Mahesh Bhatt criticises cancellation of Ghulam Ali's concert

After the cancellation of Pakistani ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali's concert here following threats from Shiv Sena, veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has criticised the move, saying cultural ties should not be snapped on the basis of political talks between countries.

The 75-year-old singer was scheduled to perform here and in Pune this week as part of the fourth death anniversary tribute to late singer Jagjit Singh.

But the performance was called off on Wednesday after Shiv Sena threatened to disrupt his live concert here.

“It's a familiar nightmare that keeps on recurring in this part of our country and one has seen irrespective of the government in the seat of power, the peace activists of the civil society aiming for keeping cultural ties intact with Pakistan have to face roadblocks like this,” Bhatt told IANS over phone.

“But even if level talks are not taking place, let the civil society be given rights to keep their cultural ties intact through the performing arts,” he added.

The filmmaker, who has given a sample of his work to the neighbouring country with a play based on his 1989 film "Daddy" staged in Pakistan earlier this year, noted that despite Prime Minster Narendra Modi's effort to bridge the gap between countries, nothing seems to have changed.

"During the Congress regime, we had to go through similar scenario where Pakistani actors and performers were obstructed from performing," he said.

"Then came this new government and in the beginning there were signals given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who sent an invitation to Nawaz Sharif, saying that they wish to bridge the distances that exist between the two countries and nothing much happened on that front," he added.

Ali, who made an entry in Indian cinema with his popular song "Chupke chupke raat din" for B.R. Chopra's "Nikaah", also said that he is hurt and sad.

Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra on Thursday extended an invite to Ali to perform in the capital.

After their superhero drama “Ra.One”, director Anubhav Sinha has once again collaborated with superstar Shah Rukh Khan. This time they have come together for a concert, through which they will raise funds for the welfare of distressed farmers of the country.

Shah Rukh will perform at the fundraiser 'Son of Soil' for the benefit of farmers, who have been committing suicide due to drought-like conditions and lack of funds. The three-hour long concert will be held on November 28, but Sinha has to zero in on the venue, read a statement.

"It will be either Delhi NCR or Mumbai. It depends on which city rakes up maximum funds," said the "Gulaab Gang" director.

Besides Bollywood's 'Badshah', music composer duo Vishal-Shekhar, singer Ankit Tiwari and actor-anchor Manish Paul have agreed to be a part of this event. Other celebrities are expected to join in soon.

"The idea is to get influential stakeholders signed on to create a nationwide awareness about this problem," Sinha said.

In addition to this, Sinha will also film a live documentary on the entire concert and the workings behind-the-scenes.

The 50-year-old filmmaker hasn't met the farmers yet, but has formulated a disbursal committee, comprising of senior journalists and finance experts, to oversee the fund transfers to farmers.

This is the latest initiative from Bollywood for the upheaval of farmers, after Akshay Kumar and Nana Patekar expressed support.

As his comedy drama “Do Dooni Chaar” (DDC) completed five years of existence, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor walked down the memory lane, and pondered over why the team never attempted to make a sequel of the film,

The movie, which won the National Award for best Hindi feature film, also featured his wife Neetu Singh.

“Time flies. Five years of DDC. Habib we should have attempted a sequel. Anyway, a film we the team will cherish,” Rishi tweeted.

The Habib Faisal directorial weaved a story of a middle class family dreaming of buying a car and how they save money for it during inflation. The film, which released on October 8, 2010, presented the hardships of a middle-class school teacher and his family in a comic way.

“Do Dooni Chaar” marked the on screen reunion of the Rishi-Neetu Singh pair as a lead couple, who previously acted in several hits during the 1970s like “Khel Khel Mein” and “Rafoo Chakkar”.

The couple walked into the big screen again with “Besharam” in 2013 with their son Ranbir, but the on screen family get together failed to appeal to the movie-goers.

It seems a tight schedule with back to back shoots and promotional activities has taken a toll of Irrfan Khan's health. The actor is said to be unwell and is experiencing weakness due to the exertion.

Irrfan has had a packed year starting with “Piku”, following which “Jurassic World” was released. He even shot for his Hollywood film “Inferno”, which also stars Tom Hanks.

The actor, whose film "Talvar" hit the screens last week while his "Jazbaa" came out on Friday, had to skip promotions and planned screenings of his latest Bollywood outing.

According to a source close to him, Irrfan could not be a part of “Jazbaa” premiere and planned screening for “Talvar” due to his ill-health.

He had to skip the screening of “Talvar”, based on the 2008 murder of 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar and her family's domestic servant Hemraj, for which he had invited Deepika Padukone on Wednesday night, while he stayed away from “Jazbaa” premiere on Thursday.

“Irrfan was keen to show his 'Piku' co- star Deepika the film and the duo were in touch for the same. However at the last hour he fell ill. Irrfan gave his team special instructions to ensure Deepika was comfortable. He even tried to make it for the premiere of 'Jazbaa'. However, his health did not allow him to,” the source said.

Veteran actor Prem Chopra, best known for his negative roles in films like “Kati Patang”, “Dostana”, “Kranti” and “Phool Bane Angaarey”, says films nowadays don't feature “purely dark villians” as they are showed in more of “grey shades”.

“There are no more purely dark villains. Like heroes, the negative character are also in the shades of grey today,” Prem said in a statement.

The 80-year-old will next be seen in “Udanchhoo” playing the role of 'Baba G'. He and actress Bruna Abdullah were shooting for a 'Pravachan' scene earlier this week here.

In the sequence, Prem is seen sitting on a grand thrown, on a stage decorated with garlands and flowers, dressed in imperial blue robe and a yellow lustrous stole.

Directed by Vipin Parashar, “Udanchhoo” is a layered comedy and is inspired from real life events. The protagonist and his family are sucked into the devious plot of the greedy ‘Baba G’.

After launching the album of Paoli Dam starrer "Yaara Silly Silly" with a soothing romantic track "Sathia", the makers unveiled another melodious track "Behki" on Tuesday, which has composer Ankit Tiwari's signature music style.

The song's lyrics have been penned by Sandeep Nath -- the name behind Ankit's superhit track "Sunn raha hai na tu" among other hits.

"Behki" has been rendered by Mehak Suri and Shaadab, who has also sung "Sathia" along with Ankit.

"It's unbelievable for me that I got to work with music star Ankit Tiwari so early in my career. And that too not one but two songs, which I personally think are the best songs of the album. Singing with Ankit for 'Sathia' was such a learning experience for me and singing on his composed tune for 'Behki' was also equally enriching for me," Mahek said.

"I'm extremely grateful to him and hoping to collaborate with him as early as possible. I'm fully confident that the industry will notice my talent with these numbers," she added.

"The music of 'Yaara Silly Silly' is synonymous with the film. It has a beautiful effect with the visuals of the film. It's not a typical hero-heroine love story, but has an interesting swing in it, having an enjoyable train journey and other sweet moments. I enjoyed composing for this album because I got to experiment a lot with my music," said Ankit.

In the music video of the song, lead actress Paoli Dam is seen romancing Parambrata Chatterjee in scenic locales.

"Yaara Silly Silly" is jointly produced by Reena Bhushan Suri and Neena Subhash Sehgal under the banner Movee Dreems. The film is slated to release on November 6.

At the launch of the show here, Bhatt said that when he was approached by the makers, he immediately agreed to take it forward as he felt humbled to get such an opportunity.

“When I heard the whole idea and the kind of narratives that have been fashioned, I was humbled by the idea that I had to come face to face with my own ignorance. I did not know all these people whom I claimed to know, I did not know that the great Indian filmmaker V. Shantaram made a living by giving out lamps at theatres while the artists performed and it was there where Shantaram ji first learnt what drama was all about,” he said at a media interaction here.

“It is a unique show where I am learning about my own ancestors, and there was a time which existed prior to even my birth,” he added.

At the press conference, a video clipping giving a sneak peak into the journey of the show, which will be aired on The EPIC Channel, was also showcased.

Talking about the show, Mahesh Samat, managing director, The EPIC Channel, shared that the show wil bring forth the journey of young, ambitious people who stood for what they believed in and made their dream come true against all odds.

“Who better than Mr. Bhatt who has won many national awards and made Hindi cinema his way, with stories he has believed in and who is responsible for countless careers in the film industry? Mahesh Bhatt has been associated with these iconic creators in various forms throughout his illustrious career,” he said in a statement.

Doing Pele film a big honour: A.R. Rahman

Music superstar A.R. Rahman, who is composing the music for Pele biopic, says the opportunity is a big honour and meeting Brazilian football legend was a "dream come true".

"Pele is a big legend in sports and doing his movie is such a big honour," Rahman told media persons at a interaction for "Jai Ho", a documentary on his life to be telecast on Discovery channel. He also said that when he had read the film's script, he loved the whole idea of it.

In a recent interview, Rahman had said that he was a "zero in sports" and "he composed music for Pele without knowing him".

"The music I'm making is on the personality, it's an emotion, you're not physically involved. To follow sports, it requires energy and 'mehnat' (hard work). And for me, all my work, all my energy is from music. From childhood that's been my focus with undivided attention," he had said.

The biopic on Pele is titled "Pele" and is being written and directed by Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist. Regarding the kind of music we can expect from the film, Rahman said: "It's really edgy, the mode of making is the school of Danny Boyle, but it's very Pele - very Brazilian. It's got that influence and I loved it."

Rahman met Pele at his special birthday celebration in Kolkata along with cricket legend Sourav Ganguly and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. About the experience of the event, he said, " It was fantastic, it was a dream come true. Going to Kolkata, meeting the chief minister, meeting the prince Ganguly, it was like the icing on the cake. It was literally the cake as the chief minister gave me the cake."

"Jai Ho" will premiere on October 26.

Not only lyrics, even the music is sometimes atrocious: Prasoon Joshi

$

Ad-guru Prasoon Joshi, who has also penned down lyrics for films while being the CEO and chairman (Asia Pacific) of McCann World group India, says that sometimes, both the lyrics and the music in cinema look atrocious.

Joshi, who has songs like "Taare zameen par" and "Chand sifarish" in his kitty believes that today, besides the lyrics being "cheap", even the music is so.

"If you think that the lyrics are cheap, even the music is cheap at times; it's just that sometimes we don't know how to call music cheap. You can't say that only the words have become sub-standard and objectionable. There is some music which is atrocious," Joshi told IANS in an interview.

"A bad creative product is a bad creative product. Indeed, there is some work which is really sub-standard, but I know that they don't survive the test of time," the 44-year-old added.

Are double innuendo songs the road to success?

Not at all, retorted the Padma Shri awardee, adding that one had to guard children from these kinds of songs.

"If we cannot protect our children then there is something wrong with our society. We definitely need to take offense to things which are not appropriate for children. Such songs are extremely irresponsible and I condemn this quality of work," he said.

According to the lyricist of Silk Route's "Dooba Dooba Rehta Hoon", artists who cannot fathom the impact of such songs on children have no right to be called creative.

"They definitely should be shown the mirror and told that there is something like conscience," Joshi said.

On the flip side, people who bought such songs were also complicit.

"We should understand that it is not right to blame only the creators. You also have to understand that there is somebody who buys them; somebody plays them at a place where children are listening.

Having written lyrics for music maestro A.R Rehman's "Zariya" and "Jhelum Naina" for "Coke Studio", Joshi contended that one can jam more while working on an independent album where there is not much of a time constraint, unlike what Bollywood demands.

"The last time I worked with A.R Rehman for 'Coke Studio', the deadlines were very tight. But with a platform like 'Coke Studio' and private albums, you get more freedom; as an independent musician you can jam more," the lyricist of several indi-pop albums said.

Asked how he balances Bollywood with the advertising world, Joshi quipped that it just happens.

"If you have to do it, then you have to do it. And I want to do both well. Advertising is my profession; it's my day job but film projects are something I am very selective about," he said.

"I choose very few (films) and do so when I feel I must. There is a very specific reason for all the projects I do, whether it is 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' or 'Fanaa'. With every project I take up, I do something I have a calling for. I feel that I must do it because this inspires me. And I have to get it out of my system. Therefore, I do it for a very specific reason," Joshi added.

It's a known fact that every creative person sometimes faces a "writer's block". How does one deal with this? Joshi, who has a string of highly-acclaimed ad campaigns to his credit such as those for Chlormint and Coca-Cola, advised that one should not panic or become adamant while dealing with a situation like this.

"Every writer faces a writer's block. Dealing with it... just don't be too adamant, do something else."

Where does he get his ideas from?

"I don't choose ideas, ideas choose me. I am lucky that they pass through me. You just have to accept it and wait for the inspirational moment. If your intent is right, the inspirational moment will come," Joshi concluded.

He became an instant hit with his single "Hai dhuan", tried his luck on the big screen before navigating his way into television. Actor-musician Vikas Bhalla says with the independent music flourishing at its own rhythm in India he is planning to revive his career as a musician, and is even ready with a new single.

He is also eager to make a come back in Bollywood. Vikas has come on board for a reality TV show "Bigg Boss Nau", and noted that he will release his new single when he comes out of the 'Bigg Boss' house.

"I released a single in late 1990s and it did quite well making me popular. With independent music culture making a comeback, I'm planning to release new music. I hope 'Bigg Boss' acts as a stepping stone for my comeback into music. I will release a single when I come out of the house," Vikas told IANS over phone from Lonavla before entering the 'Bigg Boss’ house.

He added that though the song is ready, he can't divulge any other details.

Vikas has entered the reality show, in which celebrities have to live in an isolated house for about three months sans any luxury. The 'double trouble' ninth season, which is hosted by Bollywood’s superstar Salman Khan, went on air on Sunday on Colors channel.

Vikas, a trained singer, started his acting career way back in 1996 with "Sauda", but shifted to the small screen soon after a few of his films failed to make it big. But lady luck smiled at his television career as shows like "Sanjog Se Bani Sanjini" and "Shanno Ki Shaadi" earned him a lot of popularity.

The actor said: "I would love to comeback in movies. The type of movies, which were made then was very different. I would like to do some good movies. And I hope my stint in 'Bigg Boss' works in that aspect."

The reality show has earned a notorious reputation for its controversies and constant brickbats. Vikas notes that the proposal to be a part of the show left him shocked as well.

"I'm not a controversial person at all and when they offered me I was wondering why me. So, I said yes to get an answer to this why," said the father of two.

Vikas is jittery about his temper issues as he says "I'm scared and hope I don't say anything wrong to anyone. I get angry when rubbed wrong way".

"Jai Ho", a 90-minute documentary tracing the journey of music maestro A. R. Rahman, is all set to premiere on October 26 on Discovery channel.

The Oscar-winning composer said initially, he did not find it "necessary" to have a documentary based on him, but later director Umesh Aggarwal convinced him.

"There were lot of offers before to do a documentary on me, but I felt it was not necessary. And after the Oscars and the brouhaha happened, I felt that people could get some kind of inspiration with my life through the journey of my life, through the way I'm making music," Rahman said.

"And then Umesh, an award-winning filmmaker, contacted me and he said that initially it was only for the consulates all over. It was the kind of exposure which was good, but I didn't know that all this would happen," he added.

However, the composer added that he "cannot watch myself".

"People living abroad and having the Indian flag, they deserve to know about the people of India. I didn't know it'll come out charmingly like how it's made. I cannot watch myself and hate to watch myself," he said.

Aggarwal said that it's the first "definite feature" on Rahman.

"I am confident that this film will convey his astonishing success and global phenomenon," he said.

Shot across the world, the film includes interviews of Aamir Khan, Danny Boyle, Mani Ratnam, Gulzar, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Shekhar Kapoor, Subhash Ghai and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber among others.

The film traces Rahman's journey from achieving superstar status in India with numerous hits in a very short time to working with big names in the west.

Some of his personal experiences are also going to be showcased in the film.

"Jai Ho" has been created for the Public Service Broadcasting Trust.

Filmmaker Pan Nalin says that his forthcoming film "Angry Indian Goddesses" isn't about slamming men, but is basically a celebration of womanhood.

"This film is not at all about male-bashing. There are many men if you see the film, there is a love story and there is an appreciation of women and celebration of womanhood. There can be few girls who can come together and have a good time and if 7-8 of them come together, they'll obviously talk about issues," said Nalin at the trailer launch of the film here.

"You talk to any woman or girl in India and within 10-15 minutes you'll know about certain issues they're facing or that they have some angst or they are upset," he added.

The film is reportedly set to release on November 12 along with Salman Khan starrer "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo".

When asked about the clash, Nalin said: "I think without risk, there has never been any transformation historically. If we have to, we will fight it all the way."

"We've been fighting, in terms of the way we've made the movie. Raising the funds was a big fight, to release it was a big fight, to take it around the world was a big fight. More than 30 countries have acquired the film, that again was a big fight," he added.

"Angry Indian Goddesses" follows the stories of seven girls. It narrates the tale of how Frieda, essayed by actress Sarah-Jane Dias, invites her closest girlfriends to Goa to announce her wedding, and it all turns into a wild bachelorette party.

The film is an emotional roller coaster ride which unfolds characters amidst fun, chaos and a series of complications that follow - driving the seven girls to the edge as they transform into 'angry Indian goddesses'.

The all-out female buddy film boasts of a line-up that includes Sandhya Mridul, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Anushka Manchanda, Amrit Maghera, Rajshri Deshpande and Pavleen Gujral.

"I always try to do different roles," he added.

Directed by Kanu Behl, "Titli" will release in India on October 30.
