With 45 awards in Feature Film category and a total of 21 awards in the Non-Feature film category, the award ceremony was attended by talents from Bollywood along with regional film industries Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Assamese.

It also saw performances by 62nd National Film Award winners - Sukhwinder Singh, who won Best Male Playback Singer for the song "Bismil" from “Haider”, and Uttara Unnikrishanan, who bagged the Best Playback Female Singer for the song "Azhagu" from Tamil movie "Saivam”.

The president too gave "special congratulations" to the ailing 77-year-old actor.

"My special congratulation is to Shri Shashi Kapoor, who has been honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year. His contribution to cinema has been tremendous. He is a true living legend. He began his career as a child artist in the films 'Aag' and 'Awara', and then we saw him as a flamboyant hero in many blockbuster films.

"He made his mark not only as an actor, but also as a producer and remarkable contribution to the Indian cinema, where he balanced his work in theatre and cinema. Shri Sashi Kapoor is the third person to win the Dadasaheb Phalke award in his family -- the other two being Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor. I wish him a long and healthy life," he said.

Dressed in a floor sweeping gown, Kangana Ranaut received the Best Actress honour from the president. The Best Actor award was picked up by Vijay for his "subtle and non-stereotypical playing of a woman trapped in a man's body", in Kannada film "Nanu Avanalla Avalu".

In the Best Children's Film, there was a tie between Marathi entertainer "Elizabeth Ekadashi" and Tamil movie "Kaakkaa Muttai", for which actor Dhanush accepted the award.

President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday said that the future of Indian cinema is in adapting “digital ecosystem” driven by the youth of the country. He also noted that it is time to take regional cinema onto a global platform.

"Cinema is country's soft power. It holds international ties and navigates global horizons with it. With world’s youngest democracy and growing smartphone market, our country will soon embrace a complete digital ecosystem, which would help us connect to a larger number of consenting geographical and cultural radius,” Mukherjee said at the 62nd National Film Awards ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan here.

Congratulating the recipients of the award, Mukherjee emphasised on the need to promote regional cinema.

"Mainstream Hindi cinema is recognised internationally, we should focus to project our regional cinema now, highlight that the content is equally impressive and deserve global attention,” he said.

Writer-director Chaitanya Tamhane and singer Uttara Unnikrishanan, who received the National Film Award in the Best Feature Film category for movie “Court” and Best Playback Female Singer award for the song "Azhagu" from Tamil movie "Saivam” respectively, got a special mention by the president.

"The winner of Best Feature Film, Chaitanya Tamhane is 27 years old and his film ‘Court’ has created voice in international film festivals. I’m also delighted for Uttara Unnikrishanan, who is 10 years old. The creativity amongst our youth is a promise for the future. It reassures us that we will continue to produce not just in number, but in the quality as well,” Mukherjee said.

He also appreciated the digitisation of film screens, saying they "have allowed distributors to release films simultaneously across multiple screens” which has turned out to be a profitable setting.

“We need to reinforce this trend by building more screens,” he said.

The president, who looked elegant in a black bandhgala suit, also pointed out the role of social media in marketing of a film.

“Promotion and marketing of films have now taken on a new avatar with substantial marketing happening on social media - news of a good film now spreads quicker on Twitter than by word of mouth,” he said.

On Sunday, Bravo sang and danced to the single, which also features Indian origin Trinidad singer Nisha B.

Dressed in a golden sherwani, Bravo launched the single in the presence of Chennai Super Kings teammates and some friends from Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"‘Chalo Chalo’ is a mixed genre song featuring Caribbean music with western and Indian influences," Bravo said.

The song, he said, was conceived when he was made to sit out of the West Indian World Cup team.

“I was disappointed and bored for about two months. I wanted to divert my concentration on something else and that’s when I decided to work on this track,” he added.

“Chalo Chalo” is Bravo’s seventh single.

Actor Charandeep, who recently wrapped up working in upcoming Tamil fantasy-drama "Puli" with superstar Vijay, says he found him to be extremely humble on and off the sets and always willing to help his co-stars.

"This is the second time I've worked with him after 'Jilla'. Although I play a small role in this film, he treated me equally with everybody. Since I don't know Tamil, I'd write down my dialogues in English and he'd help me to mouth them perfectly," Charandeep told IANS.

"He's so humble that one never feels like working with a superstar. He encouraged me so much and told me that I should concentrate on working Tamil industry more as there's a dearth of local villains," he said.

In "Puli", which also features Shruti Haasan, Hansika Motwani and Sridevi in important roles, Charan shared screen space with Vijay and Shruti.

Talking about the movie, he said: "It'll be a visual treat. The makers have spent lavishly on the sets and the production value is top notch."

While remaining tight-lipped about his character, Charandeep said the audience will have Vijay in never seen before avtaar.

"The movie will be totally different from what Vijay sir has done in his career. It will be as commercial as any of his films, but at the same time it will stand out as an experimental project," he added.

Haven't released 150 songs as business models changed: Atif

0

Popular Pakistani musician Atif Aslam hasn't released any album since "Meri Kahani" (2008) despite having a "library of 150 songs". The "Tere bin" crooner says the trend has now shifted from albums to singles and music lovers prefer downloading from online platforms to purchasing physical copies from brick-and-mortar stores.

"All these years... I've composed my music as well. I have a complete library... a library of 150 songs at the moment. I haven't released them because the business model has completely changed," Atif, who made his Bollywood singing debut with "Woh lamhe" in the 2005 film "Zeher", told IANS.

"I'm again trying to do independent music now. I'm working on a couple of songs. I will release them by the end of this year. They are not going to be an album... just singles. That's the trend now," added the Lahore-based star, who was in India for the Royal Stag MTV Bollyland multi-city concerts.

Consisting of youth anthems like "Aadat" and "Bheegi yaadein", "Jal Pari" released in Pakistan in 2004. Two years later, his "Doorie" album hit the stores in India too and after "Meri Kahani", his fans -- whom he fondly calls 'aadeez'-- have been waiting patiently for the rocker to unveil his new collection of self-composed tracks.

"You don't want to waste your effort. You have to follow certain rules and regulations and business model. You don't run them. As far as creativity is concerned, of course, I can have power... but I can't run the whole business," said the former Indian label Tips Music artist.

"Not too many people buy CDs now. They are just into downloading and they need a gap of about a month or so for the next song because they get tired of the album.

"They (listeners) don't want to hear the same sort of music and there is so much music happening at the moment... so, they don't have time," added the 32-year-old, who isn't "in favour of remixes" and likes "organic music".

While his fans have to wait for his original work till the year-end, a new single titled "Zindagi aaraha hoon main", featuring Bollywood's budding actor Tiger Shroff, will be launched soon.

Talking about the new track, Atif said: "It's not a preachy song. It's just about how you enjoy your life... whatever you are doing, just enjoy yourself."

Since his arrival on the music scene in 2004, he has also delivered many heart-touching Bollywood songs like "Jeena jeena" and "Pehli nazar mein", and has featured in most of the videos too.

Has he -- with droopy eyes and an infectious smile -- ever thought of acting in Bollywood?

"I might act in a Bollywood film. I'm listening to quite a few scripts now, but nothing has intrigued me so far. Let's see... I probably could do anything other than chocolate boy kind of roles," said Atif, who acted in Pakistani drama movie "Bol" (2011).

Launched in Bollywood by Mahesh Bhatt, the singer also hopes to work with the renowned Indian filmmaker and his team again after "Zeher" and "Kalyug" (2005).

"I love the Bhatt company. I've always thanked them for introducing me to India and they've been very kind," said the musician, whose elder brother Shahbaz Aslam often designs for the star.

Also known for sporting chic clothes, Atif gives credit to Shahbaz for his sartorial taste. And like him, the younger brother wants Shahbaz to showcase his talent in India.

"If there is a demand for it (Shahbaz's work), I would love to help him in opening a store in India," said Atif.

Hope 'Kuch Kuch Locha Hai' and 'Piku' are equally successful: Ram Kapoor

Deepika Padukone starrer "Piku" and Sunny Leone starrer "Kuch Kuch Locha Hai" are set to clash at the box office this Friday. However, Ram Kapoor who plays the lead role in the Sunny Leone starrer, is unfazed about such comparison and says both the films have their own target audiences.

He hopes people would like both the films.

"I don't think so there is any competition between both the films - "Piku" and "Kuch Kuch Locha Hai" - as both of these have different target audiences. So neither of these two will affect each other's business. Both the films are very different and have different target groups," the actor said here in an interview.

While "Kuch Kuch Locha Hai" is about a 45-year-old married man who witnesses turmoil in his life after he gets a chance to meet a Bollywood star (played by Sunny Leone in the film), whom he has always fantasised about, "Piku", directed by Shoojit Sircar, is a comedy-drama and explores a daughter-father relationship. Besides Deepika, it also features megastar Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan.

Further, he wishes all success to the Deepika and Big B starrer and can't wait to watch the film when it releases.

"I would like to wish "Piku" all the best and want it to become successful and this is what I expect for our own film as well because at the end of the day every film's success is better for the film industry," Ram Kapoor said.

"I am a big fan of Bachchan sahab (Amitabh Bachchan) Deepika Padukone and Irrfan so I will definitely watch "Piku"," he added.
