Sonam Kapoor breaks into sensuous jig for Rohit Bal

0
0

Vivacious actress Sonam Kapoor was at her sensuous and playful best as she walked the ramp for fashion designer Rohit Bal at the India Bridal Fashion Week here.

She broke into a jig Friday to the "sexy" cabaret number "Aa jaane jaan" from the 1969 Hindi film "Inteqam" playing in the background.

With spellbinding ambience - large pink and white lotus props laid across and above the ramp, all lit-up; evergreen Bollywood tunes; regal wardrobe; and a showstopper who did complete justice to the mood and theme, it was a visual delight.

The heart-warming "Lag jaa gale" ("Woh Kaun Thi", 1964) set the pace for the show, and then the audience couldn't stop humming and swaying to melodies like "Yeh hai reshmi zulfon ka andhera" ("Mere Sanam", 1965), "Baahon mein chale aao" ("Anamika", 1973) and "Aaiye meherbaan" ("Howrah Bridge", 1958), moving on to more contemporary "Kehna hi kya" ("Bombay", 1995) and an instrumental version of "Roja jaaneman" ("Roja", 1992), only to return to "Aa jaane jaan".

"It felt great because these songs are from the 1950s and 1960s, the golden period of Indian cinema...I have always wanted to act to that kind of music, so it's enough for me to walk to it, and listen to it and be a part of it in some creative way," Sonam told reporters post the show.

In a cream-coloured "lehenga choli" with understated gold embroidery and "kundan" jewellery, she, however, hardly made a coy bride, blowing kisses and laughing out in her carefree demeanour. The "jhoomar" on the side of her head and other ornaments caught many eyeballs.

Bal's "Mulmul" collection saw an interesting melange of the pristine simplicity of muslin and grandeur of velvet, with different forms of embroidery and surface ornamentation.

The veteran designer used antique Kashmiri embroidery on muslin to tie-and-dye techniques on fabrics like "chanderi" and voiles. Rich jewel tones like royal blue and regal red combined with ivory muslin gave the ensemble a unique grandeur.

Victorian collars, structured corsets, gowns, "achkans", "bandhgalas", "angarkhas" and saris dominated the collection. It was replete with myriad options for both men and women.

Of his collection, Bal said: "I wanted to bring in a certain amount of luxury...very understated, very elegant...truly inspired by Sonam Kapoor."

Acknowledging appreciation for the ambience, the designer told IANS: "Since the collection was fairly Indian, I wanted to use some of our favourite Indian songs... mostly sensuous, sexy, romantic and very naughty ones."

"I believe it is very important for people to relate to what they are listening and seeing during a show. So, it is important to be able to create an ambience where everyone feels comfortable in... and that's what I wanted to do," he added.

Well, that's what he truly managed to do - one could see designer Poonam Bhagat humming the songs while J.J. Valaya took a front row seat to applaud Bal's designs.

For Bal, the success of the show was in the fact that Sonam was already dancing to "Aa jaane jaan", one of his favourite tracks, even before he could reach out to her to take a bow for the presentation.

"I looked behind and I saw Sonam already dancing, and that was the most important part of the show. She was happy, I was thrilled and there was a lot of positive energy all around... That's all that you want as a designer after a show," he said.

Shiva holds 'Sonna Puriyadhu' together

0
0

Film: "Sonna Puriyadhu"; Cast: Shiva, Vasundhara Kashyap, Mano Bala, Vatsala and Meera Krishnan; Director: Krishnan Jayaraj; Rating: **

Shiva's films guarantee entertainment, but "Sonna Puriyadhu", which revolves around Shiva, who is commitment phobic and hates the idea of marriage, fails in the effort of delivering a wholesome entertainer. What it does manage to deliver finally is not even remotely close to other films of Shiva such as "Chennai 600028" and "Thillu Mullu".

Handicapped by a weak screenplay, the movie is satirical and funny in parts, but never makes you laugh out loud like you're expected to do in a Shiva-starrer.

Shiva plays a dubbing artiste, lending voice to English films. He has an aversion towards the idea of marriage and hates being in a commitment. However, his life takes unexpected turns when his mother blackmails him to meet a girl (Anjali) of her choice. But Shiva has plans of his own to rule out the idea of marriage with Anjali.

What follows is funny occasionally, but rather juvenile in its attempt. The idea to stall the marriage of Anjali and Shiva doesn't quite go down well with the audiences, who are left with the option of either laughing for the heck of it or ignore the passe effort to entertain.

Some of the best humour comes from the scene where Shiva and his friend are seen dubbing for English films. It's hilarious and certainly becomes the perfect icing on the cake to provide some momentary laughs in the film.

What happens between Anjali and Shiva reach an end most of us would've expected midway. Had the director planned to have an alternate ending then I'm sure people would have loved the effort put in to build an unconventional premise.

The role played by Vatsala as Shiva's grandmother is delightful to watch. It's surprising how this one particular character is so modern and forward thinking, while the film struggles to stay away from certain cliches that could have been easily avoided.

Shiva did all that he could to save the film from going down the path that several comedy flicks over the years have travelled. He doesn't have a strong supporting cast that he could rely on. Vasundhara doesn't play her part with conviction, while the rest of the actors have nearly meaningless parts to essay.

Krishnan handles the film promisingly, but you don't see the urge in him to make it a memorable film. "Sonna Puriyadhu" is definitely an effort worth taking notice but it doesn't make you want to cheer for it.

John delivers subtle performance in 'Madras Cafe'

Film director Shoojit Sircar says he believes in extracting subtle performances from his actors, and for "Madras Cafe", he has done the same for John Abraham's character.

John plays the lead in the movie, which is also produced by him.

"Sometimes we make the performances loud in our Hindi films, but my films have subtle performances, so I have kept him (John) under tone in all the performances (in the film). You will not feel that he is acting, I have kept him in the real zone," Sircar said here in an interview.

"To do that was not tough as we had rehearsed a lot, discussed a lot and I think we have managed in doing that," he added.

The film is based on terrorism and civil war and John plays an army officer, who is appointed by RAW to conduct covert operations in Sri Lanka.

About his inputs for the character, Sircar said: "I had to give him knowledge on this subject and tell him how to perform as I believe in subtle performances."

Slated to release Aug 23, the film features Nargis Fakhri as the female lead.

Salman is Rajkumar Santoshi's lucky mascot?

0
0

After "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani", director Rajkumar Santoshi has once again roped in superstar Salman Khan for a cameo in his forthcoming film "Phata Poster Nikhla Hero". He says it's a mere co-incidence and not because he considers the actor his lucky mascot.

"I don't think like that. It was more a need of the script," Santoshi said here Friday at a press meet of the film.

"In that film ('Ajab...'), Katrina (Kaif) was a big fan of Salman and an incident happens where Salman comes in front of her. In this film, Shahid has been shown as a big fan of film stars, particularly Salman, one of the most happening stars today.

"So it is just a co-incidence, not because of the lucky mascot thing," he added.

However, Santoshi says if "Phata Poster Nikla Hero" works, then he will definitely start calling Salman his lucky mascot.

"I wish it happens, success repeats itself. Then third time I will definitely go to Salman saying that you are lucky for me, come in my film and do a scene," he said.

"Phata Poster Nikhla Hero" stars Shahid Kapoor in the lead besides Ileana D'Cruz. The film hits theatres Aug 23.

Neena Gupta keen to play woman cop

Veteran actress Neena Gupta has essayed myriad roles over the years, but she has now expressed a desire to play a police officer.

"I am open to comedy and serious roles. I would love to do a cop's role. I am very fascinated by it," Neena told IANS.

The 54-year-old actress has been a part of both commercial as well as non-commercial cinema, and has done her fair share of work on the small screen. She says it is the role role, script and director which pull her into a project.

"For me the most important is the role, then the script and director. It doesn't matter whether is is a commercial film or not. I will act in the same way. I don't change my style of acting," she said.

Neena was last seen in Manish Tiwary's "Issaq".

She admits "it is tough to get roles for my age group".

"If something is offered to me which has potential for acting, I take it up. I realised here (in 'Issaq') my role is very good. Although some of my scenes have been cut as the movie was too long, but the role is interesting and so is the get up of the character," she said.

The actress has earlier been a part of TV shows like "Khandaan", "Bharat Ek Khoj", "Saans", "Siski", "Kyun Hota Hai Pyarrr", "Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin" and "Ladies Special". She said that recently nothing interesting has come her way as far as the small screen is concerned.

"I haven't been offered a role which I would jump to do. This is why I was waiting. I am waiting for something nice to come my way. I have not signed anything so far and nothing has come my way," she said.

'Bhaag Milkha...' races ahead of new releases

0
0

Filmmakers tried to woo movie buffs with subjects as diverse as revenge comedy, erotic thriller, tragic love story and candyfloss campus romance this Friday, but audiences are still flocking to the halls to catch "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag".

Movies that hit the theatres Friday include "Bajatey Raho", "Nasha", "Issaq", "Love U Soniyo" and Hollywood film "The Wolverine".

But viewers are still buying tickets to watch ace athlete Milkha Singh's life story in "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", which released July 12.

According to trade experts, Hugh Jackman's Hollywood film "The Wolverine" has performed better than the Bollywood films this Friday.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh is not surprised with the Hollywood film's performance.

"As expected, Hollywood overpowers Bollywood at the domestic box office. 'The Wolverine' collects Rs 3.15 crore nett on Friday (all languages)," he posted on Twitter.

The movie's collection are expected to rise.

"'The Wolverine' had 65 percent occupancy on opening day. We are expecting it to rise to 80 this weekend," Puneet Sahay of Spice Cinemas, told IANS.

"Bajatey Raho", which features Dolly Ahluwalia, Ranvir Shorey, Vinay Pathak and Tusshar Kapoor, and Prateik and Amyra Dastur-starrer "Issaq", had an average opening.

"The former had 46 percent occupancy and the latter 50 percent. The bold 'Nasha' followed them with 35 percent occupancy. 'Love U Soniyo' didn't have a good opening as there was only 10 to 15 percent occupancy for it on the first day," Sahay said.

While "Nasha" marked the entry of controversy queen Poonam Pandey in Bollywood, veteran actress Rati Agnihotri's son Tanuj Virwani found his launchpad in "Luv U Soniyo".

The buzz for these movies was high thanks to heavy promotion, but "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" still holds a strong clout.

Adarsh has declared Farhan Akhtar starrer as a super hit.

"'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'" collected approximately Rs 26.05 crore in second week. Grand total is Rs. 79.79 crore. It is a super hit," Adarsh posted on Twitter.

Sahay said that even on weekdays, the biopic is doing well.

"On weekdays there was 60 percent occupancy and this weekend we are expecting it to go up to 80 percent," he said.

The Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra-directorial was declared tax free in Maharashtra, Delhi and Goa.

Will not comment on relationship with Salman: SRK

Actor Shah Rukh Khan Saturday refused to comment on the relationship with star Salman Khan.

The two superstars, who were not on talking terms, hugged each other at an Iftaar party in Mumbai recently, fuelling rumours of a patchup.

"The personal relationship that I share, the altercations, the truce, the love and discussions...we don't like to talk about those in public and we won't begin to do that," Shah Rukh told reporters here while promoting his forthcoming film "Chennai Express".

Salman and Shah Rukh hugged each other at an Iftaar party in Mumbai July 21, indicating the two actors who were not on talking terms after an incident at Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif's birthday bash in 2008, may have made up.

The actors, who were attending Congress leader Baba Siddique's annual Iftaar party after a long time, faced each other, shook hands and hugged, when Siddiqui asked them to meet each other.

Both Shah Rukh and Salman seemed perfectly fine, the latter being the one who took the initiative to shake hands and hug Shah Rukh.

Dubbed as the "Badshaah of Bollywood", Shah Rukh fervently expressed his desire to do something for West Bengal, of which he is the brand ambassador.

"I feel very humbled that I am the brand ambassador. I think I should take some time out. I am going to come down to Kolkata after I release 'Chennai Express', and spend a day and figure out what I can do," Shah Rukh said.

SRK defends Kolkata on women's safety

0

Defending Kolkata in the wake of the rising incidents of crime against women in the city, superstar Shah Rukh Khan Saturday said not only Kolkata, but the whole world had issues when it came to the safety of women.

Khan, who is the state's brand ambassador, came to his "favourite" city's rescue by pointing out that safety of women is a global concern: "This is very personal. You can't pick on a city because it's easiest to blame the system...the whole country... the whole world actually has issues as far as safety of women is concerned."

The star also stressed the need to teach children to respect women.

"We can always turn around and say that it's sad...but I think the younger people... and I feel I am young...we must change the concept of how we bring up our children at home. The thing is the mentality of not telling the boys how to be gentle, and good and respectful. So I have started doing that," Khan told reporters during the promotion of his film "Chennai Express" here.

"When I talk to my son about girls, I don't talk about girlfriends. I tell him: 'Don't break a girl's heart, treat it gently and there is no way that you can look at an atrocity done on a women and if you do that you will not be forgiven by your father and mother'. So we should start from there," Khan said.

Downplaying the issue of surrogacy and his new born, SRK cleared the air by stating:" I didn't do it to promote surrogacy in the country...I did it to have a baby...I don't know how to explain that."

Directed by Rohit Shetty, "Chennai Express" is slated for an Aug 9 release. It stars Deepika Padukone as the lead actress.
