Actress-singer Monica Dogra is beaming with joy at the response to her latest release "The Spectacular Jihad of Taz Rahim” in the US.

Monica is now looking forward to the film's release in India on June 26.

Directed by Raghav Murali, the Indo-American film stars Bangladeshi actor Rahsaan Islam in the lead opposite Monica, who essays a journalist in the film.

The film tells the story of Taz (Rahsaan), a rapper who is blackmailed to become an undercover agent by the New York Police Department (NYPD). It is loosely inspired by real-life incidents of NYPD, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Central Intelligence Agency's use of Muslim informants.

Their association with "ABCD" fame director Remo D'souza is old and strong as they have produced the music for all his movies, including the second part of the film titled "ABCD 2".

"We made the song in 2010 for his first film. But Remo stuck to it and said that we will use the song when the time is right," said Jigar Saraiya.

Remo and the composer duo waited five years before they could find the right project for the song.

"He (Remo) didn't let us use this song anywhere else, and he has shot it in a way we couldn't imagine. The song is beautiful, but watch out for the way Remo sir has shot it," he added.

Directed by Remo D'Souza, the film is slated to release on June 19. It also stars Prabhudheva and international dancer Lauren Gottlieb.

Filmmaker Kiran Rao says she was a "classic film school snob" who thought mainstream cinema was synonymous with "bad cinema".

"It's a coincidence that I returned from film school around the same time MAMI started. I was this classic film school snob who thought mainstream cinema was synonymous with bad cinema," Kiran said at a press conference on Wednesday held to unveil the 17th edition of the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) Film Festival.

"I thought I couldn't make my films here. Considering the period of the late 90s, mainstream was largely bad cinema," she said.

The dates for the MAMI Film Festival -- October 29 to November 5 -- were announced at the press conference.

Stating that film festivals are generally deemed "arty", Kiran clarified that it would be a blend of commercial and art house cinema.

"The mainstream cinema landscape has changed dramatically and now is in a position to start new relations with art house cinema. The situation is such that both of them can co-exist brilliantly, collaborating and infusing energies into each other. And MAMI plays a crucial role in this integration," she said.

Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan's upcoming Tamil-Telugu thriller "Thoongaavanam" is reportedly said to be the official remake of French film "Nuit Blanche" aka "Sleepless Night".

"Kamal's 'Thoongaavanam' is a remake of a foreign film. However, it's not clearly known which film it's based on as Kamal plans to reveal the news only before the film's release," a source told IANS.

Another source told IANS that it could be the official remake of "Sleepless Night".

The Frederic Jardin directorial film, released in 2011, shares a story about how a policeman has to save his son and his own reputation in a single night.

"Thoongaavanam" is also said to be the story that unfolds in a single night in a bar. Haasan plays a policeman, too.

Interestingly, French stunt choreographers Gilles Conseil, Sylvain Gabet and Virgine Arnaud, who have been hired to work in "Thoongaavanam", had also worked in the original.

The stunt team recently shot a high-octane chase sequence on the outer ring road in Hyderabad.

Haasan's long-time associate Rajesh Selva is directing the film, which also features an ensemble cast of Trisha Krishnan, Prakash Raj, Sampath Raj, Kishore, Madhu Shalini, Uma Riyaz and Yugi Sethu.

The film is titled "Cheekati Rajyam" in Telugu and is being produced by Kamal himself.

Producer Lagadapati Sridhar has acquired the Telugu remake rights of last year’s Tamil blockbuster “Goli Soda”, which was about four street urchins and their adventures for survival.

“I’ve bagged the remake rights of ‘Goli Soda’. I thought it was an extremely good film with great content. Moreover, it succeeded purely on the merit of content and didn’t require the presence of a star. The cast will be finalised soon,” Sridhar told IANS.

Sridhar is not new to remakes. His forthcoming Telugu romantic-drama “Krishnamma Kalipindi Iddarini”, which releases in cinemas on June 19, is the remake of Kannada film “Charminar”.

Talking about “Krishnamma...”, which is set against the backdrop of Krishna River, he said: “It’ll be a story that’ll be etched in the hearts of the audience”.

The film stars Sudheer Babu and Nanditha in lead roles.

Deepak Dobriyal all praise for Salman, Madhavan

He managed to leave his mark while sharing screen space with Kangana Ranaut and R. Madhavan in "Tanu Weds Manu Returns". But actor Deepak Dobriyal credits Salman Khan and Madhavan for carving a path for character actors in the Hindi film industry.

“There are two people - Madhavan and Salman Khan - who give space to their co-stars. It is because of them that the trend of increasing the length of role of actors, who are doing well in their films is finding inroads in Bollywood. They always emphasise on giving more scenes to good actors,” Deepak told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

The 39-year-old leaped into spotlight with the Aanand L. Rai's directorial with his witty one-liners with a straight face. Deepak's character named Pappi Singh, who played role of Madhavan's close friend, got appreciation from all quarters turning it into a fad.

The actor, who has also featured in movies like "Omkara" and "Dabangg 2", noted that Madhavan boosted his spirits on the sets of the film, which transpired through the camera.

“I would say Madhavan's involvement had a big role in how the character of Pappi Singh shaped up in the film. He used to clap and appreciate my performance in front of everyone. That filled me up with energy,” he said.

While Deepak is still coming to terms with the craze around Pappi Singh, he is all charged up with more rib tickling acts for his next film "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo", which also stars Salman and Sonam Kapoor.

The actor insists that his role in the Sooraj Barjatya's film involves a comic angle, but is different from "Tanu Weds Manu Returns".

“It's a funny character and is different from what I did in my previous film,” said the actor.

Conditions notwithstanding, Malaysian movie buffs lap up bold Hindi films

$

A liplock - once a big deal for the Indian silver screen - was given the miss at a screening of a latest Bollywood film in this principal city of Malaysia, where there are restrictions on sexual and religious content in movies. But Bollywood fans are undeterred by the government's guidelines and are lapping up bold content.

To Indian viewers at the screening of "Dil Dhadakne Do", on the sidelines of the 16th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards, an abrupt cut which replaced a kiss, came as a surprise.

For residents, it wasn't an eyebrow-raising moment.

"Any intimate scene or films related to sexuality are mostly trimmed or they get banned. I don't understand why the government has such guidelines because people can watch any film online," 25-year-old Rashmi, a Malaysian with roots in India, told IANS.

According to an article published in 2010 by the Jakarta Globe on movie censorship guidelines, Malaysia's censors "have loosened decades of restrictions on sexual and religious content in movies, but are still keeping a tight leash on sexually-charged kisses and tiny bikinis".

The article goes on to state that "Muslims could not be shown consuming alcohol and gambling earlier, but the new guidelines state that it would be permissible if the filmmaker wants to 'depict a person's transformation from being evil to good'."

Also, sex scenes, including "homosexuality and unnatural sex", and kissing on "body parts that could arouse sex, including the neck, chest and ears" were discouraged.

But Bollywood fans, as most shared, are open to any genre of films, including bold content as long as they are entertaining.

"I watched 'Margarita with a Straw' on DVD and really liked the content of the film. I like the fact that Bollywood is getting bold and experimental without compromising on the story," said Rashmi about the Kalki Koechlin-starrer, which discusses disabled people, their desires and sexuality.

It's vital to note that at one point in Hindi cinema, the coming together of two flowers was used metaphorically for a kiss. But the depiction of intimacy has come of age in recent times.

Another Malaysian Bollywood fan, 23-year-old Mira, who loves Shahid Kapoor's films, feels intimate scenes in movies are fine.

"I love Dharma Productions' films. Love is shown so beautifully in their films. I am okay with watching bold scenes as long as there is no negative impact on my life," she said.

Caroline Simon, whose grandparents are from Sri Lanka, says "Bollywood films are fun".

"The actors are good-looking and they seem to be nice people. I managed to see Karisma Kapoor and Bipasha Basu at events before in Kuala Lumpur. I am open to any genre. It all depends on the individual...how a person gets inspired," said Simon.

A die-hard fan of Bollywood, Edmund, who belongs to the Chinese community of Malaysia, says he likes to watch Bollywood films because of the way emotions are dealt with in the movies.

"I started watching Bollywood films three years back. The first Bollywood movie that I watched was 'Ferrari Ki Sawaari' while I was on a plane. I like to travel all over the world. I've been to India also. I think Kashmir is beautiful. I like 'Barfi!', '3 Idiots', 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' and 'Kai Po Che!'.

"I think 'Finding Fanny' was good too...it was different. 'Bombay Velvet' was great. I don't know why it didn't do well in India. The music and craftsmanship are so good. Even Ranbir Kapoor's acting is so natural," shared the enthusiastic Edmund, who watches at least one Bollywood film a week.

He is yet to see a movie of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, and is appreciative of the way Indian filmmakers are experimenting with genres.

Hema Arasan, 42, also has no qualms about watching movies with bold content, but said that there should be some control on films if children are watching.

"I mostly watch movies for entertainment. Bold themes are fine, but if children are watching, there should be some control," said Arasan, who is part of the approximately seven percent Indian community in Malaysia.

Not always evil, Christopher Lee as a good man onscreen

$
0
0

To people too young to have seen Bela Lugosi in the role of the evil Transylvanian count, Christopher Lee was Dracula personified - playing the character over half-a-dozen times. His other famous roles were no less malignant - including Frankenstein's Monster, Dr Jekyll and his sinister alter ego Mr Hyde, Fu Manchu, Rasputin, Scaramanga - a master assassin who intends to kill James Bond - and the Devil. But the accomplished actor could occasionally also be seen battling evil.

Lee, who died on Sunday but whose demise was announced only on Thursday, was most identified with Dracula, as he played the character in seven of the nine films of the series produced by the Hammer Film Company, from "Dracula" (1958) to "The Satanic Rites of Dracula" (1973) as well as two German films, Lee, who with his piercing eyes, saturnine looks, and wolfish grin did not need to be made up to look sinister, resisted getting typecast.

At the same time he was appearing as Dracula, he played one of his most famous roles, though largely forgotten now, where he combated evil, instead of spreading it. This was in "The Devil Rides Out" (1967), based on best-selling British author Dennis Wheatley's eponymous 1934 novel about a band of friends determined to save one of their number from getting embroiled in Satanic rituals.

Lee, who introduced Wheatley - with whom he shared experience of intelligence work in the Second World War - to Hammer, played the role of the Duc le Richelieu, an elderly, worldly-wise Frenchman settled in London, with a good knowledge of fighting occult evil. One of Hammer's most famous films, it also starred Charles Grey (familiar to Bond fans as Dikko Henderson of "You Only Live Twice" and Blofeld of "Diamonds are Forever") as the villain Mocata, while one of Richelieu's young friends was Paul Eddington, who would go on to be famous as Jim Hacker of "Yes Minister" and "Yes, Prime Minister".

Hammer adapted another Wheatley novel "To the Devil a Daughter", but here, production difficulties made the author disassociate himself and the film plot has little in common with the book. Lee, however, was again the villain, playing the excommunicated, heretical Father Rayner, who is determined to get a young girl (Nastassja Kinski) for a powerful Satanic ritual.

Lee's next positive role was of another iconic literary character famous for battling crime - Sherlock Holmes, no less!

This was not Lee's first brush with the master detective of Baker Street, having played Sir Henry Baskerville to his long-time co-actor and close friend Peter Cushing's Holmes in a 1959 remake of the "Hound of the Baskervilles". But in two TV films, he gave Holmes a new interpretation as an elderly detective on the verge of retirement but with no loss of mental acuity.

"Sherlock Holmes and the Leading Lady" (1991) deals with him asked to foil a plot to assassinate the Austro-Hungarian Emperor and thus spark a European conflict, while "The Incident at Victoria Falls" (1992), set in South Africa and then Rhodesia, is about Holmes entrusted with escorting a priceless diamond from Cape Town to London - and recovering it when it gets stolen. Both draw in various historical characters, including Dr. Sigmund Freud in the first, and ex-US president Theodore Roosevelt in the other.

But Lee despite all his evil roles had a human side too.

Sammy Davis Jr., of once the Frank Sinatra-led Ratpack, who acted with Lee in TV comedy film "Poor Devil" (1973), recites in his autobiography "Hollywood in a Suitcase" how he once frightened Lee senseless by suddenly flashing a set of fake fangs at him.

"Never do that again to me," appealed the Dracula of the silver screen, recalled Davis.

After news of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) students going on indefinite strike to protest against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as chairman surfaced, the actor and BJP member says he deserves a chance to showcase his capabilities before being judged.

He also urged for a meeting with the students to “sit and talk over” the matter before coming to any conclusions.

“Without knowing my background, without knowing me, without knowing my capabilities, they (students) have decided on their own (to protest).

"I would request them to have a meeting across the table, sit and talk over. If you still feel (the same) then we will go for another option. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken its own time to decide about my name. They must have checked out my background and my capabilities. It is not only that I am associated with the party, there are other things also," Chauhan told Times Now.

As per reports, the students of the institute went on an indefinite strike, saying that the appointment is politically motivated.

Chauhan is best known for essaying the role of 'Yudhisthir' in BR Chopra's “Mahabharat” and has also featured in small roles in various films like “Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge” and “Baghban.”

A report also read that the “students council sought immediate appointment of another chairman who is 'qualified with a significant body of work to do justice to the institute'.”

When contacted, Harishankar Nachimuthu- president of the students' body, said that they are yet to decide on their future course of action.

"We are having some internal discussions. We are actually strategising things as the institute will open only on Monday. Boycott was not necessary today as it is a holiday,” Nachimuthu told IANS over phone.

Meanwhile, Chauhan emphasised that he has been part of the entertainment industry for the “last 34 years” and urged students to let him come and work.

The Press Information Bureau announced Chauhan's appointment through a release on Tuesday.

A civil judge issued arrest warrants for Pakistani actress Irtiza Rubab, better known by her stage name Meera, on an application filed by her self-proclaimed husband Attiqur Rehman. The judge has ordered police to produce her before the court on the next date of hearing.

Rehman claims that Meera had entered into a marriage contract with him and later married Captain Naveed Pervaiz in 2013. He further claims that Meera entered into a second marriage contract while still being married to him, reports dailytimes.com.pk.

The Civil Judge Lahore Cantt. ordered Meera to appear before the court multiple times but the actress failed to make an appearance. The court on Friday issued her arrest warrant and has ordered Meera to be presented in court at the next hearing on July 17.

However Meera denies that she received any notice so far.

"I don’t know him, he is a fraudulent person. He is a criminal, if there is a statement from his end, I know nothing of it. He is blackmailing me for the past five years. He is a blackmailer, this must be another tactic of his to get fame,” she added.

Don't let strike hamper work: Jahnu Barua on FTII stir

$

Commenting about the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) students going on an indefinite strike to protest against the appointment of actor and BJP member Gajendra Chauhan as chairman, multiple National Award-winning filmmaker Jahnu Barua says students should put their point of view forward without putting their work on the back-burner.

"The students are concerned about the institute. But they should not go on strike and neglect work. They should not let the work suffer," Barua told IANS over phone.

As per reports, the students of the institute went on an indefinite strike from Friday, saying that the appointment is politically motivated.

Chauhan is best known for essaying the role of 'Yudhisthir' in BR Chopra's "Mahabharat" and has also featured in small roles in various films like "Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge" and "Baghban."

A report also said that the "students council sought immediate appointment of another chairman who is 'qualified with a significant body of work to do justice to the institute'."

The Assamese director, who has also received the Padma Bhushan honour due to his contribution to art over the years, refrained from talking about Chauhan's eligibility for the position.

"It is nothing to be happy or dissatisfied over. I would not like to comment on qualification," he added.

In an interview with Times Now, Chauhan urged the students to give him a chance to showcase his capabilities before judging him.

And Barua also noted that he deserves a "chance".

"Giving him a chance is not a problem. It is just that sometimes reservation creeps in so the government should justify that. Our main concern is about the institute," Barua said.

The director went on to add that a person who is aware about "the art of filmmaking" is well suited for the position of chairman.

Barua, who is also named as a member of the FTII society and a FTII alumnus, mentioned that he is "emotionally attached with the institute".

"I'm always there for the institute and I have an emotional attachment towards it. It is my duty to let the government and people know when I see something wrong," he added.

The uproar over the appointment of actor and BJP member Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) followed by an indefinite strike by students created a lot of buzz with Chauhan asking for a chance to showcase his capabilities and filmmakers like Jahnu Barua and Vivek Agnihotri saying that the institute needs a more experienced cinema personality.

Multiple National Award-winning filmmaker Barua also noted that students should put their point of view forward without keeping their work on the back-burner.
