'Jungle Book Jive' entertaining and engrossing

0
0

Enthralling, engaging and exciting are the words that best define the maiden staging of "Jungle Book Jive" in the capital. The 80-minute musical entertainment show featuring Mowgli, Bagheera and Sher Khan thoroughly entertained children and adults alike.

The five-day event started Wednesday and a string of shows will be performed at the Siri Fort Auditorium.

Fever Entertainment partnered with Australia-based production house Just Because its Children (JBC), to bring the event to an Indian audience for the first time.

Engrossing and mesmerising, the show had famous characters from Rudyard Kipling's novel coming alive on the stage. Spectacular music, grand sets and loads of interactivity with the audience heightened the excitement.

The artists behind the show took five months to prepare the play for Indian market, says the show director Allen Jenner.

"Putting together the show took three months, but yes, we are actually being in creative process for past five months. The entire sound track, storyline and costume designing happened in Australia. In India, we produced the sets," Jenner told IANS.

He found the positive response to the show overwhelming.

"I am quite overwhelmed with the reaction of the kids. They were engaged with the show and they also enjoyed the musical numbers that were performed on the stage. They had fun exploring the jungle, so the reaction was very good," he added.

Interestingly, school kids were cheering and singing "Chaddi pehen ke phool khila hai" while waiting for the show to start.

Children from schools like GD Goenka, Delhi Public School, Sachdeva Public School, Manav Rachna, Venkateshwara International, Anandram Jaipuria were enjoying the classical rivalry between Mowgli and Sherkhan and the strong bond between Moguli and Baloo.

It is a must for every kid.

The tickets can be bought online at www.bookmyshow.com and the price starts from Rs.600.

'Thalaivaa' faces political ire, theatres block bookings

0

Tickets were being sold like hot cakes since Monday for Vijay-starrer Tamil action-drama "Thalaivaa", but on Wednesday afternoon most theatres, including multiplexes, stopped bookings following threat calls from political activists.

Directed by A.L. Vijay, "Thalaivaa", which means leader in Tami, also features Amala Paul, Ragini Nandwani and Abhimanyu Singh in important roles.

Reportedly, members of a political activist group, who claim "Thalaivaa" to be a political film, have warned theatres not to screen the film.

"The tickets for most shows for Friday and Saturday were sold out in most theatres in the city, but since afternoon all theatres have blocked advance booking for 'Thalaivaa' because they are being threatened by political activists," a source from the industry told IANS.

"According to these activists, the film is taking a political dig at some sensible issues, which has not gone down well with these members," he added.

Refuting rumours that "Thalaivaa" is a political film, actor Vijay said the film would release as scheduled on Friday.

"It's a complete family entertainer with all the necessary ingredients including romance, action and comedy. This is not a political film as some miscreants claim. It's not against any political group or individuals," Vijay said in a statement.

"The film is releasing on Aug 9 amidst huge expectations. Few theatres have blocked the bookings temporarily. The producers are now in the middle of a trade related meeting and are expected to sort out the issue by today evening," he added.

Will SRK say 'Chak de!' with 'Chennai Express'?

0
0

A super-duper hit from superstar Shah Rukh Khan is long overdue, says the industry. Though his magnetic personality pulls in fans for each of his films, they were not enough to make his last few films blockbusters. Now trade pundits are hoping that "Chennai Express" would taste box-office success and boost King Khan's fluctuating fortunes.

Shah Rukh has pulled out all stops to make this one a hit - from onground promotions across states, special appearances on the small screen, having the film's music played in restrooms of multiplexes and releasing it on an occasion as holy as Eid on Friday - King Khan has steered "Chennai Express" around all the right quarters.

In the recent past, the 47-year-old has showcased a variety in his roles - if he played a fictional version of himself in "Billu Barber", he portrayed Rizwan Khan, a character suffering from Asperger syndrome in "My Name Is Khan" with vengeance. His "Ra.One", one of the most expensive movies made in the country, gave SRK a superhero avatar, while "Don 2: The Chase Continues" brought him back as the villain, and "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" gave a window to his most-loved romantic streak.

"My Name Is Khan" fared better internationally. SRK himself admitted he could have done better with "Ra.One". And the fizz for "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" died soon after it was released.

Such lulls are not new in the Bollywood badshah's over two-decade-old career. Remember how post-"Main Hoon Na", his films "Swades", "Veer-Zaara" and "Paheli" won critical acclaim, but failed to elicit an overwhelming response at the box office?

Then 2006 release "Don" punched out the bad phase with its tremendous business, followed by two more blockbusters -"Om Shanti Om" and "Chak De! India" in the following year.

Now people are hoping for a winner in the Rohit Shetty directorial "Chennai Express", which sees SRK romancing his "Om Shanti Om" co-star Deepika Padukone.

More so, since it is only Farhan Akhtar-starrer "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" which has been holding the fort at the cash registers since four weeks now. Smaller films have come and gone, but the demand for "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", a biopic on ace athlete Milkha Singh, has been pacing ahead, crossing the Rs. 100 crore mark on Bollywood's racing track.

"Chennai Express", with its huge marketing campaigns and tie-ups, heavy duty promotions, eclectic catchy music, as well as a grand release of over 3,500 screens in the country and 700 screens abroad, is expected to outshine "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag". It is also being dubbed in nine languages - English, French, Spanish, Arabic, German, Hebrew, Dutch, Turkish and Malay.

"'Chennai Express' is a commercial entertainer and has an obvious and enormous demand overseas with Deepika Padukone's and Shah Rukh Khan's fan base," says Amrita Pandey, executive director, International Distribution Studios, Disney UTV.

Nine months after failing to impress his fans with his true-romantic avatar in "Jab Tak Hai Jaan", SRK has taken the commercial action-comedy genre route, which is usually the trademark of his arch rival Salman Khan.

"'Chennai Express' is a comedy film with a love story, but it's definitely not like 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' or 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. It's a family entertainer. There's a little action too," SRK stated recently.

Will "Chennai Express" chug away to success with all its steam?

'Thalaivaa' release still uncertain in Tamil Nadu

0
0

The release of Tamil action-drama "Thalaivaa" Friday seems unlikely as theatres and multiplexes blocked bookings for the Vijay-starrer film after receiving threats from a group.

A students’ body called Tamil Nadu Oppressed Students Revolutionary Force threatened theatres and multiplexes here Wednesday, following which bookings for the film were blocked.

Members of the group threatened violence if "Thalaivaa", produced by Chandraprakash Jain, was screened in the state Friday.

According to the group, income tax on the money invested by the distributor of the film Vendhar Movies has been evaded. Besides, the money has been earned by exploiting students of SRM group of educational institutions, it is alleged.

"Thalaivaa" is being distributed by Vendhar Movies, who own SRM group, one of the biggest educational institutions in the state.

"The group has alleged that Vendhar Movies has invested a large sum of tax-evaded money in the film and believe that the money was earned by exploiting the students of their institutions. They have threatened to resort to violence if the film is released in the state," a member of Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association (TTOA), told IANS.

After the emergency meeting held Wednesday between the producer of "Thalaivaa" and TTOA, consensus could not be reached and it is believed that government intervention has been sought.

"We have requested actor Vijay and his father S.A. Chandrasekhar along with the director of the film to seek the government's intervention in the matter. We can't take this issue lightly because the film is expected to be released in nearly 500 theatres in Tamil Nadu and, therefore, we need to beef up security," the TTOA member said.

On Wednesday, a group also alleged that "Thalaivaa", which means leader in Tamil, is a political film and is believed to be taking a dig at some sensitive issues.

Actor Vijay, however, clarified that "Thalaivaa" is an apolitical film.

"It's a complete family entertainer with all the necessary ingredients including romance, action and comedy. This is not a political film as some miscreants claim. It's not against any political group or individuals," Vijay said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the film is expected to release as scheduled on Friday overseas.

"We're not sure about the situation in Tamil Nadu, but we have been asked to release the film here by the overseas distributor," said a distributor of "Thalaivaa" in the US.

The release of the film in other states as well remains unaffected.

Directed by A.L Vijay, "Thalaivaa" also features Amala Paul, Ragini Nandwani and Abhimanyu Singh.

Abhishek wants Aamir to play 'good guy' in 'Dhoom 4'

For actor Abhishek Bachchan, it was an honour to work with Aamir Khan, who plays a villain in "Dhoom 3". He hopes to work with Aamir again in the fourth instalment of the franchise, and says he could play the "good guy".

"'Dhoom' is 'Dhoom' and it's the third time round. Jai and Ali are back and this time we have Aamir with us! What an honour for any actor to get the opportunity to work with Aamir. You just get to learn so much by just observing him," the 37-year-old said here at the unveiling of the Mandate magazine cover, featuring him and his megastar father Amitabh Bachchan.

Abhishek only has a string of praises for Aamir.

"He (Aamir) is so helpful and so caring and giving as an actor that I am honoured to have worked with him. Let's see, we'll try and convince him to come back in 'Dhoom 4' as a good guy," he added.

Asked about the trend of heroes playing the bad guy in films, Abhishek said it's nothing new.

"We have had our mainstream heroes doing villain roles for very long. I did it in 'Yuva' in 2004, my dad did it in 'Parwana' (1971). I think heroes have always done it and it's got to do with the character, it's not about being a good guy or a bad guy," Abhishek said.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan played negative roles in movies "Darr" (1993), "Baazigar" (1993), "Anjaam" (1994) and the recent "Don" franchise.

Akshay Kumar will be seen as a baddie in "Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara!". Ajay Devgn played a negative character in "Deewangee" (2002).

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan was elated when Rajinikanth called him up and praised the "naughty" number "Thalaiva tribute (Lungi dance)", a special track in honour of the legendary actor in "Chennai Express".

"He (Rajinikanth) called me three days back and he saw the video on YouTube. He said it’s very good, very naughty, very sweet. He said, 'It’s really nice that you have done this song'. I'm very happy that Rajini sir is happy with the song and the family is happy," Shah Rukh told reporters here at a press conference Wednesday.

The 47-year-old actor said that he called Rajinikanth and his daughter Soundarya, and took his permission for the song, sung by rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh.

"As gracious, humble and sweet he is, he said, 'Why are you doing it, sir? You are such a big star yourself'. He said it so sweetly. I told him, 'I am sending you the song and please let me know how do you like it'. We shot the song in a day-and-a-half," said SRK.

"I thought the timing is good. If you don't pay a tribute to Rajini sir in a film called 'Chennai Express', then it is incomplete," he added.

Abhishek tries to be 'as good as' dad Amitabh

0

For actor Abhishek Bachchan, his megastar father Amitabh Bachchan is the greatest actor, who inspires him and several other actors to give their best shot and dedication to every film.

Asked about his favourite actor, Abhishek said: "For me, as a fan and as an actor, it's going to Amitabh Bachchan. But honestly speaking, having been an actor for 13 years now, I know what it takes to stand in front of a camera and give a shot.

"I really think anybody who manages to perform in front of the camera with all the pressure is a great actor."

Abhishek spoke here Wednesday at the unveiling of the Mandate magazine cover featuring him and Big B in the same frame.

The 37-year-old says his father's films have always inspired him, and his dedication is commendable.

"All his films have inspired me since I was a kid... since 'Saat Hindustani' to now. I feel the best thing about him is whether the film works or not, his work is always good and his dedication is great," he said.

"I can't think of a film where someone didn't like his work. We just try and be as good as him," added the proud son.

Nevertheless, he believes his profession needs guts - so whether one is a newcomer or a veteran, everyone is a good actor.

"Any actor, be it in their first film or whether they have done 100 films, from Yusuf saab (Dilip Kumar) to a newcomer, I think they are all great actors. It takes a lot of guts to do what we do and it is difficult," he said.

Abhishek is currently shooting for "Dhoom 3" and also has Karan Johar's production "Dostana 2" and Farah Khan's directorial "Happy New Year" in his kitty.
