'Umrao Jaan' director Muzaffar Ali wraps up 'Jaanisaar'

0
0

Filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, who gave Indian cinema the cult classic “Umrao Jaan” three decades ago, has completed work on his new period drama “Jaanisaar”, starring Pakistani actor Imran Abbas Naqvi.

The film, which is set in year 1877, also marks the acting debut of stylist and costume designer Pernia Qureshi.

“‘Jaanissar’ is set in the period when we lost the First War of Independence in 1857, a time when the British created a subjugated nation,” Muzaffar said on the last day of the shoot here on Tuesday.

“The story deals with a love story in which the boy is westernised and the girl is deeply rooted in the ethos of Indian culture,” he added.

The last day of the shoot witnessed filming of a special song sequence featuring the lead pair. The Sufi song has been composed by the director himself along with Shafqat Ali.

“I have chosen lyrics on my own. Lyrics are taken from the poetry of Wajid Ali Shah and Rahi Masoom Raza. In total we have around seven to eight songs in the film,” said the 70-year-old.

The artist, who is also a fashion designer, poet, music lover and a lot more, is also known for making other Bollywood films including “Gaman” and “Anjuman”. He has, however, not gone behind the camera for over a decade.

Asked why he decided to return to the silver screen after such a long gap, Muzaffar said: “I pick subjects which are lessons for the country. I was doing a few more things which couldn’t see the light of day. Since last 10 to 15 years I was working on several scripts. Fortunately, this script caught producer’s mind and we made it finally."

Extensively shot in Lucknow and a few other cities in Uttar Pradesh, “Jaanisaar” is touted to be a family entertainer.

Imran, who made his Bollywood debut with 2014 film “Creature 3D”, will be seen playing the role of Ameer in the film.

“My role is of a prince. He basically belongs to India but has been brought up in Britain. He is sent back to Lucknow again after becoming a proper British man. Then he falls in love with this girl (Noor played by Pernia), who is a courtesan,” the 32-year-old said.

Belonging to an Urdu speaking family, the dialect was not a problem for Imran in the film.

“It was not much difficult to step into my character because I belong to an Urdu speaking family. My father belongs to Uttar Pradesh. He migrated to Pakistan after partition. I have a very strong connection with Urdu and this area,” he said.

Pernia, who is also a classical dancer, too expressed her excitement working with the director.

“I started dancing from the age of four. I’m a trained Kuchipudi and Kathak dancer. I was too excited to be a part of ‘Jaanisaar’. I was a little concerned on the director’s behalf as I didn’t want to disappoint him. But he helped me a lot,” she said.

Besides Imran and Pernia, “Jaanisaar” also stars Dalip Tahil and Abid Yunus Khan. A release date is yet to be finalised for the film.

Short films are stepping stone for any filmmaker: Vikas Bahl

Vikas Bahl of “Queen” fame is happy that the short film format is finding a window in theatres, and he hopes the forthcoming “Chaar Cutting”, an anthology of four short movies which is releasing on Friday, opens up the market further.

“Short films are a stepping stone for any filmmaker in his or her journey. It's great to see that some of them are reaching theatres so that audiences can watch them. I hope ‘Chaar Cutting’ does well to open the category. I wish the guys very well,” Bahl said,

“Chaar Cutting” comprises of handpicked films put together in a way that captures a wide array of human emotion and genres including comedy, satire, romance and thriller.

It has “Skin Deep”, written by Vikramaditya Motwane of “Lootera” and “Udaan” fame and directed by his assistant Hardik Mehta; “Blouse”, directed by Vijayeta Kumar; “Manila Running”, directed by Anuj Gulati; and “Bawdi”, directed by Vivek Soni.

Talking about two of the films, Bahl said: “While ‘Skin Deep’ is a complex story about a couple, ‘Blouse’ is a simple tale of getting a gift for the spouse. I am sure the
audiences will like them too.”

Starring Aditi Vasudev and Naveen Kasturia of “Sulemani Keeda” fame, "Skin Deep" is a quirky short film, while “Blouse” revolves around Shyam getting the perfect blouse stitched for his beloved wife Roopa from the famous Babu tailor.

“Manila running” will see the central character Jacques caught in a quagmire of predicament in Philippines where he has landed to get himself an operation that he is too shy to talk about; and "Bawdi", based on drought-hit village, explores the plight of the water-starved villagers made worse by the arrival of a cola plant.

The film will be releasing in Mumbai, Pune, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Ahemdabad through PVR Director's Rare.

0

Their first outing together - “The Lunchbox” - exuded a new fragrance of cinema that Indian and international audiences equally seemed to enjoy. Now, director Ritesh Batra says he wants to again team up with actor Irrfan Khan to recreate magic on the silver screen.

“I would love to work with Irrfan again. I am always looking for an excuse to work with him again,” Batra told IANS over phone from Mumbai before flying off to Britain for his foreign project.

The 2013 film presented a unique love story between a lovelorn wife and a lonely man - played by Nimrat Kaur and Irrfan, ignited due to a mistaken delivery by Mumbai's dabbawallas.

Love blossoms between the two after exchanging letters with food becoming the bridge between them.

The movie, produced by multiple names, has done its round of international film festivals, including those in Cannes, Zurich, London and Toronto.

The film made India proud after earning a nomination at British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards in the Film Not in the English Language category. However, it lost to Polish drama "Ida".

After finding fame across the globe thanks to his debut movie, Batra has landed up a chance to direct a movie adaptation of Julian Barnes' novel "The Sense of an Ending", featuring Oscar-winning actor Jim Broadbent.

Batra notes that the casting process for the film is still on, but getting Irrfan on board for the project seems highly unlikely.

“The novel is very British with British characters,” he said.

However, the director mentioned that he will find a way to work with Irrfan again.

“If not this one, then may be the next one,” he said when asked about casting Irrfan for the British film.

'The Spectacular Jihad...' inspired by 9/11 attacks

0
0

Film director Raghav Murali's forthcoming film "The Spectacular Jihad of Taz Rahim" has drawn its inspiration from the 9/11 attacks.

The film tells the story of Taz (Rahsaan), a rapper who is blackmailed to become an undercover agent by the New York Police Department (NYPD). It is loosely inspired by real-life incidents of NYPD, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Central Intelligence Agency's use of Muslim informants.

"When we first began to work on the film, our research was really shocking yet intriguing. As we delved further we learnt so much of this practice of hiring of Muslim informants, especially given the fact that so much was said of discrimination against people of Muslim origin people after these attacks," Murali said in a statement.

"The police would hire such men and use them to scheme better information. The movie tries to capture this reality with a touch of humour and touches upon this very interesting side to a story said in so many other ways," added the director.

The forthcoming unconventional Indo-American film features Monica Dogra and Rahsaan Islam. "The Spectacular Jihad of Taz Rahim" was premiered in Los Angeles on April 15 and is slated to hit the Indian screens on June 26.

'Inside Out' to release in India on June 26

0

Disney-Pixar's animation venture "Inside Out", which received a standing ovation at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival, will hit the screens in India on June 26.

In "Inside Out", Oscar-winning director Pete Docter will take viewers to the most extraordinary location of all -- inside the mind.

The film had a Cannes premiere earlier this month, and it received a warm response.

It traces the growing up of Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Riley is guided by her emotions -- Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith).

Riley is voiced by Kaitlyn Dias, and providing the voices of Mom and Dad are Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan.

"The emotions are kind of like the voices in our heads," Docter said in a statement.

"When we were just getting started on this film, we looked around at our kids, friends, co-workers... and we realised that everybody has a default temperament. We all go through periods of being happy or sad, but certain people are just happy or angry or what have you. Riley is one of those happy kids," he added.

Indian stories need global exposure: 'Lunchbox' director Ritesh Batra

0
0

He took the taste and flavours of Mumbai's dabbawallas on a global trail with his first feature film, "The Lunchbox", which managed the rare feat of appealing to international critics and Indian audiences alike. Ritesh Batra - the man behind the film - says he is on a mission to take Indian stories to the world by making his films a window to India and its culture.

The worldwide success of "The Lunchbox" has landed Batra an opportunity to direct a British film based on Julian Barnes' novel "The Sense of an Ending", featuring Oscar-winning actor Jim Broadbent. Just before leaving for Britain, Batra spoke about the need of telling local Indian stories with a global appeal and how he will continue to be a flag bearer for the same.

"It is important for me to tell Indian stories, which are universal at heart, to the world. Take America, for example. When you go there, you don't feel that you are in a foreign country and that is due to the influx of American content in Hollywood's films and TV shows.

"People should feel that they have already been to India through our stories. And that is really what I like to do," Batra told IANS in a candid tete-a-tete over the phone from Mumbai.

The director feels the film fraternity must work in unity to take audiences across the world on an Indian voyage through the silver screen.

"I think we need to keep doing that as a community. I want to keep on doing that. It is important for all of us".

He did it himself with "The Lunchbox" by weaving a love story of a lovelorn wife and a lonely man, played by Nimrat Kaur and Irrfan Khan, through a mistaken delivery of a dabba (lunchbox).

The 2013 film went globetrotting and was lauded at several international film extravaganzas in Cannes, Zurich, London and Toronto. It was also nominated in the Film Not in the English Language category of the prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards.

Batra says the film's success came as a "gift" to him, and even though he is now out to make a British film, the core of his filmmaking will be "to tell Indian stories to the world".

He said: "It is something I always wanted to do and will continue to do so."

This attempt has also painted a success story for filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan, whose indie project "Masaan", centred on a group of people in Varanasi, won the International Federation of Film Critics (Fipresci) award at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival this year.

Batra, who has also directed short films like "Gareeb Nawaz's Taxi" and "The Masterchef", says it's a good time for independent cinema, but points out that there is need to build audience for such projects in India.

"When films like 'Court' or 'Masaan' succeed, I get thrilled because I think that one person's success is everybody's success. If an independent movie succeeds, it makes my life easier," he said, and added that "we have to keep building an audience for movies that matter to us within India as well".

Batra is also in favour of entertaining, simple and powerful stories like "Piku" and "Tanu Weds Manu Returns", which are a sign of a wave of change in Bollywood. He says the numbers garnered by such movies talk for themselves and indicate what the audience is looking for.

On the home turf, Batra is in the process of working on a script called "Photograph", which will be based in Mumbai and revolves around lust.

I like donning different hats of creativity: Aki Narula

0
0

A fashion designer, a costume designer and a stylist to the cinestars, Aki Narula, known for promoting mostly street style, says he enjoys wearing all hats and likes to take challenges when it comes to creativity.

“I'm one of those people who likes to do different things. I like being challenged creatively. I am doing a lot of films right now and styling. You will see something from my label by next year for sure. I like donning different hats of creativity and it’s fun,” Narula, who was in the capital for the launch of ‘Disney by Anouk’ collection, told IANS.

Having worked as a costume designer for films like “Bunty Aur Babli” and “Kill Dil”, he is now looking forward to the release of Imtiaz Ali’s next titled “Tamasha”.

“I’ve just completed ‘Tamasha’. All of last year went in ‘Tamasha’ and it is looking fantastic. I can talk about it from September onwards due to its November end release. You will see the mad Aki touch... You will see a lot of ‘tamasha’ from both (he and Ali) of us,” said Narula, who has worked with Ali in films like “Rockstar” and “Highway”.

That’s not all! He will be “announcing something by July” too. But before that, he is looking forward to a holiday and to do what he loves - travel.

“I will take a month off. I haven’t taken a break since February last year... that includes Christmas and New Year. I am looking forward to a one-month summer vacation. I am just going to travel alone in Europe.

“I haven’t picked a destination. I will start from France and then let’s see where it takes me. There will be lot of travelling alone this time, a lot of thinking ...giving time to myself and then I will come back fresh by end of June to start a new movie project in July,” he said.

The designer, who often gets inspired by street fashion, says he likes how people of northeast India dress up.

“As far as India is concerned, for me it’s the northeast (most stylist)...very cool. I am very partial towards Shillong (Meghalaya). There is lot of fun and personality that comes out the way kids dress up and internationally. I was in Tokyo recently and there is nothing to beat Tokyo.

“It’s absolutely insane. It’s quirky, very fresh and there is a bit of personality in whatever everyone wears. It’s not just about brands. It’s about how people style themselves,” he said.

After styling for stars like Ranbir Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, Narula wants to design for children.

“I would love to do a full-on kids films because the way children react to colour, nobody does. It’s innocent, vulnerable and fresh,” he said.

He also promises to be back on the ramp as a designer.

“Fashion weeks excite me. I started my career with fashion and 2000 was my first time in a fashion week. I’ve taken a break from that because movies consume a lot of time and also travelling.

“I don’t think I quit fashion or the industry, I still style for Lakme India Fashion Week. I am more behind the scene, but you will see me right up there very soon,” he said.
