Beauty of India keeps calling us back: Vengaboys band

$

Remember the 1990s dance anthems like "We like to party" or "Boom boom boom"? After crossing borders with their peppy music and creating a buzz in the party scene across the globe, Vengaboys, the Dutch pop band behind these musical gems, is "curious" to learn about Indian music and hopes to work with an Indian artist, saying the "beauty of India keeps calling us back".

"We're not very aware of the Indian music scene, but are very curious to learn more of it. It would be pretty exciting to collaborate with an Indian artist and make some good music," Vengaboys member Robin Pors told IANS in an e-mail interview on behalf of the band.

The Eurodance group members showed off their musical pitch at an electrifying evening at The Courtyard, Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla in Mumbai last month. They performed here after over a decade as they had last visited India in 2001.

Pors says it's the "crowd" and "beauty of India" which make them come back.

"The people have always been so warm-hearted, kind and welcoming, which has left a big impression on us. When we toured here last time, fans went crazy and turned up in hounds. It absolutely delights us to see so many people enjoy our music. Also, the beauty of India keeps calling us back," he said.

Vengaboys, formed in 1996, ushered in a new trend into the music world with flamboyant costumes, energetic beats and party numbers infused with animated videos. And now Indian rustic beats have captivated their attention.

Bollywood uses musical notes to express myriad feelings - be it the romance, separation or happiness. Pors notes that if Bollywood comes calling for them, the band would be more than happy to feature on the Indian silver screen.

"We would love to feature in a Bollywood movie," said Pors, and added that they blended Indian beats and tunes into one of their singles.

"We don't release all the music that we make. Yes, we have made a song that's influenced by Indian music, but we never released it," he added.

Bollywood stands for many things - its larger than life feel, the glitterati, melodious music and exuberant dance moves - all entwined into one for a perfect entertainment dose.

For Pors, it is the "music , dance and crazy fans" that spells out Bollywood's charisma.

The band's music is termed as the livewire at any party, and Vengaboys takes pride in that.

"We would love to be known as a party act rather than 1990's pop act," Pors said.

The Vengaboys jukebox hit a roadblock when the group parted ways in the early 2000s, but the lull was soon overlapped with a bang as the band reunited in 2007. Apart from Pors, the band consists of Donny Latupeirissa, Denise Post-Van Rijswijk and Kim Sasabone.

They came with "The Platinum Album" in early 2010. The "Rocket to Uranus" single marked their reunion. Another album "Xmas Party Album" came in 2014.

A lot has changed since 1990 in the music industry. Accepting the fast forward mode in the music world, Pors says, they have infused the change in their music to catch up with the trend.

"Music today has evolved to a great extent since then. The beats have become complex. We have tried to incorporate as much of it in our latest album while remaining true to ourselves. We love the pop scene as it is today. A lot of great artists have joined the pop pool," he said.

Veteran film producer Mukesh Bhatt, under whose banner Vishesh Films the movie is being released, says he has "very rarely found a song that expresses the story between two people so strongly".

"This heartbreaking song from Rahat has given great power to our love saga. Only a singer like him could capture the soul of this situation," Bhatt said.

Film maestro Satyajit Ray's widow Bijoya Ray, a lifelong inspiration for the master, died at a private nursing home here on Tuesday following an acute pneumonia attack, a nursing home spokesman said.

Bijoya Ray, 98, left behind her filmmaker son Sandip, daughter-in-law Lalita and grandson Souradeep.

"She was admitted to our nursing home on Saturday noon following an acute pneumonia attack. She was under the treatment of physician Swapan Pal. She passed away at 6.06 p.m.," Belle Vue Clinic chief executive officer P. Tondon told IANS.

She had been put on ventilator support as her conditioned worsened after admission.

Bijoya Ray was born Bijoya Das to Charu Chandra Das, a barrister and Madhuri Devi, younger sister of nationalist leader 'Deshbandhu' C.R. Das's wife Basanti Devi.

A gifted Rabindra Sangeet singer, who also acted in some films, Bijoya married her first cousin Satyajit in 1949 after years of courtship.

Till the legendary filmmaker's death on April 23, 1992, Bijoya was a big influence on and inspiration for Satyajit Ray.

She even pawned all her jewellery as Satyajit Ray ran out of money during the shooting of "Pather Panchali", a landmark film that broke Indian stereotypes to create a new idiom of film viewing in India and placed the country in the global cinema map.

She was always the first person that Satyajit Ray read out his film scripts to, and often carried out modifications based on her suggestions.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accompanied by her ministers Firhad Hakim and Arup Biswas, rushed to the nursing home to pay her tributes.

There will be the glitz, glamour and the business of Bollywood at the forthcoming edition of the three-day International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards from June 5. It promises to be "larger than life" with a focus on commercial opportunities between host country Malaysia and India.

After travelling to London, Dubai, Macau, Toronto and Singapore, the IIFA extravaganza, which celebrates Indian cinema annually abroad, is heading to Malaysia for the second time for its 16th edition. Established in 2000, the gala was held at Genting Highlands Resort, Malaysia, in 2002 and, if one goes by the buzz, this edition will attract a whole lot of Bollywood fans.

"This edition is coming of age. It will be larger than life. There is also growing support of film industries from international countries for the IIFA movement and that's important," Sabbas Joseph, director, Wizcraft International Entertainment, the organisers of IIFA, told IANS.

"We will be promoting Malaysia in a big way. There will be exciting opportunities for tourism... Trade and business opportunities between Malaysia and India are definitely focus for us. Later in the year, the ASEAN Summit will take place (in Malaysia) too; so it is a great building ground for that," he added.

With delegates expected from various countries like China, Sri Lanka and Thailand, a "white paper will be launched on day one at the business forum where we will talk about the power of film tourism".

IIFA has seen Hollywood stars like Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Kevin Spacey and John Travolta gracing the gala in its various editions. But any foreign talent this year has been kept under wraps till the last minute.

Among those from Bollywood who will light up the stage at the Stadium Putra here on the awards night on June 7 are Hrithik Roshan, Anushka Sharma, Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Parineeti Chopra, Shraddha Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Shahid Kapoor.

"It will be larger than life," Joseph stressed.

Hosted by actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra, IIFA Rocks, an exclusive music extravaganza, will see a host of musical performances by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Mika, Ankit Tiwari, Kanika Kapoor, Javed Ali and the Nooran sisters.

Sonakshi, who will be soon seen as a judge on singing reality show "Indian Idol Junior", will also display her singing skills at IIFA Rocks on June 5.

"There will be some exciting first-ever too at the IIFA Weekend and Awards. Sonakshi is going to take the stage as a singer at IIFA Rocks," he said.

He is also excited about the hosts this year -- the crackling duo of actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, who were in trouble for the controversial AIB Roast video earlier this year.

"You can imagine the madness, magic and mischief," Joseph said.

Another highlight will be the screening of "Dil Dhadakne Do".

"The complete star cast will be in attendance. They will interact with fans and people from the film industry," said Joseph, about the Zoya Akhtar directorial, starring Anil Kapoor, Ranveer, Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar and Anushka Sharma.

There will also be a dose of fashion at the Fashion Extravaganza on June 6.

Hosted by actors Vivek Oberoi and Neha Dhupia, it will see quirky designs by Masaba Gupta, who will present a line inspired by the IIFA trophy.

"We've got Fashion Extravaganza featuring Rocky S, Masaba and Gaurang Shah. There will be different kinds of collections from each of them. Masaba is doing a special collection for IIFA. It is inspired by the trophy... the gold and black. It has the sun graphics also because the IIFA trophy is inspired by the sun," said Joseph.

Writer-filmmaker Subhash Ghai, known for making movies like "Karz", "Hero", "Karma", "Saudagar", "Khalnayak", "Pardes" and "Taal", will be conferred the lifetime achievement award.

With about 800 Indian delegates, consisting of business officials, people from the film industry, dancers and models, flying to Kuala Lumpur for IIFA, Joseph promises that it will offer "different dances, style and more".

Cinestar Amitabh Bachchan, who has been roped into field publicity for DD Kisan, says he has in the past tried to save some farmers' homes, but he asserts that collective efforts need to be made to battle the grave issue of farmer suicides in the country.

A record 1,306 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra during the one year of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in office - between May 20, 2014, to May 25, 2015, according to a farmers' watchdog body.

"It is a most sad occurrence to hear of farmer suicides. I have personally tried to do my bit in trying to save several homes by paying off their debts -- around 40 families in Andhra and around 50 in Vidarbha. But individual effort is not enough," the 72-year-old told IANS.

"I do read and believe the government of India is seized of the situation and are doing their best to fight this unfortunate happening," he added.

There has been news that the thespian will feature in audio-visuals and radio jingles to promote the newly launched government-backed channel for farmers.

Talking about it, he said: "DD Kisan is a new TV channel for farmer-based programs by Doordarshan. I have worked in the campaign launching of the channel."

The idea for the actor's involvement for the channel is said to have come from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with whom Amitabh closely worked on the Gujarat tourism campaign.

But he said, "The Honourable Prime Minister has not approached me personally" to endorse DD Kisan.

Big B himself got the farmer tag in 2010 when he bought the land in Muzzaffarnagar village of Kakori, 23 km from Lucknow for Rs.3.03 crore ($482,000).

The Uttar Pradesh Seed Corporation then registered the iconic film actor as a farmer-member and provided him with a hybrid seed programme for his land, which got a yield of 200 quintals of wheat thanks to advanced tractors, threshers and other equipment.
