Anderson offers to pay for faux tuskers for Thissur Pooram

Hollywood actress Pamela Anderson has extended her support to pay for 30 life-sized bamboo and papier-mache elephants to replace live pachiderms at this year's Thrissur Pooram festival - billed as the 'mother of all festivals' in Kerala.

Anderson penned a letter to Kerala's chief minister, making her offer, after the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) advised Kerala officials to leave live elephants out of the upcoming Thrissur Pooram parade because they are not registered with the AWBI as required by law.

Anderson is the long-time patron of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India.

The 47-year-old "Baywatch" beauty has said she would contribute the cost of providing 30 life-sized, realistic and portable tuskers to replace live elephants whose use is coming under increasing scrutiny because of changing public opinion.

"I'm sure you know that both Indian and international public opinion is turning solidly against the use of elephants in captivity. I'd like to offer my support for what is a wonderful opportunity to make a stunning, humane spectacle that everyone would talk about and that would garner international praise," Anderson wrote to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in a letter, a copy of which is with IANS.

If Anderson's offer is accepted, this year's Thrissur Pooram would be the third such progressive parade ever held in India.

The first two were held by the Confederation of Tamilnadu Malayalee Associations, which used a stunning array of faux elephants during Onam festivals to the delight of audiences.

Anderson saw the faux elephants and said she was "blown away".

A remake with a twist, a new video of popular Bollywood track "Kal ho naa ho", featuring German Ambassador Michael Steiner, his wife Eliese and former external affairs minister Salman Khurshid has gone viral online, garnering over 600,000 views within three days of going live on Youtube.

Now a behind-the-scenes footage is to be shared soon.

"Kal ho naa ho" is a song which continues to touch listeners even after over a decade since its release. But memories of the song and the movie are at once revisited upon watching "Lebe jetzt!" - which means "Kal ho na ho" in German - as the trio of Steiner, Eliese and Khurshid enact some key moments from the Karan Johar-directorial.

Steiner fills in for cine star Shah Rukh Khan, lipsyncing the lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar, Eliese smiles and dances away a la Preity Zinta, and Khurshid steps into the shoes of Saif Ali Khan.

It puts a smile on the viewers' face.

The endeavour to pay tribute to the film, its actors and its team also earned a thumbs up from superstar Shah Rukh Khan and "Kal Ho Naa Ho" director Karan Johar.

On Twitter, Karan shared: “With love from Germany!!! @iamsrk you have to see this!!! https://youtu.be/0XK3BVXbVsU #KalHoNaaHo #eternalsong.”

SRK also hailed it, saying: “@karanjohar @iamsrk you have to see this!!! https://youtube/0XK3BVXbVsU #KalHoNaaHo #eternalsong” Drat! They remade it already! Awesome job. (sic)."

Owing to the growing popularity of the video on the online medium and the "mind-boggling reactions from all over", a 'Making Of' of the video will be released, the German embassy announced in a statement.

The song itself was launched on April 24 by Steiner along with Khurshid in the presence of Saif, his mother Sharmila Tagore and writer Akhtar at an event at the German embassy here.

The original video for the song was shot in the US, wherein western outfits were donned by the actors. But the remake was shot in the capital featuring the German ambassador as Shah Rukh and his wife as Preity Zinta in ethnic Indian wear.

The "Kal ho naa ho" sung by renowned singer Sonu Nigam and composed by Bollywood's hit composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy was originally shot in US.

Actor-comedian Vir Das got “upset” when his standup comedy show here was disrupted by police after an unknown person filed a complaint against him as he attempted to spoof former president of India, APJ Abdul Kalam. He has reacted to the incident via an open letter.

Vir was performing his new sketch called “UnbelievabLISH" as part of his Unbelievable Tour at the Siri Fort Auditorium on April 25, when he was interrupted midway by a man who asked him to stop talking about Kalam.

The 35-year-old's open letter, posted on Sunday on his official Facebook page, reads:
"Last Night, while I was on stage at the ?#?UnbelievableTour? The Police showed up and what happened was upsetting and wrong.

“My new show UnbelievabLISH is a show about truth & outrageous fiction. In one bit, I tell a story about how I performed for the man I consider to be India’s coolest president ever Dr. Abdul Kalam. My tribute, goes into an outrageous sketch about how Kalam hosts MTV cribs, has swag & defends himself against a fictitious lesbian assault.

“We are now at interval in Siri Fort, and an intellectual gentleman has walked into my green room and said 'Excuse me….you CANNOT talk about Kalam'... Second half of my show begins and somewhere 20 mins into it, policemen have begun showing up to Siri Fort.

“I am on stage and I can see policemen backstage, in the control room, and with my crew. My crew is being questioned by Police as the show is going on, they are all taken away from their event duties.”

Vir added the police informed him that his comedy footage would be examined and the complaint would have to be addressed.

Though Vir was asked by his crew to leave the venue, he refused to do so.

“I’ve done nothing wrong, let me talk to the police, it will be fine. Eventually the cops leave saying that the complaint will have to be addressed, they will be reviewing my comedy footage, and I’m preparing myself for that process,” he wrote.

In another post, Vir thanked his fans for their support and wrote: “I've got 14 cities to go, I'm aware of what my tickets cost, how many other options the audience have, what they gave up over the weekend or coming weekends to come see this show. And I always always always want to make sure they feel like this was the right choice.”

She went to Kathmandu to launch her special calendar, but ended up facing the horror of a 7.9-magnitude earthquake, that devastated Nepal on Saturday. Model Pooja Missra is heaving a sigh of relief and is grateful to God that she's back safe, sound and alive.

The model, whose antics on reality show "Bigg Boss 5" made her a popular name, was heading to the holy Pashupatinath temple when the tremors shook the Himalayan nation.

“I was going to the Pashupatinath temple. I was sitting in the car when the earthquake took place. I was startled at first, but then I went out on the road and stood there,” Pooja told IANS.

Like the thousands of victims who witnessed the dust, debris and dead bodies left behind by the massive quake and its multiple aftershocks, Pooja was taken aback by the trail of destruction left behind by the temblor.

She says there was no electricity, mobile network or food. But she managed her hands on some salad, fruits and tea in a hotel where she took shelter.

At the hotel Pooja also managed to get access to wifi facility, thanks to which she could inform her family about her well-being. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the wifi also went dead.

On her way to the Tribhuvan International Airport, Pooja says she saw how old Kathmandu was reduced to rubble, and in new Kathmandu area, she spotted the damage the quake had inflicted on the buildings.

The sight at the airport was something she wasn't prepared to see.

“There were tourists from all over the world...it was like mayhem. It looked like a refugee camp as people sat outside and demanded to be sent back,” said the model-actress, who lost her mobile phone, cheque book, passport, credit and debit cards.

Pooja says she came back to Delhi on an "evacuation flight", and she is grateful to God she is alive. Pooja has especially thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his effort to create relief via Operation Maitri.

"My heart goes out to the people in Nepal...I am grateful that I am alive. Thank you to Narendra Modi for his tremendous effort to create relief in Nepal by sending Indian Air Force evacuation flights and food supplies."

The Indian Air Force has fetched 1,935 Indian back from Kathmandu to New Delhi since late Saturday.

Filmmaker S.D. Vijay Milton still can't fathom news about the earthquake in Nepal because not long ago he with his team shot for over two weeks for upcoming Tamil thriller "10 Enradhukulla".

"I'm shaken from the inside. Sometimes you create a bond with a place and that happened in my case with Nepal. We shot for over two weeks in Bhaktapur, and all I can recall besides the pleasant shooting experience is the hospitality of the Nepalese," Milton told IANS.

"Despite not knowing the local language, we made so many good friends. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. The locals are extremely friendly and they helped us in every way to complete shoot smoothly," he added.

The toll from the devastating earthquake in Nepal has climbed to over 3000.

Milton said they couldn't contact with anybody since the tragedy.

"Some of us made friends and even exchanged numbers. We've been trying to reach them, but to no avail. We are devastated and are mourning the loss of our friends. Forget Nepal, I think, no place in this world deserves this kind of tragedy," he added.

'Dongata' will unleash the best in Lakshmi Manchu: Director

0
0

Debutant director Vamsi Krishna says forthcoming Telugu crime-comedy "Dongata" will unleash the best in its lead heroine Lakshmi Manchu, who has also produced the movie.

Coincidentally, Lakshmi plays an actress in the movie, which releases on Friday.

"All the characters Lakshmi has played before have not portrayed her real self. My film will unleash the best in her and show audiences her natural side. Since she plays an actress, she lived in the character as herself," Krishna told IANS.

"Heroines in Telugu cinema are mostly featured in bubbly roles, but Lakshmi has attempted something very few have done before. Right from the start till the end, she has carried the movie on her shoulders. I chose her mainly because she can mould herself in any character," he said.

The film is about three guys who kidnap Lakshmi and the events that follow between them.

Lakshmi and her brothers have been childhood friends with Vamsy.

"We grew up together in Chennai. After I assisted Gautham Menon for a few years in direction, I joined Lakshmi's home production and worked as an executive producer on a couple of her projects. It was during this time, I narrated her the script of 'Dongata'," he said.

Talking about the movie," Vamsy said: "It's a con-drama with a high dose of entertainment. It explores the relationship between money and humans".

One of the challenges for Vamsy was making the film on a stipulated budget without compromising on quality.

"The story is such that I had to shoot with all the actors on all days. It was extremely tough to complete the film under strict budget," said Vamsy, and added that his experience in various departments of filmmaking came in very handy.

"Right after college, I assisted editor Sreekar Prasad for a few years. Then I joined Gautham and worked with him on a few projects. Later, I ventured into film production. It's very important as a director to learn about other crafts as well," he said.

The movie also stars Adivi Sesh, Brahmanadam and Jayaprakash Reddy in important roles.
