Thankful to Madhur for believing in me: 'Calendar Girls' actor

Model Vikram Sakhalkar, who plays a business tycoon in Madhur Bhandarkar's upcoming film "Calendar Girls", says that he is grateful to the director for giving him an opportunity to prove himself.

"I'm thankful to Madhur Bhandarkar for believing in me and giving me an opportunity to prove myself," Vikram told IANS here.

Vikram, who has done several commercials and print campaigns for many leading brands, always wanted to be an actor.

"I play a business tycoon in the movie. I took a leap of faith when I first walked on to the sets of the movie. As an outsider I had no clue of how films are made. Madhur made me feel very comfortable and in a short span of time I learnt a lot from him. He is brilliant when he is directing and gives a lot of freedom to his actors to perform," Vikram said.

"The energy and aura he creates on set is so positive. I had a great time. I am thankful that I got an opportunity to work with such an experienced director for my first film," he added.

Born in Mumbai, Vikram studied at Arya Vidya Mandir in Juhu and moved to the US.

Asked how he got into modelling, Vikram replied: "I came back and was trying to figure out what I was going to do, and then one of my friends asked me if I would model for his brand. That's when I decided to get into this field as it was always at the back of my mind that I wanted to one day be an actor."

"It took me seven years until I cracked a movie role," he added.

Although during this interval he groomed himself and did an acting course from Barry John acting Studio, he admits it's hard to live alone in Mumbai.

"Calendar Girls" traces the story of five models who rise to fame after featuring in a calendar but then fate plays a terrible game with them. Produced by Madhur Bhandarkar and Sangeeta Ahir, the film features newcomers Akanksha Puri, Avani Modi, Kyra Dutt and Ruhi Singh, among others.

It is slated to release on September 25.

Actor Dhanush is on a roll. With three releases already in his kitty so far this year, his upcoming Tamil outing, which is tentatively titled "VIP 2", will hit the screens on Diwali.

"If all goes as planned, 'VIP 2' will release during Diwali. There's a lot of shuffling of release dates of star-studded films, so a lot depends on the release of these films that are slated to hit the screens before 'VIP 2'," a source from the film's unit told IANS.

Being directed by Velraj, who helmed "VIP", the film also stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson in lead roles.

Produced by Dhanush's Wunderbar Films, it has music by Anirudh Ravichander.

Dhanush is currently shooting for filmmaker Prabhu Solomon's yet-untitled Tamil action-drama in which he plays a pantry worker.

Next year, he will be seen playing a gangster in Vetrimaaran's two-part film "Vada Chennai". He also has a yet-untitled political thriller with director R.S. Durai Senthil Kumar.

In Bollywood, Dhanush is expected to team up with "Ranjhanaa" director Anand L. Rai again.

We do not produce the revenues that films deserve: Big B

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan says though the Hindi film industry churns out the “largest number of films”, there is one thing that it lacks -- minting “revenues that they deserve” -- something that gives an edge to Hollywood.

“The film world of our nation produces the largest number of films in the world and of this we are proud…but we do not produce the revenues that they deserve...efforts and fresh thoughts are being developed each moment on this and many a generous soul show concern and anguish over this.

"... the fact is that we never knew and still do not the methodology of exploitation and marketing our products... the west does know and we do not,” Big B posted on his blog.

The 72-year-old, who stepped into the world of Hollywood with his cameo appearance in “The Great Gatsby”, went on to share that “within the last few days of meetings and consultations, there seems to be evolving various ideas on this could be reversed”.

Amitabh, who has been a part of Hindi filmdom for over four decades, feels the new way of storytelling in Bollywood is one thing everyone should watch out for.

“Some marvellous ideas, exciting stories, out of the box contemplations, are all what the young makers are thinking...and they come with such beautiful ideas, it is difficult to resist them...one wishes one had time on our side so we could be involved in all of them,” posted the actor, who was last seen on the big screen in "Piku".

Amitabh notes that stardom comes with its drawbacks and says that a “celebrity is an insecure vulnerable and utterly isolated individual”.

“They (celebrity) shall agree because of repercussions or pressures that may upset the flow of one career one opportunity... and so they do... But the need to attend such is also challenged by them that need to be recognised, need for their mission to be acknowledged, to be seen in media, to be talked about,” he said.

Javed Akhtar happy with emergence of singles instead of albums

0

Veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar is pleased with the current trend of releasing singles which, he feels, helps people who are looking for one particular song and don't want to be served with other songs along with it.

"Albums are getting launched but a positive development is that singles are also being launched. This trend wasn't prominent here but regularly took place abroad. The problem was that for one particular song, you have to buy other songs as well which were unwanted. But now you have the option to buy only the song that you wish to buy, which is a good thing," he told media persons at launch of singer Richa Sharma's single "Ranglee' on Wednesday to a query about the trend of singles.

The album culture which was popular during the 1990s saw numerous singers like Sonu Nigam and bands like Euphoria regularly launching albums. But after the turn of the century, the album culture declined. But emergence of digital access to content through apps, smartphones and video streaming has again brought focus to non-Bollywood music.

Rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh is one who frequently launches singles and albums which do well digitally like the recent "Dheere Dheere" featuring Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor.

Akhtar said: "The means of communication are evolving and technology plays a crucial role behind that. But the content, real factors or the soul of the work has to be effective irrespective of whether you download, stream it or if you purchased the CD. However the content, it will reach the audiences."

He also said that he is thoroughly enjoying writing the lyrics of wife Shabana Azmi's education-based film "Chalk N Duster".

Singer Armaan Malik has sung a reprise version of "Khwaahishein" song from Madhur Bhandarkar's forthcoming film "Calendar Girls".

"Khwaahishein" is "a heart-wrenching song that speaks about what struggles and obstacles one has to tackle on the road to their dreams", the singer described the song.

"My approach to this song was to keep the essence of the melody and the lyrics as intimate as possible, so that the listeners get attached immediately.

"A song like this has to be bare and sombre in its approach, and that is exactly what has translated on the final track," Armaan said in a statement.

Director Nikhil Advani chose to shoot with the cast of "Katti Batti" for the film's climax in a different manner. He did not give the script of the last 25 minutes of the film!

Talking about his decision, Advani said: "I needed to capture real and natural reactions of the cast in this particular portion. I figured the best way of doing this would be not giving any script or dialogue and not to prepare the actors for this scene. This was only done to bring out the originality of the scene."

A source said that after learning this, the cast was at first taken aback, but they went ahead with Advani’s advice.

The idea is said to have turned out to be fruitful as Advani got the desired result.

"Katti Batti", releasing on September 18, stars Imran Khan and Kangana Ranaut in a story about live-in relationships.

Tone matters more than words: Kangana's love advice

0

National Award winning actress Kangana Ranaut, who has been busy promoting her forthcoming romantic entertainer "Katti Batti", says in love a man should be "poetic" in his approach as sometimes a person's tone overpowers words.

Kangana was at a college here on Sunday with her co-star Imran Khan. They discussed with students some tips on boys, girls, attitude, friendship and love.

The girls of the college raised some cards with messages, and asked Imran to interpret them.

One card read, "We are just friends". And Imran asked Kangana to interpret it.

She said: "'We are just friends means that though I am having a second thought about you, but keep trying'."

Then she spoke the words in different tones, explaining how the meaning of the words can change.

"Tone matters more than words," she stressed.

Kangana also shared advice on relationships: "When you are romancing a woman in a relationship, it should be poetic. It should have layers. All beautiful things in this world are because of women."

Talking about "Katti Batti", Kangana said: "The film is a very genuine and a beautiful love story. It talks about the depth of the relationships. Youngsters want very deep love stories."

Directed by Nikhil Advani, the film is releasing on September 18.

Lavish budget for 'Hero' like my other films, says Salman

0
0

Actor Salman Khan claims that he didn't compromise on the budget for his production "Hero" just because it features newcomers and allotted it a sum on par with his other big-budget films.

"The biggest challenge for me in this movie was not to care about the budget. Caring about the budget even a bit, could make this film into a disastrous film. So the kind of budgets that I work on, we've done the same budget for Athiya and Sooraj because their journey starts from this film onwards, so we didn't want to leave any stone unturned," he told media at the music launch of the Sooraj Pancholi-Athiya Shetty starrer.

"So we paid attention to everything from the music to selection of the director to Nikhil spending days and nights with these two, and they going through their training in dancing, action and other such things. I was working on 'Bajrangi..' but my concentration was more on this than 'Bajrangi..' because I've seen my life journey but their careers start now, it shouldn't be that fingers should point at me, that I've put them into trouble."

Director Nikhil Advani had claimed at a previous event that Salman wanted his film to be shot on a big scale, on the lines to their previous collaboration, "Salaam-E-Ishq".

The film is releasing on September 11 and Salman admits that releasing the music just a week prior to the release wasn't a great idea. "Obviously the music has picked up and become a big hit, but I think we erred as we should've released the music at least four months before. As producers, we've messed up on that. I think we need slightly more time for music, especially in a love story. For all the 5-6 songs to become hits we need sufficient time. It's important to promote it in this short time because their whole life depends on the music of the film."

"Hero" is the second film under the banner of Salman Khan Films after the blockbuster "Bajrangi Bhaijaan".
