Dia Mirza does her bit to 'Save Our Tigers'

Former beauty queen and actress Dia Mirza, who has voiced her concern about the environment on several occasions, has involved herself closely with the 'Save Our Tigers' campaign, backed by NDTV and Aircel.

On World Tiger Day, which was on Monday, Dia was here to celebrate the increase in the tiger population in the country. She says she was persistent in asking Bittu Sahgal, founding editor of environmental news magazine Sanctuary Asia, to give her a bigger role in saving tigers.

"It was a few years ago when Aircel launched the campaign 'Save our Tigers' on NDTV that I became familiar with the work of people like Bittu Sahgal. What was a childhood passion, kind of resurfaced and I plagued Bittu Sahgal to give me a bigger role and make me more involved with the work that needs to be done," Dia told IANS while talking about her involvement with the campaign.

"Now I do school visits and forest visits with 'Kids For Tigers’...there is a lot of work happening now in creating communication tools to spread this message further -- to take it not just to school children, but also to industries, corporates, media and help people understand that it's not just about saving the tiger, but tiger is a metaphor for saving all life,” she added.

The event here saw a panel discussion hosted by Vikram Chandra, Group CEO of NDTV channel, and Swati Thiyagarajan, environment editor, NDTV.

Apart from Dia, the panelists included Bittu Sahgal, Anish Andheria, president, Wildlife Conservation Trust, Vivek Menon, CEO, Wildlife Trust of India, Bishan Singh Bonal, member secretary, National Tiger Conservation Authority and Y.V. Jhala and Qamar Qureshi from the Wildlife Institute of India.

“India is home to 70 percent of the world’s tigers today. We have had a 30 percent increase in the number of tigers in the last five years. The dismal numbers 1,411 in the first updated census became the rallying cry of the first NDTV-Aircel ‘Save Our Tigers’ campaign in 2010. Now it is 2226 in our fourth campaign,” said Chandra.

The event also saw the felicitation of eight people to acknowledge their contribution in saving tigers from poaching in wildlife reserves of Arunachal Pradesh, Kashmir and Orissa.

Adding a musical touch to the event was singer Kailash Kher, who crooned tracks like “Teri deewani”, “Tauba tauba” and a track from his latest album “Rangeele” along with his band Kailasa.

Dance shows on TV changed Bollywood's dancing style: Remo D'Souza

0
0

Choreographer-director Remo D'Souza, who is currently judging TV show “Dance +”, says dance-based reality TV shows have over the years had their effect on Bollywood, resulting in the influx of new forms in the dancing style of the film industry.

D'Souza, who started his TV journey with the first season of “Dance India Dance” as a mentor in 2009, said that since then, the dancing scenario in the country has changed a lot and people have become more educated about different dance forms.

“After we started that reality show which I was a part of long back, the whole scenario of dancing has changed in India. Everyone was educated about dancing and they came to know about all the dance forms in India. Because of that, the film industry has also changed, its dancing has changed.

“Initially we had only few western styles like break dance and hip-hop, but now we have actors doing krumping, contemporary and everything in film songs. So it is a big change that I've seen after the dance reality shows,” D'Souza told IANS in an interview here at the “Dance +” set.

The 43-year-old, who has been a part of several shows like “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa” and “Nach Baliye” and has directed the Bollywood dance film franchise "ABCD", feels dance shows are now a “big thing” and people have started accepting dancing as a career.

“When we started the first season of 'Dance India Dance', the dancers who came, were not sure about dance reality shows. So this show was a change, and after the first season, people came to know that even dancing can be a career.

“Now there are people who train themselves to come to reality shows -- they train for years -- and they want to be a part of them because it is a big thing right now. Dancing can change your life and it has changed so many lives in all these years... it changed my life also,” he said.

Talking about “Dance +”, which is currently airing on Star Plus, D'Souza said he is surprised to see how much unexplored talent there is in the country.

“I am very excited because even after doing so many shows and making films on dance, I still got surprised in the first episode we shot. It was amazing to see it all and I was shocked to know that we still have so much talent and I've still not seen it all. It's like a different kind of talent I'm seeing this time,” he said.

The show features solo, duet and group performers and provides a platform to dancing talent from all over the country.

“Sometimes we miss on these unique dancers because we look out for something else. So in this show, we're concentrating on only those unique dancers -- not only solos, but duets and groups also. When one looks for solo dancers, the duets and the groups are left behind, but in this show, we're targeting all kinds of dancers,” D'Souza said.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali very detail-oriented: Designer Anju Modi

After adding drama to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's “Goliyon Ki Rasleela - Ram Leela” with her costumes, designer Anju Modi is working with him on his "Bajirao Mastani" dream project. She says the filmmaker has absolute clarity on how he wants the characters to be developed, portrayed and perceived.

Modi, who styled Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra in the 2013 released film, is again styling for both the ladies for “Bajirao Mastani”, and the designer has immersed herself into research along with Bhansali to nail the right look of the characters.

“For the research, since the movie focusses on a specific period in our history when the Maratha Peshwa (Bajirao) rose to prominence and the region of Maharashtra, we had our work cut out for us.

“Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a very detail-oriented person - he is methodical and has absolute clarity on the way he wants the characters to be developed, portrayed and perceived. Bhansali and I travelled to various parts of Maharashtra to research the costumes and how we can best highlight and detail out the nuances of each of the three protagonists’ characters and personalities,” she said.

Working with actresses Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra is also a delight for Modi.

Amazed by the professionalism they have at this young age, Modi told IANS: “In '...Ram-Leela', I got the opportunity to work with two of the top leading ladies - Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra (for her song in the movie), and got to design costumes for both these beautiful actresses and Ranveer Singh.

“It has been an absolute delight working with all three of them! They’re all highly professional at such a young age, and to see their passion and dedication towards their craft, is nice to see."

Modi, who launched her label in 1990, is one of the founding members of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), the industry's apex body.

In 2006, Modi was one of only four Indian designers selected for Heyers Fashion Festival in Paris, organised by the Chambre Syndicale, also the organisers of the Paris Fashion Week. In the same year, she was also invited to present her collection at the Miami Fashion Week.

Behind the scenes, Modi has been tirelessly working with master artisans across the country. She has delicately revived age-old Indian techniques, including vegetable dyeing, block printing and embroidery. She has also been working on contemporising traditional crafts like Chanderi weaving, Kota fabrics, Varanasi zari work and Bandhani printing.

When she is working on period movies, which require use of traditional Indian textile, Modi finds it "intellectually stimulating and gratifying" to research and work on such projects that "celebrate and showcase our rich history and textile heritage".

“In fact, my collections (outside of costume design) are always steeped in research. I suppose it is my area of comfort,” said the designer, whose couture line at the ongoing edition of Amazon India Fashion Week (AICW) 2015 draws its inspiration from one of the richest ancient civilisations Persia.

She has titled the line Kashish.

Talking of her own journey in the fashion industry, she said: “It makes you feel extremely happy and blessed to have created such a body of work; and when I reflect back on the journey - from my beginnings to where I am today - brings this feeling of satisfaction and serenity, which incidentally also reflects in my collection inspirations now

After a prolonged legal tussle, "Ek Albela", a Marathi film which will unfold the life of late actor-director Bhagwan Dada on the silver screen, will go on the floors on August 5.

The film will be a tribute to the cinema legend for his contribution to the film industry. Being produced by Kimaya Motion Pictures, the film will be directed by Shekhar Sartandel, read a statement.

The film hit a legal roadblock when Kimaya Motion Pictures filed a case against director Niranjan Patwardhan, who was to helm the film first, for cheating, fraud, breach of contract and theft last year.

The production house alleged that Patwardhan cheated them by taking illegal possession of the film's screenplay with dialogues, research material and important hard disks from the producer's office.

The character of Bhagwan Dada, whose real name was Bhagwan Abaji Palav, will be played by award-winning Marathi actor Mangesh Desai and Bollywood make-up artist Vidyadhar Bhatte will help bring the look of the actor with his art.

Bhagwan made a special place for himself in showbiz by showcasing his acting prowess in over 300 films.

He is credited with having made India's first horror film titled “Bhedi Bangla”. And he introduced fist fighting in Indian films through his film “Badla”. But Bhagwan shot to fame with “Albela”, which released in 1951, according to the statement.

"Ek Albela" will explore the era between 1930 to 1951 in Mumbai. Though it is presented as a Marathi film, the film has many dialogues in Hindi and two Hindi songs from the original film.

The biopic will also give a sneak-peak into the Hindi film industry of those days with a realistic approach.

Only weak actors scared of being typecast: Gulshan Grover

0

Typecast as a villain, actor Gulshan Grover earned the name "Bad Man" for numerous villainous roles in the 1980s and 1990s but was never worried about being slotted as he was courageous, unlike other "weak actors".

"People are frightened to be typecast. I, in fact created the typecast. It is the weaker actors who are scared of being typecast. If you're a good actor, strong and hardworking while also being gutsy and courageous, then nothing can stop you when the time is right. And I've proven it," Gulshan told media at the music launch of his upcoming film "Chehre" which also stars Jackie Shroff, Manisha Koirala, Divya Dutta, Aarya Babbar among others. The film is directed by Rohit Kaushik.

"Bad Man" tag was a conscious effort for Gulshan. "I came to act in movies after having done my formal training along with Anil Kapoor, Mazhar Khan and others. I deciphered and analyzed the film business, and how can you be a big brand. And I understood that you must have a recall value, and a recognition value.

"So I created this 'Bad Man', 'villain' persona myself and I worked very hard for it. And I knew when the time is right, I will be able to break it with no difficulty at all because I'm hardworking, talented and I'm gutsy and courageous."

Proving his case, Gulshan has successfully changed tracks playing positive roles in films such as "I Am Kalam" which were widely appreciated.

Mother didn't allow me to watch commercial Hindi, Bengali films: Konkona

0
0

Critically acclaimed actress Konkona Sen Sharma says her "middle-of-the-road" sensibilities on movies come from the fact that as a child, she was not allowed to watch commercial entertainers either in Hindi or her Bengali.

The daughter of celebrated filmmaker Aparna Sen, Konkona told IANS: "I did not really grow up watching commercial Hindi films or Bengali films. My mother did not allow me to watch it. So, I have always watched different kind of films and my sensibilities lie with, I think, more middle-of-the-road sensible kind of cinema anyway.

"So that I think reflects in my films as well."

Konkana, who has impressed cinema-goers with her low-on-glamour and high-on-performance roles in movies like "15 Park Avenue", "Mr. and Mrs. Iyer", "Omkara", "Page 3" and "Wake Up Sid", will next be seen in "Gour Hari Dastaan - The Freedom File".

A biopic on freedom fighter Gour Hari Das, the movie will see Konkona portraying the role of Lakshmi Das, the wife of Gour Hari Das.

"It was quite a challenge," she said, and added: "Lakshmi Das is double my age, she has been a loyal supporting wife, especially when people were not believing Das-ji, ridiculed him thinking that he was a fraud...the building society people, the government of course was not supportive of him...she has always been a loyal supporter."

Getting into the character was not so difficult for Konkana because "the script was very well written" and since the team had met the real life people on whom the film is based.

"We interacted with them, they even came to the sets, so one got a feel of the characters. It was like the script was coming alive...it was also very well-researched."

Also, shooting with a cast of National Film Award winners was "great" for her.

"It is a great cast, so shooting was fun. Vinay (Pathak), Ranvir (Shorey), Saurabh Shukla, Tannishtha (Chatterjee)...one knew the people since we have worked together before and known each other socially otherwise, so it was fun."

"Gour Hari Dastaan - The Freedom File" was screened at London Indian Film festival, New York Indian Film Festival, Venice Film Festival and has already won an award at Extravagant India Film Festival in Paris.

How important and effective is the 'international return stamp' for a film's publicity?

"To a certain extent, the international return stamp does work. After all, these films are niche films... after all neither do they have the budget to do the marketing in such way that it reaches everybody, and have very little publicity.

"Many people don't know about it, they don't have that many shows, so film festivals do help in terms of publicity. That way, people across the world get to watch such films. It is great for such films which don't have much funds to begin with," Konkona said.

Why did Anant Mahadevan make film on Gour Hari Das?

0
0

Director Anant Mahadevan says he chose to make "Gour Hari Dastaan: The Freedom File" as it is an inspiration tale about a real life man who first fought for the country and then had to fight against the same country.

Gour Hari Das reportedly had to fight for three decades to get a certificate recognising his work as a freedom fighter.

Talking about the reason why he decided to make the film on the man, Mahadevan said: "There are very few incidences when we meet a person who is alive, who is a very big personality and at the same time, a very simple and honest man in actual life.

"His fight was first for the country and then he fought against the same country for freedom. This is a very strange situation and this type of a biopic has never come on screen from which we get to learn so much. Hence, I made a film on this freedom fighter Gour Hari Das."

Gour Hari Das is a freedom fighter who fought with courage for our country and had to struggle for more than 30 years to prove his identity as a freedom fighter. Vinay Pathak portrays him in the film.

The film's music was launched here on Friday in the presence of its cast and crew sans Vinay Pathak. Gour Hari Das himself was present at the music launch, and said: "I have some cuttings, clippings and photographs of the film. When I go through them, I cannot differentiate between myself and Vinay Pathak. He is so good and worth admiration."

The film will hit the screen on August 14, where this real life story has to fight against Karan Johar's "Brothers", which is also releasing on the same day.

Chinese cinemas' box office hit a record high of 5.49 billion yuan ($897.5 million) in July, said data from the country's entertainment authority.

A total of 159 million people went to cinema last month and box office revenue this year has totalled 25.85 billion yuan, reported Xinhua.

The new monthly record owes much to the success of Chinese films, which raked in more than 5.2 billion yuan, about 95.6 percent of the overall figure.

The three biggest earners -- live-action animation "Monster Hunt", animated feature "Monkey King: Hero is Back", and comedy "Jian Bing Man" -- took up more than 60 percent of the ticket sales.

According to a US box office count, "Monster Hunt" has also outperformed Hollywood productions "Minions" and "Ant-Man" in total box office gains.

It is estimated that the film earnings in China last month exceeded the yearly numbers from 2002 to 2005 combined.

Top singers Udit Narayan, Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali, and Mahalaxmi Iyer among others are all set to soothe moods of music lovers with a new album "Moonlight Whispers".

"Some of the top singers such as Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali, Mahalaxmi Iyer have all sung for this album. I have a duet with Mahalaxmi and other than that, I have two solo songs. The songs are extremely melodious and I hope the audiences love it," Narayan told media here.

About his experience of working with such renowned names in the music industry, he said: "I'm very happy that I got the opportunity to sing with such top singers. The title is also good, our writer Sharmaji (Ravi Sharma) has beautifully written the words and Vivek Prakashji (music director) too has created a beautiful melody for all the songs. And I'm hopeful that this album, 'Moonlight Whispers', just like its name will be a hit."

Narayan, who ruled the playback singing space in the 1990s, still has the urge and drive to continue exploring music. "For several years, there was a kind of dominance (in music industry), which has reduced now but still there is an excitement and joy about music. But I want to learn more and work harder. There is no end to music as how much ever you go deep into music, it is still insufficient."

He also said that he was extremely happy with his response to songs in recent films such as "Entertainment", "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania" and "Agneepath".

"Moonlight Whispers" will be released by Times Music.

Political background has made me wiser: Riteish Deshmukh

Actor Riteish Deshmukh, son of late former Maharashtra chief minister and union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, feels that being born in a political family has made him wiser.

"I hope that being born in a political family has made me wiser, because you are very careful about the words that you speak. Since childhood I have realized and known what one speaks and how things are put forward in front of media. And always being an architect has taught me 'Less is More'. So I try and choose wisely what I say.

"Belonging to a political background with some party, my viewpoint apart from being an individual are inclined towards where my father or my brother belong. So my opinions for it, against it or with it, I try to keep it to myself. As I know being from films my comments will be taken a bit ahead and reacted more than usual," Riteish said to a query on how his political background has affected him as a person, as a celebrity and also in choice of his films.

"About choices of films, it has nothing to do with political backdrop or else I would have never done 'Grand Masti'. I think the films I choose to do, may be it will sound politically incorrect, are the ones which I enjoy to do and I am glad that people enjoy watching them too," he said at a promotional event for his forthcoming film "Bangistan", whose release date has been pushed from July 31 to August 7 due to the strong pull of "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" and "Baahubali"

His co-star Pulkit and director Karan Anshuman were also present.

The debut of critic-turned-director Karan Anshuman, "Bangistan" is a satire on terrorism.
