Hollywood quality on limited budget will be achievement: Rajamouli

$
0
0

Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, who is awaiting release of his highly anticipated multilingual film "Baahubali", believes it will be an achievement if Indian cinema can produce Hollywood quality content within limited budget.

"Hollywood is much ahead of us in writing and execution. There's no need to compare our work with theirs. I think getting 80 percent of their quality in our content with 20 percent of their budgets will be an achievement," Rajamouli told IANS in an exclusive interview.

His film "Baahubali", which is being touted as India's most expensive film made on Hollywood standards, is slated for worldwide release on July 10.

The two-part Indian epic film is being made simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil languages. The film will also be dubbed into English, French, Hindi, Malayalam and in several foreign languages.

It was through the pages of Amar Chitra Katha comics, Rajamouli envisioned the world of "Baahubali", which is said to be the story of two brothers for a kingdom.

"My father had introduced me to these comics at a young age. Ever since then, I've been living in this world of larger than life characters. I love fantasy, history, folklore and mythology. I dabbled a little with these genres in my previous films. The success of those films gave us confidence to make 'Baahubali'," he said.

But it takes more than confidence to set a project of this scale in motion. It required someone with more than just moolah muscle. Rajamouli found all the required qualities in his producer Shobu Yarlagadda, who had previously worked with him in "Maryada Ramanna".

"I'd discuss everything ranging from the smallest detail to the development of characters with Shobu and his team. He would never let the pressure of budget and deadlines come near me. And my line producer Srivalli single handedly managed the mammoth scale of production," he said.

It took nearly two years to complete the film, not to forget another year that was spent on the pre-production.

What kept the team motivated?

"I developed an emotional attachment with the characters my father had narrated. To showcase these characters in the best possible way remained my motivational factor over the last two and half years," explained Rajamouli, and added that the team always draws the motivation from the director.

The film features an ensemble cast of Prabhas Varma, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, Tamannah Bhatia, Sathyaraj, Nasser and Ramya Krishnan.

Without Prabhas, Rajamouli admits, he couldn't have done this film.

"Prabhas and I are good friends. I knew he was my hero from the beginning. When I requested him to set aside one year for the film, he kept himself free for two years. Rana was our energy booster on the sets. He brought us and Dharma Productions together," he said.

Thanks to Rana, the team managed to get Karan Johar to market the Hindi version of "Baahubali".

The biggest contribution to "Baahubali" comes from its visual effects (VFX) supervisor Srinivas Mohan, who breathed life into an imaginary world with awe-inspiring visuals.

Srinivas along with over 15 VFX studios and 600 artists are still working on the film round the clock.

"Pete Draper of Makuta is responsible for the magnificent waterfalls and the palaces from the trailer. Firefly and EFX Hyderabad have contributed a lot of VFX shots through the course of the film, especially in the war sequences. Tau films are taking care of the scenes featuring the bison," Rajamouli said.

Thousands of people worked on the film. Although Rajamouli hasn't kept track of the numbers, he says it was every individual's working spirit that resulted in the successful completion of the project.

"We never got into putting the numbers together. We shot the war sequences for four months. At one point of time, we were shooting with 2000 extras with about 600 technicians assisting them with costumes, makeup and weapons," he said.

"There were hundreds of metres of chroma screens. About 30-35 assistants' job was to ensure the chroma mats weren't blown away. There were always two ambulances on set, a medical camp for people and a vet on standby for the animals," he added.

Did Rajamouli ever feel all of this was too much to handle?

"Just before the start of the shoot, the sheer enormity of the logistics hit me. For about three to four days, I contemplated quitting. But the feeling washed over and I never looked back," he said.

Calling songs 'item' numbers sounds cheap: Ehsaan Noorani

$
0
0

Musician Ehsaan Noorani of hugely successful trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy says terming a song as an "item" number makes it sound "cheap".

The composers have given music lovers hit "item songs" like "Kajra re" and "Main aayi hoon UP, Bihar lootne", but Noorani doesn't like the genre to be called "item" numbers.

"Item is a bad word. It sounds cheap. You can call it a dance number. We don't make songs with scantily-dressed actresses in our mind. We just want people to dance to our songs," Noorani told IANS after a music workshop at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards being held here from June 5 to 7.

After "Kajra re", which came out a decade back, the trio hasn't released similar songs.

Is it because almost every Bollywood movie has an item song?

"We just follow scripts. That's why our sound and style changes from script to script, " said Noorani, who along with Shankar Mahadevan and Loy Mendonsa, gave the first trance Bollywood song "Koi kahe kehta rahe" to music lovers.

The musician, who is passionate about playing guitar, says most of the movies made during 1980s and 1990s were made "just for the heck of it".

"The art had gone out of it. So the music also suffered. Things started changing from '1942: A Love Story', then Karan Johar and Farhan Akhtar started making good movies. I think our sensibilities match with younger people," he said.

The artist, who has an advertising background, believes that there is a lot of pressure in making music for films.

"We need to maintain certain aesthetics and also keep in mind that the music we make is commercial and not what we like to listen to.

"The audience is growing. They listen to everything so, the pressure is more," he said.

Any album in the pipeline?

"We have been trying to come out with one since the last 18 years, but there is no time," said Noorani, who is working on music for films like "Katti Batti" and "Rock On 2".

"'Rock On 2' will have rock music, but it will be different from the first part," he said while talking about the film which will star Farhan.

The heavy metal mania gripped music lovers here as they congregated for the fourth edition of Bangalore Open Air (BOA) 2015 to get a taste of heavy metal artists from the world and sway on the heaviest and loudest music.

Over a 1,000 heavy metal fans from all across the country gathered for the festival at the Royal Orchid Resort & Convention Centre on Saturday.

Globally acclaimed heavy metal bands Napalm Death (Britain), Inquisition (US) and Belphegor (Austria) gave the festival a fitting and foot thumping end.

The event, which began on May 31, featured 32 bands and spanned over a period of seven days.

On the concluding day, there was a lot to cheer for the hordes of black-clad, long-haired metal fanatics, who descended at the lush green locales of Yelahanka here to witness one of the most-talked about lineups in India's metal history.

The enthusiasm of the fans, who stayed at the venue for over six hours, was unparalleled as they screamed and shouted for their favourite acts.

Napalm Death played tracks from their new album "Apex Predator- Easy Meat". Their frontman Mark "Barney" Greenway said that he was glad to come to India and play a show.

"Bangalore has always been a good host for metal concerts. When I wasn't living here, I always used to travel here for the gigs. It feels good to come here to watch your favourite artists and meet all the people you know from the internet," Varun, an engineer and a regular concert-goer, said at the event.

Nishant Raj, a digital marketing professional, who travelled all the way from New Delhi to be a part of the concert became emotional after seeing the powerful performances.

"I was teary-eyed after I sang along to Inquisition, one of my biggest musical influences. Napalm Death and Belphegor wrecked the whole place apart with their power-charged stage presence. My life is now complete, I can finally die in peace," Raj said.

The fest is inspired by Germany's Wacken Open Air festival, one of the world's biggest heavy metal festivals and was created to promote heavy metal music in India.

The festival organisers plan to make fifth edition bigger as they will host Swedish heavy metal act Soilwork and Polish metal legends Vader on July 9, 2016.

Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan and the team of his forthcoming film "ABCD 2" came together to promote a range of beauty brand Pond's Pollution Out face wash at the glitzy event here.

The "Main Tera Hero" actor, who already endorses Pond's, says he wanted to bring the brand on board to promote one of his previous films too, but it didn't fit the movie well. However, with "ABCD 2", the product has turned out to just right.

"It's a great integration... with 'Badlapur' there was obviously no fit, but with 'ABCD2' there was a direct fit. I am a dancer (in the film), there is energy, it's youthful... so, I think the fit was really well," Varun told IANS.

"ABCD 2" is a 3D film, and for the event, the team staged a 4D projection performance.

"I was like an excited child," Varun said.

The "Anybody Can #GetRecharged" gala started with a performance by composer duo Sachin-Jigar, who have worked on the tunes of the dance-based entertainer "ABCD 2", a sequel of "ABCD - AnyBody Can Dance".

"We are pretty excited as 'ABCD2’ is very close to our hearts. We have been working on it for about a year and a half, and so we are looking forward," Sachin told IANS.

The finale act at the event saw Varun -- who has been a part of the Pond's Men family for the past two years -- sporting a boy-next-door's look in a white t-shirt, jeans and a red cap. He danced on the tunes of "Bezubaan phir se" and "Naach meri jaan" to present Pond's Men -- Pollution Out face wash, which contains coffee bean icy scrub and activated carbon -- through 4D technology in a dance choreographed by Remo D'Souza.

The product is to keep skin issues caused by pollution, at bay.

"This deep cleansing face wash with coffee bean icy scrub and activated carbon will remove dirt and pollution particles from your skin and leave you feeling energised," said Srinandan Sundaram, vice president, skincare and colours, Hindustan Unilever.

I might make a children's film: Mohit Suri

"Aashiqui 2" director Mohit Suri, who was blessed with a daughter earlier this year, says he may make a children's film in future.

"A little bit of us always bleeds into our film. I think everything changes -- if my father's death changed me, my daughter's birth will also change me. Maybe I might make a children's film," Mohit said here.

"I know Anurag Basu is doing that with 'Jagga Jasoos'. He realised how his children reacted to 'Barfi!' more than his other films and that's why he is making this film for his daughters," Mohit added.

After the success of "Aashiqui 2" and "Ek Villian", Mohit is now promoting "Hamari Adhuri Kahani", which is releasing on Friday.

Asked what prompted him to direct the mature story on unrequitted love, he said: "Change happened to me with 'Aashiqui 2'. I stopped trying to impress with skills and techniques... special effects are not me as a person. I stopped lying to myself and I thank my wife Udita (Goswami) for that for letting me be the person I want to be."

"Marriage made me come to terms (with it), so then I did 'Aashiqui 2' and 'Ek Villain'. I just put my heart in and the emotional part started coming in," he said.

"Hamari Adhuri Kahani" features Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan and Rajkumar Rao.

Post the new film, Suri will be working on a remake of "The Intouchables", to be produced by Karan Johar.

"I have not cast anyone yet. I have changed the story from that of an older man and younger man to a story of two young men, since it's about friendship," he said.

IIFA brings Bollywood fans, stars closer in Malaysia

$

It was high on star power, Bollywood business and interactive sessions with global fans. The 16th edition of International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards, which concluded on Sunday after three days of entertainment and fun, saw a galaxy of stars regaling their umpteen fans in the Malaysian capital.

With names like Hrithik Roshan, Anil Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra in attendance, the gala attracted many star-struck admirers from across the globe.

"It just gets better each year. It's a vast project with budget between $10 million and $25 million," Viraf Sarkari, director, Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt Ltd, which promotes IIFA Weekend and Awards globally each year, told IANS.

After travelling to locations like London, Dubai, Macau, Toronto, Singapore and Tampa Bay, the IIFA extravaganza came back to Malaysia for the second time for its 16th edition, and the organisers were not disappointed at all.

"The Putra Indoor Stadium (venue of the awards ceremony, which was held on Sunday) can accommodate over 8,000 people and all the tickets were sold out," said Sarkari.

Established in 2000, the gala was held at Genting Highlands Resort, Malaysia, in 2002.

The edition was hailed by many Bollywood fans, who consider the three-day gala to be perfect platform to meet their idols.

"Indian cinema is getting popular day by day. The fans hardly get a chance to meet the stars and the stars also find it difficult to connect with their global fans like this. IIFA is the perfect platform to bring them close to each other," he said.

The fans got a chance to catch Hrithik live in action at Pavilion mall, where he interacted with his fans and performed impromptu as well.

Before the special screening of the multi -starrer movie "Dil Dhadakne Do ", fans also got to shake hands, click selfies and take autographs from their favourite celebrities like the movie's stars Priyanka, Anil, Farhan Akhtar and Anushka Sharma.

There was a business forum too where there were discussions on film tourism.

In its 'sweet' 16 edition, IIFA saw a string of stars, but unlike previous editions, any international names were missing from the list of star attendees.

"We invite Hollywood celebrities every year and they decide whether to come or not," explained Sarkari.

Talking about how IIFA is "not just any awards show", he added: "There are so many events that take place within three days."

Hosted by actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra, IIFA Rocks, an exclusive music extravaganza, saw a host of musical performances by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Mika, Ankit Tiwari, Kanika Kapoor and Javed Ali. Sonakshi also displayed her singing skills at IIFA Rocks.

There was also a dose of fashion at the Fashion Extravaganza, hosted by actors Vivek Oberoi and Neha Dhupia. It saw quirky designs by Masaba Gupta, who presented a line inspired by the IIFA trophy.

Rocky S also grabbed attention of fashionistas with his evening wear and dresses. Gaurang Shah wowed the audience with his ethnic wear creations.

The party ended on a starry note with actors like Hrithik, Anushka, Priyanka Chopra, Parineeti, Shraddha Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor setting the stage on fire with their electrifying performances on the final day.

The hosts of main awards ceremony this year -- the crackling duo of actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, who were in trouble for the controversial AIB Roast video earlier this year -- made many roll with laughter with their strong punchlines.

All in all, the IIFA edition was as glitzy as it could get.
