Fasting Telugu actor shifted to hospital

Police in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur town forcibly shifted Telugu actor Sivaji to hospital on Wednesday as his condition deteriorated on the fourth day of his indefinite hunger strike to demand special category status to the state.

Police cracked down on his hunger strike camp after a team of doctors advised authorities to shift him to hospital in view of his deteriorating condition.

The actor's supporters resisted police attempts but the latter managed to shift him to an ambulance, which carried him to the hospital.

Earlier, tension prevailed at the hunger strike camp as Sivaji's fans staged road blockade to protest indifferent attitude of both the state and the central governments towards his demand.

Sivaji, who is also a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), went on hunger strike on May 3, accusing the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre of going back on its promise to grant special category status to the state.

He had vowed to continue the fast till the Centre fulfills its promise. He also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to honour his word on special category status.

The state was promised the special status by the central government at the time of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh last year to carve out separate Telangana state. The BJP during the poll campaign had promised to honour the commitment.

Leaders of various organisations had called on Sivaji during last four days to declare their support. Main opposition YSR Congress Party had also backed his protest.

Jewellery should complement the person you are: Gul Panag

Jewellery should not dominate the persona of a human being, but should rather play a "complementary" role in life, according to actress Gul Panag.

"Jewellery should play a complementary role in one's life rather than the dominating one," the 36-year-old actress, who was here on Wednesday to promote jewellery brand Zoya and its series 'The Spirit of the Zoya Woman', told IANS.

"It should complement the person you are. If I see the jewellery of a person before him then that jewellery is not doing anything great for that person.

"It's great for Zoya that people might see the jewellery first, but if I had to give a gift to somebody, I would pick something that would complement the person you are, that doesn't take anything away from you but adds to you," she said.

Gul, who donned a casual look for the event with less gems on her body apart from string earrings, earlier went on an adventurous off-road trip with her friend and women rights lawyer Swaty Malik.

Their trip is currently being aired as a documentary titled "Off Road with Gul Panag" on Discovery Channel.

Sharing her experience on the trip, Gul said: "Travelling and exploring has become a part of my life. Travel helps us absorb the act of living. If you are a working woman, you have so much to do that you don’t have a minute for yourself.

"It doesn't mean you are being reckless, it just means you are taking calculated risks and let things run their course. I have always lived my life on my own terms, a lot of people have always asked me, why don't you do things like xyz? But I want to do what suits me best."

Crafted with intricacies, Zoya products are made from well researched designing techniques adapted from places like Spain, Greece and India's Varanasi.

"Jewellery is all about detailing, intricacy and craft. We travelled to many places to know different crafts of jewellery. In Zoya, we don't look out for any stereotypical style. We like to be experimental," Sangeeta Dewan, who designs jewellery for Zoya, told IANS.

"When we were conceptualising for Zoya, we actually were thinking who will buy our product. We already have a big giant like Tanishq. But Zoya products are exclusive, premium and for a very discerning person," she added.

The price range for Zoya products stars at Rs.1 lakh.

Actor Ram Kapoor, who has maintained a balance between TV and films, says he's at a position now where he is getting "good money" from both the mediums.

While many actors who have gone from the small to the big screen are of the opinion that TV pays well than films, Ram told IANS: "I am lucky enough to have reached a stage where now I am getting very good money for both TV and films. But, I also understand what other TV stars are saying, because for the first five years that was the case for me as well."

The actor, who will soon be seen in "Kuch Kuch Locha Hai", which releases on Friday, also believes he has been able to maintain variety in his work.

'Dagudumoota...' a family drama through the eyes of a rooster

0

Filmmaker R.K. Malineni says forthcoming Telugu movie "Dagudumoota Dandakor" is an out-and-out family drama that will unfold through the eyes of a rooster that plays an important character in the movie.

The film, which releases in cinemas on Saturday, is the Telugu remake of Tamil film "Saivam".

"The story explores the bond between the members of a family through the eyes of a rooster. We retained the core characters from the original. The film will also predominantly revolve around the bond between a rooster and a young girl and her grandfather," Malineni told IANS.

In "Saivam", which was directed by A.L. Vijay, the plot touched on the vegetarianism angle, which Malineni says they've avoided in the Telugu version.

"We've tried to focus on the attachment within the members of a family. If people from a family are coming together for a reunion after a few years, the attachment they share is not quite strong," he said.

"Dagudumoota..." features Rajendra Prasad as the grandfather and child actor Sara Arjun as the granddaughter.

Sara was also part of the original version, in which veteran actor Nasser played the grandfather's role.

"Nasser was extremely good in the titular character in 'Saivam', but for the remake, we wanted someone with an image. Had it been a formulaic film with a hero and heroine, we could've retained Nasser. But here's a film that needed to ride on the shoulder of an actor with some image, hence we chose Rajendra Prasad," he said.

"What really worked in the favour of our film is the fact that the bond between the grandfather and his granddaughter worked much better in the Telugu version," said Malineni, and added that the biggest challenge was to maintain the emotional pulse of the original in the remake.

"I was initially worried if I'd be able to do justice to the film but with that fear, we worked hard to retain the soul of the original and yet managed to bring some nativity in our film," he added.

According to Malineni, the bond between the little girl and the rooster will serve as one of the pillars of the movie, which he assures will entertain and also tug at heartstrings at regular intervals.

"The mood of our film will be like the celebration of a festival. It has all the emotions that you can relate with six tastes or flavours in Ugadi chutney," he said.

The film is jointly produced by "Gabbar Is Back" director Krish and Ramoji Rao.

"It was through filmmaker Krish; I got an opportunity to direct this project. I come from television background and had worked with him on a popular daily soap. He liked my work and wished to work with me. It was then we watched 'Saivam', and he immediately decided to remake it," he added.

What's Preity Zinta's cardio for night?

Actress Preity Zinta says she loves dancing. So, she doesn't mind carrying a pair of sneakers and lets her hair down wherever she is.

“I’ve always loved dancing. Sometimes, I go to club... not very recent. I always take a pair of sneakers with me. It doesn’t matter what I’m wearing. I think I’ve reached a point in my life where I don't have to prove to anybody that ‘Oh I’m hot’, ‘I’m amazing’, ‘Look at my shoes’.

“It’s about my personal comfort. I wear sneakers and dance and then I joke and say ‘This is my cardio for the night’,” Preity, who has been carrying her sneakers around since the past 10 to 15 years, told IANS.

The actress, currently seen judging reality TV show “Nach Baliye 7”, considers dance as a stress-buster.

“I also love to dance because, for me, it is a form of meditation and relaxation. It's just you and the music. Dance becomes a little difficult when someone choreographs and tells you to follow his or her moves. One, two, three, four... then you are learning that.

“Otherwise, if you are just kind of dancing, I love that. I love freestyle," she added.

Preity is currently co-judging the celebrity dance show with author Chetan Bhagat and choreographer Marzi Pestonji.

Odiya cinema making remakes of South Indian films: Sabyasachi Mohapatra

0
0

National Award-winning director Sabyasachi Mohapatra feels the regional aspect of the Indian entertainment industry is losing its sheen for want of support from the government. As a result, he says, regional filmmakers, like from Odisha, are treading the remake path.

Mohapatra received the National Film Award from President Pranab Mukherjee for "Aadim Vichar", in the Best Odiya Film category at the 62nd National Film Awards ceremony held in New Delhi on Sunday.

"Since there is a lack of government patronage, Odiya cinema is fast losing its sheen and producers are preferring to do Odiya remake of South Indian movies." Mohapatra told IANS in an interview.

"Aadim Vichar" (Ancient Justice) was directed by the 64-year-old and produced by his family members.

The last time an Odiya film got a National Award was in 2006 for "Puja Paine Phulatie" (A flower for a ritual), directed by Gadadhar Puty.

"Aadim Vichar" is based on Odisha's Kondh tribe and portrays the ancient justice system that still thrives in the community.

"We have made more Odiya films in recent years compared to what we used to produce a decade ago. Last year, 26 Odiya films were released, but unfortunately, most of them were remakes of Telugu and Tamil movies," Mohapatra said.

"The state is blessed with immense talent but the re-make route is being preferred because there isn't adequate support from the state authorities," he added.

"Other states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka have been providing huge subsidies and incentives to their filmmakers whereas in our state we get only a small amount of subsidy," he said.

Born at Lehedi village in Subarnapur district, Mohapatra has worked in more than 20 films and attributes his success in the industry to his hard work and family support.

"From my own experience, I know how difficult it is. I could thrive in adverse situations only because of the support of my parents, brothers, sisters, children and wife," said Mohapatra, who has been associated with films since 1976.

Mohapatra, who has worked as an associate director along with reputed helmsmen in Mumbai, as also in Odisha and West Bengal, said one not only needs adequate finance, but the industry also has to work towards producing quality cinema.

The director said that "Aadim Vichar" is based on a short story written by his father.

Mohapatra's "Sala Budha" (Stupid Old Man), another feature film in the Sambalpuri Koshali language, had been selected for the 44th International Film Festival of India in 2013.

"Sala Budha" was officially selected for the Indian Panaroma section. It has also won the best feature film award at the Jakarta International Film Festival.

The other films directed by Mohapatra that were widely appreciated include Odiya feature film "Sabu Mayare Baya" (Mad in Illusion) released in 1986 and "Bhukha" (hunger), the first film in Sambalpuri dialect released in 1989.

"Bhukha" has won critical acclaim and bagged the Special Jury Award in the Gijjon International Film Festival, Spain. The film was also selected for the competitive section in the Aurillac Film Festival, France, along with many Indian awards.

Mohapatra said he is working now on "Kondh Budha", a sequel to "Sala Budha".

Filmmaker Faisal Saif, who was all set to release his film "Main Hoon (Part-Time) Killer" on May 15, has now decided to push its release date by a week to show support for Salman Khan, who has been convicted in a hit-and-run case.

The Bombay High Court will on Friday hear Salman's bail plea. He was found guilty and sentenced to five years in imprisonment on Wednesday by Additonal Sessions Judge D.W. Deshpande, in the September 2002 accident case in Bandra which left one person killed and four other pavement dwellers injured.

"This is a very shocking as well as a very emotional period for Salman Khan, his family, and also entire Bollywood. Yes, it is our decision to push our film's release a week further. I think not only me but the whole Bollywood should take a stand and show our support to Salman Khan and his family," Faisal Saif told IANS.

"This is the time to get united and show the world that we are Bollywood. I am a small man and this is what I could do for the superstar with a golden heart," ha added.

Earlier, "Main Hoon (Part-Time) Killer" was supposed to clash with Anurag Kashyap's much-anticipated "Bombay Velvet". Now, it will release with "Tanu Weds Manu Returns".
