 7 p.m. that night to say that she was on her way home.

Bhattacharjee texted her later that he would get late and told her to have dinner without him.

A final text message McKie received from the actor at 9.16 p.m. on the night of his disappearance was "I'm sorry".

East Sussex coroner Alan Craze later received an anonymous letter saying that the actor's death was wholly linked with the bankruptcy.

David Tye, a detective sergeant of Sussex Police, said that there was no indication that anyone else played any role in Bhattacharjee's death.

"Paul was an incredibly gifted versatile and generous actor but also complex, deep thinking, engagingly opinionated and politically committed as a personality, truly wonderful to share a stage with," Meera Syal, who appeared alongside him in the Royal Shakespeare Company production of 'Much Ado about Nothing', said.

Colleagues across stage and screen, following the death of the star, poured in to pay tributes.

Bhattacharjee played the role of a doctor in 'Casino Royale' in 2006 and was in several episodes of 'EastEnders' as Masood's brother Inzamam between 2008 and 2010.

The actor also worked for the television serials like 'Waking the Dead', 'Spooks' and 'The Bill'.

I've never received so much appreciation: Rakesh Roshan

0
0

Riding high on the success of his latest superhero directorial "Krrish 3", Rakesh Roshan wants to go on a holiday and at leisure bask in the glow of the unending appreciation coming his way for making a movie that is high on emotions and packed with international-level special effects.

In a tete-a-tete, he opens up about the journey of "Krrish 3", working with his son Hrithik and his future plans.

Q. "Krrish 3" has been unanimously accepted. You must be relieved because you were competing with American superhero films.

A. I have to tell you that I was very nervous when I started making this film. I wasn't confident about pulling off the same level of excellence as the Hollywood superhero films. But somewhere, god gave me strength and I went on shooting exactly as I had planned. I shot precisely what I thought my film would be.

Q. It feels victorious?

A. Yes, you could say I felt victorious. Hrithik and I were satisfied with what we saw. After that we left it to the audience to decide how they felt about what we had done. Fortunately for us, the audience has liked what he had done. In my entire career as a filmmaker, I've never received so much appreciation. The phone just doesn't stop ringing. I am getting calls from friends and strangers from all over the world. It is very humbling. When they say 'Krissh 3' puts Hollywood superhero films to shame, I feel 10 ft tall.

Q. The special effects are indeed very special in 'Krrish 3'.

A. But it's the story that really works. It is the story, the emotions that bind the audience to the special affects. The stunts and action can only be an added attraction. One can't make them the main event. I was very conscious of the fact that audiences would be coming back to see the 'Krrish' saga, and not just any ordinary film.

Q. The father-son emotions have been truly appreciated?

A. Those emotions are an inherent part of my cinema. I don't have to try to put emotions into my films. They are there within me. I always choose subjects that have a strong emotional base. I first chose the content and then I wove the action scenes around the emotions.

Q. Apparently Hrithik wanted to play the super-villain?

A. When he told me that, I flatly refused. If Hrithik had played the super-villain, we'd have to sit at home and watch the film.

Q. The father-son rapport between you and Hrithik is unique to cinema in any part of the world. Would you ever think of making a film without Hrithik?

A. Make a film without Hrithik? Why would I do that? I've the best star-actor in my house. Why would I go to anyone else? Hrithik was my right-hand man throughout the making of "Krrish 3". The two of us are completely professional on the sets. We speak to one another as director and actor on the sets. We don't whisper to one another. If he asks for one more take, I don't give it to him because he's my son, but because I know the shot will get better if he is asking for a retake.

Q. So when are you making "Krrish 4"?

A. Right now I am exhausted. My mind is blank. I may make a love story or an action film before "Krrish 4". Let's see how the success of Krrish 3 pans out. If the current collections continue in the next week, we'll celebrate. Right now my happiness comes from seeing my wife and daughter's smile. They've seen Hrithik and me work so hard.

Q. What immediate plans?

A. A holiday. I won't make another film until I feel like it.

Locations play key role for Kabir Khan

For his film "Kabul Express" Kabir Khan went to shoot in Kabul and via "New York" he took the audience on a tour to the hotspots of New York City. His upcoming action-thriller "Phantom" captures Beirut but the director says he doesn't consciously pick unique locations.

"I don't consciously aim at shooting movies in different locations but if my films feature never-seen-before locations, then why not," Kabir said in a statement.

"Most of my films have revolved around international politics. So the locations you have seen so far in 'Ek Tha Tiger' and 'Kabul Express' were organic to the film's narrative.

"We've shot important scenes of 'Phantom' in Beirut which was scheduled for two weeks and we'll be shooting the film in US, London, Kashmir and Punjab. It's a 90 to 100 days' shoot,"

"Phantom", produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, features Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif in lead roles.

"Fortunately, Sajid backed my decision to shoot in the locations I had suggested," said Kabir.

Palekar prefers original talent over celebrities' carbon copies

0
0

Actor-filmmaker Amol Palekar expressed his unhappiness over increase in number of child artists, who are more like carbon copies of big stars in movies and music. He believes those with originality should be promoted instead.

An open forum on Children in Media: Rights of Child Artists was held here on the second day of the 18th International Children’s Film Festival, India (ICFFI), which started Thursday. The “Chhoti Si Baat” star was one of the panelists.

“Why are we asking children to be perfect copies of stars like Salman Khan and Aamir Khan? Why are we encouraging them? Why not encourage original singers or actors who have their own identity?” asked Palekar.

“Talent hunts are disturbing. No one knows where are the winners of reality shows now. It’s just momentary glory,” he added.

He also believes that paying money to child actors is a way to show respect to their work and hours put in by them, but variation in amount is unfair.

“Is so and so a bigger star or is he paid higher than the other child actor? If you start differentiating like that, it’s exploitation and unfair,” he said.

Palekar also opines that it is incorrect for parents to live their own dreams through their children.

“Parents try to fulfil their dreams which they couldn’t do themselves. It is unfair. It’s not the child’s duty. When I’ve to work with children, I don’t like the parents to be around. I want to see the child what he’s good at because ultimately I’ve to deal with the kid,” said Palekar, who has made films like “Dumkata” and “Kairee” which feature children.

Assamese actress Bobbeeta Sharma, who made her cinematic debut with “Anirban” when she was a child, also believes that the child’s consent should be taken before signing any TV show or movie.

“It shouldn’t be just parent’s decision. You should ask the child also. Sometimes, parents push the child to act and say, ‘You’ve to do it’,” said Bobbeeta, who now also produces and directs TV shows.

She says there are more ways to spot talent rather than sending children to participate in TV shows.

“Even schools can spot talents. If you use children for commercial purpose, that is not talent,” she said.

Jai Bhanushali's love for cricket, courtesy Sachin

TV actor Jai Bhanushali says as a child, he always wanted to play cricket on the same pitch as Sachin Tendulkar did when he was a youngster.

"The meaning of cricket changed when Sachin entered cricket. Every child who has ever been inspired by cricket is because of Sachin Tendulkar," Jai said here Friday at the launch of Charisma Spa.

"I remember when I was in seventh or eighth standard (in school), I used to plead with my mother to let me go and play cricket at Shivaji Park and on the same pitch on which Sachin used to play and (I used to say that I) will learn from the same coach," he added.

Jai has a lot of happy memories thanks to Sachin.

"There are a lot of memories associated with him, and he has also been a source of happiness. Whenever there was an India-Pakistan match and he used to hit sixes, it was a moment of joy. He will be missed by all," Jai added.

Sachin Tendulkar played his 200th and final Test at the Wankhede Stadium here Saturday, with India defeating the West Indies by an innings and 126 runs to claim the series 2-0. Sachin scored 74 runs Friday in the only innings India played.

Age is just a number: Urvashi on romancing Sunny

Model-actress Urvashi Rautela, 19, has shot romantic scenes with 57-year-old Sunny Deol for "Singh Saab The Great", but so what? Age is merely a number, says the debutante.

She says she was "not at all" sceptical before signing the film.

"Age doesn't matter to me. What's there in the age? It's just a number! When we can see Rajinikanth romancing Aishwarya Rai madam...it's just like that. I know it's a big age gap, but we are all very professional and as long as we look great together, nothing matters," Urvashi told IANS.

She says her "chemistry" with Sunny looks "great on screen".

Urvashi bagged the Miss Universe India title in 2012, but she was later dethroned because she didn't meet the age requirement.

A dancer trained in five different forms, she says she would love to do a film where she is able to harness her talent to the hilt.

"I have learned five different dance forms including Bharatnatyam, kathak, hip-hop, jazz, belly dancing. That's the reason I would like to do a film on dance," she said.

Directed by Anil Sharma, "Singh Saab The Great", releases Nov 22.

'The Lunchbox' reaches Zurich

One of the most acclaimed movie of recent times, "The Lunchbox", has released in Zurich, a unique event indeed for a Hindi film.

"It's freezing over here. But Zurich is gorgeous. We're promoting the film here for a weekend release," lead actress Nimrat Kaur said from Zurich.

The Swiss media and movie lovers are reportedly agog about this unconventional love story between two bereft souls in Mumbai who never meet.

"It's amazing over here," said Nimrat, adding: "After 'The Lunchbox' releases here in Zurich this week, we are off to Berlin to promote the film there. We'll be in Germany for a week. Then we proceed to France to promote the film in French cities for a week."

Speaking on the film's journey, director Ritesh Batra said: "The love for the film has been very overwhelming beyond anything I expected. All the love that the film got outside India would not have meant anything if it didn't succeed at home.

"I think it worked in India because it's a sincere attempt to look at Mumbai and its people."

"The Lunchbox" was made with French and German collaboration, and hence the wide release in Europe.

"Only 50 percent of the money (for the film) came from India. The rest we had to generate from outside India. There was also a German and a French producer. So that money which was raised from France and Germany had to be used in those countries. That is the rule.

The film stars Irrfan Khan as the male lead, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a supporting role.
