'Luv U Soniyo' trite and impassive (IANS Movie Review)

0
0

Film""Luv You Soniyo"; Cast: Tanuj Virwani, Neha Hinge, Bunty Garewal and Howard Rosameyer; Director: Joe Rajan; Rating: Not applicable

Uh-oh! She is engaged to marry a man who isn't right for her. Mr. Right is right around corner, making his fidgety presence felt in nearly every frame of this launch pad for actress Rati Agnihotri's son Tanuj.

It's only a matter of time before the girl Soniyo, played by debutant Neha Hinge, throws off the wrong ring for the right zing.

Zing is the element curiously unobtainable in this feel-young story. So many youngsters dancing, singing and trying to tell us they're having fun...but we remain unconvinced till the end.

"Luv You Soniyo" isn't telling us anything we haven't seen in numerous films before, ranging from the iconic "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" to the overrated "Rockstar", girls in our films have somehow been constantly confused about which guy to marry.

Maybe they should just read the credit titles more carefully.

This film's credits tell us the 1980s' popular actress Rati Agnihotri's son is the guy on top. Tanuj plays Mark, a full-of-beans collegian who doesn't seem to have much to do except hang around with his friends in the campus, or barge into one of their homes to get a dekko at the girl he adores.

Blindfolded debutante Soniyo should have said, 'I Do' to Mark and spared us the long-winded, but unexciting process of what poets euphemistically describe as "discovering love".

The journey here is absolutely bereft of drama, excitement, surprise and ultimate satisfaction. One doesn't know if debutant director Joe Rajan meant the central romance to be so linear, languorous and shockproof. But that's the way it is.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, seems to suggest any hindrance in the young couple's passage to the final embrace. The Punjabi-Catholic alliance is mentioned only in passing. The hero's Goan family is filled with as many stereotypical eccentrics as the heroine's Punjabi family.

Can we ever have a film about minority communities where families behave normally?

Yes, there is the girl's fiance (Bunty Garewal), a bloke who seems as menacing a hurdle to the protagonists' love as a pebble on Milkha Singh's racetrack.

The film also takes unscheduled time off to trot down to Mexico for a love duet, and a baffling detour down dark deserted highway when Suresh Menon appears as a funny gangster who keeps mixing up Hindi words.

Ha ha.

The debutant couple makes the best of a script that offers them no room to show their skills. Tanuj has a pleasant enough screen presence. He tries his utmost to make trite and impassive situations seem fresh. His leading lady Neha Hinge has a certain unvarnished charm to her.

Choreographer Howard Rosameyer does a dead-on impersonation of Aamir Khan. One hopes he isn't typecast as an Aamir mimic. One also hopes Mr. Khan has a sense of humour.

If the truth were told, the best performance in this placid passion play comes from Rati Agnihotri.

And yes, if you can brave it to the end, there is Remo D'Souza appearing on screen to croon the title song with delectable gusto.

By then it's too late.

Sukhwinder loves glamour, but prefers talent

0
0

Sukhwinder Singh, who has lent his voice to stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Salman Khan, loves glamour, but he doesn’t want it to overshadow his talent.

The singer, who will be seen in Aaj Tak channel’s talk show“Sureeli Baat” - dedicated to musicians, thinks that glamour and talent have to go hand-in-hand. And for him, glamour goes beyond accessories and clothes.

“I love glamour but my preference will always be talent first. Glamour can’t produce talent, but it can happen vice-versa. Glamour is behaviour of a person or even a smile,” Singh told IANS.

As he gives weightage to talent, he doesn’t wish to be a part of reality shows.

“Some of the contestants are extremely talented, but I don’t like it when they dramatise it. Drama is also bad for contestants as it adds on to stress and overexertion,” he said.

Having sung in languages like Tamil, Oriya, Punjabi and many more, he feels blessed. He thinks that since god has given him music, he must follow it.

He is looking forward to his dream project Music Circus and calls it Indian Opera.

“I will be performing with Music Circus in November. It is a band of 60 to 70 people from Morocco, Russia, Mexico and Gypsy community of north India. We won’t be selective about cities. Wherever we get opportunity, we will show our talent,” said Singh.

The hitmaker of dance numbers like “Chaiyya chaiyya”, “Hud hud dabangg”, "Marjaani" and “Dard-e-disco”, has sung various songs, but his favourite is dance genre.

“There isn’t any genre that I haven’t tried, but I love to perform on dance numbers,” said Singh, who enjoys singing in a recording studio as well as on stage.

Making film on exact budget nearly impossible: Sinish Sreedharan

0
0

Filmmaker Sinish Sreedharan has donned the hat of a producer as well as director for upcoming Tamil romantic-thriller "Endrendrum" and says that his experience has taught him that no film can be made on the exact budget set aside for it.

"Thousands of films stop midway because they exceeded their budget. There could be a film of a superstar too in it. I believe it's nearly impossible to make a film on the budget originally announced for a film. Those who claim to have made their films on exact budget are lying for sure," Sinish told IANS.

"It's very unlikely that a film gets wrapped up within the budget. Mostly, the budget of a film exceeds by a small or big margin. There are so many internal as well external factors," he added.

For "Endrendrum", Sinish started with a meagre budget, but he went broke in a few weeks.

"There are so many things that delayed my project. I set out to make my film in 25-30 days with a small budget, but I used the amount in just a few weeks and I haven't even finished 50 percent of the film. It's been nearly two years and my film is yet to be released," he said.

Sinish believes it's important to find committed people to complete the film.

"My film got delayed because of the graphics work involved in it. I had outsourced the graphics work to a third party that has been undertaking such assignments for a long time. However, since mine was a low-budget film, it wasn't given due importance," he said.

"The graphics work could've been completed in a few weeks, but they spent months on it. They would only work on it when I was around, otherwise they would work on bigger films. There was no professionalism in their work," he added.

Other learning experience for Sinish was not to mix friendship with profession.

"I borrowed money from my friends for the film and I will always be indebted to them. But, when the project was being delayed, I was under a lot of pressure whether I would be able to repay them or not. This is why it's important not to mix friendship with profession," he added.

"Endrendrum", a love story based on chaos theory, features Satish and Priyanka Reddy in lead roles. It also features Tamil filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon as the narrator.

One should be jack-of-all-trades to survive in this field, he feels.

"It's very important to learn different crafts of filmmaking. You might not know when it will come in handy. After much delay, I managed to handle the graphics work of my film with some friends. One should be committed to a film, but not just to his role or designation," he said.

There's a natural censorship inside my system: Shah Rukh

A 'self aware' actor will never do a film that is not an extension of his personality, believes superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who refrains from saying or doing certain things.

"I do believe that an actor, who is self aware, will never do a film that is not an extension of his personality," Shah Rukh, who has acted in more than 75 films, including romantic, action thrillers and dramas, said.

He shared his views while in conversation with lyricist Prasoon Joshi at an event where he was honoured with Rajasthan Patrika Concerned Communicator Award.

"No matter how good I am as an actor..I can do this role also, that also, I can also prepare...lot of things I can do to change my personality and be in the role that I want to be. But as hard as I will try, I don't think it can ever go beyond my upbringing," he said.

"So, somewhere I feel that my upbringing is very simple. My parents have taught me good things, personally I shy away from talking something wrong," he said.

In his glorious career Shah Rukh has essayed negative roles in "Darr", "Baazigar" and "Anjaam", and later earned the tag of 'Badshah of Romance' by playing a perfect lover boy in romantic films like "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge", "Dil To Pagal Hai" and "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai".

He was also lauded for doing films like "Swades" and "Chak De! India".

The actor said that his personality reflects in the kinds of films he does.

"I can't say some things in the films. I feel that it will not look good when I will watch them with my kids, even alone. There is a natural censorship inside my system," the 47-year-old said.

"But having said that, I don't know if that censorship is so personal that it may happen, especially my sense of humour, that people get me wrong, it hurts some sentiments, it disturbs lot of people," added the actor, who has been involved in many controversies also.

Currently, the actor is busy promoting his forthcoming film "Chennai Express". Directed by Rohit Shetty, it features Deepika Padukone as the female lead.

Jaideep Sahni went for script recce for 'Shuddh Desi Romance'

Usually filmmakers go on a location recce, but for "Shuddh Desi Romance", writer Jaideep Sahni indulged in some script recee.

When the script of the film was in process, Sahni made sure he didn't miss any element. Since the movie's plot is set in Jaipur, he explored the city by staying at railway hotels, travelled in public transport, made friends with rickshaw pullers and even ate at a roadside dhaba to get a local feel of the Pink City and its people.

His observation of details helped him to enhance the script's flavour even as he explored popular couple spots in the city since the film has a strong connect to it. Post the script recce, he was satisfied enough to start writing it.

"Jaideep Sahni likes to soak in the ambience of a city when he is writing a script. For him, a city never represents just a location, it is about its people, the culture and so it almost becomes a character in the film," Rafiq Gangjee, vice president (Marketing and Communications), Yash Raj Films (YRF), said in a statement.

"For this, Jaideep travelled to interior parts of Rajasthan while he was writing 'Shuddh Desi Romance' to trace some reclusive people who are very difficult to find and meet otherwise," added Gangjee.

The movie, releasing Sep 13, stars Parineeti Chopra, Sushant Rajput and Vani Kapoor.

Malayalam film industry comes together for platinum jubliee

0
0

It's celebration and jubilation time in the Malayalam film industry, an integral part of the 100-year-old Indian film industry, which is gearing up for the platinum jubilee of its talkies later this year. Stalwarts like Mohanlal and Adoor Gopalakrishan are especially proud of the occasion.

Director S. Nottani's "Balan" was the first Malayalam talkie that came out in 1938. The industry with a glorious past is credited with India's first 3D film "My Dear Kuttichathan" (1984).

Superstar Mohanlal pointed out that the film fraternity should be proud of what they have been able to achieve, adding: "We should see that we celebrate as we are into our platinum jubilee."

Lauding the decision, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the need of the hour is for the fraternity to stand united.

"Cinema is the entertainment option for the common man and for that we are committed to doing anything. But today, there are issues that plague the industry on account of differences of opinion prevailing amongst you. Please settle that," said Chandy.

One of the largest film producing nations in the world, India churns out about 1,000 films a year. Ace producer G. Suresh Kumar points out that Malayalam films have more than 10 percent share in the total output.

Taking pride at being a part of the industry, Suresh Kumar said: "Priyadarshan, Mohanlal and I first entered the industry 35 years ago and we are extremely delighted about it."

"The biggest change that has taken place is that the industry has entered the digital era. Our industry has seized all the opportunities to move ahead," added the producer of "Rathinirvedam".

Satisfied with the growth of the filmdom, multiple National Award winner Gopalakrishnan, known for films like "Swayamvaram" and "Naalu Pennungal" said: "We should certainly celebrate our platinum jubilee because through our films, we have showcased our heritage and culture to the world and this has been accepted by all."

Well-known director Shaji N. Karun hailed the industry for contributing to the betterment of art and culture.

On the other hand, thespian actor Madhu said that even though Malayalam films began in Madras (now Chennai), the industry has now got a strong foothold here. He felt that a tribute should be paid to all those who made it possible.

"I wish to take this opportunity to see that we remind many of our fellow brethren who made this all possible, but they are now not with us. When we celebrate, we should certainly remember them and their contributions for laying the foundations of our industry," Madhu added.

Yesteryears actress Suhasini shared her brief interaction with legendary Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray, who told her: "It's only people from Kerala who make sensible films."

With grandeur comes rigour. If the industry celebrated success and growth, it also has to deal with tiffs among various bodies of lightboys, actors, exhibitors, producers, and distributors.

But burying the hatchet for the time being, the the film industry is working together to make the occasion memorable.
