Southern actress Saranya Mohan, who secretly got engaged to Trivandrum-based doctor Aravind Krishnan last week, will enter into wedlock on September 6.

Saranya announced her engagement on her Facebook page.

"It's an arranged marriage. The reason we got engaged in a hurry was because of the impending arrival of the Malayalam month of Karidakam, which is not considered very auspicious for ceremonies. Hence, the engagement was a private affair," Saranya told IANS.

"The engagement was only attended by our families and very close friends. The wedding will take place on September 6 in Kerala," she said.

Salman believes in word-of-mouth, not strategies

Superstar Salman Khan, who is gearing up for his film “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, doesn't believe in having a detailed promotional strategy for a film, but relies on taking the essence of its story to public through “spread of word”.

The actor also said that creating awareness about any film has become necessary due to the increase in media channels.

The 49-year-old shared his views about film marketing at a promotional visit for his forthcoming film “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” here on Tuesday.

“From our side, there is no strategy. The film’s team tells us to go and do the job and we do it. Earlier it was very simple with just All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan. It used to take just one hour to promote a film.

“But now there are so many channels and newspapers that if we miss one, they start doing negative stories. So, we basically try and go everywhere to spread awareness about the film and its storyline,” Salman told reporters here.

Along with the “Kick” star, director Kabir Khan, actors Kareena Kapoor Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, singers Mika Singh, Adnan Sami, Jubin Nautiyal and Amar Butala, CEO of Salman Khan Films were also present at the event.

The much-anticipated film, which will hit the screens on Friday, unfolds a story of a man and a dumb-mute girl as he takes her back to her home in Pakistan from India. It narrates all the adventures he stumbles upon during his journey to the other side of the border.

He was 87, and passed away due to geriatric problems.

On Tuesday, his body was shifted to his residence from the hospital for fans and well-wishers to pay their final respects.

They started composing together in 1952 but split up in 1965. Some of their best films include "Paasamalar", "Sumaithaangi", "Server Sundaram", "Aayirathil Oruvan" and "Enga Veetu Pillai".

Blackout for Pakistani movie 'Bin Roye' in Maharashtra

Bowing to demands from the Maharashtra Navnirman Chitrapat Karmachari Sena (MNCKS), Bollywood distributor B4U Films has decided to black out Pakistani movie "Bin Roye" in Maharashtra, an official said here on Wednesday.

The distributor submitted a letter to MNCKS President Amey Khopkar to the effect, confirming the movie would not be released in Maharashtra.

However, the movie would be released as scheduled all over India on Friday to coincide with the Eid festival.

The MNCKS had written to B4U on July 10 raising objections to the movie's release in the state and threatened to stop it in 'MNS style'.

Khopkar contended that Pakistan allegedly sponsors terror in the country, particularly Maharashtra, and it does not permit Indian artistes to work in that country, and warned against releasing the movie.

The company also cancelled a scheduled media preview show here on Wednesday after the decision to skip Maharashtra.

Khopkar assured B4U that MNCKS had no objection if the movie is released elsewhere in the country, following which the distributor is going ahead with plans to release "Bin Roye" nationally and globally on Friday.

"Unfreedom" actress Preeti Gupta has taken an initiative with a premium corporate training company to create awareness about gender equality at workplaces.

Along with Inner Katha, the corporate training company, Preeti is conducting workshop to raise awareness about gender diversity and challenges faced by women today at workplaces. She is performing plays which are based on the issue of gender sensitisation.

“I feel that in India there are still many unconscious and conscious biases that play out on a daily basis. Somewhere, men don't naturally think that women have business acumen or can lead, even if the women might be brilliant," she said.

"On the other hand, when it comes to men, there is a predisposition to treat them as 'equals', so this programme is to sensitise the coporate leadership and to encourage a balanced and inclusive environment at work and we are doing this by using theatre as a medium," Preeti, whose film “Unfreedom” touches upon homosexuality, said in a statement.

Preeti is looking to conduct workshops in various MNCs in Indian metros.

Trying to reach out to non-Marathi audience: Umesh Kulkarni

0
0

From releasing his Marathi movies with subtitles to promoting them via non-vernacular mediums -- National Award winning filmmaker Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni, who is awaiting the release of his new project "Highway" -- is making an effort "to reach out to non-Marathi" audiences and believes that platforms should be built to promote regional cinema across India.

"We are trying to reach out to a non-Marathi audience. There should be some kind of platform to promote these films. For Marathi cinema, every Friday there are two-three films releasing but at the same time there are several jewels which are not able to shine. This has to change. The government needs to take it forward. At least 10 regional films should be shown in every city," Kulkarni told IANS.

The director of award-winning Marathi films such as "Valu", "Vihir" and "Deeol" struggles to fathom why regional films are unable to reach "newer audiences".

"I'm struggling with the idea of why regional films are not able to reach newer audiences. I make it a point to release my films with subtitles. This time, I am trying to promote our film via non-vernacular avenues. We can't afford to compete with the kind of budget the Hindi films have. We can't reach out to the people otherwise," he added.

An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Kulkari also says that the reach of Marathi cinema will improve if the films are released in the major cities of India.

"Films should be releasing in the major cities like Delhi, Kolkata and others. That will also eventually change the way we look at regional films. There are lots of good things in each language. Also, the number of film festivals, especially Indian film festivals, have to increase," he added.

The unprecedented success of S.S. Rajamouli's magnum opus "Baahubali - The Beginning, which became the fastest Indian film to enter the Rs.100 crore club, is a testament to the fact that regional cinema indeed has a potential to make an indelible impact on the country's film fraternity.

Released in four languages -- Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi -- simultaneously, the film has surprisingly performed extremely well in all the languages.

In context of Marathi cinema, per se, the involvement of big names from Bollywood has also helped in spreading awareness of the industry among the consumers of Hindi cinema, says Kulkarni.

"My film 'Valu (The Wild Bull)' was distributed by Subhash Ghai's Mukta Arts, whereas 'Vihir (The Well)' was produced by megastar Amitabh Bachchan's AB Corp Limited. So, thanks to these names, my films got good promotion and reached more people," he said.

The involvement of B-town actors like Akshay Kumar -- whose production house Grazing Goat Pictures announced a Marathi film in 2016 -- Riteish Deshmukh and Manoj Bajpayee in regional cinema is helping the industry grow, says Kulkarni.

"It is easier when the Hindi film actors come and talk about these films. But for them to come and watch the films is another thing altogether. They talk a lot about the films, and it will help Marathi films to grow," he added.

Kulkarni's "Highway", not to be confused with the similarly-titled Hindi movie, is releasing on July 24.
