For her debut film "Second Hand Husband", Tina Ahuja had to shoot a scene when her co-star Gippy Grewal makes her wear his jacket to save her from cold. It made her a bit nervous, but then she knew it's all part of acting.

"There is a sequence where it was freezing cold and I was wearing this short skirt and shivering. I thought I'm not going to last and I will faint... giving all those romantic expressions and all of that... but I managed," said Tina, who is veteran actor Govinda's daughter.

"There was one time when Gippy had to make me wear his jacket and for a moment I thought why did I get into this (acting)... I want to run back home, because no boy had ever done that to me. It's a very normal thing (for people), but it is very different when one has to act it out," Tina added, saying that "in the end, it was fun".

"Second Hand Husband" is directed by Smeep Kang.

One of the pioneers of rap music in India in the 1990s, Baba Sehgal says numerous Indian rappers have emerged in recent times like Yo Yo Honey Singh but the current crop are self-obsessed and rap only about themselves.

"Rapping hasn't been explored in a big way in India. The rappers here only talk about themselves, or they talk about their cars or their horses," he told media at a promotional event for micro-blogging website Twitter.

He also rapped a few lines in Punjabi about the excessive usage of "bandook" (guns) and "kudiyan" (girls) in these rapper's songs.

"I use rap as a platform to get comedy and love back which is the trend that takes place in America. I'm a dedicated rapper and an extremely passionate rapper. "

After a so-called sabbatical in the 2000s, Baba has made a comeback of sorts with his witty tweets and music videos on Youtube including songs like "Chicken Fried Rice". For this revival, he credits Twitter.

This sabbatical though was only from the Hindi music scene, as he kept himself busy singing and acting in several films down south.

Along with gems of Indian media and entertainment industry, the sixth edition of Jagran Film Festival promises to unfold American cinematic culture with the US as the official partner country at the film extravaganza.

John Degory, deputy spokesperson of US embassy, said that cinema binds the two countries together making the "Indo-US partnership special" in many ways.

He also delivered a message at the inaugural ceremony of the five-day film fest at Siri Fort Auditorium here on Wednesday in Bollywood style -- "Yeh dosti hum nahi todenge."

"It is a great pleasure to represent American Centre and the US embassy today (Wednesday) as we launch the sixth edition of Jagran Film Festival. The United States is honoured to have been selected to be the partner country for this year's festival," Degory said.

"I feel fortunate to live in India -- a country which values cinema as much mine. I'm pleased that our countries are closer than they have ever been before and they are only getting closer. I could say quite a lot about the relationship between India and the United States, but I will leave with the words by Amitabh Bachchan in 'Sholay' -- 'Yeh dosti hum nahi todenge'.”

Under the partnership, some iconic Americcan films will be showcased in the American Centre at Kasturba Gandhi Marg here.

Degory emphasised that "Indians like Americans believe in the power of films".

"It is not just to entertain, but to inform and shape public opinion and discuss about important issues of our time like corruption, human rights and climate change. It's one of the many values that our countries hold and it is those values that makes the Indo-US partnership special," he said.

As "Masaan" opened the fest in presence of the internationally-acclaimed film's team including director Neeraj Ghaywan, actors Sanjay Mishra, Richa Chadha and Vicky Kaushal, Hollywood's "Argo" was also screened at the event.

Tom Hanks' epic romantic-comedy-drama "Forrest Gump" regaled movie buffs as the opening film in the Country Focus segment.

Degory pointed out that the ability to pick stories from the society and to paint them on a cultural canvas for the silver screen ties the cinema together.

"There are few countries in the world where cinema is so intertwined in the fabric of our society and culture that you find in India and the US. And since Saturday is our country's 239th birthday, I would like to thank Jagran for a fantastic birthday celebrations. I can think of no better or more American way to celebrate then watching a bunch of wonderful films,” Degory said.

Well, the edition of the film festival promises to treat cinema-goers with a bouquet of choice in various genres while narrating “a journey of perseverance, romance, creativity and hope”.

"These films run the gamut in terms of cinematic areas and genres and also pack social and historical issues -- from the dancing and singing in the 1920s inspired music in 'Chicago' or as I say an American style Bollywood film to the classic glamour in 'An American in Paris' to the one of the most challenging time of American history in '12 Years A Slave' and of course to an Indian and American cultural collide in “Million Dollar Arm',” the deputy spokesperson said.

Showcasing more than 100 feature and short films this year, the film gala has 20 films in the World Panorama section.

The edition of Jagran Film Festival will traverse from Delhi to cities like Kanpur, Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Dehradun, Hisar, Ludhiana, Patna, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Raipur, Indore, and Bhopal before culminating in Mumbai.

“I don't want to fall under any boundaries be it commercial cinema or independent cinema. My first film has a solid foundation due to its script. So if there is a good script and we think that we should do it then we will do it even if it is commercial,” Ghaywan said at an event here.

From her past relationships to announcing separation from her former husband Manish Makhija, Pooja has never shied upon talking about her personal life in public and she says she believes in living with full "freedom".

When I started, I used to hear from people that you can't have a boyfriend at the age of 19, I used to say 'Why not?'... The industry does not let women with an opinion and brain, get very far of the ladder because they want to look at you and they don't want to hear you.

Rachaittri Gupta to play female lead in 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani' play

0
0

Delhi-based theatre artist Rachaittri Gupta will play the female lead in the play adaptation of Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi starrer Bollywood drama "Hamari Adhuri Kahani".

The film's theatre version stars Imran Zahid as the male lead Aarav, a rich and suave hotelier, who falls in love with an already married florist, Vasudha -- the role for which Rachaittri has been cast.

The movie and the play are based on the novel "All That Could Have Been", co-written by veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and Suhrita Sengupta.

Talking about zeroing in on Rachaittri for Vasudha's part, Bhatt said: "When I started writing 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani', I wanted to plough through my childhood of having seen my mother fight the battles of single motherhood. Vasudha was built from that space and yet she flowers into a beloved in her matured years in the story.

"So finding a face for this character was crucial. Rachaittri will be able to bring to life all over again Vasudha on stage, of that I am confident."

Sengupta agrees Rachaittri is the perfect fit for the role.

"The character of Vasudha is an extremely deep and inspiring one. It took me tonnes of work to characterise her and bring her to the climax of the book as well as the film. When it was confirmed that Rachaittri is going to be Vasudha on stage, I was completely satisfied as her face emanates the depth we require," Sengupta said.

Rachaittri is nervous as well as excited about the part and says she doesn't want to let anyone down.

"I have done a lot of plays, but this one is quite different. Firstly, this is a Mahesh Bhatt production, the script is also Mahesh sir's, so I can't put him down. Secondly, the character I'm playing, was played by Vidya Balan, who has been my inspiration for quite some time.

"Thirdly, the character of Vasudha itself is very challenging. I'm really nervous and excited at the same time. But I will try my level best to not let anyone down," she said.

Actor-director Happy Ranajit, who will direct the play, says Rachaittri, who is currently playing the second lead in Bollywood musical "Zangoora" at Gurgaon-based live entertainment destination Kingdom of Dreams, is the perfect blend of glamour and talent.

"I was under pressure about the casting for the role of Vasudha and finally I selected Rachaittri as I had seen her in Kingdom of Dreams in the role of Lachhi. I liked her acting and I think she is a blend of glamour and talent, who can do justice to such a complex character and to the play," Ranajit said.

The play will reportedly be staged in Delhi before heading to Karachi.
