Audience don't look for foreign stamps, says Richa Chadha

0
0

Actress Richa Chadha, who is being applauded for her strong role in internationally-acclaimed film “Masaan”, says 'foreign stamp' on a film is not needed to gain respect from Indian audience.

“I don't think Indian audience give respect to a film or an actor on the basis of any foreign stamp. They respect the artist individually,” Richa told reporters here.

In “Masaan", which won two prestigious awards at the Cannes International Film Festival this year, Richa plays the role of a daughter ridden with guilt of a sexual encounter ending in a tragedy and how she overcomes all hurdles and changes her fate.

The actress, who walked the ramp of ongoing 2015 edition of Amazon India Couture Week (AICW) here for designer Reynu Taandon on Saturday, says she credits Anurag Kashyap's “Gangs of Wasseypur” for getting her into spotlight.

“I did 'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!' in 2008, but my role was not pivotal in the film. After that I didn't look for work in the film industry for sometime. For me, my first step into showbiz was with 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. Since then, I'm getting good work,” she added.

Meanwhile, the actress is all geared up for "Cabaret", which also stars former cricketer S. Sreesanth.

The story of debut directorial of Neeraj Ghaywan revolves around four lives which intersect along the Ganga ghats in Varanasi: a low-caste boy falling hopelessly in love, a daughter ridden with guilt of a sexual encounter ending in a tragedy, a hapless father with fading morality, and a spirited child yearning for a family, long to escape the moral constructs of a small town.

"I didn't have high hopes about Hindi movies as most of them were musical melodrama. But 'Masaan' made me speechless. I salute Neeraj Ghaywan," Nasreen tweeted on Saturday.

The "overwhelmed" director replied saying: "Overwhelmed! Thank you so much!"

The film, which stars Richa Chadha, Sanjay Mishra, Shweta Tripathi and Vicky Kaushal, won two awards at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival. It bagged the Promising Future Prize and the International Federation of Film Critics (Fipresci) Award at the prestigious fest.

Porn banned in India? RGV criticises the move

Taking a dig at the inaccessibility of porn sites over various internet service providers in the country, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma said “depriving consenting adults” of watching porn is equivalent to what “Taliban and ISIS is doing to freedom”.

As per reports, most internet service providers -- including Vodafone, MTNL and BSNL -- are showing blank pages instead of porn sites. The matter came to the limelight late on Saturday, when a number of internet users across the country could not access pornographic websites.

Varma took to Twitter on Sunday to criticise the move.

In a series of tweets, the “Sarkar” director wrote: “Considering the sheer popularity of porn whichever government owns up to banning it, is sure to be wiped out of existence in next election. Government should work on finding ways to steer the content not to go in wrong directions rather than to block it.

“To deprive consenting adults of the harmless fun they are having of watching porn is equivalent of what Taliban and Isis is doing to freedom.

“To ban porn saying it will be seen by who shouldn't see it is like saying to stop traffic because there will be accidents,” Varma added.

The hashtag #PornBan became a top Twitter trend on Sunday morning.

Writer-filmmaker Milap Zaveri tweeted: “Huh Porn is banned??? Hmmm not the sites I know about!”

Musician Vishal Dadlani wrote: “I wouldn't be surprised. Ironically, banned by the same party whose MPs were caught watching porn in parliament.”

Actor-producer Uday Chopra also took to Twitter to share his opinion. “So India bans porn. Will this decision lower the cases of sexual violence or increase it. I wonder," he posted.

Director resorts to crowdfunding for Nandita Das-starrer

Director Soumitra RanadeÂ’s "Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai?", starring Nandita Das, Manav Kaul and Saurabh Shukla, will be raising Rs.30 lakh through a crowdfunding campaign on funding platform Wishberry.

The two-month long crowdfunding campaign for the remake of the cult film started on Monday. The money collected from the campaign will be utilized to complete the post-production, animation and VFX of the film.

"Most producers want to have creative control over the films that they produce. It is precisely to avoid this situation that I decided to produce the film myself, as this kind of a film would work only with a singular vision.

"Crowdfunding is a very liberating way of financing your films. People who like your film get attached to it on a personal level and support the film without any conditions. That allows the filmmakers to make the film as per their own vision," Ranade said in a statement.

The film is a joint production between Soumitra Ranade Productions, Templetree Motion Pictures, No Guts No Glory Films, Parashuram Productions and Paperboat Studios Pvt. Ltd.

Though the film is a remake of the 1980 cult classic by the same name, Ranade's take will not be an exact replica of the original. This one will throw light on the modern-day crisis that our society is grappling with today.

Shourya Bajpai, creative head, Wishberry, said: “Wishberry provides rigorous consulting on the presentation and marketing of a campaign to make sure it reaches maximum audience, thus maintaining its 70 percent success rate."

Ban on porn anti-freedom, impractical: Chetan Bhagat

Author Chetan Bhagat on Monday criticised the government's decision to make porn sites inaccessible in India, and called it an "anti-freedom and impractical" move.

"Porn ban is anti-freedom, impractical, not enforceable. Politically not very smart too. Avoidable. Let's not manage people's private lives," Bhagat said on the micro-blogging site Twitter.

As per reports, most internet service providers -- including Vodafone, MTNL and BSNL -- are showing blank pages instead of porn sites. The matter came to the limelight late on Saturday, when a number of internet users across the country could not access pornographic websites.

Bhagat further said that instead of banning porn, the government should "ban men ogling", "molesting", and "raping women".

"Don't ban porn. Ban men ogling, leering, brushing past, groping, molesting, abusing, humiliating and raping women. Ban non-consent. Not sex," he wrote on Twitter.

Filmmaker Onir too shared a post on his Twitter page against this ban.

"Would #Kamasutra books be banned for propagating #Unnaturalsex ? #pornban", he wrote.

Earlier on Sunday, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma loathed the move and said "depriving consenting adults" of watching porn is equivalent to what "Taliban and ISIS is doing to freedom".

The hashtag #PornBan became a top Twitter trend on Sunday morning. Now, #NextBanIdea is trending on the social media site, with many users posting sarcastic tweets as to what the government should ban next.

"Dear politicians, why the idea of banning corruption never crosses your mind," wrote a Twitter user, while another Twitter user said: "#NextBanIdea Elections! Democracy already seems dead."

World renowned for his impeccable voice and versatile acting, Kishore Kumar, fondly known as Kishore-da, gave the Indian film industry several timeless songs and films. On his 86th birth anniversary on Tuesday, he was fondly remembered by his son Amit Kumar, who, with his music label Kumar Brothers Music (KBM) is trying to keep Kishore-da's musical legacy alive.

"With my label, I want to promote good music. Talented music directors who want to compose great music will be welcomed. I will keep on trying to work so that the legacy that my father left behind, should go ahead," Amit said.

Amit's latest album "Baba Mere" released on Tuesday to commemorate his father's 86th birth anniversary. The album will be streamed by music streaming service Saavn.

The album has six songs. A music video of the title track, which pays a humble and heartwarming tribute to Kishore-da, will release on Wednesday. It also features Amit's 10-year-old daughter Muktika, says Amit.

"We made a music video for 'Baba mere', which is a dream sequence. It took two years to finish this song. Muktika goes into the dream where she meets her grandfather Kishore Kumar. I have played Kishore-da in the video.

"In the end, the dream gets over and she gets over. I try to console her that she sees her grandfather, there is a photograph of my father and Kishore da comes out of it and blesses her," Amit said.

However, Amit is not interested in doing tribute albums to Kishore-da, as he feels that it has been done and dusted countless times, and there is no musician who can "surpass" the singer's prowess.

"There is one track in the album ('Baba mere') which is a tribute to Kishore-da. I don't want to do tributes which everybody has done. Nobody can surpass him ever," he added.

Amit also mentioned he is working on a book on his father, as people are very interested in knowing his life's story.

"I was at a show, where people wanted to know so many things about him. They are more interested in knowing the story about him. Then I thought that I should write a book on my father. My father as I knew. That book will have all his colourful sides," he added.

Kishore-da immortalised his musical legacy with classic songs like "Chalte chalte mere ye geet yaad rakhna", "O hansini", "Aa chal ke tujhe", "Pal pal dil ke paas", "Hawa ke saath saath", "Chukar mere mann ko" and "Jahaan teri ye nazar hai".

As an actor, he was seen in films like "Padosan", "Half Ticket" and "Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi". He was renowned for his unmatchable comic timing and effortless dialogue delivery.

He died in 1987.

AIB, Pretentious Movie Review to mentor upcoming comedians

0
0

“The Comedy Hunt on YouTube", a web hunt to find the next comedy stars on YouTube in India, has boiled down to the country’s 40 top creators who will now compete for the final winning slot.

Leading stand-up comedy group All India Bakchod (AIB) and popular YouTube channel Pretentious Movie Reviews, including other comics will mentor the shortlisted candidates as part of the initiative, launched by Only Much Louder (OML).

“Comedy is tough to do and we were thrilled at the number of entries that came in from all over the country. For 1,500 people to take the time out to create an audition video and send it in is a huge deal. Now working with these diverse creators and creating more random videos is going to be a ton of fun," AIB's Rohan Joshi said.

Presented by Quikr and powered by Micromax, and co-sponsored by 5 Star, Garnier Men and Royal Challenge Sports Drink, the three-month-long hunt will now move to the next phase of challenges for these 40 shortlisted finalists.

Every week, for seven weeks, these "Super 40" will be given a challenge to make a video on a particular topic or in a particular style.

Leading comedy creators such as AIB, Kanan Gill and Biswa Kalyan Rath, SnG Comedy, East India Comedy, Jose Covaco, Abish Mathew, Aditi Mittal and Shudh Desi Endings will mentor these top 40 shortlisted participants and work with them to help sharpen their skills as they are put through seven weeks of challenge rounds.

The hunt saw participation from all over India - with 1578 entries from over 60 cities across India. The three-week call for entries saw participation from standalone creators to large groups participating in the hunt.

The entries were not limited to just metros like Mumbai, Delhi but also came from tier-II cities like Bhilai, Kanpur, Silvassa, Hoshiarpur, Haridwar and many more small cities.

Entries ranged from creators showcasing really random dance moves, to enacting funny dialogues of popular movies, to vox pop, skits, spoofs and sketches.

Speaking about the response, Ajay Nair, director of OML, said: “We’re really overwhelmed by the participation we saw in the hunt from all across India. It’s incredible to see the diversity of creators in India and how their definition of comedy differs from what we know of mainstream comedy content."

"That is the beauty of a platform like YouTube, where everyone can participate and showcase their talent and have a chance to succeed. Our mentors have their job cut out to make these top 40 creators shine and make India laugh with their heroics as we move into the challenge rounds," he added.

At the end of the weekly challenges, the five top contestants will be flown to Mumbai for the grand finale, where they will get a chance to share the stage with their mentors like AIB, Kanan and Biswa, SnG and East India Company. At the end of the finale, the winner of The Comedy Hint will be chosen.

The finale will be held on September 30, 2015 in Mumbai.
