Avinash Sachdev to play male chauvinist in 'Iss Pyaar Ko...'

We have seen him playing a loving and caring husband in popular TV show "Choti Bahu". But actor Avinash Sachdev is now ready to play a male chauvinist in the second season of "Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon".

The show, a romantic-comedy drama, will hit the small screen with a new tagline - "Ek Baar Phir". It will air on Star Plus.

Talking about his character, Avinash told IANS: "In my previous show 'Choti Bahu', I had essayed the role of a person who is simple, kind and down-to-earth. But now, for the first time I am playing a bad boy... a male chauvinist. It was challenging."

The original show was extremely popular and had upset a lot of viewers when the curtains came down upon it abruptly with Barun Sobti, the lead actor, quitting the show to pursue his Bollywood dreams.

Avinash says when he started shooting for the new show, he didn't know it would be a sequel to "Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon".

"When I started shooting in January, I wasn't aware that it would be a sequel. The show revolves around a couple, who has different interests and still they fall for each other," he said.

The actor says no special preparations went behind making his role as convincing as Barun did in the original.

"I haven't watched the original show because at that time I was busy with 'Choti Bahu'. Also, like I said, I was not aware that it's a sequel," said Avinash.

Avinash believes the show will cater to viewers of all age groups as love-based content attracts one and all.

"It completely depends on the concept of the show. 'Iss Pyaar Ko...' is a family drama. So, it would definitely attract homemakers. But there's a chemistry between the lead actors, so that might catch the interest of youngsters," he added.

Avinash, who also owns a fashion clothing house in Malad in Mumbai, admits that the sequel bug has caught TV producers too, but he hopes his own show does well.

"It's a different concept," said the actor, who believes there's no shortcut to success.

Nothing finalized on the item song in Ram Leela

$

First it was written that Madhuri Dixit was doing the item song in Ram Leela. Then they said it was Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

So a friend of director Sanjay Bhansali wants to know, “Was it going to be Sridevi next in the line of comeback queens who were supposedly making a beeline for the item number in Ram Leela?”

According to reports,SLB was “in advanced talks” with Aishwarya for the item song. Untrue.

Says a close friend of the director, “Sanjay has not even met Aishwarya socially, let alone professionally. He only met Aishwarya at Shah Rukh Khan’s Eid party. He hasn’t met her anywhere else. How could she make a comeback with an item song? It’s inconceivable! If and when she comes back it would have to be with something that befits her stature image and status.”

So then the question is, who started this rumour of Aishwarya doing an item song for Ram Leela?

“Search us,” says SLB’s friend. “Because we certainly didn’t. Even the latest rumours that Priyanka Chopra is doing the item song in Ram Leela are not true. Not yet. Sanjay is in talks with Priyanka Chopra. But she isn’t finalized as yet.To therefore suggest that Anju Modi is doing Priyanka’s clothes is akin to buying a cradle for a baby that’s not yet conceived.”

Tamil version of 'Madras Cafe' yet to get clearance

The Tamil version of John Abraham-starrer "Madras Cafe" is yet to get a clearance for release from the Central Board of Film Certification, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court was told Wednesday.

The Hindi version of the movie releases Friday.

"A Madurai bench Wednesday observed that the Tamil version should not be released without an appropriate certificate. The case has been posted to Sep 3," petitioner B. Stalin told IANS.

Stalin, an advocate, had filed a PIL seeking a ban on the film, alleging that it contained "objectionable content" and might lead to law and problems if released.

The film came under the scanner after Tamil activists alleged that it portrays the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres as terrorists.

After attending a special preview of the Shoojit Sircar-directed film Sunday, the objection against the film by the groups grew stronger.

Tamil filmmaker Seeman, head of Naam Tamizhar (We Tamils) group, said the film was "nauseatingly anti-Tamil".

In a related development, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Tamil Nadu unit chief Pon Radhakrishnan said the movie should not be released in any part of the country.

Also featuring Nargis Fakhri, Rashi Khanna, Ajay Rathnam and Leena Maria Paul, "Madras Cafe" is a fictional story inspired by true events.

It is set against the Sri Lankan civil war and also depicts the 1991 assassination of former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Bollywood actor-producer John Abraham Wednesday urged "all of Chennai" to support the release of his film "Madras Cafe", which Tamil activists have denounced as "anti-Tamil".

"I would like to urge all of Chennai to support 'Madras Cafe' as a film and release it as it is a credible film made with a lot of heart and it gives audiences something novel to be entertained about," John said in a statement.

The movie, directed by Shoojit Sircar and produced by John, is said to be on the Sri Lankan civil war that ended in 2009.

The "Madras Cafe" team had to face the ire of Tamil activist groups such as Naam Tamizhar and MDMK, who sought a ban on the film contending that it portrays LTTE cadres as terrorists.

John has said he won't give in to "bullying tactics".

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha gave the media a sneak peek of his debut production venture "Warning" by unveiling its trailer here Wednesday. He admitted he was very scared.

The movie has been produced under Sinha's banner Benaras Mediaworks.

He was hesitant about showing the trailer, and said that he was feeling just as scared as how he felt when his first directorial "Tum Bin" was being presented to the audience in 2001.

"I have wanted to produce films for a while as I cannot make all the films I want to make as a director. I am so scared while releasing the trailer today...I felt like this during 'Tum Bin' as well," he said during the trailer launch of the film here Wednesday.

Production was a tough experience for Sinha, who said that it required a huge amount of belief in the project.

"This was tough. It requires an immense amount of belief in the subject matter and the people. I want to thank all my producers in the past. I realise how tough it was," he said.

Sinha also added that this was the toughest film he has made.

"It is a small, but a tough film. I hope to make another one next year," he said.

Based on a true story, a huge portion of the film has been shot underwater, and he admits it was indeed difficult for the team.

"The actors had to stay in the water (almost) all the time. It was not easy for them as well," he said.

"Warning" is a 3D horror film and stars Santosh Barmola, Suzana Rodrigues, Varun Sharma, Manjari Phadnis, Jitin Gulati, Sumit Suri and Madhurima Tuli. It will release Sep 27.

'Madras Cafe' - taut, exceptional political thriller (IANS Movie Review - Rating: ****)

$
0
0

Film: "Madras Cafe"; Cast: John Abraham, Nargis Fakhri and Raashi Khanna; Director: Shoojit Sircar; Rating: ****

If only history could be changed by art. Cinema is a powerful medium for socio-political expression and revolution. Alas, in this country, entertainment engages all other aspects of life on celluloid.

But seriously, it's time now to get off the "Chennai Express" and get into "Madras Cafe" for a cup of the compelling. We need a reality check. And we need to regain a sense of history in Bollywood cinema which seems lost in the hoary art of streetside tamasha, glorified and aggrandized by processes of cinematics that are perceived to be the elixir of pop culture.

It is time for mainstream entertainment to grow up. Heightened realism is a means to achieve a synthesis of fantasy and history in this deftly scripted semi-fictional account of the processes leading to Rajiv Gandhi's tragic assassination in 1991.

The trenchant script, co-written by Somnath Dey and Shubendu Bhattacharya, attempts and succeeds in building the same spiral of pseudo-history that Oliver Stone built in "JFK". I feel Indian politics, because of the country's multi-culturism, is far more complex than its American or European counterpart. Our cinema tends to dilute, simplify and trivialise history because we are much too wary of and lazy about getting involved.

Not Shoojit Sircar. Not "Madras Cafe". Not John Abraham. What a courageous producer and actor John has proven himself to be! More of that later.

But first the plot.

Let me say right away, that to understand the enormity of the story told in "Madras Cafe", the audience ought to be familiar with the violent history of the Sri Lankan civil war. But even if you don't know that thousands of Tamilians died in the war of separatism, it is no sweat off the screenplay's back.

Tucked away in the compelling creases of the plot is a terrific thriller about the assassination of a prime minister, who, let it be known, is not named in the film. Nor are the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam), Prabakaran and the other key players. But then this is India. Here, secrecy and stealth are the founding fathers of any political expose.

But you can't escape the clutches of history's tyranny. Sircar's skillful interweavement of fact and fiction leaves little room for scepticism. We know as we watch with helpless astonishment, that the 'Prime Minister' will die, that the hero in this case won't be able to save him.

Such are the heroes in real life. Unsung, sizes smaller than life. John Abraham skips into the part of the RAW agent Vikram Singh with an ease and comfort of a natural-born secret agent. If James Bond or for that matter Kabir Khan's Tiger were to have any truck with real-life politics, they would have been as believably brave and as credibly heroic as John in this film.

Every actor seems to take a cue from the vast resources of authenticity at their disposal. Specially riveting is Prakash Belawade as John's associate, who seems to drink hard to escape from the enormity of his compromise. Even Nargis Fakhri, so self-consciously affected as Ranbir Kapoor's doomed soul-mate in "Rockstar", nails her war correspondent's part with her radiant presence. But I have a quibble with her character Jaya. Why does Jaya speak in English while Vikram answers in Hindi?

The linguistic puzzle never quite obstructs the devastating drama of war violence conspiracy and betrayal. These are dramatic points of political reckoning. And yet Sircar keeps the proceedings subdued and low-key. It's a miracle how Sircar's narrative voice never gets shrill even when the occasion is so ripe for over-statement.

Plenty of the credit for the tonal correctness of the narrative must go to Kamaljeet Negi's brilliantly unadorned cinematography, which locks in on stunning visuals of violence and espionage-related action without falling into the mistake of making the frames look prettier than the grim situation that they are meant to capture.

Sircar's editor Chandrashekhar Prajapati imbues a documentary style mood to the footage. But the sense of cinematic expansiveness is retained in the way the camera moves through the characters' restless lives, searching for positions of comfort in a situation laden with desperate anxiety.

There's a whole lot of stifled drama in "Madras Cafe". When a key character dies in the second-half, the tragedy is handled without fuss. John's tight-lipped performance gives the film a sense of tragic grandeur. We constantly feel we are in a territory where drama has no place. The soundtrack is exceptionally honest. Shantanu Moitra's background music underscores every scene without hammering in the emotions.

"Madras Cafe" is a dark deep and satisfying film about the politics of separatism. The film doesn't take sides. If it is against anything, it is the culture of violence that nations often feed into neighbouring countries for their own gains. This film opens up the hitherto unexplored genre of political drama in Bollywood.

After "Vicky Donor", we know Sircar is comfortable exploring innovative cinematic territory. Here, he tells an edgy disturbing provocative but rational and fair-minded story that takes mainstream Bolywood cinema kicking and screaming into a new horizon.

This is cinema signifying a coming-of-age with unforgettable visuals and drama and a rousing mature career-defining performance by its leading man.

Get off the train, baby. This is arguably the best political thriller that Bollywood has so far given us.

The growth of the Punjabi film industry makes "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!" fame Manjot Singh glad. He is also happy with the opportunities Sikh boys are getting in Indian filmdom.

The 21-year-old has acted in a Punjabi movie titled "Pure Punjabi", and he says he will work in more such projects if the roles are good.

"I am very happy that the Punjabi film industry is growing so much. If I am offered a good role there, I will definitely do it," Manjot told IANS.

The budding actor, recently seen in "Fukrey", is proud of himself and the Sikh boys who are getting substantial roles in tinsel town.

"I'm very thankful to the industry for what I have got and glad that now Sikh people are getting a lot of chance. Initially, they were participating in a lot of comedy roles. Now they are getting good lengthy characters and good chances," said the actor, who grew up in the Preet Vihar locality of east Delhi.

After playing light, energetic and fun characters, Manjot is now ready to experiment with new roles.

"Everyone experiments with their work and I am glad that I am experimenting at this stage, so that I know how people will accept me in future," he said.

Manjot's father Paramjot Singh, who has done small roles in movies like "Patiala House" and "Vicky Donor", will also be his reel life father in the Hindi movie "The Zero Line". The movie, in which Manjot will play an intense role, will mark his debut as a solo actor in Bollywood.

Talking about working with his father, he said: "He shouts at me at home and even in the movie, he was supposed to do the same in most of the scenes. So it was very easy for us to shoot that."

Based on Indo-Pak relations, "The Zero Line" is directed by Gagan Puri and produced by Niraj Gadge.

Money doesn't excite me: Sushant Singh Rajput

$

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput, a small town boy from Patna, is getting plum projects in tinsel town. But he says that for him, money is only a means to survival. Beyond a point, it doesn't excite him.

"The kind of production houses that I am working with, I can go around and do films and ask for a whole lot of money, but that's not the reason I am here for as money doesn't excite me," Sushant told IANS.

"This is not the reason why I want to be in this industry. I need money just for survival and it doesn't excite me after a certain point and the same is with fame," he added.

The 27-year-old, who made his Bollywood debut with "Kai Po Che!" earlier this year, will next be seen in Yash Raj Films'"Shuddh Desi Romance", and he is also a part of Rajkumar Hirani's "P.K.".

Sushant admits that he refused certain projects as he felt he couldn’t contribute anything to them.

"I've said no to four-five films. If I think I don't fit there or contribute to the film, I say no. Most of the projects for me have to do with realistic films, and as an actor, the first step is to convince myself. If I can connect with it, I can convince myself, then I say yes to it,” he said.

In "Shuddh Desi Romance", which also stars Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor, the actor has locked lips with his lady love.

But, he says, his lady love TV actress Ankita Lokhande does not feel insecure if he has such bold scenes on screen as she is a thorough professional.

"We all are professional and so is Ankita, so she doesn't mind me going bold. We have to make up our mind. So as long as it's justified and working for you as an actor, it’s fine. In the realistic space, such things happen so I am okay with it,” he said.

Sushant, who acted in TV shows like “Pavitra Rishta” and “Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil” before making a foray into films, has no interest in working with actors who lack passion.

"I don't want to work with actors who are not passionate about their work. I can't work with them. I would rate myself 10 on 10 for being passionate. But acting wise, I rate myself three or four. I still have a long way to go as an actor,” he said.

As he started out as a TV actor, he is happy with the kind of change that the TV content is going through. He also doesn't mind returning to his roots.

"The kind of change is coming on TV... the kind of seasons they are coming up with instead of leaps, I am happy with the change. It's a very powerful medium. I am open to everything and why not? I may be seen on TV also,” he said.

Indian film industry lacks technicians: Shah Rukh Khan

$

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who set new benchmarks in Indian cinema with the use of new technology in "Ra.One", says he would love to do "Ra.One 2", but that could take time as the country lacks trained technicians.

He says technology and equipment alone aren't enough to make a technologically high-end film.

"We have the latest technology and the equipment, but we lack trained technicians. For 'Ra.One', we had hired 50 foreign-trained technicians. I would love to work in 'Ra.One 2', but it's not easy. For a film with a different genre like 'Ra.One', I'll need at least two to three years for preparation," Shah Rukh told IANS in an interview.

"Ra.One", released in 2011, was an ambitious Rs.150-crore ($30 million) project high on world class VFX. It reportedly had 3,500 VFX shots and Shah Rukh had collaborated with Jeffrey Kleiser, co-founder of US-based Synthesian Studios, to supervise the work done by SRK's Red Chillies VFX team.

Red Chillies VFX, a subdivision of Shah Rukh's motion picture production banner Red Chillies Entertainment, also provides the necessary technology and special effects to other filmmakers in the country.

One of the forthcoming projects his special effects team has worked on is Rakesh Roshan's "Krrish 3", the trailer of which has already received kudos for its visual imagery and technology-induced action sequences.

"For Rakesh Roshan's film, 'Krrish 3', the equipment is from our company. We have trained over 200 technicians in the last five years. They are very good, but the vision has to come from Rakesh Roshan. If you have the vision and technology, the technicians can be changed," added Shah Rukh, stressing on the importance of filmmakers thinking beyond what's easy.

The change is already setting in, King Khan felt. It reflected in films like Anurag Kashyap's "Gangs of Wasseypur" and Anurag Basu's "Barfi!".

"There have always been all kinds of filmmakers who make films like 'Iron Man', 'Batman' and 'Chak De! India' at the same time. It's always parallel. When I did 'DDLJ' ('Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'), there was 'Maya Memsaab' too. There are 'Gangs of Wasseypur' and 'Barfi!', all kinds of films being made. It is good," said Shah Rukh.

His mantra is to reinvent himself by working in different genres.

"I always try to work on a different genre. I feel the industry has given me name, fame and money and I won't ever forgive myself if I won't do anything beneficial for Indian cinema and my fans," he added.
