'365 Days' not about my marriage: RGV

Maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma says the story of upcoming Telugu romantic-drama "365 Days", a peek at the story of a couple post nuptials, is not based on his own marriage.

"It's the story of most couples nowadays. It's not based on my marriage. I penned the screenplay keeping in mind the emotions of a couple by looking at marriage from very close quarters," Varma told IANS.

"I had a failed marriage. It was not because of my wonderful wife. It was because she got a bad husband," he said.

Starring Nandoo and Anaika Soti in the lead, the film is gearing up for release in May.

According to Varma, marriage will soon be an extinct concept.

"A man and a woman need each other, but they can't live together by getting married. Marriage will no longer exist and people will prefer to be friends," he added.

'Dohchay': Fails to rob hearts (IANS Telugu Movie Review)

0
0

Film: "Dohchay"; Cast: Naga Chaitanya, Kriti Sanon, Pooja Ramachandran, Posani Krishna Murali, Brahmanandam, Saptagiri and Ravi Babu; Director: Sudheer Varma; Rating: **1/2

With a title like "Dohchay", which means 'to rob', you expect a movie to do more than just entertain. Such expectations were riding high on this film right from the moment it was announced, since it was coming from the director who gave Telugu audiences a sensational movie like "Swamy Ra Ra", which was a critical and commercial hit and opened the floodgates to a genre that was considered underrated.

Half way into "Dohchay", a crime comedy that doesn't do justice to both the genres, the high expectations are reduced to half, and by the end of the movie, you wish Sudheer had smartly worked on a sequel to his first film, which by the way, someone else is making.

The movie comes with the star baggage of Chaitanya, and though Sudheer has tried his best to not let it come in the way of the story, it does, and to some extent, makes the whole effort look like it was another attempt to please a star and cash in on his popularity. Maybe Sudheer wanted to use this opportunity to springboard into the big league of successful commercial directors.

The star baggage here refers to simple things like Chaitanya's lavish bike, which he rides with the earnings as a conman, and the luxurious apartment he lives in. It also refers to the need to cast a beautiful heroine, Kriti Sanon, even if it means she has no purpose. These were the compromises Sudheer didn't have to worry about in his first movie, but here, for having chosen to work with a star, it comes neatly wrapped with the big commercial tag.

The film opens with a bank robbery. Two guys rob a bank and escape in broad daylight. They create a diversion without much hassle to confuse the police and easily get away with the loot. One of them suggests they can easily double-cross their boss and flee with the money, but the other guy feels it's too risky. As they begin to argue, the story shifts to another location and introduces us to Chandu (Chaitanya), who easily cheats a producer and walks away with a lump sum amount.

For the next 45 minutes to one hour, we follow Chandu's story and learn what motivates him to con, and how good he's at it. In "Swamy Ra Ra", actor Nikhil and his gang of friends conned and robbed people for fun. Sudheer didn't bother telling us about their past or why they con, and why should it bother anyone as long as the movie entertains?

In "Dohchay", we're explained why Chandu cons people with a sentimental flashback and there's a trace of Shankar's "Gentleman" in the story. Now, there's some morality in Chandu's actions. From his earnings as a conman, he educates his sister and hopes to free his father from prison. The film suddenly feels like a revenge drama and Chandu's every action is justified.

Minutes before the interval, there's an excellent stretch that unfolds in an apartment where the two robbers from the first scene are still shown arguing. This scene is more reminiscent of a Quentin Tarantino film, and it is even more evident from the poster of "Pulp Fiction" in the room. On the adjacent wall, there's a poster of Nagarjuna's cult film "Siva".

Sudheer likes to pay tributes to his masters, and he does that so subtly. He uses the tongue-in-cheek humour quite well, but only at instances where he was running out of ideas and didn't have a clue how to proceed forward. Posani gets a meaty role and he plays it to the T. He plays a comic villain and succeeds in generating maximum laughter, and he's aptly supported by Brahmanandam in a cameo. The last 20 minutes provide some great rib-tickling entertainment.

It's tough to shake off the "Swamy Ra Ra" hangover in "Dohchay", which unfortunately fails to rob our hearts.

Actor Aarya Babbar, who is making his acting debut on the small screen with the “Sankat Mochan Mahabali Hanuman” mythological show, says he is totally “fascinated” by his character Raavan and is doing a lot of homework to understand the “intense demon".

"I've always been fascinated by the character of Raavan. I believe he is the most colourful character ever created. Every human emotion is so well depicted in his life span,” Aarya said in a statement.

“I've read books like 'Asura' (Anand Neelakantan) and seen plays like 'Agyaat Raavan' which helped me understand what this powerful, intelligent and intense demon was going through.

“'Asura', the book, has helped me to understand what Raavan's back story was, how he became the 'Lankeshwar' he was called. It also helped me in depicting that quality in my performance,” he added.

“Sankat Mochan Mahabali Hanuman”, which will be aired on Sony Entertainment Television starting May 4, will star actor Nirbhaya Wadhwa in the titular role.

The 44-year-old, who was here for a mobile launch, denied speculation that the untitled project is based on William Shakespeare's tragedy “King Lear”.

Modern lyrics not up to the mark: Annu Kapoor

Actor Annu Kapoor, who entertains listeners via radio show "Suhaana Safar", says the lyrics of modern day songs are "not upto the mark" and certain songs only contain "rhyming and nothing else".

"The lyrical value of the modern day songs is very limited and is not upto the mark. There are songs with only rhyming and nothing else," Annu told IANS.

Annu's show on 92.7 BIG FM has gained a lot of popularity in Delhi and Mumbai. It features interesting stories and facts from the film era gone by along with insights into the professional and personal lives of actors from the glorious past interspersed with retro songs from the time.

Talking about the change in the industry over the years, he said: "Change is taking place every moment, but it is not necessary that every change is a progress. Different ways of using music, different kinds of compositions have come up -- incidentally, the compositions don't leave a long lasting impact on the listener -- this change I have noticed."

The 59-year-old actor's political satire "Jai Ho! Democracy" hit the screens on Friday.

The film, which is written and directed by Annu's brother Ranjit Kapoor, is a dark comic satire on Indian politics and takes a dig at the existing social and political morass the country is staring at currently. It does not feature any musical track.

The film also features ace theatre artists like Om Puri, Satish Kaushik, Adil Hussain and Seema Biswas.

Hope 'Nach Baliye' clears my doubts about reality shows: Chetan Bhagat

0

Scripted and staged fights are thought to be synonymous with reality shows. Now, author Chetan Bhagat, who will be judging dance reality TV show “Nach Baliye 7”, is on a quest to find out the truth for himself.

He hopes his own doubts and perception about reality shows are cleared.

“I was skeptical of reality shows, and I informed Ekta (Ekta Kapoor, producer of the TV show) about it. She said 'Go and find out whether it is real or not'. So, I will make sure that all those doubts are cleared. I will also make sure it is real," Bhagat told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Bhagat, who will share the judges' panel with choreographer Marzi Pestonji and actress Preity Zinta, plans to dig out the truth by "quizzing couples and cross-examining them".

In the show, celebrity couples showcase their dance moves to win the trophy. But the bestselling novelist pointed that he is not a dance expert and will focus on the reality quotient.

"I'm not a dance expert, but the format of the show has changed a lot. There is more reality in it now. Audience will see couples outside the dance floor also. And I think a lot of people are interested in that as they are celebrities. I will be helping in that aspect," he said.

Bhagat quit a banking job to turn into a writer and found success. He has churned out bestsellers like "Five Point Someone", "The 3 Mistakes of My Life", and "2 States: The Story Of My Marriage" and most of his novels have been adapted into successful movies. Bhagat has also written the screenplay for Salman Khan-starrer “Kick”.

Now he is venturing onto the small screen for the first time. An IIT-Delhi and IIM-Ahmedabad alumnus, he says moving out of his comfort zone is difficult, but a positive response from people around him has injected confidence in him to continue.

“It is the first time that I will be seen like this on small screen. A lot of people are asking 'What is Chetan doing in this?'. There is a lot of curiosity about it. So, I am excited about it and nervous as well. It is something out of my comfort zone, but the feedback that I am getting is quite positive so I am happy,” he said.

The author plans to treat the show as a platform to reach the masses.

"I want to reach maximum number of Indians. The more Indians I reach the better are the chances of them listening to me and my views. It is a way for me to reach people."

With his stint on the Star Plus show, Bhagat also hopes to appreciate dance as an art form, rather than becoming a dancer himself!

A huge responsibility, burden to be star kid: Mahaakshay Chakraborty

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty's son Mahaakshay, who has so far failed to strike a chord in Hindi showbiz, says it's a huge responsibility and a burden to be the child of a star.

Mahaakshay, who had entered the industry with the name Mimoh, told IANS: "It's not easy for the star kids. I feel it's a huge responsibility and a burden being a star kid. I am used to carrying the burden because today no matter what I do, the comparisons will always be there with my father."

"I'm used to carrying this burden and this has become my biggest strength because I can endure that burden."

Mahaakshay debuted in 2008 with the film "Jimmy", which bombed at the box office. Since then, he has been struggling to make a mark in Bollywood. He is currently busy promoting his upcoming film "Ishqedariyan" and says the film is a romantic love story.

"My film is a romantic love story. In fact, it's a pure heart-touching and honest romantic love story. This is the first time when me and Evelyn Sharma are coming together on screen," he said.

Directed by V.K. Prakash, "Ishqedariyan" is releasing on May 15.

Better to open a shop than do TV soaps, says Sunil Grover

0

He has been tickling the audiences' funny bone with his act as Gutthi in "Comedy Nights With Kapil", but actor Sunil Grover says fiction dramas are not his cup of tea, and that he wouldn't opt for them even if he has no money to pay his EMIs some day.

Sunil told IANS: "I have not been doing much on small screen apart from 'Comedy Nights With Kapil'. Somehow, I don't like the idea of fiction (soaps) on TV. I have not done fiction apart from funny shows.

"I have not done fiction (soaps), and here in India, the kind of routine, the number of days you have to shoot... it's tedious. I am fortunate to be part of a comedy gang and I get to do things in a non-fictional way."

He says that if he does something more on TV, it has to be non-fiction.

"I cannot manage fiction with the story line and the schedules. Even if I am short of EMIs, I will not do fiction on TV. I might as well open a shop," he added.

Now Sunil is gearing up for the release of his Bollywood film "Gabbar Is Back", which is a serious film.

Asked if it was a conscious effort to do something apart from comedy, he said: "You don't do any conscious efforts at all ... whatever comes your way and excites you, you do it. It just happened. They narrated me the role and I liked it. I thought it would be fun playing a man on screen."

In fact, Sunil says he is yearning to do comedy on the big screen.

"No one is offering me comedy. They are offering me negative roles. Certain roles are a blend of comedy, but they are not primarily comedy roles. In today's time, everyone is doing everything. Hero is doing comedy, he is becoming a villain, he is doing everything. The scenario has changed," he said.

Directed by Krish and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom18 Motion Pictures, the film features Akshay Kumar and Shruti Haasan in key roles.

While many TV actors prefer to join films for fame and better pay, Sunil says that as of now, films are paying him lesser than TV.

"I don't think TV is a small medium... Eventually, film actors come back to TV later," he said.

Popular Pakistani musician Atif Aslam might not have been able to entertain his fans in Pune with his rock numbers and melodious tracks as his concert had to be cancelled, but he says he has no grudges and has only love to share with his Indian fans.

Aslam's concert was scheduled to be held in Pune on Saturday, but he couldn't play in the city due to opposition from a Hindu outfit.

"I respect all the promoters (of events) who invite us. But it is the responsibility of organisers. I love my fans and I like being in India. I'm a musician. I make music for everyone. I don't categorise (anyone) into Hindus or Muslims."

"When it comes to music, there are no boundaries. I'm here to share love. I'm not doing anything wrong. Whatever I earn, I make sure to pay taxes," Aslam told reporters here prior to his performance.

The 32-year-old, who entered Bollywood in 2005 with "Woh lamhe" from the film "Zeher", also shared that there is lot of love for Indian artists in his country.

"If you come to my country, you will see that there is lot of respect for Lataji (Mangeshkar). People still listen to Rafi-ji's songs and people try to copy Kishore Kumar. Even Bollywood dance steps are followed by Pakistanis," said Aslam.

The singer, who has performed in Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad, is performing in Indore for the first time.

"It feels good to be back here. People have appreciated (my work) and called me back here. This time around, I'll be performing different kind of music - EDM (electronic dance music). It's not my kind of music. I'm looking forward to it."

"I will perform with a DJ. My band won't be there. I'll miss that. It will be completely electronic music, but I might do some unplugged songs," the "Tere bin", "Doorie" and "Jalpari" hitmaker told IANS.

Have taken a big commercial leap with 'Gabbar Is Back': Krish

0
0

Filmmaker Krish is known for his humanistic Telugu films such as "Gamyam" and "Vedam". Now, with his forthcoming Hindi directorial debut "Gabbar Is Back", he says he has taken a commercial leap.

"Gabbar Is Back" is the Hindi remake of Tamil blockbuster "Ramana", which was written and directed by A.R. Murugadoss over a decade ago.

"You could say I've gone commercial all guns blazing in 'Gabbar...'. It was mainly done because of the story, which is about a man who takes corruption heads on. All my films so far have had commercial elements, but this time I've upped the ante," Krish told IANS in an interview.

The film, he says, will be the 'baap' (father) of all the previous remake versions put together. It has already been remade in Telugu, Kannada and Bengali.

The film's title has already created quite a buzz. Krish says it was chosen for a reason and not merely to cash in on the popularity of the original character.

"It was chosen to justify the actions of the lead character. Akshay plays a vigilante against corruption. In the movie, his actions maybe right, but the path he chooses isn't," said Krish and added: "You need good branding to sell any product. Here, Akshay raises his voice against corruption, and he achieves that through the brand name called Gabbar."

"In the movie, there's a scene where Akshay is writing an anonymous letter to the police and at the same time 'Sholay' is playing on the television. He overhears a dialogue and feels that in order to instill fear into corrupt men, Gabbar is the most suitable name," he said.

The film, which also stars Shruti Haasan and Telugu actor Suman Talwar, is jointly produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom18 Motion Pictures.

A few years ago, Krish was approached to remake his film "Gamyam" in Hindi. It was during this interim that he was offered the opportunity by Bhansali to remake "Ramana".

"The best part of the film is that its story, which is about corruption, is relevant even today. We've retained the soul of the original and have made minor changes to suit Bollywood audiences," he said.

"The remake will add a fresh perspective to the story, which was originally written a decade ago. So much has changed in the last decade and we had to incorporate the changes in the story. Murugadoss's story was a drama-cum-thriller and it had a very minor role for the heroine. Here, we've given Shruti Haasan ample scope to perform," he added.

Krish thanked his dialogue and screenplay writer Rajat Arora for making the film "even more exciting and commercial than the original".

On working with Akshay, the biggest star Krish has teamed up with in his career, he said: "There was absolutely no pressure while working with Akshay. It was mostly exciting. We shot for over 100 days, and he worked with the enthusiasm of a newcomer every single day. He has launched several directors in Bollywood, and I'm glad to be one of them."

Krish spent the last two and half years shuttling a lot between Mumbai and Hyderabad. His heart lies in both the industries.

"Although I'm currently working on a Telugu film called 'Kanche', I'd love to do more films in Bollywood," he said.

He added that the film with Mahesh Babu and Sonakshi Sinha he had announced a few years ago, is yet to materialise.

'Banno' singer Swati Sharma thanks Anand L. Rai

Swati Sharma, the voice behind "Banno tera swagger laage sexy" from "Tanu Weds Manu Returns", says the high pitch in the number was not easy to crack. But she's glad director Anand L. Rai gave her a break with the song, which is picturised on Kangana Ranaut.

Sharma is happy that people are enjoying the song.

"It wasn't a cakewalk to be able to pitch the exact note. The high tone of this sexy, peppy and foot-tapping number had to match the Haryanvi character played by none other than Kangana. I also want to thank director Aanand L. Rai for giving me a break with this song," she said.

The singer hails from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, and says she has bagged a few more projects which she can't disclose right now.

"I have bagged a few more songs, which I can disclose only after everything gets finalised. I credit myself for being able to complete my daily riyaz religiously. I have travelled all the way to Mumbai. Moreover, my parents have extended their support in every manner whatsoever," she added.

Actor Jimmy Shergill says if he can show his talent through supporting roles, he's happy and content.

"I am getting good supporting roles, and that's why I am doing it. These days who is doing solo hero films? Now we see two to three lead characters in all films... things have changed," Jimmy told IANS.

"If I can show my talent through supporting roles, then why not? I am being offered powerful roles. I don't see whether it's a lead or anything else. I am happy," said the actor, who has featured in films like "Mohabbatein", "Yahaan", "Lage Raho Munnabhai" and "A Wednesday".

Jimmy will now be seen in Anand L. Rai's "Tanu Weds Manu Returns", sharing screen space with R. Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut.
