On his 61st birthday, Rishi Kapoor's top 10 films

$
0
0

Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, who turned 61 Wednesday, has entertained his fans over the years with comedy and romantic roles. Here’s looking at the ageless entertainer’s 10 best films:

“Mera Naam Joker” (1970): This is where Rishi Kapoor's astounding journey as a star-actor began. Playing an adolescent who has a serious crush on his school teacher (Simi Garewal), Rishi, at 14, won his first National Film Award. Looking at his performance, under father Raj Kapoor's direction, even today you feel that he got the confusions of sexual awakening in his character dead right.

“Bobby” (1973): From here onwards Rishi's struggle to make his presence felt in heroine-oriented film began. Whether it was “Bobby” or “Barood” (1976), the directors focused on the heroine, while Rishi made his presence felt as best as he could. While Dimple Kapadia played the author-backed role in “Bobby”, Rishi was amazing in his confidence level while portraying the rich, introvert and neglected child of irresponsible parents.

“Rafoo Chakkar” (1975): Delightful in drag, Rishi simply stole the show with Paintal playing his farcical foil. And yes, wife Neetu Singh was around too. Narendra Bedi directed this enjoyable desi version of “Some Like It Hot”. Amazingly, decades later Paintal son Hiten Paintal played Rishi's son Ranbir's pal in “Bachna Ae Haseeno” (2008). But the chemistry was not the same.

“Laila Majnu” (1976): One of Rishi's greatest performances. As the legendary lover, he absolutely lived the pain, agony and suffering of the character in the sand dunes of Rajasthan. H.S. Rawail directed this film. Madan Mohan songs like “Barbaad-e-mohabbat ki dua saath liye ja” were put across by Rishi with intense passion. Simply breathtaking.

“Amar Akbar Anthony” (1977): Playing Akbar in the film where Amitabh Bachchan's Anthony clearly had an edge, Rishi's qawwallis “Parda hai parda” and “Taiyyab ali pyar ka dushman” stole the show. No matter how brief his role, Rishi always has fun with it.

“Sargam” (1979): Armed with a dafli and oozing a rustic charm as a love-smitten villager, who wants nothing but to see the object of his adoration (actress Jaya Prada) happy, Rishi re-defined the do-gooder hero's space in Hindi cinema by making the character believable and vulnerable. Another very accomplished performance.

“Karz” (1980): The ultimate rockstar act in the fulsome musical by Subhash Ghai. No one could take to the dance floor the way he did. Not even his very talented son. In this film on the theme of reincarnation, Rishi took sweet revenge on his school teacher from “Mera Naam Joker” Simi.

“Prem Rog” (1982): Another heroine-centric film where director Raj Kapoor focused entirely on young widow Padmini Kolhapure’s plight. And yet as her silent supporter and sympathiser, Rishi excelled far beyond the script. Watch his expressions during the song “Yeh pyar tha ya kuch aur tha” during Padmini's marriage. You'd know why many consider Rishi the best actor of the Kapoor clan.

“Ek Chadar Maili Si” (1986): One of Rishi's most underrated performances, here he was cast as Triloka, a rustic Punjabi youngster forced to marry his Bhabhi (sister-in-law) Hema Malini who is 10 years his senior. Adapted from literateur Rajinder Singh Bedi's short story, this bold film remains memorable for giving Rishi a chance to explore something beyond his usual rom-com space.

“Khoj” (1989): At a time when he played loverboy roles, Rishi took a grand risk with this role of a man who murders his own wife. But shhhh! We don't know that until the end. And as we all know, 'The End' is a long way off from Rishi's exceptional career.

Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, whose last film "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" reaped gold at the box office, believes that minting money is one parameter to measure a film's success, but numbers are not the be-all-and-end-all of filmmaking.

At an event here, Farhan was asked if he is an actor who keeps a track of the numbers that his movies make.

He said: "Not to the extent that it drives me crazy. When you work on your film, you want it to do well and one barometer of knowing whether your film is doing well or not is the box office.

"The other is how people are talking about it, then how many years after it has released people still remember it, which is also another level of success. So that's one aspect of it that you like to know. But is your happiness only going to be based on this and life not move on if you don't get those numbers? You have to move on."

The 39-year-old spoke on the sidelines of the launch function of a new handset by Intel here Wednesday.

Farhan's latest film "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" crossed the Rs.100 crore mark at the box office and the film was even declared tax-free.

Sridevi - the female Rajinikanth in Japan?

$

Not since Rajinikanth has an Indian actor made the impact that Sridevi has in Japan -- thanks to a preview and festival screening of her comeback film "English Vinglish". What's more, the film has not even been released there as yet!

Apparently, the theme of an Asian woman struggling with the English language has struck a universal chord in Japan. And the Japanese women, themselves driven to despair by the linguistic discrepancies of the diaspora, have embraced the film in a big way.

Now, they want to meet Sridevi before the film gets a Japanese release in December.

Speaking from Tokyo where he is currently visiting to launch the film, producer R. Balki said: "The response is terrific. Every Japanese women identifies with Sridevi. The Japanese love the film. Anyone and everyone who has seen it has connected immediately with the theme of linguistic barricading."

On the evening of Sep 1, "English Vinglish" was screened in Tokyo's Aichi Women's Film Festival. Later, it will get an all-Japan commercial release.

"We are planning a very wide Japanese release. The distributors in Japan think this is the first Indian after the films of Rajinikanth that the Japanese will connect with in such a huge way," Balki said in an excited tone.

He said the movie, directed by his wife Gauri Shinde, would get the biggest release ever in Japan for an Indian film.

"We are planning a major release here in Japan. It would be the biggest ever release in Japan for any Indian film," he added.

Such is the demand in Japan to meet Sridevi that producer Eros Entertainment plan to take the actress to Tokyo and other cities later this year.

"The Japanese identify with all the linguistic insecurities of Sridevi's character Shashi. If you cut away the spice and chillies in our food, we are exactly the same as the Japanese," he said.

Balki says the demand to meet Sridevi in Japan is deafening.

"Gauri and Sridevi have become very popular here. The word on the film in Japan is very strong. Sridevi must come to Japan," said the filmmaker.

Andhra police told to provide security for 'Zanjeer'

The Andhra Pradesh High Court Thursday directed the police to provide security for the smooth release and screening of Hindi film "Zanjeer" and its Telugu version "Toofan" starring actor Ram Charan Teja, son of Union Tourism Minister K. Chiranjeevi.

The court asked the director general of police to provide necessary security to theatres screening the two movies throughout the state from Friday.

"Zanjeer" and "Toofan", starring Ram Charan and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles, are set to be released across the state, currently witnessing political turmoil over the decision to carve out separate Telangana state.

Reliance Big Entertainment Pvt. Ltd had moved the court seeking directions to the government to take steps for smooth screening of the two films in view of threats from some quarters.

The petitioner feared obstacles to the screening of the movies in the wake of these threats.

Reliance entertainment informed the court that it has invested several crores of rupees to produce, market and distribute the movies. The company said it had already signed contracts with several theatres for screening the films.

The company moved the court as its representation to the police did not evoke any response.

Some groups in Seemandhra (Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra) have threatened to disrupt screening of the movies to protest what they call Chiranjeevi's failure to oppose strongly the proposed bifurcation of the state.

The movies may also face problems in Telangana, where some groups alleged that Chiranjeevi was trying to stall the formation of a separate state.

In the past, films of Chiranjeevi, his brother Pawan Kalyan and Ram Charan have had to face the ire of pro-Telangana groups.

Abhinay Deo hopes to direct '24' season 2 too

Filmmaker Abhinay Deo, who is helming 24 episodes for the first season of the Indian version of international series "24", says "hopefully", he will be roped in to direct its second season as well.

"I am doing '24'. Hopefully, I will be doing the next season as well," Deo told IANS.

The director believes the show, a thriller starring Anil Kapoor, will open up the gates for many different types of shows to be aired on the small screen.

"24" is a series based on an American TV show of the same name. Since the show is very different from other shows on Indian television, it was tough to adapt it for an Indian audience, he said.

"We are trying to do something new on TV. There was no precedent or anything which we could refer to. The international series is so good and inspiring. The toughest part was to adapt it to the Indian context," he said.

Even though it is inspired from a foreign series, the director wanted it to be completely Indian in feel.

"We needed to look at the various points and make it Indian. I wanted to make sure that it ends up looking like an Indian show. It must not look like an American show. It was very challenging," said Deo, who has directed films like "Game" and "Delhi Belly" on the big screen.

He said several changes were made to the script as well as in the characterisation. Anil Kapoor steps into the shoes of fictional character Jack Bauer, but the role has been made more humane in nature to suit the sensibilities of the Indian audience.

"Jack Bauer is originally very cold and understated. We have made it more Indian and given him a heart and a soul. We have increased the family value of the show because ultimately Indians believe in family much more," said Deo.

"24" will air on Colors in October. The show will also feature Shabana Azmi, Tisca Chopra and Mandira Bedi.

We love to worship Bollywood stars: Anubhav Sinha

$

0

Bollywood director Anubhav Sinha says Hindi film audiences are still smitten with star power, but he is happy that new genres of films are making their way to theatres.

Sinha has worked with established actors like Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt, as well as with newcomers.

"Bollywood is not moving away from its age-old paradigm. We love our stars and worship them. Pick up the top 10 grossing films of Bollywood, they are all in the same Bollywood space and recipe. Most of them are star-driven films," Sinha told IANS over he phone from Mumbai.

But now, audiences are accepting films in new genres like the thriller "Kahaani", which is a positive sign.

"What is happening is that audiences are also accepting stuff from outside the Bollywood recipe. That is good news," he said.

The director, whose upcoming film "Warning" has newcomers like Suzana Rodrigues and Santosh Barmola, said that working with fresh faces has its merits and demerits.

"You can be way more relaxed with a newcomer than what you can be with a star. But both the avenues come with their pros and cons. It is a choice which a director should make...whether to rope in a star or not," he said.

Sinha, who has even directed superstar Shah Rukh Khan for "Ra. One" said that the big names he has worked with have been very supportive.

"The stars whom I worked with were nice and hardworking people. Being with them on a set or film was not difficult," he said.

Sinha is also producing Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla-starrer "Gulaab Gang". He said that working with both the actresses has been "a great experience.

"I'm working with two ladies who I've been a fan of even before I came into the industry. I met them at different points, but getting to work with them and putting them together in a movie is a great experience. Seeing them together is fantastic," he said.

"Gulaab Gang", directed by Soumik Sen, is a film based on women activists. Sinha disagrees that Bollywood is moving towards women-centric films.

"'Mother India' was made decades back, so was 'Bandini'. 'Mere Apne' had a female protagonist. I don't know why we want to jump to this conclusion that audiences are changing or that cinema is changing. We made these films long back. They became successful long back," he said.

Indian cinema theme of first Seychelles India Day

$

Indian cinema will be the theme of the first Seychelles India Day that will be celebrated in this picturesque Indian Ocean archipelago of 115 islands during Oct 4-6.

To be an annual feature from now, Seychelles India Day will be celebrated on the weekend succeeding the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi Oct 2, the Indian high commission here said.

This inaugural cultural fiesta is being jointly organised by the Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and the Indian high commission in collaboration with the local business community.

Given India's symbiotic relationship with Seychelles through the Indian-origin people, who constitute seven percent of the island's population of less than 90,000 people, the smallest among Africa's 54 nations, the theme for the celebrations has been designated as "100 years of Indian Cinema".

The high commission said that on the occasion "top performers from the Indian film industry would showcase India's music and movies to Seychelles". India will be celebrated through its food, music and movies.

Indians have been among the earliest settlers of Seychelles, mostly from Tamil Nadu and of late from Gujarat, who came as labour, petty traders, construction workers and more recently as professionals. The Indian community comprises Seychellois of Indian origin in their first or second generations, or even older.

Performers from India will include noted choreographer Terence Lewis and his troupe, leading singer Akriti Kakkar, ace percussionist Tanmoy Bose representing Indian classical music, chef Sanjiv Kapoor and actor Kajal Aggarwal of Tamil blockbuster "Singham" fame, the high commission said.

The current Seychelles-India annual trade is a little more than $50 million. Indian business presence in the island off the African coast includes those of the Bank of Baroda, Bharti Airtel and Telecommunications Consultants of India. The TATA group has supplied most of the buses for public transport in Seychelles capital Victoria. India's Polaris Software Lab is currently developing the banking services in Seychelles.

'Zanjeer' - at last, a Big B remake that gets it right (IANS Movie Review, Rating: ****)

$
0
0

Film: "Zanjeer"; Cast: Ram Charan Teja, Priyanka Chopra, Sanjay Dutt, Prakash Raj, Mahie Gill and Atul Kulkarni; Director: Apoorva Lakhia; Rating: ****

Let's not get carried away. Every time a remake comes along, we get gooey-eyed and nostalgic about the original. The "Zanjeer" remake gets it right. Dead right.

Unlike Ram Gopal Varma's remake of "Sholay", which was purely misguided, and Karan Malhotra's "Agneepath", which was unnecessarily brutal, "Zanjeer" is just what a remake should be. It's respectful to the original material which, let me hasten to add, was no masterpiece, and suspiciously similar to a 1967 film called "Death Rides A Horse".

In fact, a similar film "Yaadon Ki Baraat", written by Salim-Javed and released during the same year 1973 as "Zanjeer", was far superior.

Providentially, Lakhia's "Zanjeer" is neither slavishly reverent to the original material nor does it take off into weird wild and wacky tangents -- like the Rohit Shetty's recent remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Golmaal".

Rather, the new "Zanjeer" opens up the original plot, weeds out the humbug and preserves the core of the revenge saga of an angry cop whose ire grows progressively higher as the plot moves through a series of cleverly conceived conflicts that accentuate his alienation from his khaki-coloured line of duty.

No one can do to the sullen cop's role what Mr. Bachchan did. But yes, even in his new avatar, Inspector Vijay Khanna seethes, simmers and boils over with an indignant rage. Everything about the festering rotten 'system' makes him annoyed and churlish.

Since "Zanjeer", and its more serious-toned country-cousin "Ardh Satya", numerous cops have vented their cinematic spleen in films as far-ranging in quality as "Singham" and "Policegiri".

What makes Vijay Khanna in the new "Zanjeer" special is the plot-mechanics which put him in time-worn situations, but subject him to dramatic dynamics that give the prototypical Angry Cop a renewed riveting life of violent score-settling.

That this time the Angry Cop, who was played with such compelling candidness by Amitabh Bachchan in the original "Zanjeer", is played by Ram Charan Teja is just a huge stroke of luck for the remake. Ram Charan brings in an entirely unique brand of silent satyagraha to his character. When we first see him on screen, he wallops a goonda-politician on a busy road of Hyderabad as a hoarding of Ram Charan's father Chiranjeevi's film looks down on the chaotic scene.

A version of "Raghupati raghav..." plays in the background as Ram Charan lets us know without wasting time, that he means business.

The pace from that hard-hitting moment is relentless. The momentum never slackens even when Vijay Khanna gets down to expressing tender thoughts for the fast-talking befuddled and disoriented NRI girl Mala. Playing Mala, Priyanka Chopra seems to have a whole lot of infectious fun. She spells joie de vivre and looks gorgeous. Priyanka is the comic relief in this fast-paced actioner where fists and the background point out an ominous warning.

Lakhia paces the proceedings as a rush-hour traffic of bustling events. No one has the luxury to stop and think as the narration gathers up a storm of pulpy conflicts building up to an exceptionally staged climax filmed amidst the volatile proceedings of a crowded Moharram event.

From the Ganpati Viasarjan to the Moharram, Lakhia's interpretation of "Zanjeer" traverses a mammoth canvas of rapid-fire images. Gururaj Jois's camera moves dexterously, but never to divert our attention from the central conflict. And Chintan Gandhi's dialogues use one-liners judiciously, never over-doing the smart-alec retorts.

The film's action, by Javed-Ejaz, feels and looks right. The attention paid to getting the action sequences right is highly commendable. There is an elaborately staged multiple-explosion sequence in a huge Dharavi-like slum which belongs to a Vin Diesel-starrer.

Sanjay Dutt steps splendidly into Pran's part. His sequences, though limited by the actor's physical unavailability, show the sensitive side to his aggressive personality. The bonding between Ram Charan and Dutt comes across as effectively as the one between Ram Charan and Priyanka and Prakash Raj and Mahie Gill.

And the momentum never slackens.

Fast-paced, and forever furious, "Zanjeer" also finds space to be excruciatingly funny. In fact, the whole villain-vamp equation between Teja (Prakash Raj) and Mona Darling (Mahie Gill) is here subverted to a kind of comic coitus interruptus where Prakash Raj repeatedly keeps talking about sex without getting down to it while 'Mona' Mahie Gill purrs and moans and pouts -- not out of passion but for just the opposite reasons.

The most tongue-in-cheek homage I've seen in a remake occurs in this film when we see the new Teja-Mona pair watching actor Ajit and Bindu in the original "Zanjeer" on a DVD. The sequence is irreverent without appearing to belittle the original. It reminds us of the renewed cycle of art and individual talent.

Throughout the film, we sense the director's immense affection for the original "Zanjeer", a reverence that never clouds his judgement.

This is one remake that stands tall and lithe. It is manned by a manful supply of action and yet manages to keep the machismo understated. Breakneck-paced, adrenaline-pumping, pulse-pounding -- Lakhia's deconstructed version of the Prakash Mehra film is a full-on pacy paisa-vasool entertainer with brio and balls.

Ram Charan Teja makes an impressive Bollywood debut. We can safely say he is the man among the boys.

Go for it!

Actor Vikrant Massey, who has had a brush with TV as well as cinema, says all he wants to do is "good work". The medium doesn't matter to him.

The actor has been part of shows like "Dharam Veer", "Balika Vadhu", "Baba Aiso Varr Dhoondo" and "The Serial". On the big screen, he was recently seen in "Lootera".

"I intend to do everything that has good content. I am here to do good work. I don't care about the medium through which people get to see it," Vikrant told IANS in a telephonic interview.

The young actor recently made his debut as a host with TV show "Yeh Hai Aashiqui". Produced by BBC Worldwide and Lost Boy Productions, the show airs on UTV Bindass.

"Yeh Hai Aashiqui" deals with unconventional love stories and relationships that are considered taboo in the society.

Timeless Jewels 2013 is set to bring traditional kundan and polki jewellery crafts from Rajasthan, and diamonds from Mumbai and Surat under one roof here.

The three-day exhibition, starting here Friday, will also showcase bridal jewellery.

"Jewellery is not only about owning a piece you can afford, it is all about emotions - your values, your perception and your feelings that eventually get passed on from generations to generations," Tarun Sarda, CEO, Timeless Jewels, said in a statement.

The 10th edition of the exhibition presents an array of precious and semi-precious pieces from jewellery houses like Shri Ram Hari Ram (UC) by Shrihari Diagems, Sanzany by Rachna Motani, The Cappuccino Collection, Bikaneri Jewels and Ishaan Gems.
