“The song is called 'yeh dil' which is a fun tune about freedom, love and the pursuit of magic .It was really fun tracking the song with Jubin Nautyal and Rocky Khanna- the writers of the song,” the actress said in a statement.

“ It was definitely a group effort as I needed to nail the recording right before getting on a plane to the US. But everything worked out great! The indie queen herself penned down a part of the song, something which was very challenging for her given her language barriers. Common sense to wear helmet when on a bike: Kamal Haasan

Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan is "sorry" for riding a bike in his forthcoming Tamil thriller "Papanasam" without a helmet, but says it's common sense to wear one when one steps out on a bike.

"We shouldn't have shot the bike scenes without a helmet, and I'm sorry for it," Kamal told IANS.

A poster featuring a helmet-less Kamal riding a moped along with co-stars Gauthami, Nivetha Thomas and Esther, has received a little flak from audiences, especially after the Tamil Nadu government made it mandatory to wear helmets all those who got on a bike.

"We shot the bike scenes long back, but that's not much of an excuse. We should've definitely thought of using a helmet. But I think it's common sense to wear a helmet when you step on a bike, just like you wear slippers while getting out," he said.

Directed by Jeethu Joseph, "Papanasam" is the remake of Malayalam hit Drishyam. It is slated for release on July 3.

Bollywood EDM next big thing, say young singers (June 21 is World Music Day)

$

0

The EDM (electronic dance music) scene in India will see burgeoning growth in times to come, say up and coming Bollywood singers like Armaan Malik and Nakash Aziz.

They feel the doors for EDM - a fusion of technology with dance beats - has opened up after performances by international DJs like David Guetta, Paul Van Dyk and Steve Aoki.

With creative visual effects and electronic dance numbers, these foreign names have attracted Indian crowds and built a huge fan following for EDM. Homegrown events like Royal Stag MTV Bollyland, which concluded in Mumbai last week, has however turned out to set an example of how EDM can be fused with Bollywood.

And this, artists feel, can drive EDM's popularity in the country.

"Saree ke fall sa" hitmaker Aziz says the genre is "evolving every day".

"EDM as a genre really lifts you up. It is just evolving every day. It's directly related to technology. As there will be technological advancement, it will get better. Music with technology has a bright future.

"So, it is but natural that electronic music will be a part of Bollywood," said Aziz, who gave an EDM performance in Mumbai last week as a part of the finale of Royal Stag MTV Bollyland, a multi-city concert that brings the genre and Bollywood together.

Akriti Kakar feels that Indian audiences have become extremely receptive to new genres and sounds. She credits the "internet revolution" for making the world a small place, where "all the genres are getting easily accessible".

"It's very well seen how Bollywood music is transcending across genres and a whole lot of dance music coming from the movies is EDM-influenced," said Akriti, who is happy that it's "growing and will continue to grow".

"Everyone wants to hear new sounds and evolution is expected in everything including music. So, EDM it is in Bollywood, making it Bollywood dance music," said the "Saturday Saturday" singer, who wants to sing "more and more of EDM".

Armaan, who started his adult singing career with an EDM track "Jai jai jai jai ho", finds the genre interesting.

"It's picking up in India. Now, it's not just about international artists. My brother (Amaal Mallik) had composed 'Sooraj dooba hai'. It is an out-and-out EDM song for a Bollywood film. So, we are progressing towards that change," said the 19-year-old, who wants to go beyond Bollywood.

"I would love to do a complete EDM album. As an artist, I am for non-film music as well. I want that to shine as much as Bollywood," he said.

The attempts to make EDM popular are aplenty, but it seems it's mostly the youth that connects well with the genre.

Talented musician Siddharth Mahadevan says people will either love it or won't, but "the genre is going to stay for a long time as you can't take dance out of music".

"It's really new age and I have a taste for it. Friends of my age group like it too. It connects well with the youth," said the 22-year-old son of acclaimed singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan.

In fact, he is excited about his "superb EDM song" in "Katti Batti", starring Kangana Ranaut and Imran Khan.

Singer Sukriti Kakar, a big fan of EDM, hails the fusion of the genre with Bollywood.

"Once you mix Bollywood with electronic dance music, it becomes interesting. I would like to do a song like 'Sooraj dooba hai'," said the "Pehli baar" hitmaker.

The genre has picked up so much that even someone like Jasleen Royal, an "acoustic and unplugged kind of person", doesn't mind trying her hand at EDM.

"I am not particularly into EDM for now, but maybe later I will get into it because that's how you evolve...by exploring different genres. EDM is something that you can dance to. It's party music.

"I was not into jazz or hip-hop before. So, you never know I might just do an EDM number in future," said the former contestant of singing reality show "India's Got Talent".

With so many young singers rooting for EDM and the rise of EDM festivals in the country, India seems to be the next hub of the genre.

Six and eight-packs are unhealthy: Leena Mogre

$

Celebrity fitness trainer Leena Mogre, who has trained B-town actors and actresses like Madhuri Dixit, John Abraham and Bipasha Basu, is wary of the six and eight-pack abs trend in Bollywood, saying that "it is not at all healthy."

"Six and eight packs are a creation of the media. The actors do it for their roles, but it is not at all healthy. It is not easily attainable and a strenuous process," she said.

While highlighting the negative effect of building six and eight-pack abs, Mogre said: "The body fat percentage deceases a lot during this process. Moreover, during film shooting there are a lot of devices like lighting, angles and shots through which six and eight-pack abs are enhanced."

Another advice to Bollywood from Mogre is: "Don't think short-term and plan for the long-term as long-term should be their actual goal. Like Madhuri Dixit, who is still fit at this age due to her focus on fitness."

She also said that fitness enthusiasts must "avoid steroids, eat healthy and stay healthy."

Mogre owns a chain of fitness centers and has also written a book "Total Fitness: The Leena Mogre Way."

Go beyond doting, dear daddies!

$

Bollywood's celebrity daddies like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Riteish Deshmukh and Akshay Kumar often share photographs of snuggling, cuddling, cycling or walking with their children. Experts say doting is fine, but also shoulder the mother in baby care as it helps in the right growth of a child.

A 2014 survey, commissioned by Himalaya Baby Care, on 298 fathers and 311 mothers from across Mumbai and Bangalore, indicates that 63 percent of Indian fathers are actively involved in keeping up with doctor and vaccination appointments.

But when it comes to taking care of their babies in the absence of the mother, 70 percent of the fathers do not feel confident enough to shoulder this responsibility.

In fact, while 44 percent of the mothers surveyed found the fathers to be very involved while bathing and feeding the baby, the fathers on the other hand felt nervous about not "doing it the right way".

Actor Imran Khan, who has one-year-old daughter Imara, says the priorities of a man changes after fatherhood.

"Once you become a parent, so many of our priorities get realigned in life. You start to realise that there are so many things that you used to earlier care about are completely unimportant now. Everything becomes about your relationship, your child and about your responsibilities towards your family," Imran told IANS.

According to the research findings, fathers these days "tend to do too much sometimes in all thewrong areas and too little when it comes to things that really matter".

What would help is to spend "quality time" with the child instead of "spending money for acquiring things for the child"; and send the right, not wrong message -- for example, if you try to shirk responsibility, you're teaching the child to do just that.

Also, shared parenting needs to be the order of the day, instead of dismissing most responsibilities as that of the mother.

"Both parents must be equally involved," Samir Parikh, chief, Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Hospital, told IANS.

Parikh advised that as a parent, "you don't have to be only a doting person or only an authoritative person. You have to create the right balance".

Also, as a father, one plays a very important role in impacting a child.

"What is the father doing at home... how much is he drinking... I have met many such children, who have abusive fathers, and those very kids become the same," Sanju Gambhir, child psychologist, Primus Hospital, told IANS.

So, be aware and careful, dear daddies!

From India to Hollywood: Yoga's rising popularity in the west

$
0

The magnitude of yoga's renaissance in the modern western world has made a huge impact on Hollywood celebrities, including names like Madonna, Beyonce Knowles, Reese Witherspoon, Charlize Theron and Robert Downey Jr. Many of them have found solace in this ancient discipline and have inspired their fans to follow in their footsteps.

The popularity of yoga among Hollywood celebrities hasn't gone unnoticed by Indian yoga experts, and they are fairly positive about its development and growth in the US.

Yoga guru and spiritual master Bharat Thakur, founder of Artistic Yoga, says that the "US has always been receptive to yoga".

"As Deepak Chopra commented, 'You can't find Indian restaurants but there are hundreds of yoga studios in the US'. Although not on the same scale as the US, yoga is also very popular throughout Europe as well," Thakur told IANS.

Thakur also recognised the importance of celebrities promoting yoga and said: "When celebrities do yoga, it's in the media and the public takes note of it. So, yes, it counts as it brings in an awareness of yoga and may encourage those who haven't done yoga to try it."

"Although people may not have tried it on their own, they read about celebrities doing yoga, breathing exercises and meditation and are encouraged to at least try it as well. So in this way, this has played a role in raising awareness of yoga and it's spread in the western world," he added.

Another expert, Pallavi Aggarwal, who heads Bikram Yoga's franchise in the capital's Rajouri Garden, says that yoga is now catering to a "wide audience."

"Yoga has higher popularity compared to aerobics and gym workouts. This industry is one of the very few industries that are catering to a wide audience as there are very less age and gender restrictions to practice yoga," Aggarwal told IANS.

An exponent of Bikram Yoga, a technique which incorporates techniques of traditional Hatha Yoga, Aggarwal, says that it is gaining popularity in the US and Europe.

"The contribution of Bikram Yoga is huge in making it popular. US and Europe are amongst the markets leading in trend charts thanks to the internet and the growing interest about health and fitness," she added.

Recognising Hollywood's contribution in the rising popularity of yoga, Aggarwal says that they both "have helped each other".

"Hollywood and yoga both have helped each other. Thanks to all the efforts made by Bikram Choudhury (the man behind Hot Yoga), who against all odds made it happen and now celebrities from almost all the fields are taking benefits from Bikram Yoga. Madonna, Jennifer Aniston, David Beckham, Brooke Shields, George Clooney are some of the followers of Bikram Yoga," she added.

She also feels that Hollywood celebrities have helped in spreading awareness about yoga among their fans as "people follow their role models and they are all in a way role models to many."

Widely renowned as the 'Queen of Pop', Madonna, 56, is an ardent follower of Ashtanga Yoga, and practices it for two hours every day, six days a week, according to a report by dailymail.co.uk.

Last year, Beyonce shook the Internet by posting a stunning image of herself on Instagram. She showed off her flexible, yoga-fit body in a blue bikini. The 33-year-old's post was a nod to the growing celebrity trend of sharing their pictures on Internet in diverse yoga poses.

With the rise of globalisation and consumerism, the west, especially the US, has been transfixed with the ideals of holistic living and adapting the spiritual and meditative lifestyle of yoga to counter fatigue and depression.

In recent years, several yoga institutes and studios have opened in the US, where both Indian and western yoga gurus are propagating ways to a healthy and spiritual life.

This trend has given a boost to the rising popularity of the ancient science in the west, where fans are flocking to yoga institutes to emulate their celebrity idols.

Mumbai-based celebrity fitness trainer Leena Mogre, popular for training names like Madhuri Dixit and Bipasha Basu, also believes that Hollywood has played a role in popularising yoga in the west.

"Hollywood stars have taken up yoga. They found peace of mind and they found that yoga gives benefits and it is a way of life," Mogre told IANS.

Praising Hollywood celebrities' attitude towards fitness and yoga, Mogre said: "They don't go overboard with their bodies. It becomes a part of their personality".

Even on home turf, names like Shilpa Shetty and Kareena Kapoor Khan have spoken out about the benefits of yoga. Their fit frames are there for all to see!
